Immersive Storytelling for Environmental Communication

He, Yin January 2019 (has links)
As one of the earliest attempts to apply immersive technology in environmental communication, this design research project tries to answer the following research question: how do we communicate the connections between food-related behaviors and environmental impacts through immersive storytelling? During the project, an immersive story called "Trik’s' Party" for dome shows and a journey map of an immersive visitor experience are created. These design outcomes and this paper are built on the knowledge of scientific findings, communication methods, content creations, and service design. To support the creation process, new sketching, storyboarding and prototyping methods were developed for dome content creations. The core message of this paper is that effective environmental communication is not just about informing the public about facts and data from scientific studies. It is also about giving individuals and communities the knowledge, tools and spaces to develop a vision of their own future. Immersive storytelling is one of the methods for creating these spaces. It has a large potential to raise public empathy with other people and their future-self when the long-term and abstract impacts of the environmental problems become more visible and comprehensible in an imaginary space.

Vizuální média v městském veřejném prostoru / Visual media in the urban space

Strejcová, Anna January 2012 (has links)
The diploma theses Visual Media in the Urban Space deals with the issue of commercial visual media in the public space and the way they are incorporated to the city centers. I am focusing on that kind of media that invade the public space with the biggest force, such as billboards, bigboards, citylights, video screens, wraps, etc. The goal of the research is to compare the placement and the quantity of the out-of-home advertisements in the center of Prague and Barcelona. The research is done from the historical, cultural and geographical point of view (I am not going to investigate the visual messages from the semiotic point of view). I have chosen these two cities because they are the economic and cultural centers of the region and they have a very long history. Since these two cities are placed in the European cultural space and there are global agencies operating on the market I suppose there will be some parallels in the placement and appearance of the visual messages. My hypothesis is that most of the advertisements will be placed in the new-built neighborhoods and the historical centers will be less "visually polluted". Another hypothesis is that the public space in Prague will be filled more with aggressive media forms than the public space in Barcelona. According to my hypothesis there is...

Irrational paratext : manipulated paratext in the gothic postmodern novels house of leaves, the adventuress, and the three incestuous sisters.

Howard, Nicole Marie January 2015 (has links)
Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves and Audrey Niffenegger's two visual novels The Three Incestuous Sisters and The Adventuress all contain examples of manipulated paratext - paratexts being the devices involved in the presentation of the text such as titles, author names, font, introductions, illustrations, appendices, advertising, and interviews. The emphasis these authors place on these usually inconspicuous devices is an expression of the irrational themes contained within these texts. The irrational is an underlying theme of the Gothic genre and through examining the use of manipulated paratexts this thesis demonstrates how these texts make use of the irrational Gothic elements that are present within the postmodern. While Danielewski and Niffenegger both have these similar themes, the effects they create are extremely different. Niffenegger creates écriture feminine, or feminine writing as described by Hélène Cixous, by prioritising illustrations that feature marginalised bodily expression in order to convey the narrative rather than text. Danielewski, on the other hand, produces a text that is a pure pastiche of Gothic and postmodern devices in order to emulate the postmodern media in its creation of hyperreality and to reproduce the sensation of a media that possesses and changes its consumers. House of Leaves is the instigator for a number of similar texts that have been published since the turn of the millennium which will be considered an emerging literary movement.

The Value of Visual Media in the Achievement of Instructors' Objectives as Perceived by Instructors in Predominantly Black State-Supported Colleges and Universities in the State of Louisiana

Pennywell, Phillip 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine the extent to which instructors perceived visual media as being valuable in achieving their classroom objectives in predominantly black, state-supported colleges and universities in the State of Louisiana. Questionnaires were mailed to 165 college and university instructors in colleges of education in predominantly black state-supported universities in Louisiana. Of the 165 questionnaires mailed, 139 were returned. All participants used in the study were teaching at least one course in education during the time the questionnaire was administered. The study is descriptive. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire, and analyzed by percentages, means, and standard deviations. One-way analysis of variance was used to test the differences in attitudes among the faculty members in the study. The level of significance was set at .05.

'Dresdner Stadtgeschichte 3D'

Chojna, Julia, Woltmann, Natalie, Münster, Sander, Friedrichs, Kristina, Schneider, Danilo, Wacker, Markus, Uhlemann, Rainer 19 February 2019 (has links)
The increasing awareness of the opportunities and possibilities of digitization in research and industry brings increased demands on graduates. The fact that digital resources are now cumulatively playing a role in the humanities and social sciences also necessitates the networking of various specialist disciplines. Cross-disciplinary project work, however, has its own challenges due to different subject cultures, perspectives and working methods. In order to adequately prepare students for these hurdles, the TU Dresden and the HTW Dresden (University of Applied Sciences) carried out a joint teaching project called “Dresdner Stadtgeschichte 3D”. Potentials and challenges were collected and analysed in a mixed method procedure in order to subsequently formulate didactic-conceptual implications.

The selection and evaluation of audio-visual media for supporting learners with behavioural problems (LBP)

Calder, Bruce Donovan 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this research was to make recommendations how parents and educators can select and use audio-visual media for supporting learners with behavioural problems (LBP). A literature study was conducted on behavioural problems and on the use of audio-visual media to address these. Thereafter an empirical investigation was done by means of a case study design. A purposive sample was chosen from Grades 10 and 12 learners in Pietermaritzburg. Websites were also selected for addressing a variety of topics. The most important findings were that audio-visual media can be selected by means of five criteria related to content accuracy and appropriateness, diversity and quality. The findings indicate that visual media can stimulate cognitive skills (including problem solving and critical thinking) and reflection about the acceptance of responsibility, positive attitudes and respect for authority, among others. It is concluded that audio-visual media can be used by educators to support LBP. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. (Specialisation in Psychology of Education)

Tecnologia e media óticos em Franz Kafka

Santos, Thiago Benites dos January 2010 (has links)
Deviating from traditional interpretations of the works of Franz Kafka that deal with them in terms of the labyrinth, chaos, absurdity and bureaucracy, the purpose of this work is to consider the introduction of technology and visual media on both his fictional and biographical texts. In relation to technology, this work will consider Kafka’s working life, which is usually only seen in the context of his bureaucratic functions with the insurance company. This bias often causes one to overlook the fact that Kafka was an expert in machines and that one of his main functions was to monitor the risk levels in several factories. The present analysis assumes that this part of his life also permeated the substance of his works. This work also considers new perspective forms resulting from the urban experience that manifest themselves in a markedly visual way in his texts. The descriptions of both his experience with cars and trams and that with cinema and Kaiserpanorama generate strong visual images. Records of Kafka’s encounters with cinematographers, in his diaries and letters, support the view that the visual media must be considered as a possible influence on Kafka’s work. This work shows how these media did not simply appear incidentally, but influenced his writing in many ways. Such influences are manifested in the themes of silent movies and in the application of cinematographic techniques borrowed from literary narrative. This work also considers the influence of Kaiserpanorama, a very popular early twentieth century optical medium. In his writings Kafka expresses great enthusiasm for this binocular device which permits a viewer to watch a series of still stereoscopic photographs providing a three-dimensional optical effect. In summary, the intention of this work is to analyze the convergence and combination of dynamic cinematographic influences and static photographic influences on some particular qualities of Kafka’s writings.

Människor i väglöst land : En studie om hur journalisten Eric Forsgren gestaltade Norrbottens befolkning i visuell media under 1950 och 1960-talen / People in a roadless country : A study about how the journalist Eric Forsgren portrayed the people in Norrbotten in visual media during 1950- 1960's

Larsson, Linnéa, Selström Lundin, Anna-Karin January 2019 (has links)
In this study Eric Forsgrens framing of the people living in Norrbotten in visual media during the period of 1950- to 1960 is analyzed. This study is based on a qualitative content analysis. This is connected through theories about framing and representation. The results from this study shows that Forsgren framed the people living in Norrbotten as a community with bad communication, with a lot of nature friendly working habits. Such as the care of reindeers and the hunt for seals. It is also clear that many of the prejudice about the people in Norrbotten is amplified by the adaption. The prejudice of the people are the struggle of a bilingual people in a unilingual society. But also the marginalization of a minority such as the sami people and the people tornedalingar who lives in the north of Norrbotten. The sami people are framed as something exotich in their way of living. And the problem of the exodus of the people in Norrbotten is captured.
