ANZAC Peacekeeping: Trans-Tasman Responses to the Bougainville Crisis in 1997 and the Subsequent Evolution of Australia's and New Zealand's Regional Peacekeeping

Baird, Rosemary Anne January 2008 (has links)
This thesis investigates the evolution of Australian and New Zealand peacekeeping operations in the Pacific through a trans-Tasman lens. Both Australian and New Zealand sources are used in order to understand the relationship and interaction between the two nations. This study has a particular focus on the Truce Monitoring Group (TMG) sent to Bougainville in late 1997. This New Zealand-led operation was the first long-term regional peace initiative of recent times, and set the stage for future regional interventions by Australia and New Zealand. The thesis also considers more broadly the subsequent involvement of Australian and New Zealand peacekeepers in the International Force in East Timor (INTERFET) and Regional Assisted Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI). These two later operations are considered with particular attention to lessons learnt from previous peacekeeping experiences and the changing tenor of trans-Tasman relations. Since this is a history thesis it sets the argument within a historical and historiographical framework. It seeks to identify long-term trends surrounding Australia's and New Zealand's relationship with the Pacific, defence connection and Anzac heritage. A further aim of this thesis is to investigate whether joint Australian and New Zealand peacekeeping in the Pacific revived the Anzac relationship first formed at Gallipoli. By looking at evidence taken from interviews and first-hand accounts with Australian and New Zealand participants in the TMG, INTERFET and RAMSI, this thesis argues that hallmarks of the earlier Anzac relationship did re-emerge, though in a slightly different form. The phenomenon of New Zealand's reputation as having a cultural advantage in the Pacific is explored in some detail as this is an important aspect of the Anzac relationship.

Partiremos de um estudo sobre o século XVIII – Século das Luzes – e os seus antecessores, a fim de compreendermos o projeto de viagem empreendido por Bougainville e o posicionamento filosófico de Diderot. A tese apresenta reflexões que se fazem necessárias, como: o papel da memória na produção do relato de viagem; as relações entre o viajante-escritor (quem lembra) e o leitor (quem imagina); as intertextualidades presentes nas duas obras analisadas, para que possamos diferenciar a viagem física e a viagem imaginária, bem como apresentar o jogo de leituras entre as duas obras; a apropriação da obra de Bougainville por parte do leitor Diderot / This research titled Entre o convés e a escrivaninha: viagens, leituras e escritas de Bougainville e Diderot aims to analyze how the literature travel begin the relationship with the real, fictitious and imaginary, checking the relations between Voyage autour du monde, Louis Antoine de Bougainville, and the other travelers' tale, also studying how these same reports and other references influenced the individual and collective imaginary about traveler-writer Bougainville in the production of his work, using reflection based on the literary text, Supplément au voyage de Bougainville by Denis Diderot, classified as a philosophical tale. We will start studying the eighteenth century, the Enlightenment, and its predecessors; aims to understand the travel project undertaken by Bougainville and the philosophical opinion of Diderot. This thesis presents reflections that are necessary, such as : the function of memory in the production of a travelogue; the relationship between the traveler-writer (who remembers) and the reader (who thinks); the intertextuality present in two works analyzed to possibility us to recognize the physical journey and the imaginary journey and present the game of readings between the two works; the appropriation of Bougainville work by the reader Diderot

Bougainville, Lévis, Vaudreuil : trajets dans les historiographies de la guerre de Sept Ans

Jalbert, Andréanne 09 1900 (has links)
Very popular since the 1980s, studies on collective memory have stimulated interest in historiography and especially in the construction of heroic figures. The thesis follows this trend in studying how a multinational historiography treated three French officers of the Seven Years’ War’s North American theatre. We observe how Vaudreuil, Bougainville and Lévis have fared at the hands of historians from Great Britain, France, the United States and English and French Canada, from the eighteenth century to the present. The purpose of the study is to isolate the varying perspectives from which historians of different times and national allegiance have examined the three figures. In the end, the three men were seen to incarnate three contrasting, variously interpreted postures. Since historians were particularly sensitive to what they saw as national conflicts, they judged their heroes accordingly. Vaudreuil, the Canadian-born governor of Canada, thus became the champion of his “country”; Bougainville, French-born future navigator and protagonist of the Enlightenment who wrote disparagingly about the colony, was judged on these opinions; while Lévis, a Frenchman who was more discreet in his writings, was evaluated above all as the victor of the battle of Sainte-Foy in 1760.

Low Intensity Conflict: Contemporary Approaches and Strategic Thinking

Searle, Deane January 2007 (has links)
Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) is a significant feature of the contemporary world and it is a particular challenge to the armed forces of many states which are involved is such conflict, or are likely to become so. This thesis is not concerned with how such difficult conflict situations arise. Rather it is concerned with how, from the point of view of the state, they may be contained and ultimately brought to a satisfactory resolution. The work is thus concerned with the practicalities of ending LIC. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to establish a framework of doctrinal and military principles applicable to the prevention and resolution of LIC. The principles of this thesis are based in numerous historical examples of LIC and six in depth case studies. These distilled principles are analysed in two central chapters, and are then applied in two latter defence force chapters so as to ensure there practicality and resilience. Numerous defence academics and military practitioners have been consulted in the production of this thesis; their contribution has further reinforced the functionality of the principles examined in this research. The research illustrates the criticality of a holistic approach to LIC. The function of this approach is to guarantee the stability of the sovereign state, by unifying civil, police, intelligence and military services. The effectiveness of the military elements must also be ensured, as military force is central to the suppression of LIC. Consequently, the research makes strategic and operational prescriptions, so as to improve the capability of defence forces that are concerned with preventing or resolving LIC.
