The shock of the emergence of e-books upon publishers, relevent industry analyses, and investment implications

Sie, Ling Chun Unknown Date (has links)
The emergence of e-books changes the reading habit, and the paper-book is not the only one medium of reading anymore. The supply chain of e-books comprises diversified industries, including authors, publishers, DRM providers, online retailers who operate digital bookstores and manage accounts of customers, telecommunications, technology-side players. When technology advances, the new supply chain creates new co-competition model, the business models of players begins to innovate. Compared to paper-book market in which the publishers have stronger bargaining power, in new co-competition models, the online retailers have a huge customer base and therefore have stronger bargaining power over publishers. Furthermore, there are more and more authors who skip publishers and sell the digital right to online retailers directly. That is, the content resources controlled by publishers reduce, and the bargaining power of publishers deteriorates. In the future, producing colorful e-readers will not be a difficulty anymore, but the technology-side players will have difficulty in establishing entrance barrier. However, some participants play various roles across the supply chain, such as Amazon and Apple. Both of two companies play the roles of online retailers and technology-side players, and have double sales resources from plate form and hardware. Beside, both of these companies have large customer base, and it is the critical competitive advantage of Amazon and Apple. Especially, Amazon supports some hardware tools like iPad, iPhone, and Blackberry. As long as the customers download the application programs, the customers can purchase e-books on Amazon.com. From the aspects of potential of growing bargaining power and future discounted cashflows, Amazon and Apple would be better choices for long-term investors.

Research on user acceptance of electronic books on smartphones

Duan, Po Yu Unknown Date (has links)
Books are the vehicle for social civilization and the ladder of human progress. Due to the rapid development of computers and the Internet, electronic books (ebooks) have triggered a new round of the book revolution. With the emergence of smartphones, using mobile phones to read ebooks has become convenient, flexible, and a way to make full use of scattered bits of time. Therefore, the use of smartphones for such purposes has been pursued by young people. However, ebooks present various problems of their own, such as incompatibility with individual reading habits and the immaturity of the industrial chain. Thus, the focus of this study was to survey user behavioral models and affinity for ebooks to understand users views on and degree of acceptance of ebooks. This study used the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) to investigate the influence and predictive power of the following independent variables on usage intention and usage behavior: performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions. Research results showed that a majority of respondents had smartphones (77 %). Respondents who used their phones mostly for entertainment purposes composed the largest category (55 %), while those who used their phones only for work purposes formed the smallest category (4 %). A large percentage occasionally read ebooks (47 %), but most respondents had never spent money on downloading payable ebooks (86 %). Regarding experience using ebooks, most respondents had used ebooks for under one year (42 %). Regarding experience using smart phones, the group that had used smart phones for less than one year was also the largest (60 %); a high percentage of users (68 %) had been using smart phones to read ebooks for less than one year. The predictive power of performance expectancy, facilitating conditions and effort expectancy on usage intention and usage behavior with regard to using smartphones to read ebooks achieved a level of significance. As for social influence and moderator experience, the predictive power didn’t reach a level of significance.

The main purposes of the study are as follows: (1) to probe into undergraduate students’ use and reading behavior of e-book databases; (2) to discuss the undergraduates’ perception and satisfaction of e-book databases; (3) to find out the factors affecting undergraduates’ use of e-book databases; (4) to understand undergraduate students’ opinions and current state of e-book databases promotions services in university libraries. The study using questionnaire and interviewing as research methods. Through literature review, this study sorts previous researches on reading and use of e-books into four dimensions. A questionnaire is designed according to these dimensions and delivered to undergraduate students of NCCU. Moreover, 15 undergraduates are selected through purposive sampling from the returned questionnaire for further interviews. The conclusion of this study is summarized as follows: (1) near fifty percent of NCCU undergraduates read e-books, but only two percent used e-book databases; (2) the main reason why undergraduates use e-book databases is for term papers or research purposes, and their needs are affected by their purposes and motivations; (3) the most used retrieval skill is keyword searching, and most undergraduates use e-book online, just skimming and scanning for one hour at most; (4) over fifty percent of undergraduates prefer books to e-books; (5) undergraduates are generally satisfied with e-book databases acquired by NCCU Libraries, but they are less than satisfied with promotions of e-book databases; (6) the most challenge of using e-book databases for undergraduates is that “tiring to read on screen,” and they are easily distracted while reading e-books; (7) the factors affecting undergraduates to use e-book databases are attributed to their previous user experience and external environments. According to these conclusions, there are some suggestions made for university libraries and concerned e-book market investors: (1) university libraries may work with investors to hold regular user satisfaction survey; (2) it is recommended to simplify the access to e-book databases and e-books ; (3) to achieve higher use rate, libraries may improve the quantity and quality of e-books, and build positive user experience with e-book databases for undergraduates; (4) libraries may suggest and support faculty to teach with e-books or e-book databases in their courses; (5) libraries and investors may develop more innovative, easier and friendlier services for undergraduate students.

The analysis of business model in E-book industry

Unknown Date (has links)
After Amazon launched Kindle in 2007, digital reading became the spotlight of the world and the eBook industry has been growing vigorously. However, digital content and e-readers are facing their own challenge respectively: high development cost but low duplicating cost. It is easy to copy the files on the internet, but it is difficult for the copyright owners to retrieve the deserved profit; as for the hardware, e-reader is facing the keen competition of tablets and smart phones and is no longer attractive to customers on the market. Under these challenging circumstances, how can each entity on the supply chain of E-book industry react and maximize their profits? This research assumes that free business model would be one of the possible solutions. In this research, “iPod” and “Zero-Price Handset” are selected as two different types of case study. This research tries to figure out what the key successful factors are in these two cases and discusses how these factors can fit in the eBook industry and the possibility of creating success or achieving their goal. If the answer is positive, then what the business model would be? This research shows that “Free digital content, Hardware sales as profit source” model cannot work in eBook industry. The main reason would be that the net profit of hardware cannot compensate the shortage of free digital content. On the other hand, the net profit of selling digital content would definitely compensate the shortage of free hardware, because the sales of digital content are continuous instead of one-time sale. What is more, free hardware could attract more potential customer and accumulate a huge amount of customer base. This model would be one of the possible solutions. This research also points out that educational and commercial market are niche markets for eBook companies and they should set strategies aggressively base on that fact.

Tien, Jui Hua Unknown Date (has links)

Adjustments and recommendations of the e-Books industry policy

Hsing, Chih Peng Unknown Date (has links)

EBook Lending Models in Public Libraries: Taiwan Cloud Library Database as an Example

Chen, Guan Yu Unknown Date (has links)
The advance of the transmission technology of the Internet has the service pattern of “digital publishing” become the development trend of libraries and further drive the type of digital reading. Focusing on eBook service and the service type of “One Copy, One User”, this study intends to discuss the idea of cooperative libraries and users of eBook Service about the new type of eBook lending mechanism, analyze users’ lending situations, aiming at the raw data offered by Yuan-Liou Publishing Co., Ltd. and Kaohsiung Public Library, observe the problems in current lending situations, and propose suggestions. The research findings are summarized as below. (1) The website observation and raw data analyses reveal different contents on various websites. The basic information in the card application for Kaohsiung Public Library is distinct from the quantity in the database, showing that the lending mechanism is not properly processed. (2) The coverage of major potential groups of digital reading and the reading behaviors as well as the satisfaction with eBook service are understood through the questionnaire. Differentiating with age, the general behavior patterns of digital reading users are acquired; and, the users present positive effects on the practical operation benefit of eBook Service websites. (3) The interviewer indicates that different sources of funds for libraries, except for promotions, are a key factor in the use rate. Besides, format, connection speed, and stability are the factors in libraries purchasing eBooks, the reputation of publishers, types of books provided, and the repetition rate of types of bought books would also be taken into account, and active titles and best sellers, which are the largely demanded types of eBooks, would be proposed. In this case, most respondents consider that the lending pattern of “charged by time” could effectively provide readers with proper services. Moreover, the idea of public lending right could facilitate the authors releasing the eBook copyright. Finally, specific suggestions for enhancing the sustained use intention of eBook lending service are proposed in this study for the reference of libraries reinforcing the use intention of the eBook lending service.

Liu-Chin Hu Unknown Date (has links)
關鍵詞:電子書包、高互動教室、網路教學、傳統教學 / Feasibility Study on the Implementation of Electronic Schoolbag based on Elementary School Teachers’ Opinions. Liu-Chin Hu Abstract The research is mainly to explore relevant opinions and the needs in the applied teaching mode of elementary school teachers with different backgrounds regarding the implementation of electronic schoolbags in elementary schools. This research utilized an convenient sample selection method by choosing all teachers within Taoyuan County’s 20 public elementary schools as research subjects. There were a total of 761 samples and 719 effective questionnaires were received. Statistical analysis using percentage and frequency distribution, one-way ANOVA, independent-sample t-test and χ2 test were conducted to analyze relevant data. The main results of this research were as follows: 1.
