aquapod : Sustainable Marine Expedition 2030

Reefs are an important habitat for a quarterof all forms of marine life on earth and human actions are putting them under great danger. Research portrays an exponential growth in marine tourism industry by year 2030. Unlessthis is carefully managed, tourism can pose a major threat to natural resources. The future of marine tourism is likely to be shaped by several factors like technology, environmental concerns, and changing consumer preferences. While this technology continues to advance, there may be an advancement in sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism practices, too. As a result,marine tourism operators may need to prioritize sustainable practices in order to attract and retain customers in the future. Overall, the future of marine tourism will likely be defined by a balance between technological innovation, environmental responsibility, and consumer demand. In this thesis project the author has speculatedof a future driven by government organizations and the private sectors working together to mark sustainable prospects for future goals. Sea beyond is one such stakeholder hypothetically pitched through this project which has been working towards ocean literacy for children in schools and kindergarten while aiming towards the Ocean decade challenge 2030. Another hypothetical stakeholder is Dyson, well known for vacuum cleaners and air purifiers. Engineering & design inspiration by Dyson with its advance technology helps derive a functional mobility. The project results into a holistic expedition and engagement with marine life. Systematic trails are maintained during journey without compromising any disturbance to aquatic life. Inclusivity for all- kids, adults and the elderly (even specially abled in a wheelchair) has been considered throughout the design process. The research & design approach has resulted ina mobile self-sustaining autonomous terminalthat takes passengers to different locations. A specially designed capsule- Aquapod, descends into the depth of ocean under curated parameters. The expedition takes one through a spiritual journey of excitement, awareness, educationand responsibilities. Channeling an experience from appreciation of the beautiful marine life to realizing how damages are caused by bleaching of corals. During the journey, passengers also spectate ocean cleanup project and coral farming to understand the conservation practices of today. It provides users with recreational activity along with meaningful awareness and reflect on their responsibilities. Aquapod is a product that helps in mobility, embarks on the importance through experience and gathers data for analysis. The collected data by Aquapod during each journey helps oceanographers and marine biologists for their study and research in respective fields.

How the urban transportation should be organisedhas been one of the fastest growing topics nowadays.With many rule breakers like autonomous driving orshared e-scooters coming in, people’s opinions on howour cities should welcome them, or adapt to them havebeen drastically divided.In my thesis project, I aim to create a new type ofshareable, open-air, slow-moving vehicle that co-liveswell with the pedestrians in slow cities, enabling a moredynamic and vibrant lifestyle.Throughout my research, I have discovered that manypeople and organisations are working towards the shiftto non-motorised modes of transportation in urbanareas, and all the possible new forms of commerce,social activities enabled by it.Therefore, I started my research with how tobuild pleasant public spaces instead of car-relatedinformation right away. In order to picture a futureslow city feasibly, I combined my own experience andunderstandings of how cities in different countries arebuilt with the visions of car companies like Toyota onfuture urban life.During the process of design, I also didn’t start withtraditional sketches from the beginning. Instead, Ifound it very helpful to collect the behaviours that thecitizens already have, and try to combine them with myproduct, which in the end creates a new lifestyle. Theinspirations were not only from cars but also furniture,architecture, public space, game, and product design.I explored combinations of soft and transparent materials to build trust between user and pedestrians.At the same time, ideas of usages when the vehicle isparked were also explored. It was important how thevehicle blends into the functions of a near future citylife in an ideal way.Aesthetically, I intended to celebrate the combinationof different materials in a simple but unique shape,looking for a balance between automotive dynamicform and producty friendly structure which fits wellwith MINI mentality.The final outcome has a human-like interface. It’salmost like a companion in the city that lives with us.We can not only move around with it, but also benefitfrom the functions offered while it’s parked.

Peugeot Liminal Space

Contemporary life and its fast-paced nature have created a shift in how we behave. Moments of calm are often disturbed by the human temptation to distract the mind. We try to push away the ambiguous moments of silence. However, these moments have proven to have significant mental benefits. They allow people to reflect and come down to their senses.Liminal spaces are spaces that can be described both as inside as well as outside. They are so powerful in their presence and aesthetic that they lead the occupant to question their surroundings and ultimately allow them to transition their mind. Mostly used in architecture and psychology, I wanted to explore what the limen could do in the transportation design field. During this project, I asked the question: How can Liminal spaces in the mobility sector develop a deeper connection with our environment and ourselves?The Peugeot Liminal Space is a service designed to provide a convenient getaway from society, in order to connect with nature and oneself. With the mindset that there is no destination needed, the mental journey is the end product.The design is a personal air balloon that serves as a transformative space for users to find solace, a quiet place that interacts with the user in a calm and non-intrusive manner.Throughout the journey, the user will pass several thresholds as they move further away/ get closer to society. By changing the vehicle’s attributes the user is stimulated to respond to the changes in their environment, requiring them to focus on the here and now. The balloon can be described as a mindfulness practice that adapts to the user’s needs while emphasizing movements from fauna and flora. Passing wind gusts, animals or moving trees can initiate a playful motion inside the vehicle.

Modular Vehicle Design Concept

Outlined herein is the Modular Vehicle [MODV] concept as a cost effective, utilitarian, and highly functional vehicle concept for the changing demands placed on a MAGTF [Marine Air-Ground Task Force] or SP-MAGTF [Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force] in the 21st century. A large focus is put on the importance of modularity and cost effectiveness of having a 24 hour configurable vehicle to a specific mission and area of operation. Off-road vehicle progression through history is presented and successful design features are noted in order to develop underlying goals for the modular vehicle. The thesis emphasizes recent technology advancements that can shift the foundations of vehicle design including wheel hub motors, high capacity batteries, solid oxide fuel cells, autonomy, structural health monitoring, energy harvesting shock absorbers, non-pneumatic tires, and drive-by-wire options. Predictions on the outlook for the technology progressions is discussed to give insight into the viability of basing a vehicle concept on these technologies. Finally, physical design bounds are presented to provide a foundation for the future design of such a vehicle. / Master of Science

Das E-Lastenrad als Alternative im städtischen Wirtschaftsverkehr. Determinanten der Nutzung eines „neuen alten“ Fahrzeugkonzepts

Elektrifizierte Lastenfahrräder werden als ein Lösungsansatz für die wachsenden Herausforderungen des städtischen Wirtschaftsverkehrs gesehen. Fokus dieser Arbeit ist eine Abschätzung des Einsatzpotenzials dieses Fahrzeugkonzepts unter Betrachtung von konzeptionellen, verkehrlichen und wirtschaftlichen Aspekten. Als kumulative Dissertation enthält sie fünf Fachartikel, gruppiert zu drei Forschungsbeiträgen. Im ersten Forschungsbeitrag wird erörtert, wie erfolgversprechend das E-Lastenrad, eine Neuauflage des alten Konzepts Lastenfahrrad, in einem Markt mit ersten Anwendern (Kurierdienstleistung) ist. Die Auftragsstruktur im Stadtkuriergeschäft bietet ein substanzielles Marktpotenzial für E-Lastenräder, allerdings erschwert die Positionierung zwischen zwei etablierten Modi (Pkw und Fahrrad) den Markteintritt. Der zweite Teil der Analyse weitet den Blick auf alle Branchen und bietet eine strukturierte Beschreibung der verschiedenartigen Einflussfaktoren (Treiber und Hemmnisse), die auf die Lastenradnutzung im städtischen Wirtschaftsverkehr wirken. Als relevante Entscheidungskriterien konnten identifiziert werden: fahrzeugseitige Aspekte, Strukturen und Prozesse des adoptierenden Unternehmens, Einstellungen der Entscheider*innen, weiche Faktoren sowie regulative und räumliche Rahmenbedingungen. Der dritte Beitrag thematisiert die operative Eignung des E-Lastenrads, indem seine Fahrtzeiten einem Pkw gegenübergestellt werden. Bei Strecken bis zu 3 km sind beide Modi nahezu gleich schnell. Die Hälfte aller Fahrten bis 20 km Distanz würde bei einem Wechsel vom Pkw zum Lastenrad höchstens 2–10 min länger dauern (ohne Berücksichtigung der Parksuchzeit). Bereits kleine Änderungen an den Verkehrsbedingungen könnten noch bestehende Vorteile des Pkw spürbar verringern. Insgesamt erweitert die Arbeit maßgeblich das Wissen zu einem „neuen alten“ Fahrzeugkonzept, dem ein Potenzial zur Auflösung von bislang auf das Automobil hin ausgerichteten Systemen beigemessen wird. / Shifting trips to electric cargo bikes is one possible solution to deal with the growing challenges of urban commercial transport. This thesis combines conceptual, transport-related, and economic aspects as a foundation to assess the feasibility of this vehicle concept for freight and service trips. It contains five scientific papers, which provide three research contributions. The first contribution identifies the potentials of electric cargo bikes among first users (i.e., courier logistics services). Electric cargo bikes are an updated and re-envisioned version of freight bicycles. The features of point-to-point courier logistics assignments offer a substantial market opportunity for electric cargo bikes. However, being positioned between two established modes (i.e., car and bicycle) handicaps the market entry of cargo bikes. For the second contribution, the scope was widened to include all business sectors. A structured description is presented of the various determinants (i.e., drivers and barriers) affecting commercial cargo bike use. Among these were vehicle-specific factors, structures and practices of the company, attitudes of decision-makers, soft factors, regulatory frameworks, and spatial conditions. The third contribution explores the travel time differences between electric cargo bikes and cars for commercial trips. For trip distances of up to 3 kilometers, the travel times of both modes largely overlap. Half of all trips up to 20 kilometers would take only a maximum of 2 to 10 minutes longer by electric cargo bike (excluding the additional time for finding a parking spot). Small modifications in traffic could have considerable effects in reducing the current travel time advantages of cars. Consequently, this dissertation contributes towards the state-of-research by expanding the scientific knowledge of a type of vehicle that has the potential to disrupt car-dependent transportation systems.
