Magical Activism

Calley Jones, Cris 09 March 2012 (has links)
Lack of knowledge about the lived experience of leisure is a result of the distanced, objective way in which it has primarily been studied (Hemingway, 1999), and there is an increased interest in conceptualizing leisure as a dynamic force for social and political change (Shaw, 1994; 2001; Mair, 2002/03; Sharpe, 2008). Constructs such as resistance (Shaw, 2001), critically reflexive leisure (Mair, Sumner & Rotteau, 2008) and pleasure-politics (Sharpe, 2008) illuminate the role and potential of individual and collective leisure in social change. Within a critical constructionist, qualitative research design, this study of witchcamps and magical activism was informed by feminist, queer, and leisure theories. Data were collected through participant-observation at 2 witchcamps, 21 semi-structured intensive interviews, 11 focused interviews, and 19 elicited electronic text submissions. This research reflects the emerging trend within leisure studies of using qualitative approaches and reflexivity to look at our own leisure (Axelsen, 2009; Collinson, 2007; Havitz, 2007; Lashua & Fox 2006; MacKellar, 2009; McCarville, 2007; Parry & Johnson, 2007; Rowe, 2006; Samdahl, 2008). As a member of the witchcamp community under study, the research was carried out in the researcher’s own community ‘backyard’ (Glesne & Peshkin, 1992), and as insider research, it provides a detailed description of alternative culture from the viewpoint of a professional researcher and personal insider. Data analysis followed a constant-comparative method, and employed memo writing, thematic, and focused coding. The study provides insight into the intersection of leisure, ecospirituality, community, and social change. Setting, activities, beliefs, and community intersect to function as a container for personal and social transformation, and provide an ‘antidote’ to alienation and isolation experienced by individuals in the dominant culture. The study provides empirical evidence of the centrality of leisure to community responsibility for broader social, political and environmental concerns, as theorized by Arai and Pedlar (2003). This research furthers the perspective that community is multidimensional, and has the potential to unify marginalized groups (Arai & Pedlar, 2003). The findings of this study also reflect Mair’s (2006) conceptualization of community as one that provides a space for celebration of diversity.

Fritidspedagogens ansvar inför den fria leken

Karlsson, Rosita January 2013 (has links)
As a leisure time pedagogue I find it hard to have an insight into what children are playing, and how they play when it comes to free play. My experience is that in some free play, conflicts arise, which reveal hierarchies and power structures containing violations, whereas other occasions of free play suddenly come to an end as the pedagogue interferes. In this essay I investigate my responsibility as a leisure time pedagogue during children´s free play, based on two differing play situations. I also investigate the play as a phenomenon by looking into previous research on children’s play and development psychology. By reflecting on the two play situations I can further understand how to act in a more supportive way during the children´s free play, and how I should relate to the free play I have in my essay found that the free play does not handle itself and that the leisure time pedagogue´s responsibility in the free play is to be present and observe when children are playing. In that way I can get an insight into the world of the children and I can give my support when the game becomes problematic or I can back away when I notice that I have disturb a free play that works well.

ANA CAROLINA MATTOSO LOPES 10 November 2017 (has links)
[en] The present dissertation has the theme of leisure as a social right, the inequalities in its enjoyment and the elements necessary for the democratization of access to it. The objectives are: i) to study leisure as a social phenomenon, in the different senses that it assumes in society, its concept and its properties; ii) analyze how the right to leisure is configured in the Brazilian legal system since its inclusion in the CRFB / 88 seeking to find the content given to this social right; Iii) to investigate other issues that influence the experience of leisure producing inequalities, how the economic and social problems and the market dynamics act on this experience changing its configuration; iv) analyze, based on the studied, which elements would be essential to modify the reality of inequality, giving real effectiveness to this right. The research is done from a racialized perspective, considering racism as one of the factors that acts on the configuration of leisure and its inequalities. In the first stage, a reflection will be made on the concept of leisure, its aspects and properties based on the material provided by the Leisure Studies, followed by an investigation on the treatment of the right to leisure in the Federal Constitution of 1988, infraconstitutional legislation and Doctrine of constitutional law. Soon after, I will establish a content for the social right to leisure based on concepts worked and a systematic interpretation of the constitution. In the second stage, I deal with leisure in its relationship with capitalism, analyzing the performance of the cultural industry, globalization and the advancement of the entertainment industry and the changes that they cause in leisure, to deal with the inequalities in access to leisure influenced by the dynamics Of large cities, related to urban problems. In the third stage, I deal with the leisure dynamics of the popular classes, approaching the contradiction present in leisure, in which coexist their cooptation by different instruments of domination and the capacity of resistance to it, showing leisure as resistance and the relationship between culture Of masses and popular culture. Finally, I point out other challenges that are posed for the construction of the right to leisure, indispensable to the democratization of access to it.

ABSTRACT The theme of this research is the City Sport and Leisure Program (PELC), which was created in 2003 by the Ministry of Sports and it is being developed in partnership with municipal and state governmental entities, as well as state and federal public education institutions. This social program aims to overcome the lack of public policies that meet the growing needs and demands of the population for recreational sports and leisure, especially those people in situations of social and economic vulnerability, reinforcing the conditions of injustice and exclusion to which they are subjected. Thus, the general objective of this work is to analyze the PELC formative process under the eyes of the formers, in the quest for interpretations about its model, its pedagogical organization and its interface with the work realities of each former. As justification, we point out the great significance of the PELC that provides the right of access to public policies for recreational sports and leisure, serving all the states of the country. For thirteen years, the PELC has worked in the qualification of social agents and managers. In other words, the capillarity of the program justifies the need to study it and to analyze its formation process, understanding that it is essential in its proposition. Based on these data, we have faced the research problem, namely, what are the perceptions of the formers, in relation to the PELC formative process? As a methodology, we have chosen to use literature review as a means of dealing with the construct has already been produced on the subject, reflecting its repercussions on the focus of study. We have also carried out documentary analysis, as a way of studying the PELC, its structure and functioning. To collect the data, we have conducted an online semi structured interview with 05 (five) formers, one from each region of the country, they were selected from a random draw. The data analysis was qualitative, operating a relationship between the theoretical-documentary data and those presented by the formers, allowing us to establish interpretations that dialogue with the research problem, based on the documentary method. As a conclusion, we have identified a positive analysis of the formations and their repercussions, for agents and policies, a full involvement of formers and the capacity for a fuller understanding of the program and the training in its strengths and limits.
