Poland: The Historical Underdog and Contemporary Protector of Ukraine : A Narrative Analysis on Ontological Security and Crisis in the Case of Poland

Gråby, Isabel January 2023 (has links)
In recent years, more research has been conducted to explain state behavior in relation to crises. Poland has taken a conservative turn since 2015, distancing itself from mainstream European strategies. This is explained by self-identity needs stemming from historical experiences and envisioned futures. The escalation of the war in Ukraine at the beginning of 2022 has impacted Polish ontological security, aligning Polish political goals with those of the European Union and Ukraine, while also confirming negative perceptions of Russia as an imperialist power. By conducting a case study on Poland using narrative analysis, three biographical narratives are identified. The war in Ukraine has deepened stories of Polish heroism, victimhood, and Poland as a progressive force or leader, implying that crisis does impact ontological security in this case. The theory of ontological security can therefore be argued to highlight mechanisms that traditional security perspectives overlook, providing a more complete picture of what shapes and motivates self-identity needs and state action.

Unusual perceptions at the end of life: limitations to the diagnosis of hallucinations in palliative medicine

Kellehear, Allan 13 January 2016 (has links)
No / The diagnosis of hallucination for unusual perceptions such as deathbed visions, near-death experiences, or visions of the bereaved, is unhelpful in palliative medicine both academically and clinically. This paper reviews the broad prevalence data about unusual perceptions in the general population as to identifying the more narrow epidemiological source from which the much smaller focus on hallucinations seem to emerge. Major debates and limitations of current hallucination research are reviewed to show that current academic and clinical certainties are largely confined to unusual perceptions that can be readily linked to psychopathology, quite specific organic disease states and psychoactive drug use. Current state-of-the-art in hallucination studies does not warrant broad or uncritical use of this type of diagnosis in end-of-life care. Conclusions from interdisciplinary (as opposed to single discipline) hallucination studies suggest that the way forward for clinical and research work in palliative medicine may lie in a more biographical and cultural approach to unusual perceptions at the end of life.

Narratives in a drug court setting

Keller, Anna Catherina Maria 01 January 2006 (has links)
The purpose of the project is to develop and evaluate a writing unit that could be used to teach adult students in a drug court program. The project is based on theories behind narrative therapy, its use in the treatment of persons with addiction problems, and how the reframing of students' own life stories through writing can bring about change. By using writing prompts as both therapeutic and educational tools, the author hoped to improve the students' life-coping skills and their writing abilities. The unit consists of paragraph writing, essay writing, reflective writing that focused on past events, and using computers to compose and format texts. The author evaluated a preliminary draft of the unit by submitting it to four education professionals with a questionnaire. Data was also collected from the author's students by means of surveys, interviews, and writing samples. Feedback from the professionals and the students guided the revision of the unit. The questionnaire, survey, and interview questions used in the project and the preliminary and final revised drafts of the teaching unit are included.

Sexualité des femmes blessées médullaires en France : Comportements sexuels, vécu, attentes et soins / Sexuality of spinal cord injured women in France : Sexual behavior, lived experience, expectations and care

Mokadmi, Sarra 23 November 2018 (has links)
Sexual health, as advocated by the World Health Organization, is key to physical, emotional health and well-being.As well as in men, the occurrence of a spinal cord lesion (SCL) in women may negatively impact their sexual function and sexual activity. Improving their sexual function and sexual activity would improve their quality of life. However, very little data is currently available on the sexuality of spinal cord injured women in France. The aim of this thesis was to describe these women’s experiences with sexuality and the diversity of potential management modalities for associated disorders.Based on an interdisciplinary public health approach this work associated biomedical, psychosocial and epidemiological, qualitative and quantitative perspectives. It included three steps.A systematic and qualitative review of the literature identified recommendations, expert advices, or research data for sex educating women with SCL; in order to identify practical strategies for setting up such support. Well-managed complications of the lesion, a careful, multidisciplinary approach, peer support and long-term follow-up are at the top of this literature's teaching priorities.Data collected from a newly equipped outpatient gynecological clinic specifically for women with disabilities were analyzed. They showed that despite a frequently preserved sexual activity, women with SCL had hardly received any gynecological and specific preventive care despite a persistent sexual activity. Moreover, this was also true in those who were in a multidisciplinary and specialized care network. However, this type of consultation could be an opportunity to address their sexuality and identify their potential needs in this area.A qualitative study conducted with 20 participants showed that the occurrence of a SCL represented a significant biographical disruption beyond the lesion itself. These women may have very different reactions depending on their history and personal circumstances and thus have a life-changing experience of their sexuality. This work sheds some light on the needs in terms of sexual care for women with SCL, and suggests guidelines for future care modalities.

Account-giving in the narrative of farming in isiXhosa

Ralehoko, Refilwe Vincent 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (African Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / The purpose of this study is to examine message production and image restoration in the narratives of isiXhosa-speaking farming communities. According to Gergen (1994), narrative forms – such as the stability narrative, progressive narrative and regressive narrative – are linguistic tools that have important social functions to fulfil. Gergen (1994) further indicates that self-narratives are social processes in which individuals are realised on the personal perspective or experience. The self-narratives used and analysed in this study portray the contemporary, truth-based elements of a well-formed narrative. Narrative accounts are also embedded within social action; they render events socially visible and typically establish expectations for future events because the events of daily life are immersed in narrative. The study starts by laying the foundation for the reasons why human beings tell stories and why stories are so important in people’s daily lives, since most people begin their encounters with stories at childhood. Possibly because of this intimate and long-standing acquaintance with stories from childhood, stories also serve as critical means by which human beings make themselves intelligible within the social world. This study further examines the motivations and conditions for account-giving in isiXhosa. Accounts are similar to narratives and can be retained at the level of private reflections for others to read, to be educated and to learn from and to refer to from time to time. Gergen (1994) considers self-narratives as forms of social accounting or public discourse. In this sense, narratives are conversational resources, their construction open to continuous alteration as interaction progresses. The study elaborates on this phenomenon, especially in the narrative accounts of the various isiXhosa stories that were collected and analysed. What emerges from the analyses is that the individual characters whose stories are told are portrayed as moving through their experience, dealing with some conflict or problem in their lives and, at the same time, searching for a resolution. It also emerges from the collection of these various isiXhosa narratives that they sharpen our understanding of the major stressful situations in each person’s mind and how the individual reasons about the difficulties encountered in life. The narratives prove, in this regard, to be a cultural resource that serves social purposes, such as self-identification, self-justification, self criticism and social solidification. In this sense then, for an account to be true, it has to be goal-orientated and relate to people’s day-to-day lives. The study finds that the social-interactive aspects of account-giving involve severe reproach forms, including personal attacks and derogatory aspects, which elicit defensive reactions resulting in negative interpersonal and emotional consequences.

The journey to authentic leadership through the exploration of self

Nasson, Adrian 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This reflexive narrative traces the development of the author’s authentic leadership fingerprint. The document outlines the author’s developmental journey from the streets of North-End in Port Elizabeth, to the boardroom tables of major telecommunications organisations in Africa, Continental United States and Europe. Utilising autoethnography as a vehicle of enquiry, the author relates his life story, with a specific focus on significant trigger events, individuals who had a positive or negative influence on the development of his world view; and the dynamic of a racially reclassified family living in Apartheid-era South Africa. The author recounts specific incidents and reflects upon significant learnings that continue to influence his leadership style as corporate manager today. The author concludes with a reflection of the transformative power of the autoethnographic process and it’s potential use as a leadership development tool, before defining an authentic leadership fingerprint that is unique to his management style.
