Öhlin, Sara January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the study was to shed light on the phenomenon healthism based on personal trainers’ perspective. Previous research has shown that healthism is a rapidly growing phenomenon in the western world. Based on the purpose, three issues were created; How do personal trainers discuss their view as a role model in health? How does health awareness appear in everyday life for personal trainer? What does a healthy lifestyle for personal trainer mean? The study used the qualitative method and consisted of four interviews. The informants were educated and worked in some form of personal training. A part of the the results show that personal trainers consider themselves as role models and representatives of health. This leads to the proper behavior must occur in an environment where clients or potential clients can keep track of one. Not having the right behavior in such situations can result in being considered as an extremely unreliable personal trainer. Another result shows that a healthy lifestyle is important for personal trainers but it is equally important not to have too healthy behavior either. A too healthy behavior or to have health as a religion can be regarded as unhealthy behavior. The conclusion in the paper suggest that the personal trainer is part of the healthism and fulfill some requirements to have health as a religion. But there is still a negative attitude towards taking health as a religion and prioritize health first. This can be explained on the basis that it is not socially acceptable yet to have health as a religion perhaps because it is such a new phenomenon.

Dětská obezita jako sociální hrozba v kontextu s výchovou dětí ke zdravému životnímu stylu na (bílinských) základních školách / Childhood obesity as a social threat in the context of chidren's education to a healthy lifestyle at primary schools (in the city of Bílina)

Türb, Štěpán January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation is focused on currently one of the most burning social problem - childhood obesity in Czech Republic. A research problem of the thesis is the growing prevalence of childhood obesity in the Czech Republic in the context of developing its ineffectively controlled determinant. Our research targets on children, more precisely said on pupils of four primary schools (in the Bílina city). Among the objectives of the thesis belongs a pupil categorization according to BMI (body mass index). A principal goal is an evaluation of level of support for children to a healthy lifestyle by primary schools. Data have been collected from the children themselves, as well as from the school management and the respective school founder (city or region). The results of the research point out that a prevalence of childhood obesity (for a sample of the pupils of bílina's primary schools) corresponds to the current development and proportional representation of overweight and obesity in our country. The case studies which are output as research section aimed at encouraging children to a healthy lifestyle from the school and the research...

Technology as a Health Intervention and the Self-Efficacy of Men

Maxwell, Karen Denise 01 January 2015 (has links)
Mortality rates in the United States are higher for men than they are for women as a result of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Despite these disproportionate rates, few health interventions are targeted to men, and limited knowledge exists regarding the specific components needed to design technology health tools to appeal to men. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between the use of technology health tools and the role of self-efficacy in men and the influence on participation in healthy lifestyle behaviors. A quasi-experimental design was used to analyze data collected from the Health Information National Trends Survey (N = 990). A group of men (n = 323) who used technology health tools were compared to a control group of men (n = 667) who did not use technology health tools. Results from the regression analysis indicated that the use of technology health tools for self-management of health behavior had a significant effect on participation in healthy lifestyle behavior (p = .026). Self-efficacy was also found to mediate the relationship between technology health tools and participation in healthy lifestyle behavior (p = .018). This study supports the United States federal government's Healthy People 2020 objective to increase the proportion of people who use Internet health management tools. The implications for positive social change include knowledge for developing targeted technology health interventions to increase the participation of men in healthy lifestyle behavior, reduce the number of men with chronic diseases, improve chronic disease management, and reduce healthcare costs in the United States.

[en] Among the many transformations in human relationships in this century, the role of domestic animals has demonstrated a singular expansion in meaning, the current connections between human and animal have evolved, assuming characteristics of social relationships. The consequent repercussion of this phenomenon is observed in the market of products and services. The food offered to animals for decades, dry food, is now being questioned and attributes previously associated only with humans are now also sought for pets. Pet owners started to adopt natural food, as a healthier alternative. This work through qualitative thematic exploration, offers a deeper vision of the characteristics and lifestyle, the motivations, and implications of this decision. From the "rising tide" to solidarity: disrupting dominant crisis discourses in dementia social policy in neoliberal times

MacLeod, Suzanne 26 March 2014 (has links)
As a social worker practising in long-term residential care for people living with dementia, I am alarmed by discourses in the media and health policy that construct persons living with dementia and their health care needs as a threatening “rising tide” or crisis. I am particularly concerned about the material effects such dominant discourses, and the values they uphold, might have on the collective provision of care and support for our elderly citizens in the present neoliberal economic and political context of health care. To better understand how dominant discourses about dementia work at this time when Canada’s population is aging and the number of persons living with dementia is anticipated to increase, I have rooted my thesis in poststructural methodology. My research method is a discourse analysis, which draws on Foucault’s archaeological and genealogical concepts, to examine two contemporary health policy documents related to dementia care – one national and one provincial. I also incorporate some poetic representation – or found poetry – to write up my findings. While deconstructing and disrupting taken for granted dominant crisis discourses on dementia in health policy, my research also makes space for alternative constructions to support discursive and health policy possibilities in solidarity with persons living with dementia so that they may thrive. / Graduate / 0452 / 0680 / 0351 / macsuz@shaw.ca
