PROCESSING AND CLASSIFICATION OF PHYSIOLOGICAL SIGNALS USING WAVELET TRANSFORM AND MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS

Bsoul, Abed Al-Raoof 27 April 2011 (has links)
Over the last century, physiological signals have been broadly analyzed and processed not only to assess the function of the human physiology, but also to better diagnose illnesses or injuries and provide treatment options for patients. In particular, Electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure (BP) and impedance are among the most important biomedical signals processed and analyzed. The majority of studies that utilize these signals attempt to diagnose important irregularities such as arrhythmia or blood loss by processing one of these signals. However, the relationship between them is not yet fully studied using computational methods. Therefore, a system that extract and combine features from all physiological signals representative of states such as arrhythmia and loss of blood volume to predict the presence and the severity of such complications is of paramount importance for care givers. This will not only enhance diagnostic methods, but also enable physicians to make more accurate decisions; thereby the overall quality of care provided to patients will improve significantly. In the first part of the dissertation, analysis and processing of ECG signal to detect the most important waves i.e. P, QRS, and T, are described. A wavelet-based method is implemented to facilitate and enhance the detection process. The method not only provides high detection accuracy, but also efficient in regards to memory and execution time. In addition, the method is robust against noise and baseline drift, as supported by the results. The second part outlines a method that extract features from ECG signal in order to classify and predict the severity of arrhythmia. Arrhythmia can be life-threatening or benign. Several methods exist to detect abnormal heartbeats. However, a clear criterion to identify whether the detected arrhythmia is malignant or benign still an open problem. The method discussed in this dissertation will address a novel solution to this important issue. In the third part, a classification model that predicts the severity of loss of blood volume by incorporating multiple physiological signals is elaborated. The features are extracted in time and frequency domains after transforming the signals with Wavelet Transformation (WT). The results support the desirable reliability and accuracy of the system.

The historical and evolutionary process of the cultural production developed a context where digital media promote important transformations and where relationships in new space-time structures bring changes to the environment. In this conjuncture of change emerge the artistic production that is named here as Poetics of Multitude. In this poetics, the media assume a central role in the net collaborative autonomies that characterize them. For understanding them, it is necessary to identify new forms of living together with the writings of Bauman (2000, 2003), Santos (2005) e Souza Santos (2005, 2006), and with them, to reflect about globalization. In the perspective presented in this thesis, the body is treated as a primary media in accordance to the Bodymedia Theory, developed by Katz (2005) and Greinner (2005). Understood as a response to capitalism, the poetics of multitude is understood as a symptom of the contemporary society. The theory of Negri and Hardt (2004), and Virno (2002) sustains the research. In multitude - this new form of existence that contrasts to the ideas of folk or mass the poetics is related to autonomies in forms of net collaboration. And is present also in the creation and distribution of new ways of thinking dance. An interaction of neighbors , without the traditional practices of leadership and hierarchy promotes a kind of authonomy theoretically supported by concepts of evolution, co-adaptation and co-dependence (Dawkins (1976, 1978, 1998, 1999) and Dennett (1995). Such social systems auto-organize themselves through indirect control resembling what happens in other live systems (Gordon (2002) and Johnson (2003). Actions of the body in the world produce poetic emergences. We propose that the new forms of social organization that are being put in the world produce new ways of addressing knowledge and a new position to the subject / Diferentes formas de comunicação se dão em novas formas de organização social.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Paula Carolina Petreca.pdf: 1234607 bytes, checksum: 16d8cb1fa96eb99b2e8ec48d32d3195f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-05-06 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The German choreographer Pina Bausch has had her work diffused thanks to the contribution of cultural journalism, legitimizing its assimilation into symbolic systems which compose Brazilian cultural assembly. The phenomenon performed by cultural journalism between the first two Bausch s Brazilian tours, occurred in 1980 and 1990 respectively, the first being a pale episode as the audiences reception has been cold and critical, while the second has elevated the German company to a greater level of recognition. What happened meanwhile that promoted such a change? The hypothesis is that the diffusion of information operated by press has dealt to a better knowledge of the choreographer s work, as well as turning it to be familiar to local cultural production, dealing to the construction of a context which is being under process for more than two decades. Reflections raised by Critical Theories of Communication, according to the following authors: Benjamin (1936), Baudrillard (1995), Jameson (1998) and Bauman (2001); evoke arguments which contextualize the cultural compreension of the environment that hosts the object of this research, and the object (the action of cultural journalism between 1980 and 1990 over the diffusion of information about Pina Bausch) focus on the scope of multitude s speech (Negri, 2005). The research over material published in two newspapers from São Paulo: O Estado de São Paulo e Folha de São Paulo, has been related to testimonials of various Brazilian choreographers who recognise that the information brought by Pina Bausch has transformed and impacted their work. The methodology applied has enabled the delimitation of the role played by the newspapers previously mentioned, while interchanging information between public and artists. Theoric-practical transit has been estabilished while interviewing local choreographers whose production relate in a certain way to Pina Bausch s one, that have argumented over this issue. Regarding the lack of specific conjunctural historic source concerning dance in Brazil, this dissertation aims to contribute to on-course discussions over cultural journalism impact and its traces in Brazilians dance / O jornalismo cultural contribuiu para difundir o trabalho da coreógrafa alemã Pina Bausch, legitimando sua assimilação junto aos sistemas simbólicos componentes da tessitura cultural brasileira.

Bambini, Simone Ribeiro de Oliveira 05 May 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:17:12Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Simone Ribeiro de Oliveira Bambini.pdf: 2352212 bytes, checksum: 1cfd17fcb4e0b6bc8105d2229a5712ed (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-05-05 / In our days, In Brazil, all communication graduations tend to ignore the human body in communication relationships. This sector was built with no consideration to the human body importance in the communication relationship. Consequences of that behaviour are very clear e can be perceived in every phase of the communication relationship. The subject identification was the starting point for a research, which has been detailed here in the format of a paper, which has identified the urgency in modifying the actual education of futures communication professionals, creating new communication practices. In order to respond to this question, this research has focused in what occurs with the social communication within companies. Its object is the human communication study within companies, investigating the human body impact in the communicator education, as it understands the relationship between communication theory taught in the universities and obstacles for the creation of new and expected companies practices as the central point. Its objective is to discuss this process and strategies applied by communication professionals from the market as being a result of the bibliography which are adopted by communication graduations and are part of these professionals education. While mapping the actual situation, it has been surged the theory that it is possible to relate what is taught in the universities in public relationship, publicity, merchandising and marketing graduations, with the criticism absence of these professionals in the market. This was the starting point for the proposal that another bibliography, more adequate to encourage students to apply a critic reflection, could be included in actual universities, to help future professionals to become able to deal with this growing society complexity / No Brasil, os cursos de comunicação social tendem a ignorar o papel do corpo humano nas relações comunicacionais.
