Cognitive rationality and indeterminism in the contemporary detective novel, with special reference to the work of Umberto Eco, Carlo Emilio Gadda and Stanislaw LemVan der Linde, G. P. L. (Gerhardus Philippus Leonardus) 06 1900 (has links)
The study examines cognitive rationality as to()l for problemsolving within the context of a
movement from determinism and monolithic universal Reason towards indeterminism and plurality.
It is contended that theories of literature do not provide an adequate conceptual framework, and
therefore, extensive use is made of pluralist fallibilism (Popper, Helmut Spinner) and chaos theory.
The philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche is viewed as a decisive influence in the shift towards plurality
and scepticism. In chapter 2, Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, a novel by Agatha Christie
and Gaston Leroux's Le mystere de Ia chambre jaune are discussed as examples of optimistic
rationalism. Chapter 3 indicates that Eco's II nome della rosa emphasizes the conjectural nature of
truth and objective knowledge, underpinned by a 'soft' rationalism which amounts to monopolistic
pluralism. Chapter 4 analyses the defeat of cognitive rationality by the complex interaction of a
multiplicity of independent causal series. The detectives' relationship with the feminine exemplifies
the interpenetration of rationality and the instinctual, while the mystery of the feminine is a
metaphor for impenetrable complexity. Chapter 5 shows that hypotheses concerning random
complex systems remain inconclusive. However, as the trajectory of a complex system can be
regulated, so reason can be viewed as the underlying regulative pattern (strange attractorl for an
infinite proliferation of hypotheses. Thus, despite .shifting conceptions of rationality and order, all
the detectives in the study accept objective truth as regulative principle and are involved in a
search for objective knowledge / Afrikaans and Theory of Literature / D.Litt. et Phil. (Theory of literature)

The products and services available on the market are often the result of a long story in the entrepreneurship discourse. When practicing entrepreneurship people interact with each other, thus every person involved has its own understanding of what has occurredduring the development process. The aim of this study is to examine and deepen our understanding of the events before an offer is ready for the market; this by letting the involved persons tell their own story. The study examines a case of a startup company which is currently developing its business idea. In the thesis the study and its execution is presented in the form of a story starring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Constructionism and an abductive method are applied. Finally we can see that people identify opportunities based on their unique background which also forms their motive. The motives give us an insight in why and how the interaction between idea and people is played out.

The Fifteen "Mystery" Sonatas of H.I.F. Biber (1644-1704)Vollen, Linda Hunt 08 1900 (has links)
The "Mystery'" sonatas for scordato violin and continuo by H. I. F. Biber (1644-1704) had been largely ignored until 1905, when they were included in the collection of Austrian masterpieces, Denkmäler der Tonkunst der 0sterreich. Even then, they were the cause of some confusion which was later corrected in an addenda to the volume which included this series of sonatas. In the baroque period, scordatura was used by a few of Biber's contemporaries, but the technique is not commonly used today. In order to fully understand and to appreciate the " mystery" sonatas, a knowledge of scordatura is necessary, and this technique is discussed in Chapter II. Because the 17th century violins differed slightly from those used today, and the resources of the instrument had not yet been fully developed, a discussion of these aspects has been included. A comparison of the works of Biber with those of his contemporaries shows him to be an innovator who contributed greatly to the growing technique of the violin.

Investigating moral perversion in post-Independence Shona detective novelsNenduva, Aphios 12 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The study unravels moral perversion in selected post-independence detective Shona novels. Moral perversion is a multi-faceted concept and the study focuses on corruption, sexual harassment, abuse of office, stealing, poaching and illegal manufacturing of intoxicating products as the key definers of moral perversion. Afrocentricity merged with Kawaida philosophy are the lenses used to pass critical judgements on the extent the selected literary practitioners portrayed literature rooted in the African ontological existence on moral perversion. Fictional works used as primary sources are Sajeni Chimedza (1984), Mutikitivha Dumbuzenene (1991), Munzwa mundove (1999) and Dandemutande, (1998). All the novels are set in the post-independence era in Zimbabwe when moral perversion is rife. The study is qualitative in nature and data was gathered using questionnaires and interviews from literary critics, publishers and novelists. Particular attention is paid on the causes of moral perversion, images of people in leadership positions and the implications of character assassination of leaders in relation to the development of purposeful literature. The study contends that moral insanity is an acknowledged problem in the post-independence era and novelists are portraying leaders as the chief culprits manning factionalism and unorthodox ways of acquiring resources at the expense of the majority of citizenry. Guided and informed by Afrocentricity, the study argues that novelists are raising pertinent issues although their views are myopic, simplistic and self-defeating because they are failing to see that the leaders are also victims who are victimizing other victims. Blaming the leadership on moral perversion ignoring the impact of colonialism, and neo-colonialism in shaping African personality creates more harm than good as this exonerates the imperialistic system of exploitation which impinges on African culture and personality. Therefore, the study argues that novelists erroneously blame individuals for the sins of a system. There is need to interrogate both external and internal factors to establish sustainable home-grown problem solving solutions to improve human condition and the development of functional literature in Africa. / African Languages / D. Women writing women : gender and representation in British 'Golden Age' crime fictionHoffman, Megan January 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, I examine representations of women and gender in British ‘Golden Age' crime fiction by writers including Margery Allingham, Christianna Brand, Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L. Sayers, Josephine Tey and Patricia Wentworth. I argue that portrayals of women in these narratives are ambivalent, both advocating a modern, active model of femininity, while also displaying with their resolutions an emphasis on domesticity and on maintaining a heteronormative order, and that this ambivalence provides a means to deal with anxieties about women's place in society. This thesis is divided thematically, beginning with a chapter on historical context which provides an overview of the period's key social tensions. Chapter II explores depictions of women who do not conform to the heteronormative order, such as spinsters, lesbians and ‘fallen' women. Chapter III looks at the ways in which the courtships and marriages of detective couples attempt to negotiate the ideal of companionate marriage and the pressures of a ‘cult of domesticity'. Chapter IV considers the ways in which depictions of women in schools, universities and the workplace are used to explore the tensions between an expanding role in the public sphere and the demand to inhabit traditionally domestic roles. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the image of female victims' and female killers' bodies and the ways in which such depictions can be seen to expose issues of gender, class and identity. Through its examination of a wide variety of texts and writers in the period 1920 to the late 1940s, this thesis investigates the ambivalent nature of modes of femininity depicted in Golden Age crime fiction written by women, and argues that seemingly conservative resolutions are often attempts to provide a ‘modern-yet-safe' solution to the conflicts raised in the texts.

Mystery shopping - srovnání Sephora vs. Douglas / Mystery shopping - Comparison Douglas vs. SephoraHomola, Martin January 2010 (has links)
A fight for customer is nowadays a typical sign of business. There is no doubt about an importance of a customer service. If a company doesn't dispose of quality in this point of view, a dissatisfied customer will use competitor's service in future. There is plenty of sellers, who don't master their roles. However, to measure the quality of service is difficult. One of methods that are used by a modern marketing, is mystery shopping. This instrument serves for an identification of imperfections in the process of service, where occurs a contact between the seller and the customer. It reveals a relief and a complete approach of staff to customers. Based on this there is a possibility to compare results with standards and norms of the company, but also with competitors, the market. Identification of the best and the worst parts is a possibility to improve the performance and the quality of service. A topic of my dissertation is usage of mystery shopping to compare the customer service in perfumeries Douglas and Sephora. The aim of the dissertation is to recommend steps concerning customer service to Douglas and Sephora based on results of mystery shopping. Partial aims are judging aspects as the importance of time of shopping, whether there is a difference between quality of customer service during week and on weekend, how much it's important if the customer is a man or a woman, or if the critical factor is customer's age. I will also try to prove that prices in common stores are noticeably higher than in e-shops.

A celebração da Palavra de Deus à luz do Vaticano II: elementos restaurados, fonte de fé e mistério pascal de Cristo / The celebration of the Word of God in the light of Vatican II: restored elements, source of faith and paschal mystery of ChristMassaro, André Luiz 15 December 2017 (has links)

Previous issue date: 2017-12-15 / The purpose of the present work was to reflect on the celebration of the Word of God restored by the Second Vatican Council, pointing out its various celebratory modalities that can be celebrated by families as a source of supply and growth in the Christian faith, based on knowledge and appreciation of elements rescued with the liturgical reform of Vatican II and that are explicit in the Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium.
In this sense, an attempt was made to make a historical rescue on all the work of the conciliar priests of Vatican II, who took the liturgy of the Church to a movement of return to its biblical and patristic sources. Thus, through applied research, it is noted that the Celebration of the Word of God does not exist to heal the lack of ordained ministers and / or in turn to replace the difficulty of the Celebration of the Eucharist. It has its own peculiar characteristics and can lead the baptized to a deeper degree of evangelization.
From the theological method of seeing, judging and acting, we sought to demonstrate the full range of elements extolling the liturgy of the Word of God celebrated by the communities in chapels, churches, balconies, factories, houses and in the most improvised places imaginable, but which must be celebrated in an active, full and conscious way, achieving fruitful participation in life.
The proposal is provocative and in order to achieve its objectives requires study, knowledge and fidelity to the Sacred Liturgy of the Church, enabling the lay protagonism; a coalition with a temptation of Church-clericalism; leading the laity to live their vocation of salt of the earth and light in the world on the frontiers of mission: a Samaritan and outgoing Church / O presente trabalho teve, como objetivo, refletir sobre a Celebração da Palavra de Deus restaurada pelo Concílio Vaticano II, apontando suas diversas modalidades celebrativas que podem ser celebradas pelas famílias como uma fonte de abastecimento e crescimento na fé cristã, a partir do conhecimento e valorização de elementos resgatados com a reforma litúrgica do Vaticano II e que estão explícitos na Constituição Sacrosanctum Concilium.

Activating Play-Based Escape, Awakening CreativityKeichinger, Sabrina Deanne 16 May 2011 (has links)
Everyone participates in escape. The drive to escape is something we are born with. It is a force that has ties to our curiosity, as well as our profound psychological restlessness, and can even be seen in our displeasure with boredom.
This thesis introduces three forms of escape: pure diversions, games, and play. Focussing on a play-based escape, this thesis argues that this is the most important form of escape, because, through play, we promote our cognitive health and creativity.
This thesis develops three lines of investigation: first an understanding of what play is; second, through understanding the conditions, context, and disposition necessary in order to engage in a play-based escape; and third, a study of play through the review of architectural case studies.
It is through these investigations that this thesis will identify ten key strategies that architecturally accommodate play. These are: nature, complexity, dynamic, loose-parts theory, scale, the primitive, along a path, mystery, risk, and unmonitored feel. In order to develop a method of design which engenders an architectural atmosphere of play-based escape these characteristics are organized into three interconnected themes: a desire to explore the world around us, a desire for a dynamic stimulating environment, and the desire to be active and move our bodies. Finally, an architectural application of the design method concludes this thesis, with hopes to activate a play-based escape capable of awakening our creativity.

La novela policial alternativa en hispanoamérica : detectives perdidos, asesinos ausentes y enigmas sin respuestaTrelles Paz, Diego, 1977- 26 November 2012 (has links)
Despite the great popularity and increased prestige of classic detective fiction, as well as the American hard-boiled novel, since their introduction in the nineteenth century many readers and authors have perceived them as genres incompatible with Latin American realities. The inherent conventions of the whodunit, the presence of a detective whose legitimacy is never in doubt, and its conservative ideology, which presupposed the punishment of criminality and the reestablishment of the status quo, were incongruous in societies in which people had no faith in justice. The genre, then, was regarded as unrealistic for third world countries. In this way, in order to be plausible, the detective novel in Latin America needed a different approach. In broad terms, these pages propose the emergence of a new genre that can be observed in the works of contemporary authors such as Vicente Leñero's Los albañiles (1963), Ricardo Piglia's Nombre falso (1975), Jorge Ibargüengoitia's Las muertas (1977) and, most notably, in Roberto Bolaño's Los detectives salvajes (1998), which I consider the most prominent and complex example of this type. The present study examines how this innovative Spanish American detective fiction incorporates and restates some of the structures and conventions of the hard-boiled novel and shares some features of contemporary Spanish American fiction, while developing its own characteristics in contrast with both detective fiction schools. Due to the necessity of the native writers to adopt, formally and thematically, alternative approaches when creating credible detective stories, I have named this emergent genre: Spanish American alternative detective fiction. / text
