Un océan, deux îles, un peuple, une culture... Un isolât rude mais autosuffisant qui n'avait que peu de contacts avec les habitants des autres îles issus des mêmes ancêtres Austronésiens. Les Polynésiens de Wallis et Futuna se retrouvent brusquement confrontés à l'altérité religieuse, civilisatrice et guerrière des européens. Dans l'arsenal de ces nouveaux arrivants dans le Pacifique sud, outre le sabre et le goupillon, en plus du commerce et de l'administration républicaine, s'implantent une nouvelle éducation au travers de l'école et de nouvelles pratiques sportives. Sur une durée de moins de 150 ans, des pans entiers de la culture originelle ont été mis à mal ou ont irrémédiablement disparu. Toutefois cette acculturation rapide dans cet espace éloigné et difficile d'accès n'a pas été totale et des traces persistent. Des syncrétismes ont eu le temps de se mettre en place, les mémoires ne se sont pas complètement effacées et une reculturation est en marche. Entre histoire, géographie humaine et anthropologie sociale, ce travail fait état des altérations successives qui ont conduit à l'évolution des pratiques physiques. Par-delà nous tenterons de comprendre les mécanismes intimes de la transformation et de la renaissance possible d'une culture. / An ocean, two islands, one people, one culture ... A rough and secluded but self-sufficient place with very few contacts with other islands and similar peoples from the same ancestors. The Polynesians of Wallis and Futuna find themselves abruptly confronted to the religious, civilizing and warlike otherness of the Europeans. In the arsenal of these new arrivals in the South Pacific, in addition to swords and brushes, in addition to trade and republican administration, a new kind of education is implanted through schooling and new sporting practices. Over a period of less than 150 years, entire facets of the original culture were altered or simply disappeared. However, this rapid acculturation in this remote and difficult-to-access place has not been total and traces persist. Syncretisms have had time to develop, the memories have not been completely erased and a reculturation is ongoing. Between history, human geography and social anthropology, this work attempts to report the successive alterations that led to the evolution of physical activities. Beyond that, we will try to understand the intimate mechanisms of the transformation and of the possible rebirth of a culture.

Exploring religious identity negotiation through consumption in secular context : the case of French-Maghreb women living in France / Explorer la négociation de l'identité religieuse par la consommation dans un contexte laïc : le cas des femmes franco-maghrébines en France

L'intégration des immigrés dans les sociétés occidentales est devenue un enjeu politique. Dans cette recherche, nous explorons la façon dont les femmes immigrées Maghrébines vivant en France négocient leur identité religieuse par la consommation et le choix des magasins. Nous nous focalisons plus particulièrement sur les premières et deuxièmes générations des immigrées Maghrébines aux niveaux de religiosité différents afin de comprendre comment elles négocient leur identité religieuse dans un contexte laïque. Trente-six entretiens qualitatifs semi-directifs ont été menés avec des femmes des deux générations (dont certaines appartenant à la même famille) pour explorer leur acculturation relative à l'Islam et à la consommation. Nos résultats montrent que les immigrées Maghrébines utilisent des produits de la culture Maghrébo-Islamique (le paradis restauré) et les produits de la culture française (le pseudo paradis) pour construire des positions identitaires différentes et créer une religiosité caméléon (dans le cas des femmes G1) ou une religiosité serpentin (dans le cas des femmes G2). Nous avons également identifié le rôle que joue, entre autres, le marché français dans la fabrication des identités des immigrées Musulmanes vivant en France. Dans les dyades mèrefille, l'émergence de tensions liées à l'acculturation invite à prendre en compte la religion comme déterminant de l'identité. / The integration of migrants into Western societies is increasingly becoming a political issue. In this research, we explore how Maghreb women living in France negotiate their religious identity through shopping and consumption. In particular, we focus on how first and second generations of immigrant women who have varying levels of religiosity negotiate their religious identity in the secular context. Interviews were conducted with thirty-six women in Paris (some being two generations within the same family) to explore their acculturation and inter-generational relationships in regards to Islam and consumption. First and second generations of Muslim Maghreb women use products and retail outlets choice from both Muslim Maghreb culture (the brought back heaven) and French culture (the pseudo heaven) inorder to create different identity positions that make their religiosity a chameleon/ serpentine one. We also identify the rule of French market (traditional and modern retailing) -among other factors- in fabricating Muslim Maghreb women identities. Within mother-daughter dyads, a number of inter-generational lifestyle tensions manifesting through consumption emerged indicating the need to separate religion as a determinant of identity.

Adult attachment, acculturation, and psychological well-being in Chinese/Taiwanese immigrants

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among adult attachment, acculturation, and psychological well-being in Chinese/ Taiwanese immigrants. Specifically, the present study examined how adult attachment predicted psychological well-being and how acculturation moderated the relationship between adult attachment and psychological well-being. Adult attachment was measured by two dimensions, attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. Acculturation was measured by two domains, behavioral aspect and psychological aspect of acculturation. Bivariate correlation analyses on attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance and psychological well-being were conducted. The results suggested that both attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were significantly negatively associated with psychological well-being. In addition, hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed where attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance were entered as predictor variables; acculturation towards Chinese orientation, acculturation towards American orientation and Asian cultural values as moderating variables; psychological well-being as the outcome variable. The results indicated that acculturation towards American orientation moderated the relationship between attachment anxiety and psychological well-being and the relationship between attachment avoidance and psychological well-being. The findings and discussions, limitations, implications for future research, clinical practice and training were addressed.

ENTANGLED BETWEEN ESL-NESS AND POVERTY: ACCULTURATION OF STUDENTS IN A GRADE 3-4 CLASS

This qualitative case study investigated how an elementary school shaped the acculturation processes of grade 3-4 immigrant students. It was grounded on John Berry’s model of acculturation strategies which maintains that the existence of multiculturalism in the host society is a necessary condition for the integration of immigrants. Also, Geneva Gay’s conceptualization of culturally responsive teaching was accepted as the analytical framework which represents the actualization of multiculturalism in school settings. The site of the study was an elementary school with a large number of immigrant students in Western Canada. The study used participant observation and interviews as methods of data collection. The audio recording of the classroom sessions for five full weeks, interviews with teachers and students, as well field notes were the sources of data. The analysis of the data showed that there was little evidence of culturally responsive teaching in the classroom. Findings suggest that these grade 3-4 students were receiving an education which is usually typified as the education for working-class children, were detached from their own culture, were taught by a curriculum defined by themes and orientation from Western/mainstream culture, and were experiencing a whole series of disconnected relationships among teachers, parents, and themselves. It was concluded that, despite the powerful multicultural policies at the provincial and school board level, school practices, and teachers’ attitudes were reflecting the melting pot-model of host society in Berry’s model and the process of institutional acculturation favoured assimilation rather than integration. / Thesis (Ph.D, Education) -- Queen's University, 2010-04-01 20:35:36.735

Being Brazilian, Becoming Canadian: Acculturation Strategies, Quality of Life, Negative Affect, and Well-being in a Sample of Brazilian Immigrants Living in the Greater Toronto Area

Acculturation is a predominant feature of today’s society and one that has unique implications for immigrants’ mental health. Given that two thirds of Canada’s population growth is due to immigration, understanding the effects of acculturation on newcomers should be a central focus of academic research. The present study utilized an exploratory quantitative method to investigate the associations between acculturation strategies, quality of life, and negative affect in a sample of 180 Brazilian immigrants living in the Greater Toronto Area. The mediating and moderating roles of quality of life (QOL) were explored, as well as which patterns of acculturation strategies were associated with enhanced well-being, represented by low negative affect (NA), high QOL, and high Satisfaction with Life in Canada (SLCI). Clusters analysis identified patterns of acculturation strategy use, resulting in four acculturation profiles: integrated, assimilated, separated, and marginalized. Results indicated that QOL did not act as either a mediator or moderator of the relationship between acculturation profiles and NA. With regard to well-being indicators, acculturation profiles successfully predicted NA and SLCI, with the Assimilated being the most favourable profile evidenced by its lowest NA and highest SLCI levels. While acculturation profiles did not predict QOL, the trend of the Assimilated profile being predictive of favourable well-being was also present as its members reported slightly higher QOL than their counterparts from other profiles. Well-being risk and protective factors are presented. The results highlight the importance of including control variables in future research in order to uncover the unique impact of acculturation on the mental health of immigrants. Implications for practice and future research are also discussed.

Acculturation is a phenomenon which results when groups of individuals with different cultures come into continuous first-hand contact with each other, with subsequent changes in the original culture patterns of either or both groups. What an individual does when he or she comes into contact with a second culture is assumed to have an effect on his or her sense of emotional well-being. It has been hypothesized that how one copes with that contact will affect such socio-emotional factors such as self-esteem, social adjustment and academic performance and mental health. Furthermore, it has been hypothesized that the strategies an individual uses to cope with second culture contact will have an effect on that individual's academic or job performance, sense of social competence, and psychological well-being. From the available literature, various models are used in acculturation studies, namely the Unidimensional model, Bidimensional model and Interactive Acculturation Model. It is from the latter models that three groups of variables were addressed in this study: at the group level, acculturation context variables include characteristics of the society of settlement (work) and characteristics of the society of origin, at the individual level, acculturation conditions include characteristics or factors that act as moderators prior to acculturation and during acculturation and acculturation outcomes refers to the consequences of the frequent contact between people from different cultural backgrounds in terms of how well they function (do) and feel. The general objective of this research is to analyse the acculturation process and to determine the impact of acculturation context and individual variables on acculturation outcomes of members of the SAPS. A cross-sectional survey design was used. A random sample (n = 153) was taken of members of the SAPS in the Pretora Arca. Instruments used in previous acculturation research were adapted to measure Mainstream Domain, Ethnocultural Domain, Individual variable and Socio Cultural Acculturation Outcomes. The results indicated that acculturation context and individual coping styles of members of the SAPS did impact on acculturation outcomes variables explaining 29% and 35% of the variance in physical and psychological (ill) health respectively and 26% and 33% of the variance in perceived (work success) effectiveness and efficiency at work and perceived status and recognition that you receive at work (for being successful) respectively. Although 14% and 13% of the variance in perceived commitment from the organisation to its employees and perceived commitment of the individual to its organisation, only one of the models used in the hierurchicul regressions were found to be statistically significant, with none of the predictors being statistically significant contributors. Positive acculturation context variables as predictors of acculturation outcomes in a mine in the Nort-West Province / Shahnaz Alli

This project analyses the acculturation process in a specific context, in order to predict the perceived work success and health (both psychological and physical) of mineworkers in a mine in the North-West Province.1 Success is evaluated in terms of meeting deadlines at work, reputation and respect at work, and training and development opportunities at work. Employees' success and health is considered from an acculturation perspective and thus viewed as a result of the acculturation process. This hypothesis was investigated by examining the affect of the acculturation context and individual intervening factors, which are translated into variables, on perceived work success and health (acculturation outcomes). A random convenience sample of participants from the mine under investigated was taken (n = 288 the majority of the participants are male, married, Black, and Afrikaans-speaking). English questionnaires using a cross-sectional survey design were administered to these participants. The questions were derived from adapted measuring scales and scales developed for the project, which follow a five-point Likert format ('strongly agree' to 'strongly disagree'). Four categories of instruments were used: those examining the mainstream domain (multiculturalism, tolerance of other cultures by the mainstream, multicultural practices, relationships with host culture members at work), individual intervening factors (individual integration acculturation strategy and perceived self-efficacy), acculturation outcomes (health and work success), and the ethnocultural domain (ethnic integration demands, ethnic solidarity and social support, relationship with co-ethnics, and ethnic vitality at work). The data was captured in a spreadsheet, quality controlled, and statistically analysed using multivariate analysis of variance, one-way analysis of variance, and T-tests in SAS, SPSS, and AMOS (regression using structural equation modelling). Descriptive statistics, Cronbach alpha coefficients, and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were examined. Effect sizes were used to determine the practical significance of the findings. Perceived self-efficacy is a statistically significant predictor of work success in terms of meeting deadlines. Multicultural practices, ethnic integration demands at work, relationship with co-ethnics individual integration acculturation strategy, and perceived self-efficacy statistically significant predictors of work success in terms of reputation and respect at work.
