The present study aimed to compare the direct and indirect measurements of peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) in field testing continuous and incremental Octagon Multi-Stage Test (OMFT) and to correlate the values obtained in the test continuous incremental in cycle-arm ergometer (EA). Eight athletes of the Wheelchair Rugby participated in this study. These athletes initially underwent anthropometric measurements for calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI) and percent body fat (%BF). After were submitted to field test (OMFT) with the use of portable gas analyzer K4b2 Cosmed for measurement direct of the VO2peak. After 72 hours the same athletes performed the test continuous incremental in EA to obtain the values of VO2peak. Pre and post-test values have been measured heart rate (HR), lactate concentration ([Lac]), oxygen consumption (VO2) and perceived exertion (PE). Moreover, the field test (OMFT) data were collected from total distance traveled, stage, and number of turns. Variables to measurement indirect of VO2 peak. For the VO2peak values, it was observed that the values of the EA group mean was 17.8 ± 6ml/kg/min, whereas for the test OMFT were 21.9 ± 5.2 ml/kg/min by direct measurement and 24.8 ± 3.3 ml/kg/min for measurement prediction equation by pre-established, HRmax was 129.1 ± 24bpm in EA and 127.8 ± 26bpm in OMFT. Already the PSE was 8.2±1.03 in EA and 6.5±2.2 in OMFT. By calculating the correlation between the measurements of VO2peak, there was a high correlation (r = 0.86) between the measurement of direct and indirect OMFT with a significance level of p <0.05 and by Bland-Altman concordance was observed between methods with varying LIC95% from -2.8 to 8.5. The OMFT shows validity for measuring Aerobic Power in athletes with tetraplegia; however, there is a need for adjustments in the protocol so that the results are actually closer to the reality of athletes with tetraplegia, enabling greater control of the results and prescription of exercise intensity, thus avoiding injury due to overload training / Mestrado / Atividade Fisica Adaptada / Mestre em Educação Física

Physiological demands and court-movement patterns of wheelchair tennisSindall, Paul Adam January 2016 (has links)
The wheelchair tennis evidence base has developed considerably in recent years. For those with a spinal cord injury (SCI), or severe physical impairment, tennis participation represents an opportunity for skill and motor development, and potential for disease risk reduction (Abel et al., 2008). However, as a complex series of technical, tactical and physical elements are implicated, participation for novice, developmental or low-skill players can be challenging. Hence, extension of the evidence base to consider the responses of such groups during play is of considerable value. Initial experimental studies in this thesis investigated the validity, reliability and applicability of instrumentation for the assessment of wheelchair tennis court-movement. Comparisons were made between a global positioning system (GPS) and the data logger (DL) device (Study 1). GPS underestimated criterion distance in tennis-specific drills and reported lower match-play values than the DL. In contrast, DL placed on the outside wheel offered an accurate representation of distance. However, underestimations for DL were revealed at speeds > 2.50 m·s-1 during treadmill testing. Consequently, Study 2 extended this work with consideration of DL applicability for wheelchair tennis match-play. Examination of speed profiles revealed that time spent below the threshold for accuracy was trivial, confirming DL applicability for court-movement assessment. Further between-group comparisons for rank [highly-ranked (HIGH), low-ranked (LOW)], sex (male, female) and format (singles, doubles) revealed that LOW were stationary for longer than HIGH and spent more time at low propulsion speeds. Time in higher speed zones was greatest for HIGH and doubles players. Between-group differences (rank) were further scrutinised in Study 3 with attention paid to describing the physiological response of competitive match-play aligned to court-movement. Set outcome (result) was also examined. Independent of result, HIGH covered greater overall, forwards, reverse and forwards-to-reverse distances than LOW. Interestingly, HIGH winners covered greater distances than HIGH losers and had a higher mean average and minimum heart rate (HR) than LOW winners. In contrast, LOW losers had a higher mean average and mean minimum HR than LOW winners. Collectively, these outcomes suggest an enhanced ability for HIGH to respond to ball movement and the physiological and skill challenges of match-play. While this thesis confirmed that the activity duration and playing intensity is sufficient to confer health-related effects (Study 3), differences identified for rank suggested that strategies to 4 enable performance improvements in LOW were merited. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has suggested that all starter players should be able to serve, rally and score from their first lesson (ITF, 2007). The reality however, is that chair propulsion whilst holding a racket is complex, and therefore, tennis play is challenging for novice and developmental players. Hence, the remainder of experimental work focused on interventions to enable increased court-movement and development of wheelchair tennis-specific court-mobility for LOW. The ITF have endorsed the use of a low-compression ball (LCB) for novices. An LCB bounces lower and moves more slowly through the air than a standard-compression ball (SCB). Novel findings from Study 4 revealed that greater total and forwards distances, greater average speeds and less time stationary result from use of the LCB. Increased movement activity occurred without associated increases in physiological cost, but was considered advantageous, with players adopting stronger positions for shot-play. Further examination of the linkage between movement and physiological variables were explored in the final experimental investigation (Study 5). A short period of organised practice enabled higher overall and forwards distances, and peak and average speeds to be achieved during match-play, without associated increases in physiological cost. Changes were desirable and represented enhanced court-mobility and mechanical efficiency (ME). Wheelchair tennis players were also more self-confident in tennis-specific chair-mobility, post-practice. The racket was a constraint, with lower distances and speeds, and a lower peak physiological response, achieved during tennis practice completed with a racket. This thesis advocates the use of an LCB and a short period of pre-match court-mobility practice for the novice wheelchair tennis player. Collectively, these interventions are likely to prompt greater court-movement enabling better court-positioning, develop confidence in court-mobility and shot-play, develop competence in racket handling whilst pushing, and enhancing ME. These characteristics are likely to enable participation with the likely inference being that greater competence, skill and self-confidence promotes greater enjoyment and therefore enhances longer-term compliance. This is of considerable practical significance given that tennis typically attracts new players to the game, but is less successful at retaining them (ITF, 2007).

The feelings of people with physical disabilities regarding discrimination in TembisaLeshilo, W M 09 November 2004 (has links)
The aim of the study was to explore and describe the feelings of people with physical disabilities regarding discrimination in the community of Tembisa. Discrimination against people with physical disabilities is one of the major problems affecting the larger society, impacting on their lives. The exploratory and descriptive designs were used because of insufficient information available on this topic particularly in Tembisa and to describe the feelings of people with disabilities regarding discrimination. A semi-structured interview schedule was used as a data-gathering instrument. The study was conducted among people with physical disabilities who are clients of the organisation Association for Physically Disabled (APD). Ten respondents were then selected following a purposive non-probability sampling method. The study revealed that most people with physical disabilities experience difficulty in accessing some of the public buildings in Tembisa as they are not wheelchair friendly. Housing for people with disabilities was also raised as another problem experienced by people with disabilities in general. The findings further proved that not much has been done regarding inclusion of people with disabilities by employing them in the open labour market. In conclusion, it has been proved that people with disabilities feel isolated, rejected, marginalised and stigmatised in the community of Tembisa by their able-bodied counterparts. Recommendations are provided regarding how people with disabilities can be included in Tembisa and mainstream society. / Dissertation (MA(Social Work)(Health Care))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Social Work / unrestricted

Analyse et interprétation des variations intentionnelles ou perturbatrices de la station debout sur gyropode / Analysis and interpretation of the deliberate or disruptive variations of the upright postureTrénoras, Lambert 01 December 2014 (has links)
The work of this thesis concerns the study and design of a two-wheel mobilitychair, conscript the Gyrolift, adapted from a Personal Transporter. It provides anauto-well-balanced transport vehicle and a verticalisation mechanism. The verticalisationallows a user in a wheelchair the transfer from a seat position to a standingposition.Being in a standing position and remaining stable when disturbances are presentmay be a challenge for a person with a mobility impairment. The posture variationsof the upper limbs such as the trunk can be due to external disturbances. This studydiscusses the detection of disruptive movements and to interpret the disturbances. Asafety ystem reacts according to the intensity of the disturbance when detected. Wealso study the impacts of factors such as the environment and the apprehension onthe Gyrolift and user.In the first chapter of the thesis, the contribution concerns the study of the trajectoryof verticalisation and the disturbances which it can generate. A first prototypewas designed to validate our study. The second chapter of the thesis concerns the detection of disturbance on bipedshumanoids robots. We obtained criteria allowing us a fast and reliable detection ofa disturbance, its direction and its intensity to make the movements adapted tocompensate for this disturbance. Finally, we studied the adaptation of these criteria on the Gyrolift as well as thepossible reactions to secure the system. We developed and realised for it a secondprototype of the Gyrolift wheelchair. We validated this study with the help of a humanoid robot and a new type ofverticalisation wheelchair developed within the framework of this project.

The welfare state in Sweden is govern by the politicians who sets regulations of the processing aids, though the municipalities is autonomous which state in the individual’s rights can be affected as the municipalities follow their own regula-tions. The professionals shall guide the individual to right accessibility aid through a needs assessment and strive after the individual’s independence. The goal is to enable the individual experiencing participation, independent life and the opportunity for an active life which is a part of the criteria for human rights. The individual should be heard in order to have the opportunity to participate in society as everyone else. A contributing factor to participation can be right adapted accessibility aid in form of a wheelchair that fulfills the individual’s need. The individual should have more options in the procured accessibility aid assortment which should be offered and not restricted by inter alia the municipal-ity. As society is constantly changing, the accessibility aid production should follow the development of society and produce products with Universal design i.e. products that enables more applications. The study was based on a semi-structured interview with six participants.
