Silesia greatly differed from other lands of the Bohemian Crown with regard to its specific political, administrative, religious and cultural development. This situation was caused partly due to the fragmentation of Silesian territory. In the Middle Ages, Silesia was divided among many independent principalities ruled by the members of the Piast Dynasty. During the 14th century the Silesian princes accepted the sovereignty of the Bohemian king. When the ruling dynasties died out, these principalities were inherited by the Crown. The king could then grant the principality to the members of noble families. At the same time as the Habsburgs entered the Bohemian throne, reformation began to spread in Silesia. By the end of 16th century most of the Silesian princes had converted to lutheranism. The only Catholic prince was the bishop of Wrocław as a master of Nysa principality. Approximately 90 percent of the Silesian inhabitants had become Lutheran by the end of 16th century. Confesinal tensions were simmering throughout the Habsburg Monarchy. With the help of Bohemian estates, the protestant Silesian princes received the letter of majesty containing religious rights (1609). Ayant vécu de 1771 à 1841, Édouard Bignon incarne la génération d’hommes qui a traversé, non sans encombre, la Révolution, le Directoire, le Consulat, l’Empire, la Restauration et la monarchie de Juillet. Sa carrière est le reflet des changements politiques français. Précepteur à la fin de l’Ancien Régime, il s’enrôle dans l’armée en 1793 pour fuir les proscriptions de la Terreur. Sous le Directoire, en 1797, il intègre la carrière diplomatique au sein de laquelle il reste dix-neuf années, jusqu’en 1815 : il y connaît une progression continue, passant du rang de second secrétaire de légation en 1797 à celui de ministre plénipotentiaire en Pologne en 1813. Après avoir participé aux Cent-Jours, il se retire de la vie publique. Deux ans après Waterloo, il est élu député et siège dans les rangs de l’opposition libérale jusqu’à la chute de la monarchie bourbonienne. Indépendamment de ses mandats de députés, il se lance dans une carrière de publiciste et d’historien qui lui assure une notoriété grandissante. En effet, dans son testament, Napoléon Ier lui a commandé une histoire diplomatique de la France à laquelle Bignon s’attelle dès 1821. Cette étude biographique, qui embrasse la totalité de sa carrière, entend mettre à l’honneur le parcours d’un diplomate napoléonien à l’envergure secondaire, les activités d’un parlementaire sous la Restauration et la monarchie Juillet, et l’originalité d’un historien de l’Empire. / Born in 1771 and died in 1841, Édouard Bignon embodies the generation who has live, with some trouble, through the French Revolution, the Directory, the Consulate, the First Empire, the Restoration and the July Monarchy. His career reflects all the French political changes. A private tutor, he enlisted in 1793 while trying to avoid being arrested. During the Directory, in 1797, he joined the Foreign Office and stayed in this departement until 1815 : he was constantly promoted, from the position of 2nd secretary in 1797 to minister plenipotentiary in Poland in 1813. As he joined the ranks of Napoleon during The Hundred Days, he had to retire from public life once Louis XVIII came back. Two years after Waterloo, he became a member of Parliament and sat among the liberals until the Bourbons fall. Separately from his political activities, he published several historical books which rose his popularity. In his will, Napoleon asked him to write the diplomatic history of his reign. Begun in 1821, the Histoire de France was issued from 1829 to 1850 and split into 14 volumes. In 1830, he contributed to the July Monarchy’s birth and became one of its support in Parliament : Louis-Philippe rewarded him and appointed him as peer of France in 1837, as a public recognition for his duties. This study which tackles all Bignon’s activities, aims to emphasize a medium scale diplomatic experience, parliamentarian’s occupations during the Restoration and the July Monarchy and Napoleon historian’s originality.

Le 9 octobre 1733, une circulaire du Chancelier Henri-François d’Aguesseau est envoyée à l’ensemble des intendants et des procureurs généraux du royaume. C’est le début des « états des crimes dignes de mort ou de peines afflictives », une enquête réalisée sur près de soixante-dix ans et qui a pour but de contrôler l’activité des officiers de justice. Sa réalisation et son exploitation mettent en lumière le travail de la monarchie administrative, qu’il s’agisse des instances gouvernementales comme la chancellerie ou de l’administration provinciale (intendants et subdélégués). Elle nous informe aussi sur les relations entre les différents acteurs (officiers et administrateurs) qui interviennent au cours de sa réalisation. Enfin, en s’intéressant aux crimes graves, cette enquête nous interroge sur la manière d’appréhender et de définir le crime au XVIIIe siècle tout en nous offrant une vision globale de la criminalité en France. / On October 9, 1733, a circular from Chancellor Henri-Francois d'Aguesseau is sent to the whole of the intendants and attorneys general of the kingdom. This is the beginning of the « états des crimes dignes de mort ou de peines affictives », a survey carried out for nearly seventy years and which aims to control the activity of the officers of justice. Its realization and exploitation inform us about the work of the administrative monarchy, be it governmental bodies such as the Chancery or the provincial administration (intendants and subdelegates). It also informs us about the relations between the various actors (officers of justice and administrators) that intervene during its realization. Finally, by investigating serious crimes, this survey questions us about grasping and defining crime in the eighteenth century while offering us a global view of criminalty in France.

O presente trabalho investiga os métodos utilizados pelo etno-historiador Serge Gruzinski – as Connected Histories e a História das Sensibilidades – com a finalidade de compreender como foram construídas as instituições jurídico-políticas pela monarquia católica na América Espanhola até o final da dinastia dos Habsburgos, a partir de uma realidade hegemônica preexistente nos povos pré-colombianos. Não foi possível a simples implantação do sistema institucional hispânico e também não se perpetuaram as instituições pré-colombianas, criandose instituições mescladas. Trata-se de uma realidade complexa, na qual não podem ser considerados apenas indígenas e espanhóis, pois através deste contato surgiram os mestiços e na América nasceram os criollos. Aportaram no Novo Mundo negros, povos de outras raças que se misturaram. Esta mistura não ocorreu apenas no aspecto biológico, mas antes na religião, na escrita e nas instituições. O método das connected histories foi criado por Sanjay Subrahmanyam e adotado por Gruzinski. Os principais desencadeadores deste método, quando aplicado à América Espanhola, são: a função mediadora dos passeurs culturels a descentralização da história e as mestiçagens. Os passeurs são quem realiza os processos de ocidentalização e de globalização. A descentralização da história substitui o polo único europeu ou ibérico por uma pluralidade de centros localizados na periferia, buscando a elaboração da história de forma global e não reducionista. A Monarquia Católica é o campo de observação e aplicação deste método porque está para além dos limites do Estado-nacional. Os elementos mestiços tem sido ignorados ou desvalorizados ao longo da história, mas são importantes porque aprofundam a história e apresentam as realidades complexas, para além de espanhóis e indígenas. Destaca-se também a importância das imagens e do imaginário, que podem expressar uma ideia diretamente, cujas reações são difíceis de traduzir em palavras. É importante captar a história para além das expressões intelectuais ou técnicas, sob pena de haver um reducionismo na apreensão do passado. Trata-se do método da história das sensibilidades. Por fim, é importante destacar a visão de Matthew Restall em relação aos mitos da conquista espanhola, com sua crítica ao mito da superioridade dos espanhóis, pois não podemos partir da premissa de que os espanhóis eram em algum sentido melhores do que os nativos americanos, sob pena de não compreendermos a complexidade da história gerada a partir do contato entre estes dois mundos. / The present work searches the methods used by the etno historian Serge Gruziski – The Connected Histories and the Sensibilities’ History – to understand how the Catholic Monarchy built the political and juridical institutions of the Spanish America until the end of the Habsburg Dynasty, upon a hegemonic reality pre-existent in the pre-Columbian peoples. The simple implantation of the Spanish institutional system was impossible, as was the perpetuation of the pre-Columbian institutions, originating mixed institutions. It was a complex reality, in which we cannot just consider Indians and Spaniards, because from this very contact emerged mestizos and in America, creoles were born. Negroes and other races docked in America and mixed. This mix don´t happen only in the biologic sense, but also and above all in the religion, in the writings and in the institutions. The connected histories method was created by Sanjay Subrahmanyam and adopted by Gruzinski. The main elements of this method, when applied to the Spanish America, are the mediator paper of the passeurs culturels, the history´s decentralization and the miscegenation. The passeurs are the actors who made the processes of the westernization and globalization. The history´s decentralization replaces the only European pole by a plurality of centers situated in the periphery, seeking to elaborate a global history and not a reductionist version of it. The Catholic Monarchy is the field of observation and application of this method, because it is beyond the limits of the State Nation. The mestizos has been ignored or devaluated through the history, but they are important because they deepen the history and show complex realities, beyond Spaniards and Indians. Noteworthy is also the importance of the images and the imaginary, that can express an idea directly, whose reactions are difficult to translate in words. It´s important to understand the history beyond the intellectual and technical expressions, otherwise we generate a reductionist view and comprehension of the past. This is the method of the Sensibilities’ History. Finally, it’s important to highlight Matthew Restall’s view towards the myths of the Spanish Conquer, with his critic to the myth of the Spanish superiority, because we cannot start by the premise that the Spaniards were in either way better than the native Americans, otherwise we will be unable to understand the complexity of the history generated by the contact between this two worlds.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro / O presente trabalho busca analisar dois manuais de história do Brasil produzidos e publicados entre as décadas de 1850 e 1870. São eles: o Epítome da História do Brasil e o Epítome Chronologico da História do Brasil, escritos, respectivamente, por José Pedro Xavier Pinheiro e Caetano Lopes de Moura. Pretende-se evidenciar aspectos relativos às trajetórias dos dois autores, assim como suas inserções diretas ou indiretas no contexto político e cultural do Segundo Reinado e as motivações que os levaram a produzir obras voltadas ao ensino da história do país. A análise focaliza a importância conferida à história no período sua escrita e seu ensino para a sociedade letrada do Brasil imperial, sobretudo no que dizia respeito à consolidação de um ideal de nação brasileira. A historiografia gerada em torno do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro e o ensino da história pátria no Colégio Pedro II faziam parte de um mesmo movimento que agregava as preocupações concernentes ao fortalecimento de um sentimento de pertença à nação, construída sob os auspícios do Estado imperial. Desse modo, produções como as referidas obras foram importantes por formar os futuros cidadãos ativos do Brasil, por meio da iniciação de valores julgados adequados: o amor à comunidade imaginada brasileira e o respeito às instituições monárquicas. / This monograph seeks to analyze two Brazilian History mannuals produced and published between the decades of 1850 and 1870. Those are: Epítome da História do Brasil and Epítome Chronologico da História do Brasil, written, respectively, by José Pedro Xavier Pinheiro and Caetano Lopes de Moura. It is intended to make evident aspects that relate to the trajectories of both authors, as well as to their insertion direct or indirect in the cultural and political context of the Second Monarchy and the motivations that led them to produce works guided towards the teaching of history in Brazil. The analysis focus on the importance attributed to history throughout the period its writing and its teaching for the educated society of the Brazilian empire, especially regarding to the consolidation of a Brazilian national ideal. The historiography produced around the Brazilian Historic and Geographic Institute and the teaching of national history at the Pedro II school were part of a single movement that weld together the concerns regarding the strengthening of a sentiment of belonging to the nation, constructed under the auspices of the imperial State. As such, works like the ones already mentioned were an important factor in the formation of the future Brazilian active citizens, through the conveyance of values deemed appropriate: love to the Brazilian imagined community and to the monarchys institutions.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro / Esta tese investiga, através das produções do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro entre 1838 e 1889, sobretudo o seu periódico, os limites para a escrita da história do presente no século XIX. Os sócios, imbuídos de um discurso que por vezes legitimava essa prática por considerá-la pertinente em uma associação próxima ao imperador D. Pedro II, em geral a desqualificavam em prol de uma concepção moderna de história na qual o afastamento temporal, combinado à imparcialidade, era condição fundamental para se chegar à verdade dos fatos, e de contingências políticas do próprio tempo. Assim, a partir da análise do cotidiano da associação extraiu-se uma sequência de procedimentos que levou à consideração de que a força da censura foi muito maior do que a da permissividade em relação ao tratamento de fatos coetâneos naquele momento. A utilização de outras fontes de pesquisa, como memórias históricas e autobiografias produzidas fora do grêmio, além da análise das produções do Institut Historique de Paris, permitiu a ampliação da problemática e a conclusão de que se não havia um único conjunto de regras a partir do qual o historiador devia se pautar, mesmo no IHGB, fora dele essa diversidade era ainda maior e nisso incluía-se o problema da história contemporânea. / This thesis investigates, through the production of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro between 1838 and 1889, especially its journal, the limits for the writing of presents history in the nineteenth century. The associates, imbued with a speech that sometimes legitimized this practical, considering the relevance of the close association between the institution and the Emperor D. Pedro II, generally disqualified it on favor of a historys modern conception at which the temporal distance, combined with impartiality, was an essential condition to get to the truth of the facts, in addition to the political contingencies of the own time. Therefore, starting from the associations daily analysis it was possible to extracted a sequence of procedures that led to the consideration that the strength of censorship was much bigger than the permissiveness of regarding the treatment of recents facts at this proper time. The use of other sources of research, such as historical memories and autobiographies produced outside the society, as well as analysis of the productions of the Institut Historique of Paris, allowed the enlargement of the question and the conclusion that if it wasnt one single rule which could be guide the historian, even in IHGB, out of this association, the diversity would be even bigger and the problem of contemporary history would be included on it.

Prelado que viveu na passagem do século VI para o VII na Hispânia Visigoda, um período de mudanças, onde se buscava a unidade religiosa, política, legal, administrativa e de identidade deste reino. Coube a Isidoro de Sevilha traçar-lhe a doutrina. Assim analisamos as perspectivas deste prelado em relação ao reinado de Recaredo, rei que apareceu diante do III Concílio de Toledo (589) como o autor da conversão de seu povo e defensor dos interesses da única Igreja oficial do reino, bem como de seus sucessores. Contudo, apesar da conversão de Recaredo ter dado um novo caráter à Monarquia esta ainda não conseguiu consolidar totalmente o reino. Isidoro, por meio de suas obras desenvolveu um importante papel na tarefa de fortalecimento da Monarquia. Assim na maior parte de seus escritos não apenas apresentou as preocupações e anseios de um indivíduo isolado, mas os desejos e temores também do restante do corpo que, em sua maioria, compunham a Igreja hispano-visigoda e a instituição monárquica / This dissertation aimed to understands the elaboration of the conception of the Catholic Royalty starting from the bishop's Isidoro of Seville political ideas (560-636). Prelate that lived in the passage of the century VI for VII in Visigothic Hispania, a period of changes, where the religious unit, politics, was looked for legal, administrative and of identity of this kingdom. Isidoro of Seville fit to draw the doctrine. We analyzed the prospects of this prelate in relation to the reign of Recaredo, king that appeared before III Council of Toledo (589) as the author of the conversion of his people and defender of the interests of the only official Church of the kingdom, as well as of their successors. However, in spite of the conversion of Recaredo to have given a new character to the Monarchy this still didn't get to consolidate the kingdom totally. Isidoro, through their works developed an important paper in the task of invigoration of the Monarchy. Like this in most of their writings it didn't just present the concerns and an isolated individual's longings, but the desires and fears also of the remaining of the body that, in majority, composed the hispano-Visigothic Church and the monarchic institution

Considerado um dos monarcas mais poderosos do século XIII, herdou do pai uma política de centralização do poder real fundamentada na consolidação do território da monarquia e na unificação legislativa. Apoiando-se em um corpus documental formado por crônicas, códigos jurídicos e documentos régios do século XIII, esta tese mostra que Alfonso X foi um continuador dessa política de centralização. Sob seu reinado definiram-se as fronteiras do território da Coroa de Castela. Alfonso X completou o projeto de unificação jurídica esboçado por Fernando III ao substituir os vários códigos jurídicos locais, os chamados fueros, por uma legislação régia de caráter centralizador. Ao instituir uma legislação que garantisse a supremacia do poder real, Alfonso X provocou uma reação da nobreza ao seu projeto político. / Alphonse X, the Wise (1221 - 1284) ascended to the Castile throne in 1252, after his father's death, Fernando III (1199 - 1252). Considered one of the most powerful monarchs of the13th century, he inherited from his father a politics of centralization of the real power based on the consolidation of the monarchy territory, and on the legislative unification. Leaning on a documental corpus formed by chronicles, juridical codes and royal documents of the 13th century, this theory shows that Alphonse X was a continuator of that centralization. Under his reign, the borders of the territory of the Crown of Castile were defined. Alphonse X completed the project of juridical unification outlined by Fernando III when substituting the several local juridical codes, the so called fueros, for a royal legislation of centralizing character. When he implemented a legislation that would guarantee the supremacy of the royal power, Alphonse X provoked a reaction from the nobility to his political project.
