"Vad innehåller lokaljournalistiken?" : En veckas lokaljournalistik på webben i Västerbotten / What’s does the local news contain? - an analysis of a week’s local journalism on the web in Västerbotten, Sweden”

Hanna, Kalla January 2018 (has links)
This study ”What’s does the local news contain? - an analysis of a week’s local journalism on the web in Västerbotten, Sweden” examines the different discourses in the local journalism of newspapers and public service media. The aim is to find what makes the local news with the use of a quantitative content analysis combined with a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA).The study uses a theoretical framework that includes theories surrounding agenda setting, the power of the media, local journalism, news values and web based journalism. For the quantitative content analysis the online text tool Textometrica was used. The analysis found that the local news mainly consisted of news regarding sports and negative news such as crime, accidents and court cases. It also found that the local news mainly focused on a small part of the municipality of Västerbotten in its news coverage, where the biggest city in the region was of the most interest. When other parts were covered it was mostly for sport events or negative news. The qualitative analysis also found that there was a high frequency of updates on the websites and non-local news that made it into the local news due to being sensational. A difference between the newspapers and the public service media was also found where the papers focused more on local debates and public service media wasn’t as tied to earlier theories regarding news values. The study could also state that the content of the local media during the week differed from what is said to be good journalism and also what is said to be the journalistic responsibility that citizens rely on to make democratic decisions.

Representation of investigative journalism on film: : Comparative textual analysis of two Hollywood movies’ approach to journalistic core values

Jauhola, Anna Elina January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation discusses the representation of investigative journalism in two Hollywood films produced between 2009 and 2015. The films in question are Spotlight (2015) and State of Play (2009). Investigative reporting and its practices are being discussed by using academic literature and previous research as the foundation of the study, followed by a discussion about the chosen research method: textual analysis. The textual analysis is conducted by concentrating specifically on three core journalistic practices of objectivity, use of sources and news values, and how these practices are represented in the films. The three core practices are teased out by using specific sequences from the movies in a form of images. The results of the analysis are then contrasted towards the existing literature discussed in the literature review. By using the means of textual analysis, the study found that both films are relying on stereotypes about journalism yet certain ‘reality’ about journalism can be found in these films. The journalists are in many cases shown as outcasts yet heroic figures who conduct thorough investigation and inform the public. In both films, the profession of investigative journalism is legitimized, and the journalists are depicted as the watchdogs of the society. Both movies lay much importance on the individual reporters and the investigation processes: processes that are rare in real newsrooms. This further enhances the mythic and overly positive, romanticized representation on journalism in films. As the study was based on textual analysis only, its nature was qualitative and interpretative. Future studies could include, yet not be limited to, adding another method and through this, to further deepen the research about journalism in films. Areas of research could include films produced in the 21st century and more specifically, films about journalism in the digital era.

”Han har valt ut sina offer. De som varit mörkhyade har attackerats.” : Skolattacken i Trollhättan – En jämförelse mellan Aftonbladet och TTELA / “He chose his victims. Those who have darker skin have been attacked.” : The school attack in Trollhättan – a comparison between Aftonbladet and TTELA

Lindberg, Malin, Robertsson, Alice January 2021 (has links)
On the 22nd October 2015 Anton Lundin Pettersson attacked students with a sword at Kronan elementary school, in the Swedish city of Trollhättan. The school is locally known to have many students with different immigrant backgrounds. When the police arrived at the school they shot the perpetrator and after an investigation the police claimed that the perpetrator had racist motives with the attack. Four persons died in the attack, including the perpetrator. The aim of this study was to compare how a local newspaper and a national newspaper covered and framed the school attack in Trollhättan. Our research questions were: How was the attack framed in the articles? How were the victims and the perpetrator framed in the articles? And are there any differences and/or similarities in the newspaper's coverage of the event? In this study we made a qualitative text analysis to examine the comparison between newspapers TTELA (local) and Aftonbladet (national). The timeframe we analysed for the news coverage was from the day of the attack (October 22nd) and one month forward (November 23rd). Totally 29 articles were examined where 17 was from Aftonbladet and 12 was from TTELA. The results showed that both newspapers framed the attack as something that no one saw coming and they both used the words “attack” or “deed” to describe the incident. The newspapers framed some victims as heroes and others as helpless people. Both newspapers framed the perpetrator as a racist, but only the national newspaper (Aftonbladet) framed him as a “lone wolf”. The results showed that the newspapers reported from different forms of othering.

Os limites do jornalismo : a última batalha do Jornal de Londrina /

Silveira, Fábio Alves January 2020 (has links)
Abstract: The objective of this research is to investigate the news values adopted by Jornal de Londrina to deal with urban issues in the city of Londrina, such as land use and occupation, the environmental issue and its relations with the construction industry and the real estate sector. The clipping used was the last three years of operation of the newspaper, which circulated between July 1989 and December 2015. This clipping allowed the selection of 121 reports, divided into eight themes that are related to this newspaper's agenda. Of these, two themes were chosen to be analyzed in the light of the news values, as they are more conflicting situations and deal with legal deviations and relevance, referring to two of the most important news values that appear since the first academic studies on the subject. journalism. The debate on news values was made based on a discussion proposed by five authors: Gisele Silva, Marcos Paulo da Silva, Pamela Shoemaker, Mauro Wolf and Nelson Traquina. These authors were chosen because their reflections point to a model of operational news values and easy to apply to the daily practice of newsrooms. / Doutor

Hur långt är jag beredd att gå för att min text ska få läsning? : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om svensk sportjournalistik / How far am I willing to go to make sure my text gets readers? : A qualitative interview study about Swedish sports journalism

Hallin Ekesand, Samuel January 2021 (has links)
The title of the study is: How long am I prepared to go for my text to get some readers? A qualitative interview-based study about Swedish sports journalism. The aim of this study is to figure out what underlying factors which affects the journalisms news values and selection on news based on which sports that get editorial space. The paper approaches the subject with a specific viewpoint from the sport floorball, which is the largest indoor-sport in Sweden. Though it’s relative size, the sport seems to have an issue: it does not reach out. It gets a lot less coverage and media attention compared with other similar sports, such as ice hockey for example. The development of the sport has been discussed through the years, and a part of that has been an less flattering image as a hobby, not a sport. A part of the discussion has also circulated around the argument that the sport doesn´t get the media coverage it needs. Some essays have been written on the subjects on journalism and media from the point of news value although very little has been done with a combined view on sports, which is why I argue that there is a gap in the research field which this study will partly fill. This work looks at what the sports media in Sweden are focusing on in terms of coverage and what the sport floorball can do to get more coverage. Since the 2020/21 season, the Swedish newspaper SportExpressen streams every game in the top league for both women and men. The theoretical framework in this study is based on the theory of gate-keeping and the commercialization of the media industry which has been put forward by Stromback and Jonsson. The chosen method of the work is a qualitative interview study which consists of an semi-structured interview with four news editors on four Swedish news papers.  The results of the study shows that the news editors believe that floorball get as much coverage as they deserve. There are several factors that affect contemporary sports journalism. One reason is that today´s journalism is well driven by digital metrics. This development in news values and news selection seems to derive from the technological development in the profession, as well as the commercialization.

Whose Pictures, Whose Reality? Lines of Tradition in the Development of Topics, Negativity, and Power in the Photojournalistic CompetitionWorld Press Photo

Godulla, Alexander, Seibert, Daniel, Planer, Rosanna 17 January 2024 (has links)
Initially founded in 1955 as a platform for Dutch photojournalists to increase international exposure, the World Press Photo competition has grown into the most prestigious contest of photojournalism worldwide, making it an important arena for journalism research. Using qualitative and quantitative content analyses, this study examines all photos shown in the competitions from 1960 to 2020 (N = 11,789) considering the origin of jury members (N = 686), participants (N = 132,800), placements (N = 2347) and the Human Development Index (HDI) of the countries. The topics displayed on the photos, their degree of negativity, and potential power structures in the photos are analysed over time both in terms of continental and HDI-related differences. Significant results show that Africa, Asia, and South America are more frequently depicted by the topic conflict and characterised by negative images than continents with industrialised nations (Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America). Participating European countries have a significantly higher average number of jury members, participants, and placements than participating countries from Africa, Asia, and South America, which seems to account for a dominant Eurocentric view. Implications and critical discussions are summarized in three interim conclusions at the end of this extended paper.

The portrayal of the Mali Conflict in Swedish News Media : A Content Analysis of the Usage of National References

Marin, Anna, Curman, Josefin January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of national references in contemporary Swedish journalism. As a result of this, the study raises the question of the importance of national references throughout the world and provides a deeper understanding of the production of news. Through a qualitative and quantitative content analysis of 23 articles from the Swedish news organizations Dagens Nyheter (DN) and Svenska Dagbladet (SVD), the study examines the material using the agenda-setting theory, the gatekeeping theory, and the theories of news frames and news values. The qualitative approach aims to investigate how national references are used, and the quantitative research investigates to what extent national references are used and which themes are often occurring. The study's main findings show that the usage of national references is identifiable in both SVD and DN. The articles are found to utilize national references linked to Swedish soldiers, Swedish politicians, and the political allies of Sweden to provide cultural links to consumers, thus making the news more accessible and recognizable. National references are regularly implemented by using a narrative that exhibits a unified West where Sweden collaborates with other countries and international organizations such as the European Union and the United Nations. Further, Swedish military involvement in the conflict in Mali is often the subject of the articles examined in the study. The situation of the Swedish soldiers is often put on the agenda, and the Swedish military is generally framed as a responsible military force, protecting democracy and being in a leading position. The involvement of the Swedish government and Swedish politicians is frequently mentioned in the articles, making the Mali issue political, which could impact the 2022 election in Sweden.
