Vävstolen - Tygupcyclingscenter / The Loom - Textile upcycling center

Thoor, Hugo January 2023 (has links)
The textile industry is one of the largest polluters in the world, with a significant environmental impact from both production and waste management. Fabric waste is one of the biggest issues within the textile industry, with millions of tons of fabric discarded each year. These fabric scraps can be utilized to create new products instead of ending up in landfills. An upcycling center for fabric waste could help reduce the waste problem and contribute to a more sustainable textile industry. The purpose of the project is to establish an upcycling center for fabric waste, where new products can be created using the leftover fabrics from the textile industry. The center aims to promote sustainability, reduce waste, and create opportunities for creativity and education. The center will receive fabric waste from the textile industry and sort them based on quality, color, and type. They will then be processed and transformed into new products such as clothing, bags, fabrics, and building materials. The products will be sold online and in an on-site store, with the revenue being used to fund the center's operations. The private program of the center will include office spaces for larger clothing companies, offices for smaller businesses with coworking spaces, as well as study areas for university students. Additionally, there will be facilities for incubator activities. In the public section, there will be spaces for workshops and courses where people can learn about upcycling and create their own products from fabric waste. Various makerspaces will be available for visitors to sew clothes or weave fabrics at a lower cost. Furthermore, there will be exhibition rooms showcasing textile art and sustainable fashion shows. By establishing an upcycling center for fabric waste, we will reduce the amount of waste generated by the textile industry while creating new opportunities for sustainability and creativity. The center will generate income through product sales and contribute to education and awareness regarding the environmental impact of the textile industry. In the long run, this project can help promote a more sustainable textile industry and reduce its environmental footprint.

MOTHER ELIZABETH

Ljungström, Hedvig January 2022 (has links)
Our landfills are growing and constantly expanding with post-consumer waste in the form of cheap fast fashion garments. One way to deal with this problem is to upcycle the discarded material into new things with a higher value. There is one type of material though, that has a tendency to be forgotten about. This material is baby garments. Mother Elizabeth investigates how these discarded garments can be upcycled into womenswear fashion. The title of this work reflects the two areas investigated, baby garments and the Elizabethan era. With an aim of broadening the perspective of what type of discarded material can be upcycled into womenswear fashion, the areas of investigation are combined. Throughout the study, methods for exploring garments from the Elizabethan era were applied in order to create a reference library used as a base when making design decisions. The outcomes presented in this work aim to inspire other designers to broaden their perspective on what type of material can be used when working with upcycling. In addition to stressing the importance of using discarded textiles, this project also showcases how history can be used as a tool to make sure there is a future.

To repair a broken circle.  : - A study in which methods designers can use to prolong material life cycles and minimize waste within furniture production

Haglund, Matilda January 2022 (has links)
This work examines how designers, through using waste material from the furniture industry, can design new furniture for series production. How we, through this can prolong material life cycles and thereby reduce the amount of waste in the furniture industry. In addition, the opportunities and challenges within this method are discussed. The aim is to break conventional design processes and to discover unconventional ones. All in order to actively work towards the goals within Agenda 2030. Through a collaboration with the furniture manufacturer Wigells, the possibilities and challenges of using their waste material for furniture design are investigated. The report consists of an initial research based on the UN's sustainability goals, Agenda 2030. It also includes examples of previous similar projects such as Marie-Louise Hellgren's and Stolab's stool Lilla Snåland. The phenomenon of greenwashing, as well as tools for handling sustainability in a design process are discussed. Next follows a material focused design process. Through practical research, form searching and material experiments, furniture categories, concepts, dimensions, constructions and shapes are determined. Three furniture prototypes are presented and analyzed in the final part of the report. The conclusions show that there are different ways for a designer to work with waste material. Depending on which part of a furniture production the material comes from, the result can be affected in different directions. Both in terms of models for production and sales, form expression and furniture category. The risk of contributing to greenwashing through this method is established, but a conclusion is that it comes down to how the communication and external marketing is handled.

To contribute to a circular society with an upcycling-workshop

Pålsson, Isabell January 2020 (has links)
In the manufacturing process of fiber, textiles and finished garments, it consumes an enormous amount of energy, water and chemicals. In addition, the fashion industry causes greenhouse gas emissions that affect climate change throughout the life cycle of an item of clothing. This study examines whether an upcycling workshop can be a solution to the fashion industry's environmental problems and how an upcycling workshop can be designed to increase consumer involvement in efforts to extend the life of clothing. In the problem discussion of the study, the business and consumer perspective are described as two areas that previous research has examined and further describes consumer involvement as the field this study examines. The research questions that the study will answer are which parts are important in the design of an upcycling workshop and how an upcycling workshop with consumer involvement in focus can be beneficial from a business and consumer perspective. The study's frame of reference describes how an upcycling process is done, what upcycling methods exist and how upcycling is beneficial for a sustainable consumer. With the help of literature and previous research projects in the theoretical model, the design of the first 8 building blocks begins as a foundation for the design of an upcycling workshop. The study has an abduction research approach and has used literature studies and a delphi inspired method approach for the collection of empirical material. The results and analysis present the empirical material that the delphi method has collected through qualitative interview questions. Clarifying structure and content, development of duration, equipment and cost, and simplification of process progression and upcycling methods were knowledge generated by the research. The conclusion of the study is that upcycling workshops can be used as a tool to engage fashion consumers to be a more creative consumer. Based on the results of the study, an additional 6 building blocks were identified and the development of asset, structure, cost, content and duration was necessary to increase the feasibility of an upcycling workshop.

A New Paradigm : A Designer’s Quest for Material Reuse and Upcycling

Svahn, Daniel January 2020 (has links)
In a time of growing consciousness around sustainability and an early paradigm shift when it comes to circular systems for furniture and interiors, as an aspiring designer, I need and must adapt accordingly within my field and creative practice. In this project, I have worked with the immense material waste that is going on, especially focusing on furniture and interiors, within the public and private sectors as well as in office environments, where this is a big issue. Guided by the United Nations Global Goal No 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production, I have experimented with, to me, new ideas for systems that deal with the upcycling and repurposing of “old” and/or discarded pieces of furniture and the material they are made from. To see what I can make of it to prolong the lifecycle and give the material a new purpose, function, and value. In my process I have acted both as an interior architect and a furniture designer but also as a sculptor and craftsman since the predetermined “waste” material I have worked with demanded a reversed design process than what a “normal” one would look like for a commercial project.    The result is a series of new furniture designed and made from waste material, revisioned by me through a mix of art and design, to see how I as a designer of furniture and interiors can develop and find my path in this and to help formulate the new design paradigm and aesthetics for future circular and sustainable furniture and interior solutions that is underway.

Sportkläder och upcycling : en sann matchning? / Sportswear and upcycling : a true match?

Dorf, Vendela, Bergvall, Linnea January 2020 (has links)
The textile industry is one of the world's largest and dirtiest industries we have today. With the enormous amount of water, chemicals and carbon dioxide emissions that are released every day, the fashion industry has a major impact on our environment. Consumption together with an increased desire to buy fast fashion clothes and follow trends that are constantly updated, is a difficult task to achieve. Together, consumers and companies can find approaches and solutions to the environmental deterioration that the textile industry brings. Reusing or recycling garments is nothing new in the market, however, more and more ways of utilizing textile waste are emerging through recycling. Recycling, redesign and remake are some of the most common ways of handling textile waste and creating new clothes after that. When it comes to recycling, the garments is taken apart and broken down at fiber level and then woven or knit new garments. Consumers can thereafter reuse their old clothes that has turned into new ones. Recycling textiles is a demanding process and it is important to have the right fiber in order for the quality of the garment to remain after the recycling is done. The purpose of this study has been to investigate sports companies' approach to the concept of upcycling as well as future plans and areas of improvement when it comes to their sustainability work. In this study, questions about sustainability work will be asked with the aim of obtaining answers about areas of improvement. The report will also describe how companies view upcycling and what they relate to the concept of upcycling. Upcycling means extending the life of a garment without breaking it down at fiber level and increasing its value. During the course of the study, companies in the sports industry based in Sweden were contacted. The work has largely been carried out in Borås. The issues have examined the concept of upcycling, how it can be applied in practice and all interviewed companies' sustainability work. Through the interviews valuable information on upcycling and sustainability was added to the study because not enough facts were found in the litterature. The information has also been taken from literature and scientific articles. The report is written focusing on a sustainability perspective and new solutions when it comes to textile waste. Thus, upcycling is being investigated and whether that process has the potential to grow in the sports industry. Limitations are made to companies that are not based in Sweden. The study will only address basic economic aspects with a focus on product.

Upcycling av teckendisplaymodul : En adapter for styrkretsen Hitachi HD44780

Ristic, Dejan January 2018 (has links)
Upcycling can be described as an activity where outdated or discarded products are used as raw-materials in the construction of a new object, for which an increased quality or value is achieved. Some ideas for upcycling of technologically simple products have prooved successful, in the sense that those ideas have become widespread and practically implemented within a certain target audience. This thesis explores how an idea concerning upcycling of an electric product can be developed into a prototype, with the intent to simplify application of the idea within the target audience of electronic hobbyists. This is achieved through the development of a prototype for an adapter, the purpose of which is to extend the functionality of a character based LCD module with the Hitachi HD44780 control circuit. This allows for using such LCD module for displaying text in additional languages, and (for certain applications) using it as a substitute for a monochromatic graphical LCD module. The conclusion of the study is that the adapter prototype is capable of increasing the number of user defined characters that can be displayed simeltanously by a character LCD module, and that the prototype may be of use for certain types of applications within the intended target audience.

Upcycling inom hemtextil : En undersökning om hur textiliernas livscykel kan förlängas / Upcycling in Home Textiles : An Investigation into Extending the Lifecycle of Textiles

Jacobsson, Louise, Heiman, Ella January 2024 (has links)
Sweden's textile consumption has increased over the years, leading to a greater amount of waste. The textile industry's negative impact on the environment is now discussed as one of the world's greatest environmental threats, necessitating changes that will affect both consumers and companies. Waste management has not been regulated until now, but due to the industry's environmental impact, new waste directives have been proposed to combat climate change. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of incorporating principles of circular economy by using upcycling as a method. The study aims to examine how upcycling can be utilized in home textile companies to extend the lifespan of textiles. It explores the potential, as well as the challenges and opportunities that arise during the implementation of upcycling in a home textile company. The method used in this study is action research, as the authors collaborate with a home textile company to gain a deeper understanding and a more reality-based view of the process. This method is considered most suitable as it opens up new insights and opportunities for the upcoming cycle. The results are based on a practical investigation where products such as duvet covers and towels were reused to create four new product groups. The results are supplemented with established theory and comments from the home textile company. The upcycled products demonstrate that upcycling can be integrated into home textile companies and address the challenges and opportunities that arise. The findings suggest that upcycling within home textiles offers significant potential for innovation and sustainability, opening up further research in this field. This study only examines the design and production perspective of upcycling, excluding economic and consumer perspectives.

[en] TRANSITION TO CIRCULARITY: ASPECTS OF COLLABORATION IN INITIATIVES IN THE TEXTILE AND FASHION SUPPLY CHAIN / [pt] TRANSIÇÃO PARA A CIRCULARIDADE: ASPECTOS DA COLABORAÇÃO EM INICIATIVAS NA CADEIA TÊXTIL E DA MODA

NATHALIA MACHADO DI ARAUJO 15 July 2024 (has links)
[en] This research aims to analyze the role of collaboration in the supply chain in the context of transitioning to a circular economy. The textile and fashion industry was chosen as the focus of this analysis due to its status as one of the world s largest polluters. Various circular practices have been applied to this industry as alternatives to addressing environmental issues. Consequently, the research identified several initiatives related to textile reuse, remanufacturing, optimization, and waste utilization. To understand how actors in the same supply chain collaborate to promote these initiatives, a multiple case study approach was employed, involving 17 semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders in a textile supply chain located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The method utilized was a qualitative study based in an inductive approach, employing Grounded Theory for data analysis. The results identified three important conceptual dimensions in the discussion of collaboration in this chain, namely: (i) circularity implementation, (ii) social aspects, and (iii) governance. The aspects identified in these dimensions indicate that although there are advancements and the initiatives yield positive impacts, they are observed as efforts of specific groups in the chain rather than being integrated across the entire chain. Regarding social aspects, there are contextual issues in the industry and the initiatives themselves that reveal contradictions. Lastly, in terms of governance, there are important aspects regarding the relationships between the involved parties.

A Cinderella Story: How Past Identity Salience Boosts Demand for Repurposed Products

Kamleitner, Bernadette, Thürridl, Carina, Martin, Brett A. S. January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Like Cinderella, many repurposed products involve a biographical transformation, from a tattered past identity (e.g., an old airbag) to a product with a valuable but different new identity (e.g., a backpack made from an airbag). In this article, the authors argue that marketers should help customers infer such product stories by highlighting the products' tattered past identities. Three field experiments and four controlled experiments show that making a product's past identity salient boosts demand across a variety of repurposed products. This is because past identity salience induces narrative thoughts about these products' biographies, which in turn allows customers to feel special. Results also suggest that this strategy of past identity salience needs to be particularly well-crafted for products with easily discernible past identities. These findings highlight a promising new facet of storytelling (i.e., stories that customers self-infer in response to minimal marketer input); create new opportunities for promoting products with a prior life; and deliver detailed guidance for the largely unexplored, growing market for upcycled and recycled products.
