Det omöjliga vittnandet : Om vittnesmålets pedagogiska möjligheter / The Impossibile Witnessing : On the Pedagogical Possibilities of TestimonyHållander, Marie January 2016 (has links)
There is great interest in testimonies, both in society at large and as a theoretical concept. Within educational research testimony is used to understand and develop epistemological, political or ethical thinking. In this thesis I investigate what testimonies and the act of witnessing can do in relation to education. More specifically, I investigate what kind of pedagogical possibilities there are in witnessing and testimony, in relation to teaching as well as outside schools. Focusing on three different aspects (of these phenomena), namely representation, subjectivity and emotion I discuss different examples of testimonies. These are Collateral Murder, The Living History Forum’s book Tell Ye Your Children…, Gruva by Sara Lidman and Odd Uhrbom, and pictures with Alan Kurdi from 2015 taken by Nilüfer Demir. I examine the pedagogical possibilities of testimony and witnessing based on the idea that such possibilities are situated in human imperfection and lack of ability, where the knowledge is placed in the impossibility, in our not-knowing. This dialectical understanding, drawing on Giorgio Agamben, implies a different formulation than previous research, by highlighting the impossibility of witnessing and of testimony, for example by how the testimony does not stand outside the political, and in Western society more specifically, the capitalist system. Through the analyses of the different aspects (representation, subjectivity, emotions) I show how testimonies can serve as a way to control the students' emotions and perceptions (drawing on Sara Ahmed), and influence the perception of the society in which the students live. I have also shown how the act of witnessing can be done at the witness’ own expense (by drawing on The Latina Feminist Group). It can mean that testimonies work as a way to reproduce various stereotypes of different people's suffering and thus consolidate existing power structures and identities. The conditions surrounding witnessing and testimonies make witnessing an act that can be perceived as a poetic testimony, as well as an exploitation or expropriation of already vulnerable people. With this said, I also argue for the value of bringing into teaching testimonies that testify of suffering. Testimonies stand between the past and the future and have important things to speak of. If testimonies are not heard in teaching, there is a possibility of silencing and forgetting the wounds in history. It is in teaching where the repetitive work of a literary reading (Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak) can take place. A literary reading that emphasizes the difficulties in testimonies and one’s own part of and relation to it. It is the effort of the repetitive work in teaching that can lead to pedagogical possibility, and through that, enter the future.

A netnographic study on the perception of beggars on a swedish internet forumBarrington, Hilda, Sundkvist, Elin January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study has been to highlight and describe the perceptions of beggars, by studying and analyzing empirical data collected through observing different threads on a Swedish discussion forum. We wanted to study how beggars are mentioned in the discussion forum to illustrate the opinions and perceptions. To analyze the data a qualitative method of meaning condensation were used. The result was analyzed from a perspective of deviant behavior and three theories: Goffman's theory about Stigma, Beckers labelling theory and the theory about the established and the outsiders by Elias. The results showed that beggars are categorized and described as criminals, misfits and frauds. The results also gave us the conclusion that there are negative attitudes towards beggars.

Um outro mundo é possível: a técnica do consenso na rede do Fórum Social Mundial / An another world is possible: the technique of consensus in the network of the World Social ForumGomes, Marcel de Souza 19 February 2009 (has links)
This research analyzes the World Social Forum one of the more important networks promoted by civil society organizations using recent developments of the theory of social movements on network and collective identity in the transnational space. It also uses Social Network Analysis to verify the power relations inside of the International Council of the Forum, its more representative department. The results point the existence of a powerful nucleus that keeps rules of behavior and some methodologies to mediate internal conflicts and to prevent the disaggregation of the group. They also indicate that old entities with more traditional structures, as nongovernmental organizations and grassroots movements, are more influential in the Forum than coalitions or other kinds of networks who emerge more recently in protests against neoliberal globalization. This conclusion polemizes with some studies that point coalitions as the strongest social movements of contemporaneity.

A internet e o Fórum Social Mundial - a ação política autônoma no mundo das redes / The internet and the World Social Forum the autonomous political action in the world of networksAlcântara, Ana Roberta Vieira de 21 September 2009 (has links)
The research investigates social and cultural changes linked to the development of information and communication technologies and how the mobilisation of global civil society happens throught the internet. Besides, some aspects of the network dynamic that prevail in post-modern relationships are analised, with emphasis on the autonomous political action of resistance groups. The main theme of this research is the relationship between the networks and the World Social Forum. The methodology consists in literature revision on two main fields: multi-disciplinary references and specific literature about the World Social Forum. Articles, news, websites and videos were also sources of information, besides the researcher´s participation in the events. The research, when working with a contemporary changing subject, raises a number of issues: how is it possible to maximize the use of network?; how does the relationship with information and knowledge change?; how do the networked relationships affect the articulation between individuals and groups and the mobilisation of resistance movements?; how can individuals participate actively in the networked public sphere to contribute to a more participatory, free and democratic society?

Previous issue date: 2017-10-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The present study proposes to analyze the health forum as a device for the creation of
healthcare networks, in conjunction with the idea of production of the commons, hereby
understood, alike with Espinosa, as everything that results from the gathering of people who
establish multiple and equivalent mannerisms and whose effect is the increase of potential in
each one. The health forums are organizational arrangements that bring together health
professionals from different departments to debate and negotiate strategies for building
Brazil’s publicly funded healthcare system (SUS), as well as critical analysis of health
practices within itself and joint networks. By setting itself up as a border place in public
policy, the aforementioned instrument, bears the potential to promote democratic ways of
doing / thinking about health. The research was conducted from observant participation in a
health forum in the Northern Zone of São Paulo, Brazil, with the sole purpose of analyzing
how the sociability experimentation, the production of the commons and the collective
construction of creative strategies operate inside the device. The main theme of the discussion
forum is the Psychosocial Attention Network, which aims to create links between the basic
healthcare devices, mental health, hospitals, amongst other areas beyond the healthcare
network. All the collected material (themes, dialogues, affections) has been kept in a field
diary, highlighting the concrete ways of establishing relationships in this collective space. The
said material has been analyzed from the institutional review perspective, in the form of
themes and critical events. It has been later presented in the form of construe scenes,
emphasizing the affections and power relations which surround the attendants. Based on the
theoretical recovery of network concepts and the production of the commons, and with the
assistance of authors such as Espinosa, Negri and Teixeira, we speculate the place of the
health forum in the framing of SUS. We also indicate the forum as a boundary between the
inside and the outside, the public and the private, a place of displacement of senses, in which
it is possible to identify community areas which provide creative solutions for the healthcare

Transfer Learning for Medication Adherence Prediction from Social Forums Self-Reported DataKyle Haas (5931056) 17 January 2019 (has links)

<p>Medication non-adherence and non-compliance left unaddressed can compound
into severe medical problems for patients. Identifying patients that are likely to
become non-adherent can help reduce these problems. Despite these benefits, monitoring adherence at scale is cost-prohibitive. Social forums offer an easily accessible,
affordable, and timely alternative to the traditional methods based on claims data.
This study investigates the potential of medication adherence prediction based on
social forum data for diabetes and fibromyalgia therapies by using transfer learning
from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS).
</p><p><br></p>
<p>Predictive adherence models are developed by using both survey and social forums
data and different random forest (RF) techniques. The first of these implementations
uses binned inputs from k-means clustering. The second technique is based on ternary
trees instead of the widely used binary decision trees. These techniques are able to
handle missing data, a prevalent characteristic of social forums data.
</p><p><br></p>
<p>The results of this study show that transfer learning between survey models and
social forum models is possible. Using MEPS survey data and the techniques listed
above to derive RF models, less than 5% difference in accuracy was observed between
the MEPS test dataset and the social forum test dataset. Along with these RF
techniques, another RF implementation with imputed means for the missing values
was developed and shown to predict adherence for social forum patients with an
accuracy >70%.

<p>This thesis shows that a model trained with verified survey data can be used
to complement traditional medical adherence models by predicting adherence from
unverified, self-reported data in a dynamic and timely manner. Furthermore, this
model provides a method for discovering objective insights from subjective social
reports. Additional investigation is needed to improve the prediction accuracy of the
proposed model and to assess biases that may be inherent to self-reported adherence
measures in social health networks.

Rösterna på Flashback : En studie om virtuell gemenskap på ett internetforum kring dödsskjutningarna i Malmö 2018 / The voices on Flashback : A study of virtual community on an internet forum around the death shootings in Malmö 2018Tajik, Amirali, Malinao, Lourdes January 2019 (has links)
Flashback is one of the most well known internet forums in Sweden. People visit the site to discuss different topics, to share information, to express opinions or to read posts by others. On Flashback’s ‘crime forum’ the users gather to share information but also to express opinions. These discussions have a tendency to become heated and with the increased wave of gangrelated violence and shootings in Malmö, Sweden 2018, forums like Flashback play an important role in what information is available to the public. This case was used to form the study’s main questions; How are facts used in threads and what are their sources? How do users interpret these events and how is it expressed through reasoning and personal opinions? How are opinions, behaviour and virtual community formed in an environment based on anonymity? To form a case and further investigate these questions we have organized different Flashback posts related to the Malmö-shootings and categorized them into themes. The interpretations would later on show various conclusions. Some conclusions were predicted, while other conclusions were shown when analyzing the material. The results showed that flashback-users use facts when sharing a link, to strengthen the shared information, to support theories about the case and sometimes when discussing the victims or suspects involved. How users interpret the events on Flashback is based on the intention of the individual. Some users are more likely to discuss political aspects. Other users intend to discuss the matter with an humours tone, these posts can be seen as an disinhibition effect (Suler 2004). Identity has shown to be a useful factor when analyzing an internet-forum. A conclusion from analyzing identity shows that behaviours are encouraged when the fear of being exposed is averted. Overall the result shows that the foundation of the virtual community on Flashback is the information that is shared between users.

Previous issue date: 2012-08-06 / This research is inserted in the realm of Applied Linguistics studies and aims to
identify mediating actions performed by students in the 2007 class of the
Specialization Course Teaching and Learning of the Portuguese Language for
through the interpretation of messages posted in the discussion forum. During
the activities developed in the course of Linguistic Pragmatics discipline, the
finding that some students when interacting with their classmates acted as
mediators led to the conception of this research whitch investigated the
conditions that can make the student a mediator, thus contributing to the study
of semiotic-pedagogic mediation that takes place in the online context. By
starting from the Vygotsky s notion of mediation (1967/2008), the theoretical
foundation of this study was grounded in authors interested in researching on
the conditions under which interaction through forums are carried out in the
online courses such as Gunawardena (1999), Garrison e Anderson (2003),
Pallof e Pratt (2004), Coffin et al. (2005, 2006), Celani e Collins (2006), Collins
(2008), Coll e Monereo (2010), Monereo e Pozo (2010), among others. The
interpretation of messages posted by student mediators was based on the
hermeneutic orientation supported by Ricoeur (2002, 2006, 2009), for whom the
actions expressed in written texts can become an object of science. The
research interpretation indicates the importance of the discussion forum as a
Gunawardena (1999), Garrison e Anderson (2003), Pallof e Pratt (2004), Coffin
colegas
