Sundhage Lif, Lea Johanna January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how well adjusted the support is for young people that have been diagnosed with ADHD, while attending the gymnasium. Analysis and result are based on a sociocultural perspective and have their take-off in literaturestudies and qualitative interviews with two students with the diagnosis and one special needs teacher. The interviews were based on themes that had their starting point in school policy documents and related literature. The interviews were semi-structured with the aim of letting the interviewees speak as freely as possible. One of the themes included the individual strategies developed by the interviewees, such as using mobile-apps to help structure and plan for everyday life. Results show that the available support is not well adapted and that how great impact the ADHD-diagnosis has on how well the person do in school is greatly affected by in what social context and what kind of support he or she has outside of school, for example by family. The study shows that there is great need for further research and development within the research area.

Attention to retention: Implications of institutional practices of four-year colleges and universities on graduation rates of students with ADHD

Michael Dass, Paula L 01 January 2019 (has links)
Advances in medication and support services in high schools have influenced the growing number of students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) enrolling in colleges and universities. Unfortunately, their lower graduation rates and extended time to graduation creates multiple challenges to themselves, their institution’s, and their communities. Limited information is available regarding how disability services impact graduation rates for students with ADHD in higher education. More information is needed about how the practices instituted by disability support center leaders in post-secondary institution’s impact the graduation rates of students with ADHD. Retention, a financial and ethical concern for universities, is pushed to the forefront by lawmakers who demand an increased return on their state’s educational investment. Disability resource directors, school registrar officials, and disability resource center websites were data sources. Information was gathered about the number of students with ADHD that have graduated from each institution over the past three years. A non-experimental quantitative design (correlation) was used that provided a process for gathering information about use of disability services, which was then correlated and compared to the overall graduation rate of college students with ADHD over a three-year period. Qualitative information regarding types of services highlighted commonly used services and responses from directors were discussed regarding collaborative partnerships and training for faculty and staff. A positive correlation between use of services and graduation rate was found from examining one school that submitted complete data. Overall, the response rate was low, particularly for the colleges, which impacted the ability to respond to some of the research questions. Some directors noted a preference for the social theory of retention in support of why they don’t collect data on specific groups of students with disabilities, while others chose to not participate at all due to a lack of data tracking. Because funding for programming and targeted services depend on knowledge gained from data tracking, these findings may have implications for policy and practice. Educational leaders may be able to utilize the results of this study to shape future institutional policies and practices that impact the success of their students.

Vliv domácí přípravy na školní úspěšnost žáků se specifickými poruchami učení a chování / Influence of home preparation on school success of pupils with specific learniíng and behavioral disorders

Fialová, Klementina January 2019 (has links)
My thesis occupies with the influence of home preparation for successfulness of pupils with specific learning disturbances and behaviour in basic school. The theoretical part there are explained terms of specific evolutional disturbances of school skills. This part deals with etiology and diagnosis. There are legislative alterations of education and it includes complete reeducational school care which points on importance of teacher's personality and on forming of positive climate in the class. It describes family and its role in connection with all risk factors which influence it. The point of preparation determines learning and behaviour by way of concrete forms and methods of work with pupils with specific disturbances. The empirical part of thesis is compiled by method of qualitative research and it's a result of research investigation which is connected to detailed analysis of acquired data. The main methods of investigation were long-lasting structured pupils' observation, analysis of file documentation and analysis of professional advice. These all together and interviews made complete picture of individual case studies.

Júnior, Orison Marden Bandeira de Melo 29 August 2014 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Orison Marden Bandeira de Melo Junior.pdf: 5418428 bytes, checksum: 84bf1841112fead6609a0f0bd2716b78 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-08-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In general, the teaching of literature written in foreign languages at Brazilian universities faces a big challenge: Letras freshmen with limited knowledge of the foreign language find it difficult to analyze literary works in the original texts. Therefore, this research is justified by the need to discursively and pragmatically help students better analyze literature works. In order to do that, the theoretical discussion was based upon the works of the Bakhtin Circle [Bakhtin (2002, 2003, 2010), Bakhtin/Volochínov (2010), Voloshinov/Bajtin (1997), Voloshinov (1983), Medviédev (2012)] and of the pragmaticist Jacob Mey (2000, 2001, 2007). 68 Letras undergraduate students from a private university in the Eastern area of São Paulo were invited to participate in the research, which was approved by the Ethics Committee of PUC-SP under protocol number 054/2011 and whose data were generated in three different phases: The first one was related to literary analyses based on concepts from Pragmatics, such as from Micropragmatics (reference, verb tenses, presuppositions, implicatures and speech acts), from Macropragmatics (pragmatic presuppositions and pragmatic acts) and from Literary Pragmatics (speech and voice); the second phase involved literary analyses based on concepts from the Dialogical Discourse Analysis (DDA), such as utterance, genre, text, understanding, and dialogism; in the the third and last phase students did literary analyses based on the concepts from Pragmatics and DDA. The research corpus comprised three sets: (1) Letras DCN (National Curriculum Guidelines); (2) literary analysis activities done throughout the three phases, and (3) students stimulated recall reports. As to the literary works analyzed, they were nine short stories by Alice Walker. They were chosen by the researcher, who was also the students professor, due to their short length, their social role, and the dialogic relations there could be established between them. Based on the notion that texts are not autonomous, the only literary activities analyzed were the ones done by the students who had done the stimulated recall reports. Based on the understanding that the contextualized meanings produced by the students could not go beyond the fixity of meaning of the utterances, it was necessary to verify if students answers were potencially coherent with the plots and with the discourses that penetrate them. Moreover, as the research focused on students with limited knowledge of the target language, i.e., English, only the results of basic and intermediate level students were verified. It was possible to find that in the first phase, basic and intermediate students were able to coherently answer one fourth of the questions of the literary activities and, in the second phase, one third. However, in the third phase, this number significantly increased to two thirds. It was possible to conclude, thus, that the study of Pragmatics as the first step to the study of the concepts from DDA helped students with a limited knowledge of the English language to better understand and analyze literary works written in English and, consequently, to develop their linguistic skills / O ensino de literatura em língua estrangeira (LE) em universidades brasileiras, em geral, tem enfrentado um grande desafio: alunos ingressantes no curso de Letras com conhecimento limitado de LE, o que dificulta a execução de análises de objetos literários na língua original.

Mechin, David 20 December 2001 (has links) (PDF)

Particle Phenomenology of Compact Extra Dimensions

Melbéus, Henrik January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is an investigation of the subject of extra dimensions in particle physics. In recent years, there has been a large interest in this subject. In particular, a number of models have been suggested that provide solutions to some of the problem with the current Standard Model of particle physics. These models typically give rise to experimental signatures around the TeV energy scale, which means that they could be tested in the next generation of high-energy experiments, such as the LHC. Among the most important of these models are the universal extra dimensions model, the large extra dimensions model by Arkani-Hamed, Dimopolous, and Dvali, and models where right-handed neutrinos propagate in the extra dimensions. In the thesis, we study phenomenological aspects of these models, or simple modifications of them. In particular, we focus on Kaluza–Klein dark matter in universal extra dimensions models, different aspects of neutrino physics in higher dimensions, and collider phenomenology of extra dimensions. In addition, we consider consequences of the enhanced renormalization group running of physical parameters in higher-dimensional models. / QC 20120427
