Lindh, Charlotta January 2011 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is how a suspected criminal has been described in written swedish media. The topic of the articles is the investigation of a man suspected for murder and for dismembering the victim during the winter of 2011. The purpose of this thesis is to try to answer the question of what the newspapers actually write to describe a suspect before he or she has been trialed in court. For the analyse of the articles, published in four of Swedens largest newspapers, critical discourse analysis has been used. The results have been compared with other analyses made on other cases and have been discussed with Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of action. Results of the thesis show that there are similarities beetween this study and others, in a number of ways. The descriptions of the suspect are influenced by wich agent is allowed to speak in the text, by the words that are used in the articles and if the agents in the texts are known to the reader or not.

[en] THE FLOWER OF OBSESSION: NELSON RODRIGUES`S EARLY CRIME JOURNALISM / [pt] FLOR DE OBSESSÃO: AS REPORTAGENS POLICIAIS DO JOVEM NELSON RODRIGUES

IRENE BOSISIO QUENTAL 19 August 2005 (has links)
[en] The goal of this thesis is to analyze in particular the crime journalism produced by Nelson Rodrigues in the beginning of his career. Collected by Caco Coelho in O baú de Nelson Rodrigues, the texts include both reviews signed by Rodrigues and crime reports published in the newspapers A Manhã, Crítica and O Globo between 1928 and 1935. Though the news items are unsigned, they display telltale marks of his tragic style and his extremely melodramatic language. The study begins with an examination of the style of crime journalism of the 20s, 30s and 40s, underscoring the sensational, feuilleton tone characteristic of the period and comparing it with crime journalism as it is practiced today. Then we focus on Rodrigues s own pieces, showing how the young reporter s prose already contained the obsessions and the language later to be found in the stories of A vida como ela é and throughout his other fiction, crônicas and plays. Finally we analyze the seductiveness of the author s exaggerated tragic tone as an element of the success of one of the greatest innovators of the Brazilian literature.

A content analysis of the helicopter robbery in Swedish tabloids between 2009 and 2010

Björe, Rasmus, Backlund, Gustav January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to examine how Sweden’s two biggest tabloids, Aftonbladet and Expressen, frame spectacular crime and specifically how they covered the Helicopter robbery that occurred in 2009. We identified three main participants in the story, the police, the culprits and the victims. We examined how much and what kind of space the identified participants were given and how the two newspapers constructed the participants in a dramaturgic sense.   Using a quantitative content analysis method we found that the time period included 433 articles in both newspapers. From the original articles, we picked and examined 19 articles with a qualitative content analysis method and also used framing theory in order to be able to examine how the participants were portrayed in Aftonbladet and Expressen.   The culprits were given far most space in both Aftonbladet and Expressen. The study show that the police was given second most space and that the victims were hardly ever written about at all, in contrast to recent studies showing that victims of crime often are depicted as the main character in articles regarding crime. The results also show that the story as a whole carried a lot of resemblance to the classic Hollywood movie plot. The police were portrayed as incompetent, creating a conflict within the justice system community. The culprits were portrayed as the protagonist of the story with highly competent features, whilst the victims were portrayed as scared and helpless.

Death becomes her. Journalistic portrayals of murdered women and their bodies as subject, object and abject in Swedish high profile murder cases

Kjellman Wall, Maria January 2019 (has links)
This thesis concerns how murdered women and their bodies are represented through written and visual language in tabloid crime journalism. Two Swedish high profile murders were chosen through a purposeful sampling, and 436 articles from Sweden's two largest tabloid newspapers, Aftonbladet and Expressen, were thematized through Thematic Analysis. After that, a smaller sample was analyzed in depth through Critical Discourse Analysis and Multimodal Visual Analysis. The results show that murdered women and their bodies are represented as both subjects, objects and abject. However, when constructed as a social subject through personal traits and agency, the personalities of the murdered women were also used to establish a normative objectification of how women ought and ought not to behave. Furthermore, the material body as an object was visually absent from the material but made visible through detailed and repetitive descriptions of violence and interdiscursive connections to popular culture. Consequently, the abject body produced fear within society, but also provided an arena for a shared identity and the restoration of social order, through extensive portrayals of public grief and thorough media coverage of the legal process.             These results contribute both new knowledge and the suggestion of a suitable theoretical framework for further academic research. Hopefully, these findings will also result in an academic, as well as a professional, discussion regarding the current mediated discourse within crime journalism.

He will always have a bad reputation” : A survey study about the trust in Swedish media after #metoo

Carlsson, Ola, Ranäng, Tobias January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how the reader perceived the media's reporting during #metoo, and if the reader’s trust in Swedish journalism was affected after publishing the names of suspected offenders.  The research questions examined were: How did readers perceive the Swedish media coverage of #metoo? Has the general confidence in Swedish journalism been affected after #metoo? How do the readers perceive Martin Timell today, after he was acquitted of crime? Do the readers think that the name publication of suspected offenders during #metoo was justified?  We used a survey study to investigate our selected research questions. 214 participators took the survey and responded to 9 questions. The image of Martin Timell that was framed in the media in autumn 2017 generally remains, and despite Timell's acquittal of accusations, the reader perceives him as guilty.

The case of Emilia Lundberg: A cocktail of sex, drugs and crime journalism : A qualitative study about how local and evening press illustrate the case of Emilia Lundberg

Svensson, Linn, Wiener, Elsa January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study was to illustrate how a female murder victim is portrayed in local and evening press journalism. This was investigated through a critical discourse analysis that compares Kristianstadsbladet's and Aftonbladet's news reporting in connection with the murder of Emilia Lundberg in November 2019. With a total of 23 articles from Kristianstadsbladet and Aftonbladet we analysed the articles by first studying the texts and their properties. This was done by analysing the discourses that appear in the selection of articles and the word choices that describe Emilia Lundberg as a person and victim. Then we analysed the journalistic conventions, such as dramatisation and sensationalisation which appear in the reporting.  We came to the conclusion that Aftonbladet was more descriptive and focused on portraying Emilia as a person than Kristianstadsbladet was. Emilia was described in Aftonbladet as an innocent, young woman who was murdered by an evil and emotionless murderer, which were elements that could connect her to being classified as an ideal victim in the reporting. However, there were also several important elements in the reporting that spoke against her being an ideal victim, which we believed weighed heavier. This led us to draw the final conclusion that Emilia could not be considered to be an ideal victim in Aftonbladet and Kristianstadsbladet's reporting. We also drew the conclusion that the local and evening press does not deviate from dramatising and sensationalising events of the crime during the reporting process, but that it occurs to a greater extent in the evening press.
