A study of listening behavior and the effectiveness of aural modeling with undergraduate level singers

The efficacy of aural modeling in music education at the primary and secondary levels is well documented, and anecdotal evidence among university studio voice teachers abounds. However, this topic has not previously been explored with undergraduate level singers using acoustic analysis of the singing voice. This investigation utilized a survey on listening behaviors to examine undergraduate voice students’ use of recorded aural models. In addition, an empirical study measured the effect of repeated exposure to recorded aural models on participants’ vocal production. Research was conducted at Southwestern University, a private liberal arts institution in Georgetown, Texas. Study participants were divided into two groups. The control group performed a newly-composed melody after a recorded aural model of the melody was played a single time. The experimental group completed 10-minute listening assignments once a day for a five-day period before performing the same melody. Data between the non-listening and listening groups was compared. Using a second newly composed melody, the control group then completed a five-day listening assignment and performed the second melody. Pre- and post-listening data from this group of subjects was compared. Listening assignments were adapted from a speech pathology remediation technique known as auditory bombardment. They involved listening to multiple repetitions of the recorded aural model without attempting to practice singing the melody. The study measured four acoustic parameters: musical accuracy (pitch and rhythm), vowel/consonant articulation, use of vibrato, and ratio of power between overtones above and below 2 kHz. The listening behavior survey revealed that most students use recorded aural models in their practice time. However, results indicated that students would benefit from professional quality aural models and specific information about appropriate time parameters for listening activities. Results of the empirical study revealed a statistically significant 20-30% improvement in vocal production in both the experimental listening group and the control group post-listening. These data demonstrate that focused periods of listening to an aural model are effective in improving vocal production, even within a short period of time. The results of this study support the inclusion of aural modeling in the applied voice studio. / text

Cette thèse s'intéresse au développement de lois de commande basées sur la perception auditive. Dans le domaine de l'audition robotique, le contrôle du robot à partir d'informations auditives est généralement basé sur des approches de localisation de source sonore. Cependant, la localisation de source en conditions réelles est un tâche complexe à résoudre. En environnement intérieur, les perturbations causées par le bruit, la réverbération ou même la structure du robot peuvent altérer le processus de localisation. Cette tâche de localisation devient encore plus complexe si la source et/ou le robot sont en mouvement. Aujourd'hui, en se restreignant aux systèmes binauraux, la localisation sonore en environnement réel n'est pas encore réalisable de manière robuste. A l'opposé, nous développons dans cette thèse une commande référencée capteurs, l'asservissement sonore, qui ne nécessite pas de localiser la source. Le mouvement du robot est directement reliée à la perception auditive: une tâche de positionnement est réalisée par une boucle de commande, où le mouvement du robot est régi par la dynamique d'indices sonores de bas niveau. Les résultats expérimentaux dans différentes conditions acoustiques et sur différentes plates-formes robotiques confirment la pertinence de cette approche en condition réelle. / This thesis is concerned about the development of a control framework based on auditory perception. In general, in robot audition, the motion control of a robot using hearing sense is based on sound source localization approaches. However, sound source localization under realistic conditions is a significant challenge to solve. In indoor environment perturbations caused by noise, reverberation or even the structure of the robot may alter the localization process. When considering dynamic scenes where the robot and/or the sound source might move, the degree of complexity of source localization raises to a higher level. As a result, sound source localization considering binaural setup is not achievable yet in real-world environments. By contrast, we develop in this thesis a sensor-based control approach, aural servo, that does not require to localize the source. The motion of the robot is straightly connected to the auditory perception: a positioning task is performed through a feedback loop where the motion of the robot is governed by the dynamic of low-level auditory features. Experimental results in various acoustic conditions and robotic platforms confirm the relevance of this approach for real-world environments.

“Do you want to take a short survey?” : Evaluating and improving the UX and VUI of a survey skill in the social robot Furhat: a qualitative case study

The purpose of this qualitative case study is to evaluate an early stage survey skill developed for the social robot Furhat, and look into how the user experience (UX) and voice user interface (VUI) of that skill can be improved. Several qualitative methods have been used: expert evaluations using heuristics for human-robot interaction (HRI), user evaluations including observations and interviews, as well as a quantitative questionnaire (RoSAS – Robot Social Attribution Scale). The empirical findings have been classified into the USUS Evaluation Framework for Human-Robot Interaction. The user evaluations were performed in two modes, one group of informants talked and interacted with Furhat with the support of a graphical user interface (GUI), and the other group without the GUI. A positive user experience was identified in both modes, showing that the informants found interacting with Furhat a fun, engaging and interesting experience. The mode with the supportive GUI could be suitable in noisy environments, and for longer surveys with many response alternatives to choose from, whereas the other mode could work better for less noisy environments and for shorter surveys. General improvements that can contribute to a better user experience in both modes were found; such as having the robot adopt a more human-like character when it comes to the dialogue and the facial expressions and movements, along with addressing a number of technical and usability issues. / Syftet med den här kvalitativa fallstudien är att utvärdera en enkätskill för den sociala roboten Furhat. Förutom utvärderingen av denna skill, som är i ett tidigt skede av utvecklingen, är syftet även att undersöka hur användarupplevelsen (UX) och röstgränssnittet (VUI) kan förbättras. Olika kvalitativa metoder har använts: expertutvärderingar med heuristik för MRI (människa-robot-interaktion), användarutvärderingar bestående av observationer och intervjuer, samt ett kvantitativt frågeformulär (RoSAS – Robot Social Attribution Scale). Resultaten från dessa har placerats in i ramverket USUS Evaluation Framework for Human- Robot Interaction. Användarutvärderingarna utfördes i två olika grupper: en grupp pratade och interagerade med Furhat med stöd av ett grafiskt användargränssnitt (GUI), den andra hade inget GUI. En positiv användarupplevelse konstaterades i båda grupperna: informanterna tyckte att det var roligt, engagerande och intressant att interagera med Furhat. Att ha ett GUI som stöd kan passa bättre för bullriga miljöer och för längre enkäter med många svarsalternativ att välja bland, medan ett GUI inte behövs för lugnare miljöer och kortare enkäter. Generella förbättringar som kan bidra till att höja användarupplevelsen hittades i båda grupperna; till exempel att roboten bör agera mer människolikt när det kommer till dialogen och ansiktsuttryck och rörelser, samt att åtgärda ett antal tekniska problem och användbarhetsproblem.

A Descriptive Analysis of Political Campaign Advertising of the 1972 Presidential Campaign

The purpose of this research was to determine the aural and visual issues present in televised political campaign advertising of the 1972 Presidential election year. Content analysis was the method employed to determine these issues. The campaign commercials of George McGovern and Richard Nixon were the subject of the analysis. The issues coded were Social Welfare, Natural Resources, Labor, Management, Civil Rights, Economy, Foreign Affairs, Vietnam, Government, Public Order, Defense, Republicans, and Democrats. The results show that the campaigns used issues appearing in network news coverage, the percentage of time each campaign spent on the issues, and that the aural content was supported by the visual images in the commercials.

A Comparison of Aural and Visual Instructional Methodologies Designed to Improve the Intonation Accuracy of Seventh Grade Violin and Viola Instrumentalists.

The purpose of the study was to compare two instructional methodologies designed to improve the intonation accuracy of seventh grade violin and viola instrumentalists. The collection of data was in regard to (1) instructional methodology: aural and aural/visual, (2) performance tasks: A, B, and C; (3) individual pitches (seven from each of the music tasks), and (4) differences between instrument groups: violin and viola. Sixty-eight seventh grade string students from three string classes of two middle schools were randomly assigned to two experimental groups: (a) aural and (b) aural/visual. The instructional period was implemented daily in ten-minute sessions during twenty days by the orchestra instructors of each school. A pretest-posttest format was used to determine if there were any changes in the subjects' intonation accuracy from prior to after the instructional phase was implemented, and if these changes could be attributed to any of the methodologies. The testing material used on both testing sessions included three performance tasks composed of seven notes each. Subjects were recorded on both testing occasions. The data were the scores of absolute pitch deviation, measured in cents from equal temperament, from the pre- and postest; these were treated with analysis of variance. The ANOVA on the posttest scores indicated a non-significant difference between the instructional methodologies in their effectiveness to improve the subjects' ability to play in tune.

Denmark has a long tradition of teaching aural skills i.e. ear training and to educate ear training teachers. Books from Danish authors are still extensively being used within the Nordic countries. The function analysis system was introduced the same year in Denmark and Sweden, but Denmark has developed more terminology than its Swedish counterpart. The purpose of this study was to research how music majors are expressing themselves about newly introduced function analysis terminology and how they experience the use for the terminology in their profession as musicians. The study was made through a survey and a semi structured interview with six participants and the data was analysed according to the social cultural theory. The participants expressed themselves mainly positive about the new terminology and said it gave them a more nuanced picture of the harmony. They also found the new terminology useful for their profession as musicians. The results suggest that music majors would be interested in having a more comprehensive system as they use in Denmark and that teachers in aural training should consider incorporating this new terminology in their teaching.

No / This paper introduces a comparative multi-group study carried out to investigate the use of multimodal interaction metaphors (visual, oral, and aural) for improving learnability (or usability from first time use) of interface-design environments. An initial survey was used for taking views about the effectiveness and satisfaction of employing speech and speech-recognition for solving some of the common usability problems. Then, the investigation was done empirically by testing the usability parameters: efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction of three design-toolkits (TVOID, OFVOID, and MMID) built especially for the study. TVOID and OFVOID interacted with the user visually only using typical and time-saving interaction metaphors. The third environment MMID added another modality through vocal and aural interaction. The results showed that the use of vocal commands and the mouse concurrently for completing tasks from first time use was more efficient and more effective than the use of visual-only interaction metaphors.

Syftet med studien var att utifrån specifika frågeställningar systematiskt granska vetenskapliga studier av audiologisk grupprehabilitering. I studien undersöktes själva definitionen av audiologisk grupprehabilitering, hur olika variabler påverkar resultatet, hur utvärderingen bör ske samt hur den förhåller sig till de uppställda målen.     Den metod som tillämpats är litteraturstudie. För litteratursökningen till denna studie användes databaserna PubMed och Cinahl. Vissa artiklar söktes även från vetenskapliga studiers referenslistor samt tips från handledare.       Resultaten från de olika studierna visar att nytta med rehabilitering varierar då många aspekter spelar in och påverkar utgången av rehabiliteringsinsatsen. Rehabiliteringen bör ses som en patientcentrerad problemlösande process för att nå alla individers önskemål. När patienten själv är mer aktiv i utvärderingen ökar möjligheten att uppnå målen gällande grupprehabilitering. Hänsyn måste tas till varje enskild individs sociala bakgrund för att skapa ett audiologiskt rehabiliteringsprogram som möter deras krav vid lyssnande och kommunikation. Individens livsstil, kommunikationsvanor, krav och egenheter interagerar med fysiska begrepp såsom graden och formen på hörselnedsättningen.    Audiologisk grupprehabilitering är en åtgärd för att förbättra eller lindra problem vid hörselnedsättning och de olika studierna visar på varierande resultat. Grupprehabiliteringens mål skall möta patientens behov. För att nå dit behövs utvärderingsmetoder som är personcentrerade och problemlösande. Användandet av öppna frågeformulär är ett sätt att nå det kriteriet. / The purpose with this study was to systematically examine scientific studies of audiologic group rehabilitation. The definition of audiological rehabilitation was explored, different variables that influence the result and how the outcome measures should be done and its relationship with the goals of audiologic rehabilitation.    The method used was a literature study. Pubmed and Cinahl were used for the search of literature. Some articles were searched from scientific studies reference lists and also advice from the supervisor.   The result from the different studies shows that the effect of rehabilitation varies as there are many aspects that have an affect on the outcome measure. Rehabilitation should be seen as a patient centered problem solving process in order to reach the goals of all the individuals. When the patient is more active in the outcome measure procedure the goals also comply with the group rehabilitation. Consideration must be taken to social background of each and every individual in order to create an audiological rehabilitation program that meets their hearing and communication requirements.  The lifestyle, communication habits and singularity of the individual interact with physical conceptions as well as the grade and shape of the hearing impairment.   Audiological group rehabilitation is a mean to improve or relieve problems due to hearing impairment and the different studies show that the result varies. The goals of group rehabilitation should meet the need of the patient. In doing so there is a need of outcome measures that are person centered and problem solving.
