Uppsatsen syftar till att synliggöra folkbiblioteksutvecklingen i Luleå, samt att lyfta fram fler kvinnor som bidragit till folkbiblioteksutvecklingen i Sverige. Studien undersöker vilka faktorer som påverkat progressionen av Luleå kommuns folkbibliotek, samtidigt som dessa sätts i relation till Sveriges biblioteksutveckling. Trots att Valfrid Palmgren beundrade och framhävde Luleås folkbibliotek i sin skrift år 1911, är Norrbottens bibliotekshistoria tämligen dold för omvärlden. Luleås bibliotek var bland de första biblioteken i Sverige som utsågs till centralbibliotek, där bibliotekarien Olga Bardh anställdes som chef. Olga Bardh var en välutbildad kvinna med stora visioner om att skapa ett modernt och framstående bibliotek i Luleå och Norrbotten. Denna studie ämnar undersöka vilken betydelse hennes arbete hade för biblioteksutvecklingen, och på vilket sätt detta i så fall yttrade sig. Uppsatsens teoretiska utgångspunkter utgår från Christina Florins (1987) teorier om den svenska folkskolans feminiserings- och professionaliseringsprocess i början på 1900-talet, Yvonne Hirdmans (2004) teorier om genussystemet, samt Hanna Westberg-Wohlgemuths (1996) teorier om könsmärkning. Med hjälp av kritisk diskursanalys har det empiriska materialet analyserats i hopp om att verka för social förändring, där undertryckta samhällsgrupper synliggörs.

[pt] A presente dissertação buscou refletir e problematizar as representações
sobre as mulheres presentes em livros didáticos de história direcionados à última
série do Ensino Fundamental II (atual nono ano) publicados entre 2001 e 2007. Foi
analisado ainda o lugar que ocupa a questão de gênero no discurso dos currículos -
Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (1998) e Manuais e Guias do Programa
Nacional do Livro Didático. Nas questões contidas na dissertação, está presente a
inquietação em relação à forma como a atuação das mulheres como agentes
históricos foi construída ao longo dos anos nos materiais didáticos, em perspectiva
com a ação masculina, criando discursos que diminuem a voz feminina. Como
cabedal teórico metodológico utilizou-se a epistemologia feminista e o conceito de
gênero. O foco principal das análises esteve sobre o texto dos livros didáticos, mais
especificamente, os conteúdos relacionados ao século XX, nos quais foram
observados os usos e as intenções dos textos e os significados que estes permitem
construir, analisando se estes contribuem ou não para a manutenção de uma
cultura sexista. As metodologias da Análise do Discurso, tal como proposta por
Foucault, foram a base para a construção das análises deste trabalho. / [en] The present dissertation intends to reflect on and problematize the
representations about women present in textbooks of History directed to the last
grade of Elementary School - 9th grade of High School - published between 2001
and 2007. It was also analyzed the place of the gender issue in curriculum discourse
– Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais (1998) and handbooks and guides of Programa
Nacional do Livro Didático. In the questions of this writing, is contained the
disquiet about the way in which the performance of women as historical agents was
built over the years in didactic materials, in perspective with the male action,
creating discourses that fade the female voice. Feminist epistemology and the
concept of gender were used as a theoretical methodological tool. The main focus
of the analyzes was on the text of the textbooks, more specifically the contents
related to the twentieth century, in which the uses and intentions of the texts, and
their meanings, were observed, analyzing whether or not they contribute to the
maintenance of a sexist culture. Discourse Analysis methodologies, as proposed by
Foucault, were the basis for the construction of the analyzes of this work.

This thesis is a quantitative analysis of women working for pay aged sixteen and older in five mid-size Texas cities from 1900 to 1940. It examines wage-earning women primarily in terms of race, age, marital status, and occupation at each census year and how those key factors changed over time. This study investigates what, if any, trends occurred in the types of occupations open to women and the roles of race, age, and marital status in women working for pay in the first forty years of the 20th century.

"For Country and For Home": Elite Richmond Women and Changing Southern Womanhood during the First World WarGreenwood, Anne Leslie 21 May 2008 (has links)
Using Richmond as a case study, this thesis seeks to answer the following question: what was the effect of the First World War on elite white Richmond women's roles as southern women? This thesis argues that, while white southern women's roles had been changing since the Civil War, it was not until World War I that southern women's traditional roles were challenged by ideas of national patriotism and citizenship. This thesis traces the trajectory of change from the last decades of the nineteenth century, when Richmond women began to join women's organizations and participate more fully in public life, through World War I. This thesis argues that during the war, national organizations that formed chapters in Richmond challenged the predominant ideas about women's public responsibilities, which had focused on their city, state, and region. This war relief work with the Red Cross and governmental programs like Liberty Loan drives encouraged women to work beyond traditional domestic roles and challenged conceptions of southern womanhood. This thesis contends that, while some women adapted more fully to these changes, all Richmond women integrated new ideas about national womanhood into their identities, creating a new southern woman who was both southern and American. / Master of Arts

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study investigates the social and religious roles of women in Ancient Israel.
The thesis comprises of four parts.
Chapter 1 focuses on the role of women in an anthropological perspective. We
take a look at how women were perceived within the pre-industrial communities.
Israel did not live in a vacuum but was part and parcel of the ancient Near Eastern
cultural world. Chapter 2 therefore focuses on the role of women in Egyptian and
Assyrio-Babylonian cultures. Her social, economic, political and religious roles are
under investigation.
In Chapter 3 the focus shifts to the role of women within the social organisation. A
short overview with a few examples demonstrates where the role of women
expands beyond that of social organisation. This role, which could be described as
a "political function", was only allocated to a few privileged women.
Chapter 4 deals with the religious role of the Israelite women. This chapter forms
the other focus point of the study. The religious activities of women within the
official, popular and familiy religious spheres are examined.
Chapter 5 presents a brief summary of the main conclusions of the study. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie word ondersoek ingestel na die sosiale en religieuse rol van die vrou in
Oud-Israel. Die tesis bestaan uit vier dele:
In Hoofstuk I word aandag gegee aan die rol van die vrou in antropologiese perspektief.
Hier word nagegaan hoe die vrou gesien is in pre-industriële gemeenskappe.
Omdat Israel nie in 'n vakuum geleef het nie, maar 'n integrale deel van die ou Nabye
Oosterse kultuurwêreld was, word daar in Hoofstuk 2 op 'n oorsigtelike wyse op die plek
van die vrou in die kulture van Egipte en Assirië- Babilonië gekonsentreer.
In Hoofstuk 3 verskuif die fokus na Israel en word nagegaan watter rol die vrou in die
sosiale organisasie gehad het. Daar word ook kortliks gekyk na voorbeelde waar die rol
van die vrou wyer gestrek het as die engere familie kring. Hierdie rol, wat getipeer sou
kon word as 'n tipe "politieke funksie", was egter net vir 'n paar vroue beskore.
Hoofstuk 4 handel oor die religieuse rol van die vrou in Israel. Hierdie hoofstuk vorm die
ander fokuspunt van die studie. Daar word gekyk na die aandeel van die vrou in die
offisiële religie, die populêre religie en die familie-religie.
In Hoofstuk 5 word die belangrikste bevindinge van die ondersoek kortliks saamgevat.

Prostitution and subjectivity in late mediaeval Germany and SwitzerlandPage, Jamie January 2013 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the problem of subjectivity and prostitution in the Middle Ages. Three legal case studies of unpublished archival material and one chapter focussing on fictional texts from late mediaeval Germany and Switzerland are used to investigate the conditions of prostitutes' subjectification in law and literature. The thesis takes impetus from Ruth Karras's recent articulation of the problem of prostitution and sexuality, seeking to engage critically with her notion of “prostitute” as a medieval sexual identity that might be applied to any woman who had extra-marital sex. In dealing with trial records, it also aims to make a methodological contribution to the study of crime and the problem of locating the individual. Chapters I-III examine the records of criminal cases featuring the testimony of prostitutes, or women who risked such categorisation, to consider the available subject positions both within and outwith the context of municipal regulation. Whilst acknowledging the force of normative ideas about prostitutes as lustful women, these chapters argue that prostitutes' subject positions in legal cases were adopted according to local conditions, and depended upon the immediate circumstances of the women involved. They also consider trial records as a form of masculine discourse, arguing that an anxious masculine subject can be seen to emerge in response to the phenomenon of prostitution. Chapter IV expands this discussion by drawing on literary texts showing how prostitutes prompted concern on the part of male poets and audiences, for whom their sexual agency was a threat which belied their theoretical status as sexual objects. Note: Transcriptions of the legal cases making up chapters I-III are provided in Appendices A, B, and C.

The endeavor of this thesis is to throw light on the portrayal of women by the
Austrian-Jewish writer Joseph Roth. Roth’s women are regarded as highly negative and
thus the author has increasingly been judged a male chauvinist and misogynist. This
opinion seems particularly questionable since hardly any studies on his fictitious
women have ever been conducted. The present study aims at filling that void and
thereby presenting Roth’s views in a more differentiated manner. A new approach to
Roth is thus called for. The analysis draws from the socio-historic background in which
Roth’s work is situated. In his journalism as in his fiction, Roth strived to demonstrate
and deal with the challenges of the times he lived in. His work frequently revolves
around the “damaged” post-war generation in the 1920s and 30s, the feeling of being
literally and metaphorically homeless. His later works are mostly set in the past,
although this should not be viewed as escapism but as an attempt to come to terms
with present reality. The worlds he portrays are dominated by men who are neither
whole nor strong. But although women are few and it is said they are depicted only in
crude stereotypes, the study shows that Roth does address their problems and plights.
By observing women within established types, modern and traditional, it is revealed
that Roth indeed shows depth when characterizing women, and that his interest in
them is to use them as examples to illustrate fundamental aspects of the human
condition. Rather than portraying them subservient to man, Roth demonstrates their
common humanity. His understanding for the condition of women in his times often
becomes apparent only when the narrative perspective is isolated from the
protagonists. Simultaneously his work presents a valuable literary contribution for

Each of these novelists, in her own way, presents a critique of the idealised
woman of the nineteenth-century. My aim in this dissertation is to reveal the
degree to which each is successful in her mission to 'explode the lie' of angelic
womanhood, and, in so doing, free her long-incarcerated Victorian sisters.
It took great courage and fortitude to utter at times a lone dissenting voice; and
female writers of the present owe a great debt of gratitude to their pioneering
Victorian counterparts, who cleared the way for them to take up the banner and
