[pt] Este trabalho objetiva investigar a relação entre as identidades que os manifestantes das Jornadas de Junho de 2013, no Rio de Janeiro, reivindicam para si e os episódios de violência policial ocorridos durante os protestos. Tais episódios se iniciaram após o aumento da tarifa de transporte. Com a intensa repressão da polícia, as manifestações ganharam expressiva adesão popular e houve uma diversificação das reivindicações. Compreendemos essas manifestações como parte dos movimentos que se espalharam pelo mundo a partir de 2011, tendo a crise da representatividade como importante motivação para a indignação (Castells, 2013). Este estudo se alinha à Análise de Narrativa (Bastos 2005; Bastos e Biar, 2015) e à metodologia qualitativa interpretativista de pesquisa (Denzin e Lincoln, 2000), com uma dimensão autoetnográfica (Reed-Danahay, 2001). Os dados foram gerados com entrevistas em profundidade com dois manifestantes presentes nas principais atividades de ocupação do espaço público no período. Partindo do modelo laboviano, identificamos as narrativas e os elementos que os manifestantes tornam relevantes nas avaliações que fazem sobre personagens e ações narradas. Concebendo a narrativa como forma de organização da experiência (Bruner, 1973), a análise foi orientada pela visão socioconstrucionista do discurso e das identidades (Moita Lopes, 2003). Na análise, percebemos que os manifestantes constroem suas identidades partindo do sentido que atribuem à violência policial em suas narrativas. Nesse processo, reivindicam identidades que os projetam numa luz favorável. Concebemos essa violência como choque moral (Jasper, 1997) que produziu indignação para além do aumento da tarifa e levou mais indivíduos, inclusive os nossos entrevistados, a participar das manifestações em junho de 2013. / [en] This study aims to investigate the relationship between the identities of the protesters of the Jornadas de Junho in Rio de Janeiro claim for themselves and episodes of police violence that occurred during the protests. Such episodes began after the increase of the transport levy. With the intense repression of the police, the protests have gained significant popular support and the claims became diversified. We understand these protests as part of the movements that have spread across the world since 2011, taking the crisis of representation as an important motivation to indignation (Castells, 2013) This study aligns itself with the Narrative Analysis (Bastos 2005; Bastos and Biar 2015) and interpretative qualitative research methodology (Denzin and Lincoln, 2000), with a autoethnography dimension (Reed-Danahay, 2001). The data were generated from in-depth interviews with two protesters present in the occupation of public spaces in the period. Starting from the labovian model we identified the narratives and the elements that protesters made relevant in their assessments about characters and narrated actions. Conceiving the narrative as a way of organizing the experience (Bruner, 1973), the analysis was guided by social constructionist view of discourse and identities (Moita Lopes, 2003). In the analysis, we noticed that protesters construct their identities starting from the meaning attached by then to the police violence in the narratives. In the process, claim identities that show then in a favorable light. We conceive this violence as moral shock (Jasper, 1997) which produced outrage beyond the tariff increase and took more individuals, including our respondents to participate in the protests of June.

[pt] A presente tese investiga como o saber narrativo tem sido e como pode vir a ser aplicado no design de apresentações gráfico-visuais de estatísticas. De início, fatores histórico-culturais são discutidos criticamente com o intuito de identificar os motivos pelos quais a narrativa veio a ser indicada, por publicações sobre disseminação de estatísticas e design da informação, como uma solução para problemas de compartilhamento de informações. Em seguida, conhecimentos teóricos sobre a narrativa (sua conceituação, elementos constituintes e estruturação formal) são revistos e, então, aplicados tanto no exame de exemplares de artefatos que veiculam informações em meios gráfico-visuais (relatórios de pesquisa, notícias e infográficos, entre outros) quanto no design experimental de uma narrativa verbo-icônica que apresenta estatísticas provenientes dos censos demográficos do Brasil. Como método, seguem-se procedimentos de pesquisa qualitativa, fundamentados na hermenêutica de Paul Ricoeur e em seu conceito de composição da intriga, tido pelo autor como o princípio formal da configuração narrativa. A tese demonstra como problemas de representação influem no trabalho de retratar um coletivo social por meio de estatísticas e oferece apontamentos para equacionar questões de design e narrativa a fim de que o retrato produzido alcance seu efeito próprio ou érgon: uma compreensão confiável de como essa coletividade é. / [en] This thesis investigates how narrative knowledge has been and how it might be applied in the design of graphic presentations of statistics. Initially, historical and cultural factors are critically discussed in order to identify the reasons why narrative came to be indicated, by literature on dissemination of statistics and information design, as a solution to information sharing issues. Next, theoretical knowledge about narrative (its conceptualization, constituent elements and formal structuration) are reviewed and then applied both in the examination of artefacts that graphically display information (research reports, news and infographics, among others) and in the design of an experimental image-text narrative that shows statistics from the Brazilian demographic censuses. As a method, the thesis follows qualitative research procedures based on Paul Ricoeur s hermeneutics and his concept of emplotment, regarded by the author as the formal principle of narrative configuration. The thesis demonstrates how problems of representation influence the job of portraying a social collective through statistics and provides notes to address design and narrative issues so that the produced picture reaches its proper effect or ergon: a reliable understanding of how this collectivity is.

[pt] O foco do presente estudo são as narrativas de (des)esperança de estudantes de um curso pré-vestibular comunitário. Os objetivos consistem em investigar como eles constroem suas narrativas de (des)esperança, as identidades de si e dos outros e os significados que atribuem ao curso e à educação, em um contexto nacional adverso às pautas educacionais. Do ponto de vista teórico, a pesquisa está ancorada na Linguística Aplicada Contemporânea, em sua vertente indisciplinar e crítica, junto aos Estudos da Narrativa e Identidades, incluindo as coletivas. Os conceitos de narrativas, esperança e identidades são mobilizados em consonância com a concepção de linguagem enquanto discurso e em articulação às práticas sociais. A partir da abordagem metodológica qualitativa e interpretativista, são analisadas entrevistas realizadas com cinco jovens e adultos que estudaram em um pré-vestibular comunitário. Há três grandes temas na análise dos dados: desigualdades, desmotivação e desesperança; cultivando o esperançar; pré-vestibular comunitário e significados atribuídos. Percebe-se, nas entrevistas, que a esperança é muito presente nas narrativas. Os participantes da pesquisa apontam como a desigualdade, a falta de oportunidades e o ensino público deficitário contribuem para a desesperança e a desmotivação. As identidades (co)construídas são de resistência e de projeto e incluem a coletividade. O curso pré-vestibular comunitário, para eles, é um elemento propulsor para um futuro promissor e esperançoso, a ponto de alguns desejarem atuar, agora, como voluntários no projeto. A esperança, então, continua. / [en] The focus of the present study is the narratives of hope(lessness) of students from a community pre-university course. The objectives consist of investigating how they construct their narratives of hope(lessness), the identities of themselves and others, and the meanings they attribute to the course and education, in a national context adverse to educational agendas. From a theoretical point of view, the research is anchored in Contemporary Applied Linguistics, in its non-disciplinary and critical aspect, together with Narrative and Identity Studies, including collective ones. The concepts of narratives, hope and identities are mobilized in line with the conception of language as discourse and in conjunction with social practices. Using a qualitative and interpretive methodological approach, interviews carried out with five young people and adults who studied in a community pre-university course are analyzed. There are three major themes in data analysis: inequalities, demotivation, and hopelessness; cultivating hope; community pre-university course and attributed meanings. It is clear in the interviews that hope is very present in the narratives. The research participants point out how inequality, lack of opportunities and deficient public education contribute to hopelessness and demotivation. The (co)constructed identities are of resistance and project and include the collective. The community pre-university course, for them, is a driverfor a promising and hopeful future, to the point that some now wish to act as volunteers in the project. Hope, then, continues.

[pt] Se analisarmos a seção infantil de uma livraria não demoraremos a encontrar ali histórias que se repetem ou se relacionam entre si de maneira incontestável. Uma dessas estruturas típicas é a da personagem diferente que busca aceitação, sendo o Patinho Feio seu representante mais conhecido. O eixo temático da pesquisa está, portanto, nessas diferentes formas visuais que o arquétipo do diferente tem o potencial de inspirar, transformar e adquirir no contexto da literatura para crianças. Considerando a imagem do livro ilustrado como parte indissociável na formação de sentido da narrativa, ela nos servirá de caminho e de guia para analisar as diferentes maneiras como encaramos o tema. Essa personagem diferente, que busca sua identidade nos mais variados contos, reflete em suas imagens visões diversas sobre a questão latente do pertencimento. / [en] Just a glance at the childrens section of a bookstore will reveal a number of stories whose narrative elements are undoubtedly similar or related to one another. It is the case of a character perceived as different by its peers, and seeks approval by the group. The Ugly Duckling is, perhaps, the best-known model of this sort of story. The present research intends to show how this archetypical character has the potential to inspire, transform and acquire a variety of visual forms in childrens literature. Actually, images play an important part in the making of meaning in these plots. They will guide us in the analysis of the numerous ways of approaching the theme. We will examine how the visual representation of character seen as different, and looks for its own place and identity within a group, reflects diverse visions about the theme of belonging.

[pt] Esta tese investiga a configuração verbal, as estruturas narrativas e os tópicos temáticos recorrentes em alguns romances do autor norte-americano Philip K. Dick - The Man in the High Castle, Time Out of Joint e Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?- à luz de teorias literárias contemporâneas. É dada ênfase especial à problematização da subjetividade na elaboração do texto histórico a partir de uma abordagem construtivista dos processos de percepção da realidade. A escolha da obra de Dick se justifica pela crescente importância do escritor para os estudos não só da ficção científica, mas também para a investigação de técnicas narrativas específicas presentes tanto no discurso historiográfico quanto no discurso literário pós-moderno. Nessa perspectiva, a obra de Philip K. Dick ilustra múltiplos aspectos da sociedade contemporânea, dando-se destaque, entre outros, à objetificação da experiência humana e à musealização do presente. / [en] This thesis investigates the verbal configuration, the narrative structures and recurrent themes in some novels written by American author Philip K. Dick - The Man in the High Castle, Time Out of Joint and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - in the light of contemporary narrative theory. Emphasis is given to the analysis of the subjectivity present in the historical text and to the constructivist approach concerning the perception of reality. Dick`s work was chosen due to the growing importance of this author not only for the study of science fiction, but also for the investigation of narrative techniques present in the historiographic discourse and in the postmodern literary discourse. In this perspective, Philip Dick`s work illustrates different aspects of contemporary society, such as the objectification of human experience and the musealization of the present.

[pt] Este estudo investiga a construção identitária do professor coordenador de inglês, com enfoque na avaliação. O arcabouço teórico fundamenta-se no conceito de identidade pelo viés de teorias do socioconstrucionismo (Bhabha, 1994; Bucholtz e Hall, 2003, 2005; Moita Lopes, 2002, 2003) e da Sociologia (Bauman, 2005; Giddens, 1999; Hall, 1992), concebendo a construção de identidades como um processo desenvolvido discursivamente na interação. As interações são analisadas a partir das noções de enquadre (Goffman,1974), esquemas de conhecimento (Tannen e Wallet ([1987] 2002 ), footing (Goffman, [1979] 2002), e face (Goffman, [1967] 2011). As instâncias de avaliação são abordadas na perspectiva da teoria da narrativa segundo Labov e Waletzky (1967) e Labov (1972) e na visão socioconstrucionista da narrativa como prática social (Bastos, 2005; Bruner, 1997; Cortazzi e Jim, 2001; Linde,1993; Mishler, 1999; Moita Lopes, 2003), sendo também consideradas a Teoria Sociocognitiva da Metáfora (Gibbs, 1994) e a Teoria da Avaliatividade (Martin, 2003; White, ([2001] 2012). Esta pesquisa de cunho qualitativo-interpretativo foi conduzida em uma escola da Rede de Ensino Privada do Rio de Janeiro. Além da professora pesquisadora, participaram deste trabalho quatro professores de língua inglesa bem como a professora coordenadora de inglês, a vice-diretora e o diretor da instituição. Os resultados mostram que, durante a interação, os participantes resignificam as suas interpretações a respeito das identidades do professor coordenador de inglês, que é considerado um mediador ou gerenciador de processos, situações e relacionamentos. Os dados revelam que o afeto, julgamentos e apreciações permeiam a construção identitária do professor coordenador, que também é constituída pelas relações de poder e influenciada pela identidade institucional. / [en] This study aims to investigate the identity construction of the Head of the English Department, with a focus on evaluation. The theoretical framework is based on the concept of identity construction according to socio constructionist (Bhabha, 1994; Bucholtz and Hall, 2003, 2005; Moita Lopes, 2002, 2003) and sociological (Bauman, 2005; Giddens, 1999; Hall, 1992) theories that conceive identity building as a process developed in discourse during interaction. For an analysis of the interaction, the notions of frame (Goffman, 1974), knowledge schemas (Tannen and Wallet ([1987] 2002), footing (Goffman, [1979] 2002), and face (Goffman, [1967] 2011) are considered. Evaluation is approached from the following perspectives: the labovian theory of narrative (Labov and Waletzky,1967; Labov,1972), the socio constructionist notion of narrative as social practice (Bastos, 2005; Bruner, 1997; Cortazzi and Jim, 2001; Linde,1993; Mishler, 1999; Moita Lopes, 2003), the Socio Cognitive Theory of Metaphore (Gibbs, 1994) and Appraisal Theory (Martin, 2003; White, ([2001] 2012). This research, which follows a qualitative-interpretative approach, was carried out at a school from the private sector in Rio de Janeiro. Apart from the teacher researcher, four English teachers participated in this work as well as the Head of the English Department and the principal and vice-principal of the institution. Results show that during the interaction participants re-signify their interpretations with respect to the identities of the Head of the English Department, who is regarded as a mediator or manager of processes, situations and relationships. The data reveals that affection, judgment and appreciation permeate the Head of the English Department identity construction, which is also constituted by power relations and influenced by the institutional identity.

[pt] O presente estudo investiga como são construídas identidades de si e do outro nos contextos da escola e da família em narrativas de dois jovens universitários com dislexia, junto à pesquisadora-professora, em entrevistas de pesquisa. As bases teóricas e metodológicas situam-se no campo dos estudos da narrativa e identidade com foco em experiências com a dislexia, envolvendo relações de alteridade, processos de estigmatização e de manipulação de informação, a partir de uma abordagem qualitativa e interpretativista. Os mecanismos norteadores da análise das construções identitárias de si e do outro se constituem na noção de dêixis, de self, de polifonia e de discurso relatado. Os resultados da análise das narrativas construídas pelos jovens universitários com dislexia apontam não só relações harmônicas e desarmônicas no ambiente escolar, mas também conflitos e entendimentos no contexto familiar, com performances elaboradas e emergência de estigmas. As narrativas destacam também inteligibilidades sobre o distúrbio de aprendizagem, sobre as necessidades pessoais e possibilidades de superação através de uma postura reflexiva, engajada e, por vezes, emotiva. A pesquisa busca contribuir com e para estudos sobre a relação existente entre dislexia, família e escola, ressaltando, do ponto de vista teórico e metodológico, a importância da narrativa em entrevista de pesquisa como forma de propiciar reflexão, ação e mudança. / [en] This study investigates how self and other identities are construed in school and family contexts in the narratives of two dyslexic undergraduate students during research interviews granted to the professor-researcher. The theoretical and methodological frameworks belong to the fields of narrative and identity, involving otherness, processes of stigmatization and information manipulation, from a qualitative and interpretativist approach. The procedures that orient the analysis of the construction of self and other are based on constructs such as deixis, self, polyphony and reported discourse. The results of the analysis of the narratives constructed by dyslexic undergraduate students point to not only harmonious and disharmonious relationships within the university environment, but also to conflicts and understandings in the family context, with stigma performances and display. The narratives also highlight intelligibilities on learning disorders, personal needs, and possible ways of overcoming challenges through a reflective, committed and, sometimes, emotional attitude. The purpose of this research is to enrich the studies concerning the relationship among dyslexia, family and school, highlighting the importance of narrative in the research interview as a way of raising reflection, action, changes, from a theoretical and methodological point of view.

[pt] O presente estudo analisa os aspectos comunicativos da visualidade de personagens de curta-metragens de animação contemporâneos brasileiros, empregando recursos oferecidos pela Semiologia. O cinema de animação é uma arte que tomou contornos na virada do século XX. Junto à indústria cultural, consolidou inúmeras personagens na memória de espectadores em todo o mundo. Contudo, os altos custos de produção das obras animadas obrigam muitos artistas a realizarem seus filmes independentes no formato de curtas metragens. Devido à brevidade dos filmes, esses criadores empregam repetidamente tipos e caricaturas como personagens principais, apresentando-os sob a forma de signos de fácil reconhecimento pela maioria dos espectadores. Esta pesquisa parte da hipótese de que a visualidade das personagens de obras cinematográficas de animação breves é um sistema projetado (intencionalmente ou não) para transmitir ao espectador mensagens de compreensão praticamente imediata a respeito da narrativa apresentada e dos conceitos personificados pelas personagens no curto intervalo de tempo em que elas estão em cena. Com base no levantamento de sessenta principais personagens apresentadas nos filmes brasileiros premiados no festival Anima Mundi em suas doze primeiras edições (1993-2004), esta dissertação investigou os estereótipos existentes nas produções recentes do cinema de animação brasileiro. Em seguida, buscou delinear maneiras com que os elementos visuais que os constituem atuam no processo de significação das personagens animadas, articulando-se enquanto uma linguagem visual específica. Para realizar tal investigação, os procedimentos metodológicos adotados tomaram por fundamentos os estudos de Semiologia de Roland Barthes e o conceito de atributos das personagens desenvolvido por Vladimir Propp. / [en] This paper analyses the communicative aspects of the look of contemporary Brazilian animation short movie´s characters, using resources from Semiology. Animation cinema became an art at the beginning of the 20th century. With the cultural industry, it has cemented lots of characters in spectator´s memories around the world. However, the high expenses of animated movies´ production force many artists to produce their authorial animations as short movies. Due to the brevity of these movies, their creators repeatedly use types and caricatures as main characters, presented morphologically as signs that can easily be recognized by most of the audiences. This research considers the hypothesis that the look of characters from animated short movies is a system designed (intentionally or not) to communicate to the spectator messages of prompt comprehension concerned to the narrative shown and to the concepts personified by the characters in the short period of time in which they are acting. Based on the survey of sixty main characters from Brazilian awarded movies at the twelve first editions of Anima Mundi festival (1993- 2004), this dissertation investigated the existing stereotypes in recent Brazilian animation short movies. Then, it tried to outline ways in which the visual elements that constitute these stereotypes act in the signifying process of the animated characters, working together as a specific visual language. In order to carry out such investigation, the adopted methodological procedures were based on Roland Barthes´ Semiology and Vladimir Propp´s concept of characters´ attributes.

[pt] Nesta pesquisa o autor analisa a construção de narrativas de conversão religiosa em situação de entrevista, tendo-se em vista a perspectiva do presente e o processo de mudança envolvido. Tais narrativas são testemunhos da passagem de uma condição de existência ruim para uma melhor, nos quais o contraste entre o presente e o passado se faz especialmente visível. Em relação ao processo de mudança, os narradores indicam compreender que a conversão se dá num momento inesperado de iluminação. A análise das narrativas, no entanto, evidenciam que essas mudanças ocorrem dentro daquilo que o autor chama de rede de mudança: a construção discursiva de uma ampla rede de relações sociais que possibilita a (re)construção identitária. O autor propõe, ainda, que a construção discursiva da conversão propriamente, seja examinada através da noção de fluxo de mudança. Esta noção aponta para a compreensão de que as transformações na identidade social, não podem ser localizadas em um ponto específico. Embora o autor trabalhe com a análise de narrativas de conversão religiosa, ele argumenta que tais noções podem ser aplicadas no estudo de narrativas que contenham outros tipos de conversão, já que uma das características centrais de diferentes tipos de tais narrativas, é a ênfase na transformação identitária. / [en] In this research the author investigates the construction of narratives of religious conversion through the use of interviews. These narratives are testimonials of the passage from a bad life condition to a better one, in which the contrast between the present and the past is especially visible. In relation to the process of change, the narrators indicate that they understand the conversion as happening in an unexpected moment of illumination. The narrative analysis points out that those changes occur in what the author refers to as a web of change: the discursive construction of a broad web of social relations that gives rise to the possibility of identity (re)construction. The author also proposes to examine the discursive production of the conversion through the notion of stream of change. This notion indicates that the transformation of the social identity can´t be located in a specific point. Although the author has worked with narratives of religious conversion, he proposes that these notions can be used in the study of narratives concerned with other types of conversion, since one of the central characteristics of such narratives is the emphasis upon the transformation of identity.

[pt] A presente tese busca uma reflexão acerca da realização do cinema documentário, centrado na análise de filmes. A metodologia adotada para abordar este tema é focada na questão da autoria, a autoridade do diretor. Observa-se que o analista é essencialmente um espectador diante do filme projetado, trabalhando com ferramentas teóricas associadas à sua memória (experiência) e sensibilidade. Busca-se aqui a adequação da análise às referências teóricas que auxiliam a leitura e interpretação do texto fílmico. Parte-se do princípio de que a criação do personagem está no centro do processo de realização do cinema documentário, onde a autoridade do diretor aparece na concepção dada ao personagem, estabelecendo as conexões entre a estrutura da narrativa e o dispositivo de filmagem. Os personagens assim existem nas narrativas não ficcionais. No caso do filme documentário o personagem tem uma configuração específica, uma dupla camada, sendo ao mesmo tempo ator social e personagem criado, de modo adequado à narrativa. / [en] The thesis project seeks a reflection on the process of documentary filmmaking, focusing on the issue of the creation of the character. The methodol-ogy adopted to address this theme is the case study, focusing on the critical reading of the filmic text. I understand that the analyst is essentially a spectator before the projected film. I know that the analyst has other objectives than the spectator and a specialized theoretical repertoire. The analyst works with theo-retical tools associated with his or her memory (experience) and sensibility. As a methodology of this study, I seek an adaptation with my objectives in the incor-poration of theoretical references that help in the reading and interpretation of the filmic text of a given group of cases. As an initial premise, I place the creation of the character at the center of the documentary filmmaking process. It is through this central core, the conception given to the character, that the authority of the director establishes the connections between the structure of the narrative and the filming device. Characters exist in the fictional narratives as well as in non-fictional narratives. In the case of the documentary, the character has a specific configuration, a double layer, social actor and, at the same time, a character creat-ed in a proper manner for the narrative.
