Analysing the Intrinsic and Extrinsic Values of Physical Education and Health

A traditional view has, more or less, infested the subject of Physical Education, which affects the subject´s intrinsic values. The purpose of this knowledge overview is to analyse teachers and pupil’s perception and understanding of PEH in relation to intrinsic and extrinsic values. Intrinsic refers to the certain value of knowing a subject’s core content, on the other hand, extrinsic refers that knowledge in a subject content is valuable for something else. The following questions will aid us in this overview and provide us with as much angles as possible; What is/are teachers’ perception of PEH based on intrinsic and extrinsic values?What are pupils’ perception of PEH based on intrinsic and extrinsic values?What is/are teachers’ understanding of PEH based on intrinsic and extrinsic values?What are pupils’ understanding of PEH based on intrinsic and extrinsic values?This knowledge overview focusses mainly on Sweden but includes some international research. These researches range from the years 2006 - 2019. This knowledge overview is conducted by analysing several systematically selected sources, where searches have been made in different databases.The results show that extrinsic values are highly valued in the subject of PEH even today. Research from when both Lpo94 and Lgr11 were active, showed that a traditional- and extrinsic view is more prevalent than the intrinsic values of PEH. In the discussion different aspects are lifted. Both we and the research suggest, based on the learning outcomes of the syllabus, the importance of making intrinsic values more tangible in PEH lessons. This is in order to produce a consensus within and around the subject.

Decision-Making in Literary Translation: A Descriptive Study of Swahili Literary Translations

This study investigates the notion of “shifts” in Swahili literary translations within a wider context of communication and focuses on the translators’ role and goals, which shape and direct both the process and the product of translation. The study is intended to answer the broad question of why Swahili literary translations appear as refracted as they are hence, it is, an inquiry into the make-up of Swahili literary translations, as they exist in the target culture. Of key importance to this research is the broad view of translation as mediated inter-lingual communication. Based on such a view, this study proceeds on the general assumption that translation is a rewriting of an original text and as such it not only reflects a certain ideology and a poetics but also manipulates literature to function in society in a certain way (Lefevere, 2002, p. xi). The fundamental contention of this thesis is that since translation involves active intervention of translators through transformation rather than identity and similarity, research on the personal goals of translators is inevitable in order to explain ‘departure/shifts’ in the translations produced. Essentially, this research takes a target-oriented approach, which means that it answers questions about Swahili literary translations without reducing them to objects that are only explicable in terms of their source. Instead of viewing translations as bound to their source orientation and expect them to be as close as possible to the source texts, in both form and content, the present study explores the notion that translation is a process that involves decisions and choices of agents towards fulfillment of certain goals (Hermans, 1999, p. 39). On this basis, the study makes use of the descriptive target-oriented framework that contextualizes the activities of translation actors (agents) in functional terms, effectively countering the thinking that a translated text is or should be a mere reproduction of the source text. Consistent with these theoretical explorations, the empirical investigation corroborates the theoretical discussion by utilizing explanatory descriptive methods. The research findings of this investigation offer corroborative evidence that Swahili literary translations are complex artifacts at the intersection of process and skopos.

Exploring Relationships of Meaning, Co-Occurring Diagnoses, and Attitudes About Substances

It is increasingly important to understand the factors associated with individuals struggling with addiction and their quality of life, especially with those struggling with co-occurring diagnoses (CODs). The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which meaning, and CODs of anxiety and depression predict an individual's attitudes and beliefs about addiction among persons receiving treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs). The theoretical foundation used to guide this study was logotherapy, which emphasizes the importance of increasing meaning in life through choices, while also centering on being able to find meaning in all situations. A cross-sectional correlation design was employed, using a sample of patient admission records from a dual diagnosis treatment center in the western United States. The responses on 4 assessments related to meaning, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and attitudes about substances were analyzed using a multiple linear regression. There was no statistically significant relationship between an individual's attitudes and beliefs about addiction as predicted by that individual's meaning and CODs symptoms of anxiety and depression. A significant negative correlation existed between depression and meaning (p < .01), while a significant positive correlation existed between the depression and anxiety (p < .05) as well as the anxiety and attitudes about substances (p < .01). The findings from this study can assist counselor educators in understanding the correlation between SUD, increased depressive symptoms, and low personal meaning.

The Effects of Hourly Rounding on Patient Safety and Satisfaction

The clinical practice problems addressed by the DNP project were the low patient satisfaction scores and the high number of falls on a hospital neurological step-down unit. The purpose of this project was to improve the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems score on one patient satisfaction question and decrease the number of patient falls by implementing hourly rounding, using a script related to patient comfort and toileting needs. The scripted questions were expected to increase the satisfaction of patients and decrease unassisted falls due to increased attention to patient pain and positioning and timely help with toileting and retrieving personal items. The project was guided by Rosswurm and Larrabee's change model and facilitated by the plan, do, study, act model for rapid change. The satisfaction scores on the survey question 'I received help as soon as wanted' and the number of falls were compared before and after hourly rounding with scripting was introduced. During the 3 months of the project, the average monthly number of falls increased from 3 to 3.6 and changes in the patient satisfaction score were within upper and lower control limits indicating normal variation in the process. These findings indicated that barriers to the change on the unit need to be examined further and another short-term, rapid change cycle initiated to meet or exceed the national benchmarks for patient satisfaction and falls incidence. The project may inform quality improvement efforts at other hospitals and assist in social change by increasing scripted communication between nursing staff and patients to ensure that patients' needs (pain, positioning, pottying, and proximity of personal items) are addressed during each hourly rounding encounter.

Spiritual Wellness as a Predictor for Moral Injury in Combat Veterans

Many combat veterans face difficulties coping with their personal lives, relationships, and families when they leave the service and return to civilian life. Most studies examining the effects of combat on veterans focus on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as a collection of related consequences. Interest in the term moral injury of military veterans as a related mental health construct has grown. Researchers have investigated the effects of spiritual wellness of combat veterans. However, there is a paucity of counseling literature on the relationship between spiritual wellness and moral injury when combat veterans return to civilian life. Investigating the relationship between spiritual wellness and moral injury as based in existential theory could offer insights to improve quality of life of veterans, families, and society. This study examined the connection between spiritual wellness and moral injury among combat veterans using a quantitative survey with a cross-sectional, correlational analysis and incorporating demographic variables. Results showed that the relationship of spiritual wellness on moral injury is statistically significant. Participants with low spiritual well-being were likely to have an elevated level of moral injury. Those with strong levels of life meaning and purpose were less likely to experience moral injury. These findings can be used to help combat veterans heal from the wounds of war. Clinical interventions associated with life meaning and purpose could enable successful reintegration of combat veterans into society. Results could be used to identify and test specific treatment options. Outcomes could also be used to explore the relationship of combat veterans to other professions subject to moral injury and further explore the relationship of moral injury to PTSD.

Studiens syfte är att lyfta förskollärares föreställningar om musik som mål och medel, hur de undervisar i musik och vilka förutsättningar de anser är betydelsefulla för att bedriva musikundervisning som ett mål. Studien berör didaktiska tillämpningar av musikundervisning i förskolekontext. Metoden utgår från en kvalitativ ansats och data är insamlad genom intervjuer och observationer för att sedan analyseras utifrån ett utvecklingspedagogiskt perspektiv och Lindströms modell om estetiska lärandeformer. I studien deltar fyra förskollärare från tre olika förskolor med barn i åldrarna 1-5 år. Resultatet visar att förskollärarnas föreställningar om musik i förskolan är starkt förknippade med glädje såväl som ett eget ämnesinnehåll. Det musikdidaktiska innehållet i förskollärarutbildningen framhävs som otillräckligt och bidragande till förskollärarnas avsaknad av trygghet och kompetens i att undervisa musik som mål och medel. Studiens slutsats är att kompetens inom ämnet musik och stöd från kollegor är faktorer som förskollärare betonar som viktiga förutsättningar för att bedriva musikundervisning i förskolan.

Do Public-Good Oriented Courses In Independent Schools Nurture The Development Of 21st Century Skills In High School Students?

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Education is among the industries shifting today to answer evolving global needs and opportunities. Influential organizations and thought leaders are calling for reimagining of teaching and learning. To prepare students for college and professions, an increasing number of K-12 independent schools are beginning to focus on deep learning experiences and building key “21st century skills” and competencies. These schools are also interested in their public purpose both as institutional citizens of their local communities and to connect their students to local and global communities. These connections provide students with an authentic context for application of learning and for community contribution. There is also now an opportunity to coordinate curricular goals with developmental goals related to students’ social-emotional growth and social responsibility. This study used online surveys taken by students and their teachers to explore whether high school courses with public good themes and experiences in independent schools nurture the development of 21st century skills in students. The eight skills studied were: Critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity and innovation, self-direction, global connections, local connections, and the use of technology. The skills were measured through frequency ratings of forty-eight classroom practices. Findings show that both students and teachers believe these courses do nurture each skill – some with greater emphasis. Students reported critical thinking, communication, self-direction and making local connections as the skills most learned in their courses, while teachers reported that students most learned these same skills with the addition of collaboration. Teachers use a number of practices in the classroom to develop 21st century skills and most students found the practices relevant to their course.

THE IMPACT OF WORKERS NOT RETURNING TO THE JOB MARKET: WHERE HAVE THEY GONE

The objective of this study is to understand the paradigm shift that unfolded throughout the “Great Resignation\Reshuffling” (2020-2022) within the minds of individuals post March 2021. To fully understand the Great Resignation, one must look at the year prior to the event. In March of 2020, the world changed as billions of individuals watched as boundaries, academic institutions, government agencies and corporations shut their doors all in the name of containment of the infectious disease known as Coronavirus (COVID-19). As cases increased across the global, organizations had to reassess the human capital cost considering dwindling revenue and executive orders that closed all nonessential businesses. The decision by U.S organizations to furlough and/or lay off workers led to approximately 23 million Americans unemployed and standing in a place of ambiguity. Over the next two (2) years, the government worked in collaboration with organizations to instate policies/protocols to re-open America and return life to the new normal inclusive of working online and in person. However, Americans were slow to return to the workforce that once so flippantly provided them a termination letter. The stagnation in ready and able bodies willing to return to the workforce has led to a labor shortage. Despite several efforts to incentivize individuals to return, the statistics did not reflect the desired outcome and the cause was and is relatively unknown. In light of this unprecedent phenomenon, this study utilized a netnography to explore the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Bullshit Job Theory within the framework of re-engaging in the job market after the pandemic. The findings from study one (1) suggest that a newfound sense of worth, salary, stress steward of care, and stumbling blocks are the leading factors that may prohibit individuals from returning to work. As individuals remained on the work sidelines a spillover effect started to unfold. Those individuals working had to shoulder the work of those who had not yet returned and an uptick in quit rates soon emerged known as the Great Resignation. Consequently, the organizations started to cannibalize the job market creating an environment for individuals to resign and explore new opportunities. To investigate this phenomenon, study two (2) performed a deep dive into the subreddit “r/antiwork:” to explore why individuals were quitting their jobs. The data from study two (2) indicates 20% of the high engaging posts on the subreddit thread of “r/antiwork” can be associated with one (1) of the five (5) categories defined as a Bullshit job. / Business Administration/International Business Administration

BENEATH THE SURFACE IS PURPOSE: A MIXED METHOD EXPLORATION OF PURPOSE-FIT AS A DRIVER OF EMPLOYER ATTRACTION

This dissertation investigates the role of organizational purpose as a driver in attracting employees to employers. The dissertation consists of two related studies both anchored in the literature on employer attraction, defined as the favorable interaction between potential applicants and the images, values, and information about an organization (Coldwell et al., 2008), and perceived fit, defined as the employee’s suitability with the culture and values of the organization (Hinkle, R. K., & Choi, N., 2009). In the first study, semi-structured interviews were performed on 23 prospective job seekers to explore the alignment between personal and organizational purpose in making an employer more attractive. The participants identified the opportunity for professional growth and development, the people with whom one works, and alignment with organizational purpose as key drivers of employer attraction over and above the usual concerns of compensation and job requirements. Interviewees invested in organizational purpose alignment with more emotional intensity; noted that alignment with organizational purpose was sometimes more important than compensation and stability; and suggested that the “pursuit of purpose is privilege” and, as such, influenced by an individual’s economic security. Reconciling these findings with extant theory, a new concept of Purpose-fit is proposed as an additional and important driver of employer attraction. Purpose-fit is defined as the perceived alignment of individual and organizational purpose assessed by job seekers through evaluation of image and reputation, mission and values, social contribution, and meaningful work. The second study utilized a choice-based conjoint survey to investigate the importance and tradeoffs between key drivers of employer attraction, including Purpose-fit, basic salary, opportunities for professional growth and development, and opportunities to work with similar people. The conjoint survey explored the effects of an employee’s generation, individual economic security, and reaction to respondent’s employer response to the social crisis of COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement on the relative importance of Purpose-fit. There were four important findings: 1) Opportunity for professional growth and development was the dominant driver of employer attraction across all demographic segments; 2) Job seekers will trade off some level of salary for Purpose-fit, even if they experience economic insecurity; 3) Contrary to the extant literature, older generations placed more relative importance on Purpose-fit than younger generations; and 4) Prospective job seekers with positive employer experience in response to COVID-19 or Black Lives Matter placed higher relative importance of Purpose-fit, were more willingness to accept less pay, and reported lower levels of active job search. In summary, Purpose-fit emerged as an important driver of employer attraction among prospective job seekers, differentiated by generation, economic security, and positive experience of employers’ response to social crisis, resulting in reported willingness to accept less pay. / Business Administration/Strategic Management
