Nylund, Johanna January 2016 (has links)
Introduction The purpose of this study was to investigate to which extent people exercise MediYoga after completed course, if any symptoms change had occurred, and investigate the level of self-rated stress.  Method A quantitative method was used and the data was collected through an online survey. The sample included people who had completed a course in MediYoga within primary healthcare some time during 2015. The survey contained a validate questionnaire (SEQ-LT) to investigate self-rated stress during leisure time the past week, as well as a number of questions specific for this study. The survey was distributed to 123 people and 56 responded. Result The majority of people participating (n=30, 65 %) had not exercised MediYoga for the past week, most (n=31, 67 %) indicated that their symptoms had improved, and most (n=29, 63 %) rated stress as medium. Statistically, the results revealed that there was no significant difference in perceived symptoms change among those who had/had not exercised MediYoga for the past week (p=0,24). Furthermore, there was no statistic significant difference in levels of self-rated stress among those who had/had not exercised MediYoga for the past week (p=0,66). Conclusion The complexity of this study topic means that the result can be explained in several ways and can be due to different factors.

Att förebygga stressrelaterad psykisk ohälsa med yoga : En systematisk litteraturstudie om yoga och stresshormonet kortisol / To prevent stress-related mental illness with yoga : A systematic literature study on yoga and the stress hormone cortisol

Nielsen, Annica January 2019 (has links)
Artiklarna söktes upp i PubMed samt Web of Science. / Background: Stress and stress-related mental illness is increasing in our society and it is important to find options to slow down the development. Stress is a normal physical condition but for a long time without recovery stress can lead to mental illness. Yoga studies have shown a stress-reducing effect on mood and yoga has become a popular option to reduce perceived stress symptoms. Therefore it can be interesting to study underlying mechanisms for perceived stress reduction. The hormone cortisol increases during stress. Perhaps yoga has a stress-reducing effect through decreasing the hormone. Aims: The aim of the study is to exam whether perceived stress reduction in yoga practice is related to lowered cortisol levels in healthy adults. Methods: A systematic literature study was carried out on articles published in 2009-2018. The articles were searched in PubMed and Web of Science. Results: Nine studies were reviewed (seven experimental and two observations studies). Six studies showed complete or partial reduction of cortisol levels. An experimental and two observation studies did not show significantly lower cortisol levels. Partially improved mood and cognitive ability were seen. Conclusions: Decreased cortisol levels in yoga practice were observed. However, there were studies that did not show decreased cortisol levels and the studies have shortcomings that lower the strength of evidence. Better studies are needed to establish a relationship.

Perceptions of Stress: Employee Participation in a Yoga Class

Lee, Rosemarie 01 January 2018 (has links)
Abstract Employees experience workplace stress that can affect their health resulting in chronic diseases such as diabetes, stress, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Stress also contributes to staff presentism, absenteeism, and high turnover rate. The employee wellness program (EWP) yoga class at a metropolitan teaching hospital has not been evaluated for its effectiveness in employee stress reduction and improvement in employee health. The practice focus question for this project explored employees' perception of the impact of a metropolitan teaching hospital's EWP yoga class on their stress reduction and health promotion activities. The theoretical framework for this project is Lazarus' transactional model of stress and coping. This model suggests that individuals assess the stressor and find strategies for coping with the stress as it relates to them and their environment. The evidence that guided this project included a comprehensive literature review and the analysis of data retrieved from semi structured interviews with 20 participants in the yoga class who responded to an open invitation. Audiotaped interviews with the participants were analyzed and coded for common themes and revealed that participating in the EWP yoga program helped to reduce their perceived stress and improve their mental and physical well-being. The findings of this project were used to inform organizational leadership and may provide opportunities to evaluate the current yoga program regarding employee stress reduction, improving healthy activities, expansion of the program to other work sites within the organization, maintaining a healthy workforce, and reducing health care costs.

This is a qualitative research project, conducted using theory and methodology proposed by Social Representation with respect to the yoga practice of adolescent inmates and employees of the CASA Foundation. The objectives of the study are based on the following themes: characterization of the subjects; contextualization of the yoga activity within the organization of CASA Foundation; analysis of the yoga practice as a self-help tool and its potential impacts on the lives of young residents in the CASA Foundation through social representation of the adolescent practitioners and staff of the institution and, finally, an analysis of the difficulties and challenges involved in building a sense of inner peace and well-being. Held at the “Unidade de Internação Divisão Regional 5 – Unidade de Internação Paulista”, in Vila Maria, São Paulo, the survey was carried out with the participation of four teenagers and five employees of the institution. Interviews with three guiding questions and the observation of participants were used as data collection instruments. The data collected and organized using the Central Nucleus Theory unveiled a design that has as its core the practice of yoga in the CASA Foundation with peripheral nuclei of "repercussions of the practice of yoga", "concepts" and "difficulties" for the group composed of internal adolescents, and "perception of the impact of activity," "doubts" and "concepts" for the group of employees. Factors relating to well-being, attachment, self-assessment, resistance, environment and everyday life were important in compliance with the socio-educative measures and body posture and lack of knowledge were some of the peripheral elements emerging from the narratives of the participants. Considered through Winnicott´s and Foucault´s theories the material allowed us to observe differences in the understanding of objectives, concepts and experiences in the proposal of the practice of yoga between the different groups, at the same time as these difficulties arise. The study gave voice to both participant groups, allowing them to submit their social representations of the yoga practiced in the premises of a corrective institution such as this. / TEDE

Jorge, Marcia Pereira 03 May 2013 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-17T15:37:18Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 MarciaPJ_DISSERT.pdf: 1732539 bytes, checksum: db5b97ec548a4377401f9f1516161ca4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-05-03 / Yoga has been studied and practiced for over three thousand years and nowadays it is widely adopted as a mean to assist the health of individuals. Additionally, numerous benefits to the health rehabilitation and quality of life of elderly individuals has been attributed to this set of techniques. In women, the aging process is characterized by the interruption on ovarian follicular activity (menopause) characterized by a number of neuroendocrine and physiologic changes. Those changes are frequently accompanied by uncomfortable and occasionally debilitating symptoms. Although there is profuse clinical information about menopause, studies on the potential therapeutic application of yoga during the climacteric period are scarce. The objective of this research was to investigate the psychophysiological effects of 12 weeks of yoga practice in 88 postmenopausal women. The volunteers were divided into a control group (no intervention), exercise group and yoga group. Instruments were applied for the evaluation of climacteric syndrome, stress, depression, quality of life, and anxiety. In addition, the determination of hormonal levels of FSH, LH, estradiol, cortisol and progesterone, and biochemical levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, urea, creatinine, AST and ALT were conducted. Our results showed that the yoga group had significantly lower scores after the regular practice of yoga for menopausal symptoms. Besides, those changes were accompanied by a statistical significant improvement in the stress levels, decrease in depression scores, and higher scores in quality of life when compared with the control group and the exercise group. As well, the regular practice of yoga promoted the maintenance of cortisol levels compared to control group after 12 weeks. Regarding the biochemical parameters yoga practitioners presented lower levels of LDL in the blood. These results are supported by previous studies which found that regular practice of yoga improves quality of life of subjects, Thus, herein we propose that yoga can be a non-pharmacological alternative to management of menopausal symptoms and stress in postmenopausal women / O yoga tem sido estudado e praticado h? mais de tr?s mil anos e na atualidade tem sido adotado por milh?es de pessoas em todo o mundo como instrumento para a manuten??o da sa?de do indiv?duo.

Positiva hälsoaspekter i samband med barnyoga i skolan : En litteraturöversikt / Positive health aspects in connection with yoga for schoolchildren : A Literature Review Study

Håkansson, Johanna, Larsson, Johanna January 2017 (has links)
Introduction: Mental health and inactivity has increased amongst children and youngsters who are physically active are too few.  A physically active lifestyle is connected with reduced risk of contracting non-communicable diseases. Yoga is available as an intervention on different arenas around the world and has proven positive effects. The aim of this literature review study is to understand positive effects with yoga for children within the school environment. Method: A literature review study has been made including qualitative and quantitative research. Searches have been made in the databases available at the University of Skövde. The study question has been directed to existing research with focus on yoga and children. Articles have been selected from exclusion and inclusion criteria. Results: Most of the studies indicate that children enjoy yoga and felt less angry and less depressed afterwards.Yoga also indicates physical health effects including improved motor-skills, balance and lower cortisol levels. Teachers report that children improve their coping strategies and become calmer and more harmonious in the classroom. Discussion: The research indicates positive results but there are instances where children have reported feeling emotionally unwell when doing Yoga. More in-depth and longer studies are needed to ascertain whether the results are lasting.

Hur vanliga riskfaktorer för livsstilssjukdomar påverkas av interventioner med fysisk yoga : En litteraturöversikt / How common risk factors for noncommunicable diseases are affected by interventions with yoga asana practice : A literature review

Fasano, Jessica, Filipsson, Tina January 2017 (has links)
Introduction: Noncommunicable diseases are one of the main causes of death in the world today. They are affected by a lifestyle with lack of physical activity and increased energy intake which leads to overweight and high blood pressure. Objective: The objective of this literature review was to describe how common risk factors for lifestyle diseases are effected by physical yoga, yoga asana, interventions. Methods: A literature review with 12 reviewed articles, where the studies included an intervention withyoga asana, to study the effects on risk factors for lifestyle diseases on adults. Results: A majority of the selected articles showed that yoga can be effective in reducing risk factors, lowering blood pressure and weight, but some studies showed no effect of the intervention. All studies included other factors that might have affected the outcome, such as dietary advice. Discussion: Clear conclusions of the effect of yoga asana practice cannot be based on these articles. Continued research should focus on conducting studies in which the yoga group is compared with an active control group. That would enable an analysis of the effects of yoga asana in relation to interventions with healthy diet or regular exercise.
