No. of bitstreams: 1 Flávia Maria Marques Nogueira.pdf: 1419458 bytes, checksum: 86b7f604055ffac04db333e6000d4c31 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-05-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Considering all the contemporary scenarios of a dynamic world in which several transformations have occurred over the last decades, we noticed that modern day life rhythms have changed and intensified, and this fact is related to the speed of technological times. Due to these changes and following the temporal acceleration the social institutions have also changed, the subjects, and their life styles. In this contemporary logic, we verify that one of the great transformations that we witnessed in society and the stratospheres of life of the subject is associated to the social dimension of time. There is a different time in our historical moment, there is a time made up of new mediations and, therefore, it is lived in a different way. The subjects live new relations to time, the experience of speed, a result of the capitalist social life, that demands more productivity every time. As well as this, there is also living time of the instantaneousness, of the immediate, of the ephemeral, moderated by the time of the virtual, ultimately the time of new technologies, the time of the internet. So taking into consideration the changes that contemporaneity has inflicted on its subjects, and that it brings a determinate experience of time, we have as a general objective on this study research how young people are establishing their future projects mediated by contemporary time. To ensue that, the theoretical referential method used is of the Psychosocial History, which is based on historical dialectic materialism. An instrument of incomplete phrases was developed, composed of phrases related to future time, to future projects, about work, about adults, and about the technological times for young people. The instrument was applied in 31 young people, students of the third year of medium grade in private schools in the city of Sao Paulo, and students of pre-“vestibular” schools, also private. The analysis enabled seizing that, at this age of uncertainty, young people seek certainty, objectivity, and immediate answers. With that we can say that the fundamental contemporary rule is to try to obtain security in the movement. To try to obtain security in uncertainty and unpredictability, not having a long deadline as a horizon. Following that argument, we could observe that to elaborate long-term projects sound too vague for them. They bring to us the fact that they have goals to be achieved, they do have objectives, but on a discourse that seems empty, undefined, inconsistent, because “getting there” is still a too distant future. The subjects of this research have demonstrated the great pressure that they have suffered over present time, they feel like they have been “swallowed”, by the immediacy of their studies, the intense preparation for the “vestibular”, by the short time constraints they have at their disposal for their choices. Therefore, the more they are prisoners of the present, the less they own their own futures, and that ends up making it harder for them to build their projects. We understand then that at our present juncture immediate achievements are valued in detriment of long-term achievements, because the future is immediate.

An investigation into the nature of physical activity in young people within a Scottish context

Young, Steven David January 2018 (has links)
Researchers have linked physical activity (PA) with positive health outcomes. Unfortunately, PA in young people continues to be reported as a concern with many not achieving the recommended guidelines. Further, participation in childhood and adolescence is positively associated with PA into adulthood, highlighting the importance of PA habits in young people for lifelong participation. Gender, socio- economic status (SES), and motivation have all been shown to be important factors that influence participation, and as such are a focus of this thesis. Mixed methods research was adopted to ‘investigate the nature of PA in young people within a Scottish context' including quantitative (study one) and qualitative (studies two and three) methodologies. The initial motivation for study one emerged through my personal interest in understanding the nature of young people's participation in structured club activities and the role SES, gender and motivation play in a Scottish context. Sport is often used as a proxy for PA and as such, young people's participation is frequently reported on sports club based activities. On reflection, this focus on ‘weekly club activity sessions,' rather than a more broad, valid, and reliable measure of PA, limited the application of the findings. Nevertheless, the findings and reflection on the methods used in study one informed the direction of the thesis moving forward. More specifically, SES was found to be the strongest predictor of club activity participation, with those from higher SES taking part in more club activity sessions than those from lower SES. No significant gender differences in participation were found. While SES was the sole predictor of school club activities, perceived competence and intrinsic motivation were also important predictors of participation in out-of-school club activities. The regression models predicted between 5% and 27% of the variance in club participation, highlighting the multi-factorial nature of the influencers of participation. In order to understand the nature of PA more broadly in young people from lower SES within a Scottish context and to investigate the complexity of participation influencers, a qualitative methodology was used. Study two investigated low SES Scottish youths' PA experiences across key development stages (i.e., childhood, adolescence and newly identified early adulthood, study two). Results suggested that young people from low SES participate in a high variety of unstructured PA throughout their lives, which is under reported in the literature. Participation in structured sport based activities in childhood, particularly those in which a young person forms a sport ‘identity,' influences future adherence, but also engagement and enjoyment of school physical education (PE). For many young people, particularly those from less affluent backgrounds, school PE may be the only opportunity for them to participate in structured PA. While some young people embraced school PE, others perceived PE a threatening, so leading them to avoid or drop out altogether. Findings showed that in addition to previous experience, the nature of the PE climate also influenced participation as young people entered early adulthood. As well as shedding light on the broad nature of young people's PA from low SES backgrounds, the findings from study two highlighted the role that schools (e.g., through PE) have in influencing young people's PA and associated attitudes. Study three aimed to investigate young people's PA, motivational influences, and the role of schools from the perspective of qualified Scottish PE teachers, knowledgeable on policy issues and active in the development of future teachers. The main findings from study three showed that family influences (mostly parents) and SES were key towards the formation of young people's attitudes and behaviours towards PA, particularly in sports. Those young people with parents not showing any interest in PA were more likely to be inactive compared to those youngsters with active parents. Young people from lower SES backgrounds were less likely to participate in sports activities, thus preventing them from gaining the necessary experiences (and competencies) needed to successfully take part in many school PE activities. Also, this study found that secondary school PE is perceived by many pupils as threatening which subsequently led many to avoid PE altogether. Many young people are not achieving the curriculum expected health and well-being benefits through school PE. The results also highlighted the huge challenge and role conflict that is apparent for PE teachers in schools, which is a barrier to effective promotion of PA and positive attitudes in a range of young people. This thesis supports the contention that SES is an important factor in young people's PA. While those from lower SES were shown to participate in less structured sport club activity than those from higher SES, evidence emerged suggesting that young people from lower SES participate in a variety of unstructured PA which is underreported in the literature. The complexities of PA participation were also apparent where previous experience, parents and school PE were found to have important roles, which either facilitated or debilitated motivation, and participation. This thesis also highlighted that there are serious challenges in delivering an effective PE experience to pupils with a wide range of ability and backgrounds. These challenges were exacerbated by the vagueness of policy guidance (e.g., within Scotland's curriculum for excellence), the pressures of certification, and the mostly sport dominated culture of PE. Implications for policy and practice in relation to the motivational climate of PEemerged. Recommendations for future research and practice in this area are discussed.

Recrutamento partidário de jovens no Rio Grande do Sul

Machado, Amanda Santos January 2016 (has links)
This thesis analyses the recruitment of young people by the main parties from Rio Grande do Sul [PP, DEM, PSDB, PMDB, PDT, PCdoB e PT], considering its three moments: (1) affiliation, (2) political training and (3) selection. The study has the objective to confront with empirical data to the spread hypothesis by the Literature that the Brazilian parties are inorganic which allow inferring that they do not promote recruitment, which contemplate its three steps mainly with young people. The analysis proposes a typology of party recruitment to evaluate the manners, modalities and types of affiliation, formation and selection of young people in the group of the selected parties. The used data are primary and secondary, qualitative and quantitative contemplating documental analysis from the party statutes, in-depth interviews with the youth leaders and a survey with sampling by quotas according to the gender, age and political party with young affiliate aged from 16 to 24 years old with temporal cut in 2014 and 2015. The results show that the affiliation steps, formation and selection are understood in an autonomous manner in the statutes while the interview with the leadership and the affiliates’ opinion in general demonstrate a connection among the three steps being recruitment predominant, which contemplates formation and selection to the positions. However, the evidences contest the derivative hypothesis from the specialized literature debate showing that the parties recruit young people who are graduated and they are selected with the possibility of becoming future leaderships.

Social support refers not only to formal activities or organizations, but also to spontaneous or informal forms of support - friendship and solidarity nets available in the community, affective relations that are meaningful in the lives of children and young people. Our discussion is based on a research performed with 382 adolescents and young students from Jean Mermoz Public School (students from 5th to 11th grades, aged 13 to 14). We emphasized the situations of violence derived from family or community spheres faced by these students. In relation to this specific aspect, we observed the participants more frequently look for help from the informal social supports, mostly from their friends, which indicates that the formal ones are not considered to be effective instruments for social assistance. The search for informal social supports shows the relations informally established in the streets (for instance when they look for help from friends, rei atives or neighbors) have more effect and play an important role in which there are values and affections exchange. Thinking the strengthening of these social links is of extreme importance and leads to the weakening of the hegemonic logics focused on the production of subjects as private identities, and to the amplification of an ethics committed to the disassembly of a sociability anchored to fear, impotence, intolerance, discrimination, and reduction of spaces for circulating and confronting mechanisms of social exclusion. It is crucial that we concentrate our attention to building friendship as a system of reciprocity and affective exchanges, as a space for political actions and production of forms of lives that are potent against social anesthesia / Esta disserta??o teve como objetivos mapear as bases de apoio familiares e comunit?rias para adolescentes e jovens estudantes no bairro de Bom Pastor, Zona Oeste de Natal/RN e conhecer de que forma esses recursos s?o usados pelos adolescentes e jovens estudantes desta comunidade.

A hundred seventeen young people answered the questionaries structured on the components of the meaning of work. Semi-structured interviews were also made with parts of the sample about the themes related to the meaning of work on this way the information of the questionaries became complete. The answers of the interviews were studied through the analysis of the thematic contents. The results of such analysis and the answers of the questionaries were registered on the data base SPSS for Windows. The results of the statistic analysis made indicated that: (1) the centrality of work and the articulations among stronger spheres do not present variability according to level, area or course; (2) the course makes more difference values factors and descriptives factors than area and level; (3) the hierarchy of values presents variability according to area and the descriptive hierarchy presents variability according to course; (4) the level makes more difference specific attributes of the meaning of the work than area and course; (5) the standards of the meaning of work do not present variability according to level, area and course, but present variability according to type of the work market evaluation and planning the future work. In summary, the meaning of work present variability according to level, area and course of the young people, when studied in facets, except for the work centrality / O presente estudo objetiva analisar a variabilidade do significado do trabalho entre jovens na transi??o estudante universit?rio-profissional, dividindo esta amostra de sujeitos por grau universit?rio, ?rea de conhecimento e curso de gradua??o.

Ana Karina Brenner 09 June 2011 (has links)
Part of the emerging field of youth studies in Brazil, this thesis explores and analysizes the experience of young political party activists. These activists are changing how we understand political action. They are creating new groups and political demands engendering alternative ways of mobilizing political activism and transforming what occurs in traditional politically engaged civic practices, such as political parties, trade unions, etc. Interestingly however, the parties continue to rally the support of these young people. This research focuses on the experience of the young activists, the paths they took in joining the political parties, their actual experience in the parties, the time invested and how the party experiences relate to other aspects of their lives. The study was developed by adopting the perspective of qualitative research based on individual interviews with university students that revealed, through an initial questionnaire, their engagement in political parties. Interviews were conducted with 21 young people, 10 of which were interviewed a second time about a year after the completion of the first interview. The young people were engaged in five different parties, all left of center: PT, PSOL, PSTU, PCdoB e PDT. The choice of university students was based on the necessity to limit the field of research, given spatial and temporal boundaries. Moreover, most youth political party activism is traditionally engaged in during university years. A range of selection criteria was developed that enabled bringing together a very diverse group drawing from all social backgrounds; young people of the intellectual elite, the middle and lower classes were among the 21 activists interviewed. The young militants fall into different categories of activism Student Movement, grassroots organizations, social organizations, internal workings of the party, etc. They also relate their experiences: friendships, romantic relationships, family, career choices and labor market. The thesis tracks the political engagement of these young activists, changes in their investment and mobility through various aspects of party activism composing a mosaic of experiences that, in some cases, allows an analysis of political engagement from the perspective of an activist career.
