Caron-Diotte, Mathieu 04 1900 (has links)
Identity integration, the perception of compatibility, complementarity and coherence between an individual's different identities, is associated with greater psychological adjustment. According to the Cognitive Developmental Model of Social Identity Integration (CDMSII), the creation of cognitive links between identities and the grouping of identities into supraordinal identities are the main mechanisms behind integration. The present research programme proposes to define and empirically investigate the cognitive processes behind identity integration. Following connectionist and Bayesian models of cognition, it is proposed that association and category learning explain identity integration processes. Indeed, according to connectionist models, the perception of similarities between identities and the simultaneous exposure to them promotes the creation of cognitive links. Moreover, Bayesian models of categorization suggest that the representation of supraordinal identities become more complex with time and experience, going from a prototypîcal representation to a representation by exemplars. As representations by exemplars are more flexible, they should be associated with more integration. Three papers designed to test these hypotheses are presented. The first paper investigates whether cognitive links are established between integrated identities. The second paper investigates the plausibility of cognitive mechanisms in a correlational manner. The third and final paper examines the role of representations of exogroup identity and supraordinal identities in integration. Overall, the results of the studies presented in the papers suggest that the mechanisms proposed by the CDMSII are plausible.

Wideband Terrestrial Path Loss Measurement Results For Characterization of Pico-cell Radio Links at 38 GHz and 60 GHz Bands of Frequencies

Kukshya, Vikas 22 June 2001 (has links)
The advent of Internet based digital services, and bandwidth-intensive business and personal applications has necessitated deployment of broadband network access technologies. Research analysts project that the U.S. market for broadband wireless networking will grow to nearly $2 billion by 2004 and Local Multipoint Distribution Services (LMDS) have enormous potential to emerge as the most reliable and cost-effective solution. However, in order to design and deploy LMDS systems, it is vital for system designers to be able to predict the behavior of mm-waves (28, 38 and 60GHz) during different weather conditions, especially rain. This research attempts to characterize the performance of pico-cell scenario broadband wireless channels by measuring path loss statistics during different weather conditions. Hardware and software components of a wideband direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSS) channel sounding system, used extensively throughout measurement campaigns, are discussed in detail in this dissertation. The measurement plan comprehensively describes the methodology, logistics, equipment setup, and calibration procedures for propagation measurement campaigns. Power Delay Profile (PDP) snapshots recorded during measurement campaigns are thoroughly analyzed using the 'Channel Imaging Analysis Suite' and Path Loss as well as Rain Attenuation statistics, calculated from recorded PDP data files, are classified and tabulated on the basis of measurement locations, propagation frequencies and antenna polarizations. Path Loss Exponent values are also calculated and Rain Attenuation statistics are compared with popular rain models. Results from Frequency Diversity measurement campaigns are also presented. / Master of Science

Teachers and students are invited to attend learning environments mediated by computer. Taking this need into account, this study contemplates the distance education context and aims at analyzing reculturing, restructuring and retiming processes (Fullan, 1996) in teacher-students discourse at Teachers Links Programme at PUCSP, intended for state school teachers of English. The main theoretical underpinning for the research is provided by studies of Fullan (1996), Hannay & Ross (1997) about reculturing, restructuring and retiming processes. The study also addresses the concept of social and teaching presence by Garrison & Anderson (2003). The research questions are the following: 1) How do teachers discourses collaborate for teachers-students live deeply possible reculturing, restructuring and retiming processes? 2) What evidence of reculturing, restructuring and retiming processes can be seen, during the process of learning in the teachers-students messages? The research methodology is based on interpretative approach with analyzing discussion forums and interviews with the participants. Results suggest some linguistic data that can characterize processes of reculturing, structuring and retiming processes in the teachers-students discourses / As transformações ocorridas na sociedade nas últimas décadas vêm sugerindo novas configurações nas práticas educacionais.

Fugaciu, Florin 02 May 2000 (has links) (PDF)
The experimental studies are at such small clusters heavy. Knowledges about thus clusters are very important, for example in the field of the nucleation of diamond on substrates, or for the carbon nano-technology (fullerene, nanotubes), or for local defects in carbon systems. There were simulated curved interfaces in diamond. Firstly with an empirical potential. Than I developed a method, in wich the defects and the structure around them are treated by a quantum mechanical algorithm and the rest with a near to ideal structure with an empirical potential. So, it is possible an accurate calculation of great systems of about 10 (high)4 atoms on wich only locally quantum mechanical methods are necessary. With this hybrid-code diamond nuclei on silicon substrate were simulated. The stability of the diamond nuclei on the silicon substrate, the critical radius of the nuclei and the changes of the nuclei during his transformation was investigated. Another field of investigations is the molecular dynamics simulation of free carbon clusters. The initial structures had spherical, ellipsoidical or square form and consists of diamond and graphite or a free form in the case of amorphous carbon. It was demonstrated that diamond transforms at higher temperatures and under irradiation in carbon onions. The genesis of the nucleus of a carbon onion with two shells was here for the first time simulated. The existence of the cross-links between the shells of a carbon onion was demonstrated. These existence was expected from the experimentators. The cross-links are the initiators of the transformation of carbon onions to diamond. The center of carbon onions is under self-pressure, because the distance between the outer shells is about 3.34 Å and between the inner shells about 2.2 Å. On the Tradeoff Of Average Delay, Average Service Cost, and Average Utility for Single Server Queues with Monotone Policies

Sukumaran, Vineeth Bala January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, we study the tradeoff of average delay with average service cost and average utility for both continuous time and discrete time single server queueing models without and with admission control. The continuous time and discrete time queueing models that we consider are motivated by cross-layer models for point-to-point links with random packet arrivals and fading at slow and fast time scales. Our studies are motivated by the need to optimally tradeoff the average delay of the packets (a network layer performance measure) with the average service cost of transmitting the packets, e.g. the average power required for transmission (a physical layer performance measure) under a lower bound constraint on the average throughput, in various point-to-point communication scenarios. The tradeoff problems are studied for a class of monotone and stationary scheduling policies and under the assumption that the service cost rate and utility rate are respectively convex and concave functions of the service rate and arrival rate. We also consider the problem of optimally trading off the average delay and average error rate of randomly arriving message symbols which are transmitted over a noisy point-to-point link, in which case the service cost function is non-convex. The solutions to the tradeoff problems that we address in the thesis are asymptotic in nature, and are similar in spirit to the Berry-Gallager asymptotic bounds. It is intuitive that to keep a queue stable under a lower bound constraint on the average utility a minimum number of customers have to be served per unit time. This in turn implies that queue stability requires a minimum average service cost expenditure. In the thesis we obtain an asymptotic characterization of the minimum average delay for monotone stationary policies subject to an upper bound constraint on the average service cost and a lower bound constraint on the average utility, in the asymptotic regime where the average service cost constraint is made arbitrarily close to the above minimum average service cost. In the thesis, we obtain asymptotic lower bounds on the minimum average delay for the cases for which lower bounds were previously not known. The asymptotic characterization of the minimum average delay for monotone stationary policies, for both continuous time and discrete time models, is obtained via geometric bounds on the stationary probability of the queue length, in the above asymptotic regime. The restriction to monotone stationary policies enables us to obtain an intuitive explanation for the behaviour of the asymptotic lower bounds using the above geometric bounds on the stationary probability distribution of the queue length. The geometric bounds on the stationary probability of the queue length also lead to a partial asymptotic characterization of the structure of any optimal monotone stationary policy, in the above asymptotic regime, which was not available in previous work. Furthermore, the geometric bounds on the stationary probability can be extended to analyse the tradeoff problem in other scenarios, such as for other continuous time queueing models, multiple user communication models, queueing models with service time control, and queueing models with general holding costs. Usually, queueing models with integer valued queue evolution, are approximated by queueing models with real valued queue evolution and strictly convex service cost functions for analytical tractability. Using the asymptotic bounds, we show that for some cases the average delay does not grow to infinity in the asymptotic regime, although the approximate model suggests that the average delay does grow to infinity. In other cases where the average delay does grow to infinity in the asymptotic regime, our results illustrate that the tradeoff behaviour of the approximate model is different from that of the original integer valued queueing model unless the service cost function is modelled as the piecewise linear lower convex envelope of the service cost function for the original model.

Exploring the link between aid and economic growth : an African perspective

Khampha, Avhatakali Tshifaro 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDF (Development Finance))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is a fact that development aid represents the single most important source of external finance for most developing countries. This study sought to answer an important question relating to whether aid has a positive impact on economic growth or not. There is much literature on the subject and the views are quite diverse. Using the World Development Indicators (WDI) data, a cross-section regression analysis was performed over a period of 16 years and existing literature on the subject was re-examined. Of importance, this study tries to understand what the determinants or triggers of economic growth are, especially in developing economies. The results show that, although no significant relationship could be found between economic growth and development aid, there is strong evidence that there is a significant positive relationship between economic growth and the important triggers of economic growth used in the study, namely exports and investments. These are important components for the growth of any economy. The implicit conclusion is that since these two components are being impacted positively by aid, it follows then that the link between economic growth and aid can be considered to be a positive one. These findings go against the critics of development aid who maintain that aid that is being pumped into developing economies, especially the African continent, is actually just going into a big black hole and could be used more effectively somewhere else. This study proves that this is not the case and donor countries need to intensify their efforts of providing aid to poor countries because they need it and it is actually making a difference.

Bouvier, Simon 08 1900 (has links)
Understanding the structure of software is an important first step in solving tasks of analysis and maintenance on it. However, in addition to the links defined by the hierarchy, there exists another type of links between elements of software that are called adjacency links. A complete understanding of software must take account of all these types of links. Visualization tools are generally effective in helping a developer in his understanding of software by presenting the information in a clear and concise manner. However, viewing these two types of links generate in general a lot of visual clutter, making these visualizations inefficient to provide useful information on these links. We propose in this M.Sc. thesis a 3D visualization tool that can represent both the hierarchical structure of an application and the adjacency relationships between its elements. Our tool uses three different types of layout to represent the hierarchy. Each layout can support efficiently the display of adjacency links. To represent adjacency links, we propose a 3D version of the Hierarchical Edge Bundles algorithm. We also use a metaheuristic algorithm to improve our layouts to further reduce visual clutter in the adjacency links. Moreover, our tool provides a set of interaction possibilities that allows a user to navigate through the information provided by our visualization. Our contributions have been evaluated successfully on large software systems.

L'Azerbaïdjan, les hydrocarbures et les pipelines : réseaux sociotechniques et régionalisation / Azerbaïdjan, hydrocarbon resources and pipelines : sociotechnical networks and regionalization

Lussac, Samuel 14 November 2011 (has links)
This dissertation looks at the socio-political impacts of the pipelines that have beenimplemented in the South Caucasus since 1991. It is based on a theoreticalframework mixing Actor-Network Theory, Norbert Elias’s sociology andmanagement approaches. It assumes that the construction of an Azerbaijanihydrocarbons transportation complex system sheds light into the evolution of theSouth Caucasian configuration. First, this research studies interactions that emergeLUSSAC Samuel | Science Politique | Doctorat | 201114around the implementation of export routes for Azerbaijani oil and gas resources. It highlights the development of new forms of governance, which mostly benefit tothe oil company BP. Second, this dissertation demonstrates that the sociotechnicalnetworks built around these new export routes contribute to the evolution of theSouth Caucasian configuration. These networks overflow the economic sphere tofoster regionalization between Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. Third, thisresearch underlines the benefits the Azerbaijani ‘state-company’ retrieves fromthis hydrocarbons-based regionalization. Baku takes advantage of oil and gasresources to increase its economic and political influence within the SouthCaucasian configuration. Therefore, the Actor-Network Theory helps to shed lightinto the economic and political role of hydrocarbons in the rise of Azerbaijan. From a failed state, this country has now established itself as a regional power.
