Alter/Ego: Superhero Comic Book Readers, Gender and Identities

Covich, Anna-Maria Ruth January 2012 (has links)
The academic study of comic books - especially superhero comic books - has predominantly focused on the analysis of these books as texts, as teaching and learning resources, or on children as comic book readers. Very little has been written about adult superhero comic fans and their responses to superhero comics. This thesis explores how adult comic book readers in New Zealand engage with superhero comics. Individual interviews and group conversations, both online and face-to-face, provide insights into their responses to the comics and the characters as well as the relationships among fans. Analysis of fans’ talk about superhero comics includes their reflections on how masculinities are represented in these comics and the complex ways in which they identify with superheroes, including their alter egos. The thesis examines how superhero comic book readers present themselves in their interactions with other readers. Comics ‘geekdom’, fans’ interactions with one another and their negotiation of gendered norms of masculinity are discussed. The contrast between the fan body and the superhero body is an important theme. Readers’ discursive constitution and management of superheroes’ bodies, and their engagement with representations of superheroes are related to analyses of multiplicity in individual identities and current theories of audience reception and identification.

Comic books compose a media that mixes different artistic expressions with communication, creating a vessel through which the reader can be a part of the story, creating scenes, sounds, voices using the dialogues on the balloons, or even making new stories with the characters. However, Comics have suffered, since their inception, with suspicion and devalue if compared with other arts. This research concerns itself with the question: Are Comics a good tool to educate? To address that, I developed a research about the history of the editorial Comics, the readers and the professionals in Brazil. I explored the action of Comics in the different layers of teaching, proposing different activities with Comics in the official grade of regular education. Finally, I present the history of Projeto Mamute (Mammoth's Project) in the period of 2003 - 2005, and the comics we produced within the project, during that period.

One of the centerpieces of that period, the American Superhero, however, was also mobilized to articulate criticism to the George W. Bush’s military campaign in some comics of the time, which also problematized the condition of that mythical figure of mass culture, a recognized nationalist symbol, during an increasingly contested government – by both the domestic population and the global community. This study aims to present the Ex Machina series, by Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris, as a radical example of this production, invoking the methodological support of Discourse Analysis to reveal the corrupt protagonist Mitchell Hundred (or The Great Machine ) – elected mayor of New York City after saving one of the Twin Towers on a reimagined September 11 – not only as a critical reflection of the Bush administration, but a demythifying appropriation of the American Superhero, one that invests itself with a critical view of the constitutive ideology of the superheroic paradigm and shows it as a reproduction of the redemptive and benevolent facade under which the USA imposes its international authority, in alleged missions for world peace, while obscure abuses and controversial geopolitical ambitions.

[en] THE GUTTER READING: AN ANALYSIS OF THE INTERMEDIALITY IN COMICS / [pt] A LEITURA DA SARJETA: UMA ANÁLISE DA INTERMIDIALIDADE DOS QUADRINHOS

ANA LUCIA AMADO SARAIVA RIBEIRO 16 January 2019 (has links)
[en] This research seeks to understand comics as an expression that recreates contents and forms of other arts. In an interdisciplinary perspective, it assumes the approach of intermediality, according to which the relation between the arts is also a relation between media. This research seeks to understand comics as a form of expression that is historically constituted from processes that re-create and re-present the procedures of other arts, such as literature and painting - and not as an autonomous system, whose zones of contact with other arts are mere crosses of well-demarcated frontiers. It is also intended to show that the gutter, as a set-up in comics, offers a privileged angle to think of intermediality, since, in its more experimental and fragmentary uses, it renders less transparent the relation that comics establish with painting and literature This work is composed of two parts: one, theoretical, which consists in the interdisciplinary rescue of part of the available critical fortune on the subject, and another part that constitutes a theoretical experiment in the proposition of the writing of a comic book whose relation with painting and his texts bring to the surface the theme of intermediality, and whose procedures of montage refer to the discussions proposed by the research. The comics manufactured in this research is called Jardim das Sinapses - a biocentric graphic essay, and results from the research work in partnership with the artist and publisher Sergio Manon.

Inappropriate use of medicine is a major threat to public health and can bring consequences such as delays in appropriate treatment or even death. The World Health Organization found that nearly half of drugs consumed worldwide is used improperly, and has warned of the increasing need to broaden the educational aspects related to drugs. This study is structured in the form of articles and being made of three them. This study has its focus directed to the teaching of science and presents a qualitative approach based on numerical data and testimonials obtained from questionnaires and interviews in a semistrutured fashion. Initially, we carried out an analysis of the contents on drugs on Biology texts books for Middle School. The knowledge of students and teachers of IFRJ on the use of drugs was identified, which added to the literature formed the basis for the topics to be addressed in the educational material created (comics). For this thesis an analyze of the impact of the comics created was performed – on the use of drugs and food poisoning – with the target audience. We worked with the application before and after the questioners interventions and semi structured interviews. As a result of the studies we found: 1) the text books analyzed showed that the part related to the contents about the drugs and the contents that address the rational use of drugs need to be suitable to the new legislations. Only thus, can be met the recommendations of the parameters of the Middle School Curriculum; 2) the habitus created in the family sphere in relation to the use of drugs and it social representations are transmitted from generation to generation, and thereby the inappropriate use of drugs is perpetuated and 3) the comics created contributed to the student learning about the risks of the self-medication. Therefore, the results suggest that the teaching of science and scientific publication on the subject with playful didactic materials can contribute to appropriate healthy practices regarding the use of drugs. We expect our work can contribute to the instrumentalization of the scientific issues dissemination related to the health, field enabling teachers to act as facilitators in preventive health actions. Thus, contributing to the promotion of improved quality of life in order to minimize the injuries and damages caused by the misuse of drugs.

Serialita v české a slovenské komiksové naraci. Žánry - modely - světy / Seriality in Czech and Slovak Comics Narration. Genres -Models - Worlds

Kořínek, Pavel January 2015 (has links)
The PhD thesis Seriality in Czech and Slovak Comics Narration. Genres - Models - Worlds intends to deepen our understanding of the historically most prevalent serial form (as in "form of organization") of comics' texts, which phenomenon is here described and further studied building upon the material base of the Czechoslovak comics of the 20th century. At the same time, this seriality is considered here as both the topic of research and its main analytical tool, since the thesis aims to advance our knowledge of history of local comics, as well as to propose seriality-related theoretical tools and concepts. On the historical and interpretative level, the Czechoslovak tradition of comics is conceptualized through its dominant publication-presentation types (comics being presented in the periodicals context) of episodic segments with their strictly limited space/page allowance, with focus on formats and models of periodicity, as well as on genre and composition related topics. Further chapters are dedicated to specific sub-categories of comics narratives (either format-based - comic strip, or genre-oriented - funny animal comics). These not only give an appropriate historical overview of the individual topics, but also serve as the prerequisites for consideration of general, arguably even...

Obraz ženy v japonské populární kultuře. / Image of Woman in Japanese Popular Culture in the 2nd half of the 20th century

Křivánková, Anna January 2016 (has links)
This thesis follows my previous studies of modern Japanese society and popular culture. I will especially focus on gender stereotypes, particularly negative stereotypes concerning women who refuse to bow to a substantial pressure from society endowed with a strong Confucian tradition. It was this very tradition - together with a foreign concept akin to the Western domesticity cult - what gave rise to the ideal of "good wife, wise mother" (rjósai kenbo), which at least in some form remains quite tangible even in contemporary Japanese society. One of the tasks this thesis wants to undertake is to describe how the negative stereotyping of women who stood in either conscious or natural opposition towards this ideal affected portrayal of women in Japanese popular culture (especially comics), which can be a very good perpetuator of all kinds of stereotypes. At the same time, I would like to find out whether it managed to partially subvert at least some of the negative images of women who refused to be good wives and wise mothers. Key words: gender stereotypes, Japan, popular culture, comics, rjósai kenbo, manga

L'entrance des auteurs africains dans le champ de la bande dessinée européenne de langue française (1978-2016) / The Emergence of African Authors in the Comic Field of French-speaking Europe (1978-2016)

Federici, Sandra 16 December 2017 (has links)
This research examines the conditions of possibilities within and the routes of entry of the African authors into the comic field of the French-speaking Europe. The dissertation employs a sociological approach by making, firstly, an institutional analysis of the conditions of production, circulation and reception, as well as the sociability in the local contexts, in particular in the French-speaking countries of sub-Saharan Africa. The examination of the modalities of publication in the edition or in the press, of the associations of authors, festivals and other promotional initiatives, and of the possibilities offered by associations and institutions, shows that local authors have to realize their artistic vocation and their professional projects in poorly organized and unfavourable environments. Of course, this state of things requires agents to exercise their greater or lesser skill in adapting to it and making it play to the advantage of their professional career, but it also prompts a number of authors to consider the publication in the European field as the goal towards which to focus their efforts and strategies. The general problem of entry is the angle of attack of the second part, which draws on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of fields to analyse the trajectories of the few African comics authors who managed to achieve a certain legitimation in European environments, namely Congolese Barly Baruti and Pat Masioni and the Ivorian Marguerite Abouet, as well as some other significant paths. The notions of habitus, strategy, periphery, autonomy and heteronomy, but also antinomy have helped to illuminate these paths. The theory of fields, which emphasizes the social conditions relating to the creation, circulation and consumption of symbolic goods and the institutions involved in the "mise en act" of the artistic-cultural object, in order to understand the position in the society of reference, was instrumental in understanding the importance of several factors: the impact of associations and of the international institutions; autonomy as a second step or eventually as a decisive phase, determining the entrance from the beginning; the “instances of legitimation”

O cruzamento de linguagens e o espaço biográfico na obra de Lourenço Mutarelli / The interlacement of languages and the biographical space in the works by Lourenço Mutarelli

Felipe Crespo de Lima 11 April 2014 (has links)
It addresses two perspectives present in the contemporary writing: 1) the hybridity between several languages and 2) the new styles of the writing of self. As for the first perspective, the dialogism between cinema and literature is privileged, taking into account important questions and discussions concerning the extent to which literature, as being an original work, is indeed superior when compared to the seventh art. In order to analyze some key issues arising from the intertextuality between cinema and literature such as originality, hierarchy and fidelity , this study proposes approaches that seek to explain that, when adapting a literary text, the cinema creates a new work, which is a hybrid one. Thus, it presents new perspectives previously contextualized and consequently inserted at the time of the adaptation, i.e., it brings to the literary text a new view: that of resulting from the director's ideas and experiences. As for the second perspective, observed in present-day context, the exposure of intimacy through varied media blogs, internet websites, reality shows, among others has changed the way authors deal with their own works and readers. The writers seem to create a persona, becoming, quite often, the character of their texts and making use of self-fiction, by blending biographical and fictional elements. This new form of writing of self extending beyond traditional diaries, letters and autobiographies rescues the author from the death" announced by Barthes and brings him/her back as an analysis object of the literary text
