The choice of the 1930s relates to the context of urbanization and modernization of the city, perceived in the analysis of urban development, electrification and promotion of cultural activities. It is evident the relationship of the city and its inhabitants with conceptions and notions of behavior linked to the ideals of modernity and civility, which carried elements of regulation that served the emergence of a capitalism oriented to consumer relations. The confrontation between these new patterns of social interaction and those old values inherited of a rural way-of-life, is considered in this work through the analysis of the night-time sociabilities present in this popular universe. The night-time, chosen by favoring the dominance of employees on their free time, reveals these and other traces of a popular culture that presents itself effervescent and singular, establishing exchanges not only with Brazil - taking into account Vargas's policy prevailing in the period, to bring together all Brazilian states through popular culture - but also with other countries bordering the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Starting from the statements and testimony contained in police investigations and criminal prosecutions of the period, it becomes possible to visualize the vitality of a popular night that wandered through the streets and filled urban space with their meetings, their conflicts and their loves. In order to take some steps to fill this gap in the history of Pelotas, we propose here to discuss the theme "popular night" so that the city of mansions and charqueadas could be also known for its night owls, who, generation to generation, give life to Pelotas's night until today. / O presente estudo discute a noite pelotense de 1930 a 1939, com ênfase nas sociabilidades noturnas ligadas à cultura popular desse período. A escolha da década de 1930 do século passado refere-se à conjuntura de urbanização e modernização da cidade de Pelotas, percebida na análise do desenvolvimento do espaço urbano, eletrificação e dinamização das atividades culturais. Torna-se evidente a relação da cidade e seus habitantes com concepções e noções de comportamento ligadas aos ideais de modernidade e civilidade, os quais carregavam elementos de normatização que serviam ao surgimento de um capitalismo voltado ao consumo. O confronto entre estes novos padrões de convivência social e os velhos valores herdados de um modo de vida rural, é contemplado neste trabalho por meio da análise das sociabilidades noturnas presentes nesse universo popular. O tempo noturno, escolhido por privilegiar o domínio dos trabalhadores sobre seu tempo, revela esses e outros traços de uma cultura popular que mostra-se efervescente e singular, estabelecendo trocas e intercâmbios não só com o Brasil levando-se em conta a política getulista, vigente no período, de aproximar os estados brasileiros por meio da cultura popular -, mas também com outros países que fazem fronteira com o Rio Grande do Sul e com a região de Pelotas. Partindo das declarações e depoimentos contidos nos inquéritos policiais e processos criminais do período, torna-se possível visualizar a vitalidade de uma noite popular que transitou pelas ruas e recheou o espaço urbano com seus encontros, seus conflitos e seus amores. Com o intuito de dar alguns passos no sentido de preencher esta lacuna na História de Pelotas, propõe-se aqui a discussão do tema noite popular , para que a cidade dos casarões e charqueadas também seja conhecida por seus notívagos, os quais, de geração em geração, dão vida à noite pelotense até os nossos dias.

Autour de l’année 1585 paraissent en France des recueils dialogués cultivant l’hybridité formelle et le mélange des tons : les Contes et discours d’Eutrapel de Noël du Fail, les Matinées et les Apresdisnées de Cholières ainsi que les Serées du libraire-imprimeur poitevin Guillaume Bouchet. Exploitant une des potentialités du Décaméron de Boccace, ils mettent l’accent sur la pratique des « devis », c’est-à-dire sur les conversations nouées par des compagnies conteuses. Ces « contes et discours bigarrez » font alterner les bribes de nouvelles, les anecdotes plaisantes et les railleries avec les matières les plus graves, fiches historiques, apophtegmes édifiants et développements juridiques. En un curieux mélange, l’art de « rencontrer » (de dire des bons mots) s’y mêle à l’érudition la plus ostentatoire. Au carrefour de l’histoire des formes littéraires et de la sociabilité, les notions de « facétie » et de « devis » permettent d’interroger la singularité de ces textes, en termes à la fois poétiques et sociaux. Le genre de la facétie humaniste y est de mieux en mieux assimilé, tandis que le dialogue philosophique cède la place à de souples conversations, qui redéfinissent les rapports des plaisanteries aux savoirs. En décrivant les réactions des interlocuteurs, ces textes mènent aussi une réflexion sur la sociabilité et les normes de la civilité. Alors que le royaume est en proie aux guerres civiles, ces conversations facétieuses esquissent des modèles de coexistence originaux, valorisant la liberté de parole, les conflits ludiques et les ententes paradoxales. À la veille du Grand siècle se décide un tournant important de l’histoire de la conversation, entre urbanité et rusticité, politesse et gauloiserie. / Dialogued works, hybrid in form and presenting a variety of tone, make their appearance around the year 1585, in the Contes et discours d’Eutrapel by Noël du Fail, Cholières’ Matinées and Apresdisnées, and Serées, by Poitou-native printer and bookseller, Guillaume Bouchet. Inspired by a potentiality offered by Boccaccio’s Decameron, the authors place the accent on the practice known as “devis”, or conversations that are started up in a storytelling mode. These “contes et discours bigarrez” alternate snatches of novellas, pleasant anecdotes and teasing mockery with more serious material, including historical notes, edifying apophthegms and legal developments. In a curious mélange, the art of “rencontrer” (being witty) is offset by showy erudition. At the crossroads of the history of literary forms and sociability, the notions of “facétie” and “devis” enlighten the singularity of these texts, in both poetic and social terms. The genre of humanistic witticism is increasingly integrated, while philosophical dialogue gives way to agile conversation, which redefines the relation between joking and learning. In describing the reactions of the persons addressed, these texts also invite research into the sociability and the civility codes of the day. At a time when the kingdom is rife with civil wars, these facetious or witty conversations are original models for coexistence, where freedom of speech, playful clashes and paradoxical agreements play leading roles. Part urbane, part countrified, between courteous and bawdy, an important turning point in the history of conversation is reached here, on the eve of the Grand Siècle.

On the margins of the states : contesting Gypsyness and belonging in the Slovak-Ukrainian-Hungarian borderlands and in selected migration contexts

This thesis investigates the transnational migration of Slovakian Roma from the eastern borderlands of the European Union to Great Britain. Based on more than two years of ethnographic fieldwork in the village of Tarkovce and in several British cities, this study examines concrete pathways through which Roma come to migrate and experience their movement. For Tarkovce Roma, the most recent migration opportunity offers a potential means to carve out a sense of a viable life and of autonomy amidst the oppressive circumstances and asymmetrical relations they experience with non-Roma dominant groups and non-related Roma. I focus on Tarkovce Roma strivings for existential mobility, which condition their physical movement to the place of destination, and on their hopes for upward socio-economic mobility. I argue that migration enables Roma to contest and re-negotiate the hegemonic racial and social categories which historically place them at the bottom of social hierarchies. The thesis explores the unevenly distributed possibilities and complex inequalities that Tarkovce Roma encounter on their journeys towards realising their hopes in migration. I situate these differences within the daily sociability of Tarkovce Roma, intense webs of kinship and friendship ties, and key concepts of ‘soft hearts' and ‘heaviness.' I describe how Roma migrants come to occupy one of the most vulnerable positions in the British labour market and how they simultaneously, and constantly, search for other ways of making ‘big money.' Finally, I address questions of categorisations, in particular the internal differentiations between Roma, as well as the transformation that many Roma migrants encounter in British cities, from initial ‘invisibility' to ‘visibility'. By focusing on one particular neighbourhood in Glasgow, I analyse the shifting forms of ethno-cultural categorisations that mark Roma/Gypsy difference.

Ce travail étudie la relation entre scepticisme et politesse dans l’œuvre de David Hume afin de contribuer à la compréhension philosophique de l’art d’écrire de Hume et de son évolution. Du Traité de la nature humaine (1739-1740) aux œuvres suivantes (les Essais, les deux Enquêtes, les Four Dissertations et les Dialogues sur la religion naturelle), on observe un incontestable changement dans la manière de communiquer la science de l’homme au public du XVIIIe siècle. Inspiré en partie du journalisme philosophique d’Addison et de Steele et destiné à rendre la philosophie abstraite accessible au public de la conversation, l’art d’écrire de Hume témoigne d’une intégration progressive de la culture de la politesse au scepticisme mitigé et à son expression. Mais cela signifie tout sauf un renoncement aux ambitions spéculatives du Traité, que Hume aurait abandonnées pour la recherche d’une gloire mondaine. Au contraire, comme expression de la bonne humeur caractéristique du « vrai sceptique » et comme préparation littéraire de la réception critique de la philosophie au sein de la République des Lettres, l’art d’écrire de Hume cherche à donner à cette science sceptique – et science nouvelle – qu’est la science de l’homme le public dont elle a besoin pour assurer sa fondation. Le scepticisme mitigé apparaît alors comme étant essentiellement un scepticisme policé, c’est-à-dire comme la meilleure manière de faire entrer la « métaphysique » dans la voie sûre de la civilisation. / This study deals with the relationship between scepticism and politeness in the works of David Hume, in order to contribute to the understanding of Hume’s art of writing from a philosophical point of view. From the Treatise of human nature (1739-1740) to the later works (the Essays, the two Enquiries, the Four dissertations and the Dialogues concerning natural religion), one can observe an obvious change in the manner of communicating the science of man to the public of the eighteenth century. Partly inspired by the philosophical journalism of Addison and Steele and designed to make abstract philosophy accessible to the public of conversation, Hume’s art of writing shows a progressive integration of the culture of politeness with scepticism and its expression. But this certainly does not mean that Hume would have left the speculative ambitions of the Treatise for worldly success. On the contrary, as an expression of the good humour which characterizes the « true sceptic » as well as a literary preparation of the critical reception of philosophy in the Republic of Letters, Hume’s art of writing tries to give to the science of man, considered as a sceptical – and new – science, the public that it needs for its foundation. Hence mitigated scepticism appears essentially as a polite scepticism, the best way for « metaphysics » to enter upon the secure path of civilization.

Cette thèse sur travaux rassemble un ensemble d'articles traitant des formes de la participation ordinaire à l'espace public. Elle s'attache à décrire la manière dont les publics ont été amenés à prendre la parole dans les médias traditionnels, les médias alternatifs et sur Internet. A partir d'une approche examinant différents formats d'énonciation (opinion, critique et témoignage), ce travail entend comprendre comment l'espace public s'est élargi à de nouveaux publics et à de nouveaux régimes d'expression avec l'apparition du web au tournant des années 2000. Les travaux rassemblés comparent (1) des études de cas portant sur l'expression des auditeurs dans des programmes radiophoniques traditionnels (Les auditeurs ont la parole (RTL), les indignations pour l'abbé Pierre (France inter), et L'émission de Menie Grégoire (RTL)) ; (2) des analyses du rôle des médias alternatifs et du militantisme altermondialiste dans la critique et l'invention de nouveaux formats d'expression sur Internet ; et (3) des études de cas portant sur les nouveaux dispositifs d'expression ordinaire apparus sur Internet avec les blogs, Wikipédia et les réseaux sociaux du web 2.0. La possibilité offerte à tous de publier sur Internet sans passer par le filtre des médias traditionnels conduit à la fois à une libération des subjectivités et à une intériorisation de plus en plus forte par les individus des contraintes expressives relatives à l'adresse à un public. Cette analyse souligne l'importance de la variation de la taille et de la forme des publics dans les mondes numériques en montrant comment au public abstrait, anonyme et nombreux des médias traditionnel, le web substitue une fabrication dynamique et interactive de la visibilité. En articulant étroitement l'analyse des sociabilités numériques à celle de la publicité des expressions, cette thèse montre comment les exigences et les contraintes de l'espace public sont, de plus en plus, incorporées dans les processus de socialisation des individus dans nos sociétés. / This thesis gathers a series of articles dealing with the ordinary forms of participation in the public space. It attempts to describe the way the public have been led to express itself in traditional media, alternative media and the web. From an approach examining different formats of enunciation (opinion, criticism and testimony), this work intends to understand how public space has expanded to new audiences and new regimes of expression with the appearance of web at the turn of the 2000s. The different researches gathered in this thesis compares (1) case studies on the expression of listeners in traditional radio program (Les auditeurs ont la parole (RTL), Les indignations pour l'abbé Pierre (France Inter) and L'émission de Menie Grégoire (RTL)); (2) analysis of the role of alternative media and the anti-globalization activism in the criticism and the invention of new formats of expression on the Internet; and (3) case studies of new spaces for ordinary expression appeared with the birth of blogs, Wikipedia and social networks of Web 2.0. The opportunity for all to publish on the Internet without going through the filter of traditional media led both to a release of subjectivities and an internalization of expressive constraints by individuals. This analysis also highlights the importance of variation in size and shape of the public in the digital world by showing how to the abstract and anonymous public of traditional media, the web substitutes a dynamic and interactive manufacturing of visibility. In articulating the analysis of digital sociability and the building of public visibility, this thesis shows how the requirements and constraints of the public space are increasingly included in the socialization process of individuals in our societies

Nesta perspectiva, o objetivo deste estudo é investigar a idéia de aventura inserida nas atividades realizadas na natureza, refletindo por que este é um termo tão utilizado na contemporaneidade. Portanto, este estudo constitui-se em uma pesquisa qualitativa, cuja abordagem trabalha com um universo de motivos, aspirações, valores, crenças e atitudes, correspondendo a um espaço mais profundo dos processos, relações e fenômenos, os quais não podem ser reduzidos à operacionalização de variáveis. As fundamentações conceituais sobre a temática abordada foram buscadas, principalmente,junto à Sociologia, Educação Física e Antropologia, áreas estas as quais, conjuntamente, contribuem e sustentam as discussões estabelecidas. Este estudo foi desenvolvido concomitantemente por meio de duas pesquisas complementares: bibliográfica e de campo. Por meio da pesquisa de campo, baseada em dois instrumentos (entrevista semi-estruturada e observação participante) foram investigados: os motivos que fazem as pessoas se deslocarem para ir ao encontro das atividades de aventura na natureza; bem como, seus gostos, comportamentos, valores, etc; as formas de envolvimento dos praticantes com tais práticas e como se dá a interação entre os grupos de praticantes; como se estabelecem as relações das atividades de aventura na natureza com o cotidiano urbano, no trabalho, na família, etc. Todas estas investigações estão atreladas ao interesse principal: como os praticantes percebem a aventura e a natureza. New technologies create new possibilities of leisure, and lead us to rethink about the meanings of proximity, distance, individuality, sociability, mobility, errantry, reality, fiction, enviromnent and adventure. In this perspective, the purpose of this essay is to investigate the idea of adventure found in activities performed in nature, and to reflect why this is a term so used in contemporary life. This research refers to an investigation in the area of leisure studies, which privileges the focus on the "sensitive reason", emphasizing a synergy between reason and sensitiveness, in the sense of making affection and emotion to be used as methodological tools for epistemological reflection and helping in the understanding of the multiple social phenomena. Therefore, this essay is constituted by a qualitative research, which approaches an universe of reasons, aspirations, values, faiths and attitudes, corresponding to a deeper space of processes, relations and phenomena, which cannot be reduced to the operation of variables. The conceptual basis of the theme was found mainly in Sociology, Physical Education and Anthropology; those areas jointly contribute and support the discussions. This study was developed concurrent1y through two complementary researches: bibliographical and field research. Through the field research, which was based in two instruments (semi-structured interview and participant observation), the following was investigated: the reasons why people go to adventure activities in the nature; people's tastes, behaviors, values, etc; the forms of involvement of participants with such practices and how the interaction among the groups of participants occurs; how adventure activities in nature relates to the urban life, to work, family, etc. All those investigations relate to the main interest: how participants realize adventure and nature. Personal networks and locus of control in large urban centers of Argentina / Redes personales y locus de control en centros urbanos de la Argentina

This study analyzes the relationship between locus of control and interpersonal relations structures in Argentina. After a representative sample (n = 1500) of households in seven major urban centers (>200,000 inhabitants), it examines the relationship between the externality of locus of control and different aspects of personal networks of each respondent. The results show that people having more relations experiment lower levels of externality of locus of control. Likewise, lower levels of externality are informed when personal ties outside the neighborhood are available, as well as ties high educational level. In this regard, significant associations are verified between control and personal relations structures. / El presente estudio se propone analizar la relación entre la representación del locus de control y las estructuras de vínculos interpersonales en la Argentina. A partir de una muestra (n=1500) de hogares representativa de siete grandes centros urbanos (>200 mil habitantes) se examina la relación entre la externalidad del locus de control y diferentes aspectos de las redes personales de cada participante. Los resultados muestran que a mayor cantidad de relaciones disponibles se encuentran niveles inferiores de externalidad del locus de control, así como también menores niveles de externalidad al disponerse de lazos interpersonales fuera del barrio y con vínculos de nivel socioeducativo alto. En este sentido, se verifican asociaciones significativas entre representación de control del entorno y estructuras vinculares.

This period is important to the investigation because it was marked by the acting of a group which corresponds to an intellectual fraction of the elites, since their representatives occupied important positions in many cultural organizations of the city, allowing them to publicize their ideals of city e civility in a decisive way for the conduct of the public opinion. This research hypothesis was developed from the association of three dimensions of the urban life: 1- The world view shared by the elite in question, specially with respect to the authority of their moral discourse. 2- Circumstances of the material life in Campinas during the period, which allowed the realization of a life style in accordance with the values held by the elite and, at last, 3- the shape of the city and the public space in which circulated and lived the totality of the population of Campinas, whose project presupposed the particular interests of the studied group / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História

Trata-se de um parque industrial moderno com predomínio de indústrias transnacionais e onde, ao longo da década de 1990, instalou-se o complexo de reestruturação produtiva responsável pela drástica redução de trabalhadores da categoria e por transformações nas relações de trabalho, caracterizadas pela intensificação das atividades laborais e, como desdobramento disto, pela explosão dos casos de doenças relacionadas aos esforços repetitivos e de natureza psíquica. Essas mudanças aconteceram a despeito do papel exercido pelo Sindicato dos Metalúrgicos de Campinas e Região, considerado combativo e que não aderiu aos programas e mecanismos de controle da força de trabalho forjados pelo novo modelo de produção. A postura adotada pelos sindicalistas ao longo desse período contrastou com a dos principais sindicatos filiados à Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT) desde meados da década de 1980, quando a Oposição Sindical Metalúrgica vence as eleições, interrompendo décadas de uma gestão sindical assistencialista e alinhada às políticas empresariais. Com isso, fez-se necessária a compreensão dos limites apresentados pelo sindicalismo campineiro frente ao complexo de reestruturação produtiva. A investigação mostrou que as cisões no seio do movimento sindical "cutista" enfraqueceram as estratégias de enfrentamento do movimento sindical campineiro frente à reestruturação produtiva e às políticas neoliberais. Com isso, o trabalhador metalúrgico campineiro tornou-se vulnerável às inseguranças trazidas pelo ambiente fabril e que se estendem ao espaço fora do trabalho e, consequentemente, ao risco do adoecimento físico e mental / Abstract: This work intents to understand some aspects of metalworkers¿ sociability of Campinas Area after consolidate a complex industrial restructuration. It is a modern industrial park with a predominance of transnational industries and where, throughout the 1990s, settled the complex industrial restructuration responsible for the drastic reduction the number of metalworkers category and changes in labor relations, characterized by intensification of work activities and as a consequence that, by rising of occupation illnesses such as Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) and mental illnesses. These changes happened despite union and worker movements. The Metalworker Union of Campinas Area was considered one of the most important inside "Central Única dos Trabalhadores" (CUT) which stood against the programs and control mechanisms of the workforce forged by the new production model. However, the posture adopted by Campinas Area¿s unionists during this period contrasted with the posture of the main unions associated to CUT. In the 1980s, the Union Opposition won the Union Election interrupting decades of management aligned with the policy of these companies. In light of this, it was necessary to understand the limits of the union movement in Campinas during this period when it was stablished the enterprises¿ innovations. Our investigation showed that politics and ideological divisions between group politics inside CUT weakened the strategies adopted by Campinas¿ union movement against productive restructuration and against political neo-liberalism. Thus, the metalworker of Campinas Area became vulnerable to the uncertainties caused by the industrial environment, affecting their lives outside work because of the risk of physical and mental illnesses / Doutorado / Sociologia / Doutor em Sociologia
