Genus i arkiv : En fallstudie om kvinnors arkivmaterial i Sveriges Pressarkiv / Gender in Archives : A Case Study of the archival documents of women in the Swedish Archive of PressJansdotter, Evelina January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to study the archiving of Womens archival documents in the Swedish Archive of Press. Through a case study three aspects of archival practice will be studied: collecting, description and availability. The study also aims to shed light on the issues of gender and archives and to emphasize the possibilities that gender perspectives offer to make women visible in archives. The theoretical framework consists of gender theory, intersectional perspectives and archival theory. The method used is a case study in which text studies, interviews and analysis of the historical background and con- text together form a triangulation witch aims to strengthen the analysis. The source material consists of archival inventories of the women’s personal archives, archival documents, transcripted interviews and historical literature. The results of this study shows that women have been made both visible and unvisable in the archival hold- ings. It also shows how structures based on gender, in society and within archival practice, has through unreflect- ing practices led to women being made visible and unvisable in archival holdings. The results also show how the archival practice partly rests on a basis of the notion of archives and archivists as neutral and objective. To im- plement gender perspectives in archival practice this notion needs to be replaced by an awareness of the power relations that exists within the archival profession and archival institutions.

Allt som finns kvar : Om personarkiv hos föräldrar som förlorat små barn / All That's Left Behind: Personal Archives of Parents Who've lost InfantsHedman, Lina January 2013 (has links)
The object of this two years master's thesis has been to study a specific genre of personal archives by examiningthe archives of nine parents who have lost one or several infants. Using internet-based methods, (e-mail, Skypeand digital photographs), I have conducted qualitative research using a general interview guide technique. Usingresearch from archival theory as well as other fields, my material has been arranged and analysed according tothemes and recurring thoughts picked up from my informants during the interviews. My main theoretical aid has been that the role of parent who has lost a child is the starting point for the creationof the personal archives. Another important theory is my definition of the term “document” as not dependent onmedium and format, but on usage: if an object has been used as a part of an archive, it is a document. I also claimthat study of personal archives is a way to help the archival profession and Swedish archival theory to becomemore democratic and inclusive, since especially the former is mandated to reflect all of society's many manifestationsof culture and memory. The results show that the archives contain a large selection of documents in differentformats and mediums, but that they also have many similarities. This is an effect of the fact that the parentshave all had roughly the same document-creating contacts with their relatives and friends, the authorities and theother parts of society often involved in the events proceeding the child's birth and death (or sickness and death). The reasons to create and maintain a personal archive are to preserve the memories of events, people, places, thoughts and feelings associated with the child and whatever time the parents got to spend with him or her. By remembering, the parents are also confirming the child's existence and place within the family, and helping themselvesconfirm their newly acquired role as parents who have lost a child. The archives and their constituent partsare used as physical and psychological “linking objects”, to help the parents feel (at least temporary) closer totheir child by watching, touching or talking about the most important documents. These are often the ones displayedon special memory shelves, on family photo walls or in memory boxes. It follows that arrangement of thedocuments is based mostly on the emotional attachment of the parent to the individual document, and that destructionof records are extremely rare in the studied archives. Their growth diminished with time, but does notstop completely since the parents, other relatives and friends still create new documents, mostly to observe holidaysand anniversaries. Furthermore, the way the parents use their archives and its constituent parts change astime passes. Individual documents may also change their emotional and cultural significance to the parent, orgain additional ones. Some of the underlying factors behind these findings are my informants views on creating, keeping and destroying documents. They all express a need to “save everything”, and most also want to “documenteverything”. The latter, their wish to create new documents to complement the ones created primarily byothers and as a result of specific events and processes, comes from a feeling of not having enough documents inthe archives. It can also be the result of dissatisfaction with those that do exist. Finally, as is commonplace amongpersonal archives, the archives in my study have multiple record creators within the immediate family and outsideit, even though my informants are usually the main creators. Yrkesroll i förändring? : En studie av ett antal statsanställda arkivariers upplevelser av införandet av en verksamhetsbaserad arkivredovisning / An altered profession? : A Study of a number of Archivists in Public Authorities and their Experiences of the Implementation of a Process Oriented Archival Description SystemGrönroos, Ida January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the archivist's professional role in public authorities and discuss if, and in what way, the profession is effected by the new swedish process oriented archival description system. The study focuses on swedish authorities and does not make any international comparisons with other institutions. Neither does it investigate archivists workingin the private sector, but centers on public institutions. The survey is performed in five swedish public authorities, using interviews and observations. Grounded theory is used as a method initially in the purpose of keeping an open mark towards the object of study. The initial results led on to questions about how well the archivists perceived that communication within the authorities served, and how this in turn prepossessed their work situation and the professional roles in which they found themselves. To answer these questions, theories from the subjects of sociology and social psychology, among other things the idea of sensemaking as it is put by Karl Weick, was used to analyze the material. The result of the analysis shows that the implementation of a new archival system has generated a change in the archivists work tasks. The archivists in the studied authorities did in some cases, out of this new situation, manage to find a professional role in which they felt comfortable, and in some cases not. The difference between these two categories seemed to stem from a difference in the ability to make sense of their situations in their workplaces respectively. In the cases where the archivists ideas of their responsibilities and provinces did not correlatewith their employers a lack of sensemaking occured and led to confusion and conflict. This discrepancy between the archivists and the employer's expectations, the thesis argues, comes from the change in the archival profession that is taking place due to the changes in society at large. The employers' traditional image of an archivist clashes with the archivists new professional role. From this it is suggested that if consent is not reached around the archivists place in the organizations, and in society, much knowledge is at risk of being lost, and much competence going to waste. Bland kranier, modeller och elektronmikroskop : Ett ordnings- och förteckningsarbete på Museum Gustavianum, föremålsmagasin Husbyborg, av handlingar rörande utgrävningen i AsineEriksson, Daniel January 2012 (has links)
This paper is an account of the inventory I've made of documents in the archive at Museum Gustavianum, Collections storage Husbyborg, relating to the excavations in Asine, Greece, in the 1920s. The aim of this inventory has been to establish which of the documents in the Husbyborg archives that belong to the department of Classical Studies at Uppsala University. Documents belonging to other archives have been found alongside the one mentioned above and those are the Original documentation (loan from Carolina) and the personal archive of Professor Axel W. Persson. The documents have been arranged according to the General Archive Scheme (Allmänna arkivschemat) seeing that the department of Classical Studies already had a series named Documents relating to the departments archeological collections, and the inventory I've made will be incorporated with that. The subject of this one year master's thesis in archival science has been, other than the inventory itself, to describe and examine the difficulties I've encountered during this inventory, which are separation of archives, principle of provenance and photographs.

Crowdsourcing som tillämpningsmetod hos svenska arkivinstitutioner : En kvalitativ undersökning ur ett maktperspektiv / The Use of Crowdsourcing in Swedish Archival Institutions : A Qualitative Study from a Power StandpointHansson, Amanda January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis I have chosen to study the use of crowdsourcing in Swedish archival institutions as well as the influence this methodic platform has on the work of modern archivists. This also raises the question whether the nature of the platform is in any way influenced by the attitude working professionals might have towards crowdsourcing as a legitimed working method. This investigation is based on case studies and interviews with archivists from select Swedish institutions and also the methodology of two now ongoing crowdsourcing projects. The theoretical framework on which this composition is based comes from the work of Gregory Asmolov and his work on crowdsourcing platforms and their functionality as tools of governing. Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) is applied to analyze how the method of crowdsourcing is utilised by archival institutions and influenced by their daily routine in conjunction with Governmentality as the chosen way of studying how these platforms might control their users. From the results of the performed case studies, two discourses emerged based on the view on quality concerning gathered information amongst the involved subjects. The first of these discourses places it´s trust and faith in users themselves where validity is of a lesser concern than the actual availability of information through the concept of ”wisdom of the crowds”. Discourse number two represents an alternate perspective where quality of information is of the outmost importance and requires the supervision of professionals upon the work of common users. Through the course of this study I have come to find that the use of crowdsourcing in Swedish archival institutions is mainly controlled by the archivist in charge´s attitude towards this specific working method and in a larger context also formed by the basic archival discourse, legal questions and financial matters of the last century. Släktforskning på nätet : Onlinetjänsters påverkan på släktforskares informationsbeteende / Genealogy on the Internet : The Influence of Online Services on Genealogists' Information BehaviourLarsson, Gabriel January 2014 (has links)
With the technological development of the last decades, an increasing number of genealogists are carrying out their research online. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine how and why genealogists' information behavior has been influenced by the use of online services for genealogy. Using a conceptual model of genealogists' information behavior as theoretical basis for the study, I examine how the use of online services affect genealogists’ search process, what information they are looking for and what information resources they use. Data is collected by seven qualitative interviews with experienced genealogists. The interviews indicate that online services have not completely taken over the genealogists’ search for information. Genealogists still went to physical repositories for a number of reasons. However, all participants in the study agreed that their visits to physical repositories and their use of physical records had declined since they began to use online services. The search for information was perceived to have become easier and more convenient with online services, although participants also acknowledged the risks of misleading information. Online services for genealogy also seem to have an influence on the contact between genealogists, especially on international contacts. This, together with the increasing research on foreign material, indicates that genealogy has been internationalized as a result of the use of online services. To the extent that the use of online services affects genealogists' information behavior, it seems in large part to be a result of online services removing geographical barriers that previously influenced genealogists’ information behavior. Forensisk genetisk genealogi : En etisk diskussion av polisens samarbete med genetisk släktforskning för att lösa ouppklarade fallLeppäkoski, Julia January 2021 (has links)
During the past couple of years, genetic genealogy has been used as an instrument for law enforcement to identify and catch criminals of unsolved cases. The method has created an ethical discussion concerning individual integrity and the potential risks an implementation of a method like this could cause. The purpose of this essay is to examine this method from an ethical perspective and discuss aspects like personal integrity, legislation and in what way people who send in their DNA to genealogy companies can affect their genetic data. Five different DNA testing genealogy companies have been selected to study and discuss in this essay. By examining their terms of conditions and privacy policies, the study will investigate how these companies act regarding the potential use from law enforcement of their DNA-databases to solve crimes. Parts of the current ethical debate regarding the method will also be presented and discussed to show potential advantages and disadvantages using a method like this could lead to. The results from the study show that forensic genetic genealogy could have both its advantages and disadvantages. Using the method has shown to be successful in capturing perpetrators behind unsolved crimes but it has also led to innocent people getting involved into criminal investigations. There are multiple ethical aspects concerning the method and the results show that there is a lack of research about the method and these aspects. There is also a lack of legislation or other forms of regulations regarding the method. The conclusion that therefore has been made is that there needs to be more research made about the ethical aspects of the method and that there needs to be more regulations to avoid the disadvantages using the method potentially could bring.

“I arkivet blir människor mer levande” - en studie om arkiv i historieundervisningen / In the Archive History comes to Life -The Usage of Archives in History EducationIvarsson, Stephaie, Mohammed, Amran January 2024 (has links)
To meet history in the archives can give a feeling of contact and closeness to the past. It can awaken a joy and interest for the subject of history. The power of the primary sources in the archives is something that could be used in historical education to not only arouse a joy for a lifelong learning but also for the understanding of the past. In order to make students develop their idea of history they need to encounter and work with primary historical sources. This also aligns with the Swedish curriculum for the subject of history as it says that the history education should give students an insight to historical methods. It also states that students should meet sources and artifacts that reflects human living conditions throughout history. The aim of this study has been to showcase the cooperation between Swedish history teachers in high school and the archives. It also studies the educational value and benefits of that cooperation. Our preconceived idea, and our own experience, has been that a lot of teachers aren't aware of the power of the archives and that the archives aren't aware of the needs that teachers and adolescents have. The study shows that this is partly true, but also highlights the parts of the collaboration that works well. This study has a qualitative approach and its method has been semi-structured interviews with both teachers and the staff of several archives. To find these informants we have used Arkivpedagogiskt Forum, a platform that connects staff in the archives who conduct educational work. The teachers of this study have been selected from our personal connections. The study’s contribution is twofold. Firstly it provides an insight to the cooperation that exists between archives and teachers today in Sweden. It shows what teachers want from the archives in order to make the cooperation more efficient, as well as the parts of the cooperation that works very well. Secondly, it shows that archives do have an enormous potential in history education to activate and develop students' historical consciousness through historical empathy and historical thinking.

Hur arkiverar Sveriges byggföretag? : Ett försök att finna arkiveringspraxis i en för kulturarvet viktig företagsbransch / How are the Swedish Building Corporations building up their archives? : An attempt to find an archive building custom in a line of business of importance for the cultural heritageHögman, Nils January 2010 (has links)

What traces of their actions are the Building Corporations in Sweden leaving in their archives and are they followingsome archival policies? This thesis is trying to answer that question. For that reason 25 archives fromSwedish Building Corporations have been investigated concerning their size, contents and age. Furthermore apoll performed by the Swedish National Archives in cooperation with the Swedish Employers’ Confederationhas been analyzed. As a complement to these investigations some people responsible for the archives at SwedishBuilding corporations have been interviewed about their companies’ archival policies. The result of this study is, sadly enough, that the Swedish Building Corporations are neglecting their archives. Most of the archives that were studied are very small, less than half a running metre. A few builders of thegeneration born in the late nineteenth century have left more or less extensive archives, but they were very poorlyorganized. But generally the will to build up archives for the need of the future researchers and for the culturalheritage seems to be very poor in the Building Corporations, even poorer than in the Swedish companies in general.Almost no archival strategies could be discerned, other than that most companies preserve their record onlyfor that time the law and their own immediate needs prescribe. That is a shame, concerning the Building Corporations’importance for the cultural heritage in that that the buildings they are making are forming our culturalenvironment. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archival Science.

Elektronmusikstudion : : ett förteckningsarbete / The Electronic Music Studio of Stockholm : the archival process.Bjurman, Jens January 2010 (has links)

The electronic music studio ”Elektronmusikstudion” (EMS) inStockholm was initiated in 1963. It has had several different managers throughout the years. EMS soon became a rather costly project. Furthermore there have been several conflicts among staff and users wich has contributed to EMS fairly turbulent history. One main conflict concerns the issue wether EMS should be a research facility or a studio for composers. The many different managers of EMS have contributed to a rather unstructured filing of records. To facilitate the understanding of the documents in this archive, and because there is very little written about EMS history, I’ve included a rather comprehensive description of EMS organizational history.

The subject of this one year master’s thesis is to describe and examine difficulties I’ve encountered in the archival process. My main issues comprise the organization and separation of some of the documents, especially those concerning the conception and organization of EMS and also the abundant technical documentation. Also the question of office of origin has been a concern.
