Grounds-Based and Grounds-Free Voluntarily Child Free Couples: Privacy Management and Reactions of Social Network Members

Regehr, Kelly A. 05 1900 (has links)
Voluntarily child free (VCF) individuals face stigmatization in a pronatalist society that labels those who do not want children as deviant. Because of this stigmatization, VCF couples face privacy issues as they choose to reveal or conceal their family planning decision and face a variety of reactions from social network members. Therefore, communication privacy management and communication accommodation theory was use to examine this phenomenon. Prior research found two different types of VCF couples: grounds-based and grounds-free. Grounds-based individuals cite medical or biological reasons for not having children, while grounds-free individuals cite social reasons for not having children. The purpose of this study is to examine how grounds-based and grounds-free VCF couples manage their disclosure of private information and how social network members react to their family planning decision. Findings revealed that grounds-free individuals are more likely to engage in the self-defense hypothesis and grounds-based individuals are more likely to engage in the expressive need hypothesis. Grounds-based individuals were asked about their decision in dyadic situations, whereas grounds-free individuals were asked at group gatherings. Additionally, social network members used under-accommodation strategies the most frequently and grounds-free individuals experienced more name calling than grounds-based. Finally, while grounds-free individuals experienced non-accommodation and over-accommodation strategies, grounds-based did not. Findings suggest that grounds-free individuals are more stigmatized by social network members. Implications for merging CPM and CAT are discussed.

To reach our goal, we conducted an investigation, guided by the psychoanalytic, Freudo-Lacanian theoretical field, as well as other theoretical constructs belonging to different areas of knowledge, such as Law, Gender and Queer Studies. At the time when we were carrying out the survey in the literature on the subject, we were articulating and problematizing our findings with our experience with the homoaffective couples that, in this work, we call "homoparentality clinic". We have identified that in the new forms of parenting the child often appears as an object referred to the opacity of a desire that she does not know. In homoparentality, the child assumes multiple phallic significations, in which the desire to have a child can be confused with a normatizing law, which legitimizes the family before the social. We perceive that there are difficulties, confusions of roles and places, on the part of the parents, which damages the fictional work of the child, leaving on it a concentrated of joy that emerges as an anguish difficult to bear, denounced by the new children's symptoms. It is necessary for the analyst to position himself as a reassuring partner, allowing the child to follow through with his family romance. The analyst should also intervene with the parents, making them talk about their own membership processes and the difficulties they face. We argue that this work brings important contributions to the study of homoparentality, mainly due to the clinical approach proposed. In addition, it contributes to the political debate, since the citizen-analyst should not be neutral and indifferent to the issues of his time.

Propiedades psicométricas del Cuestionario de Violencia entre Novios universitarios / Psychometrics Properties of the Dating Violence Questionnaire

Raiser Velarde, Romina Esperanza 04 December 2020 (has links)
The objective of this study was to determine the psychometric properties of the Dating Violence Questionnaire (Rodríguez, López, Rodríguez, Bringas & Antuña, 2010) in university students in the province of Tacna, Peru. Aspects psycholinguistiques du développement du bilinguisme précoce : une étude de cas d'un enfant bilingue français-russe de 2 à 4 ans / Psycholinguistic aspects of simultaneous bilingual acquisition : case study of a French-Russian bilingual child from 2;0 to 4;0

Bailleul, Oksana 17 October 2017 (has links)
This study focuses on language acquisition of a bilingual child growing up in a French-Russian speaking family. Recent research has shown that a range of factors such as parental input frequency, family discourse strategies can explain the language development processes which take place withing a bilingual family (Döpke, 1998 ; Lanza, 1997, 2004 ; De Houwer, 2009 ; King et Fogle, 2013, etc.) The goal is to understand how language exposure, family language policies and input frequency influence the child’s bilingual acquisition in this particular context. For doing that, the child was being recorded during spontaneous and natural interaction with both of her parents for the period of two years (from 2;00 to 4;00). The overall corpora are composed of 68 recording hours, while the analysed sample is based on 28 hours of transcribed data. The data gathered in this study strongly suggest the existence of clear correlation between input frequency, parental discourse strategies and child’s linguistic competence in both languages. The findings from the research show a shift from dominant bilingualism to the harmonious use of both languages at the age of 3. This shift is accompanied by the changes of the child’s linguistic soundscape, the use of parental discourse strategies and input frequency in Russian. The grammatical-categories emergence is characterized by a strong discrepancy in both languages: the acquisition of French follows developmental paths of French monolingual children, while Russian is acquired with a substantial time delay. The crosslinguistic influences, lexical, morphological and syntactic, support the idea of a common underlying proficiency.

Societal Influences on Relationship Satisfaction in Black-White Interracial Couples

Briana N Walker (8781260) 02 May 2020 (has links)
Interracial couples have different experiences compared to their intraracial counterparts. Interracial couples and their relationships (particularly their marriages) have been studied to see whether there are any effects on the relationship due to the couple’s inherent differences. However, the literature heavily focuses on interracial marriages while only touching on interracial relationships in general, with a primary focus on interracial couples of all kinds. With the tension between White and Black Americans over the years, one can wonder if there would be any noticeable differences within Black/White interracial couples with regard to racial identification and experienced discrimination due to the Black-White racial disparity. This study tested whether these factors contribute to the overall relationship satisfaction in Black/White interracial couples. Data were collected via MTurk and participants completed three assessments to capture how racial identity and experienced discrimination impact their relationship. Racial identity was assessed using Worrell, Mendoza, and Wang’s (2019) Cross Ethnic-racial Identity Scale- Adult (CERIS-A); perceived racial discrimination was assessed Conger’s (2006) revised version of Landrine et al.’s (2006) General Ethnic Discrimination Scale; and relationship satisfaction was assessed using Funk and Rogge’s (2007) Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI-16). It was predicted that experienced discrimination and racial identity would impact the relationship satisfaction of Black-White interracial couples. The results showed that experienced discrimination did significantly impact relationship satisfaction and racial identity, however, racial identity did not significantly impact relationship satisfaction in Black-White interracial couples. The lack of research on the CERIS-A’s validity when interacting with other constructs, a missing question on the CSI-16, and not accounting for biracial participants and their experiences with racial identity development are all limitations that should be considered when reviewing the results. Clinicians can use the information from this study to assist clients in having more conversations about their experiences of discrimination with one another and having them create their own meanings around interracial dating and racial identity.

Physical Activity and Relationship Functioning: Mediation Roles of Sexual Satisfaction and Self-Esteem

Schumacher, Matthew Robert 08 1900 (has links)
Little research has examined the role of physical activity in relationship functioning. Utilizing two heterosexual subsamples of 618 females and 155 males, results indicated that physical activity was positively correlated with sexual satisfaction and self-esteem for the female subsample, but was not significant for the male subsample. For both subsamples, although physical activity was not a significant unique predictor of relationship functioning in regression analyses, sexual satisfaction and self-esteem each significantly contributed the variance relationship functioning. The findings of this study increase our knowledge of mechanisms that impact sexual satisfaction, self-esteem, and physical activity among women, which in turn can potentially guide treatment planning and interventions.
