What and how do children learn in the 'DIY: Dream, Innovate Yourself' programme? : a study of a curriculum innovation.

This research is located in the interdisciplinary field of curriculum studies, drawing on both psychological and sociological theories of pedagogy. I explore classroom practice, through a qualitative study into a preparatory school curriculum innovation called DIY: Dream, Innovate Yourself, which encourages children to develop skills (both topic-specific and dispositional) that prepare them for the modern world of business, where flexible thinking, creative problem solving and collaboration are high on the list of ‘hiring qualities’. Using concepts of learning, cognitive and moral development, semiotic mediation, and pedagogy, I develop an analysis of the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of mediation and learning in DIY: Dream, Innovate Yourself. The findings gathered through classroom observation and interviews with learners, suggest that DIY is meeting its intended aims through the programme. However, due to limitations in the data that could be collected, these findings must be treated as preliminary.

The source material for this project was an original screenplay entitled The Birds Work for Bea. Three characters from the material were selected for a process including ideation, research, 2D character and style exploration, 3D sculpting, and 3D printing and finishing. This project serves as a study in all aspects of the character concept development pipeline.

Framtagning av ett mätkonceptsförslag angående mjukhetsmätningen på tissue-papper / Development of a proposal for a measuring concept regarding the softness of tissue-paper

Detta är en förstudie som går ut på att utveckla ett mätkonceptsförslag. Förslaget ska kunna fungera som ett potentiellt fundament för fortsatt arbete för att kunna avgöra mjukheten hos tissue-papper, det vill säga hög-absorberande papper som till stor del används för hygienändamål som exempelvis toalettpapper och servetter. Förslaget ska integreras med mätinstrumentet Syntouch BioTac som är en haptisk sensor samt tryck- och dragprovaren Lloyd LR5K. Kravet för att mätkonceptet ska vara acceptabelt är att det ska vara objektivt samt repeterbart.  En litteraturstudie genomfördes tidigt som resulterade i att författarna insåg att en prototyp behövde konstrueras. Prototypen utvecklades med hjälp av nödvändiga teorier som skulle säkerhetsställa att framtagningen av prototypen gjordes på ett objektivt sätt.  Tre olika typer av tissue-papper valdes ut för att genomgå mätmetoden med den konstruerade prototypen. Mätmetoden genererade data som sedan analyserades med lådagram och dessutom åskådliggjordes testresultatet med grafer. Datan analyserades och resulterade i att förstudien gav författarna ett positivt utslag på frågeställning. Det vill säga att mätkonceptsförslaget uppfyllde objektivitet samt repeterbarhet. / This is a pilot study which involves a development of creating a proposal for a concept that can measure tissue-paper. This study should be able to be used as a fundamental thesis for future studies that will determine the softness of tissue-paper, ergo paper that is highly absorbent of liquids which is frequently used for personal hygiene such as toilet paper and napkins etc. The concept must be integrated with the haptic sensor Syntouch BioTac which is mounted on the push-pull tester Lloyd LR5K. The requirement to make this study successful is that the measuring concept will produce data which not only is objectively created but also repeatable.  The study began with research which resulted with the conclusion that a prototype needed to be created that would make it possible to perform tests on the tissue-papers. Creating the prototype was made possible by using a few necessary theories which would ensure that it would be done accordingly with minimal subjective input.  Three different kinds of tissue-paper were chosen to go through the measuring procedure with the constructed prototype. The data that was obtained from the procedure was then analyzed with boxplots and the test results were also depicted into graphs. The conclusion that was made after analyzing the data was that the authors of this study had obtained a positive verdict according to their issued question. Thus, the measuring concept was presenting objectively and repeatable results.

När landsvägar sopas rent från grus samlas inte alltiddetta upp utan sopas istället ned i diket, vid förekomstav vägräcken ackumuleras gruset över tid undervägräcket. Detta leder till att avrinningen av vattenförsvåras vilket kan leda till att vattenmassor samlas påvägbanan, detta leder till en försämrad trafiksäkerhet.Arbetet med att avlägsna detta grus är idagtidskrävande och leder till att framkomligheten påvägen begränsas. På uppdrag av AB Mählers och Sönerskapades ett produktkoncept som skall kunna utföra ettförebyggande underhåll för att undvika det mertidskrävande arbete som utförs idag. Konceptet byggerpå två stycken roterande sopborstar som med enöverbryggande konstruktion placeras på vardera sidaav vägräcket. Konceptet avses att placeras på ettbefintligt sidoplogfäste som finns i AB Mähler &amp; Sönerexisterande produktutbud. För att ta fram detta koncepthar olika metoder nyttjats: intervjuer med identifieradeintressenter har utförts, befintliga lösningar har söktsoch olika koncept har skapats. De genererade konceptenhar betygsatts och eliminerats tills ett koncept kvarstår.Detta koncept har itererats tre gånger för att söka olikalösningar på problemställningen. / When country roads are swept clean from gravel, thegravel is not always collected, but is instead sweptdown into the trench. How Virtual Reality Impacts the Landscape Architecture Design Process at Various Scales

In the field of landscape architecture, the use of virtual reality (VR) is increasing as a tool for visualization and presentation in the late stages of the design process. Many of the benefits that make VR valuable in the later stages of the design process suggest that VR may also be valuable when used in earlier stages such as analysis and concept development. However, existing research does not provide a detailed study of design within VR during those early stages. Recent advancements in technology allow the potential to bring significant changes in the way that design-related professionals collaborate and design. While the use of VR in design professions is increasing, researching is lacking in addressing the benefits of VR such as what unique capabilities VR provides, what are the limitations in its use, and at what project scales should it be used. This study examines two student design projects to test the impacts of VR when used in the analysis and concept development stages of the design process at both a large master planning scale and a smaller site-design scale. A series of surveys and focus groups were used to gather feedback from participants over several data collection rounds in each project. Participants reported various advantages and disadvantages of utilizing VR in the design process, and the data suggests that VR improved their ability to understand complex issues and relationships and gave them an improved spatial understanding and awareness of the three-dimensional nature of their designs. However, verbal team collaboration proved to be negatively affected by using VR. The results of this research demonstrate the value and benefits of VR as a tool for analysis and concept development while also highlighting weaknesses and areas for improvement. This study suggests a positive outlook for the use of VR as a design tool and demonstrates that it can enhance and effectively be integrated into the early phases of the landscape architecture design process on both large and small project scales.

Background &amp; Problem description: Parents with disabilities affecting their ability to ambulate, like spinal cord injuries, struggle to find knowledge and assistive technology that sufficiently satisfies their needs for support while caring for their children. For parents that use wheelchairs, propelling a stroller to safely and securely transport their child is difficult and currently there are very few products that aim to solve this challenge. Aim: The aim of this project is to identify and understand the challenges and needs of parents who require the use of wheelchairs in relation to independent ambulation with a stroller, and in doing so to develop a concept to meet these needs and challenges. Method: This project achieves this aim by applying a compilation of the Double Diamond approach and the Bootleg Design thinking design approach. The main modes of the design process followed were Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver and Testing. During the Discover stage the information regarding the focus of the project is gathered through an in-depth literature study, a market study and semi structured interviews with potential users. The Define stage focuses on using the information gathered during the preceding stage to revaluate the intended aim and research questions, as well as to create a framework of needs that the design must satisfy and eventually creating a mood board. The Develop stage is the stage in which comprehensive design concepts are generated according to the design framework, these concepts are then evaluated, and initial mock-ups are created. The Deliver and Testing, focuses on constructing prototypes of the concepts chosen for development and evaluating the prototypes according to the design framework in order to measure how well the product may satisfy the needs stipulated in the design framework as well as to discern the perceived value of the product from the perspective of potential users.Results &amp; Conclusion: This project set out to investigate and understand the needs of parents requiring the use of wheelchairs, specifically within the scope of using a stroller, and using the insight gained to develop a concept that satisfies these needs. After reviewing the available literature covering these individuals’ experiences in the context of childcare, it was found that research into the topic is very limited. Through individual contact in the form of informed semi-structured interviews with the target group valuable feedback was collected and a set of base needs was synthesised. These base needs informed the compilation of a design framework which formed the basis of how the concept should function in order to satisfy the needs of its potential users.

TePe Munhygienprodukter AB paketerar en stor andel av sina produkter (interdentalborstar) i blisterförpackningar. Uppdragsgivaren (TePe) ser möjligheten att förbättra en knivbytesprocess som i nuläget påverkar deras produktion av förpackningar negativt, dessutom lever inte processen upp till företagets värdekedja gällande kvalitet, effektivitet och goda arbetsförhållanden.Studien inleds med informationsinsamling rörande knivbytesprocessen, vidare genereras samt utvärderas möjliga konceptlösningar med syfte att uppnå en högre precision vid inmätning av stansknivar, konceptlösningar som skulle göra processen både snabbare och säkrare. Konceptutvecklingsprocessen mynnar ut i ett konceptuellt mätverktyg som konstrueras och simuleras i CAD-programmet Solidworks (Computer aided design). Slutligen tas tillverkningsunderlag fram i form av ritningar. Dessa ritningar kontrolleras av handledaren på TePe för att säkerställa att kraven och önskemålen som ställs på mätverktyget teoretiskt uppfylls.Rekommendationer vid fortsatt arbete är omkonstruktioner av de resterande stansknivspaketenpå TePe, vilka inte undersökts i denna studie, detta för att medge infästning av mätverktyget i även dessa stansknivspaket. När mätverktyget har tillverkats kan funktionstest, dokumentation och utbildning av berörd personal utföras. Utbildningen och dokumentationen är viktig för att uppnå en enhetlig användning av mätverktyget. Syftet med ett enhetligt bruk är att minimera risken för felanvändning som i sin tur kan leda till avvikande mätresultat. / TePe Munhygienprodukter AB packages a large proportion of their products (interdental brushes) in blister packs. The client (TePe) sees the opportunity to improve a knife replacement process that currently affects their production of packaging negatively, in addition, the process does not live up to the company's value chain in terms of quality, efficiency and good working conditions.The study begins with information gathering regarding the knife replacement process, further possible concept solutions are generated and evaluated with the aim of achieving a higher precision when measuring punch knives, concept solutions that would make the process both faster and safer. The concept development process culminates in a conceptual measurement tool that is constructed and simulated in the CAD program Solidworks (Computer aided design). Finally, manufacturing documents are produced in the form of drawings. Thesedrawings are controlled by the supervisor at TePe to ensure that the requirements and wishes set for the measuring tool are theoretically fulfilled.Recommendations for further work are reconstructions of the remaining punch knife packages on TePe, which were not investigated in this study, this to allow attachment of the measuring tool in these punch knife packages as well. Once the measuring tool has been manufactured, functional testing, documentation and training of affected personnel can be carried out. The training and documentation is important to achieve uniform use of the measuring tool. The purpose of uniform use is to minimize the risk of incorrect use, which in turn can lead to deviating measurement results

Utveckling av slanganslutning / Development of a hose connection

Denna rapport presenterar ett examensarbete inom ämnet produktutveckling vid Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan. Arbetet utfördes på uppdrag av företaget Weda AB som tillverkar rengöringslösningar under vatten där en befintlig slanganslutning mellan robot och slang skulle utvecklas. Målet med detta projekt var att vidareutveckla slanganslutningen så att denna avlastar slangen samt konstruera en billigare slanganslutning. Dessa mål presenteras i form av en prototyp samt en prisoffert från underleverantören. Det här projektet har följt den generella produktutvecklingsprocessen där ett behov identifierades vilket var att utveckla slanganslutningen. Därefter togs idéer fram till att tillfredsställa behovet. Idéerna kunde förverkligas genom en fördjupade förståelse i tillverkningsprocessen samt användandet av CAD och simuleringar till att skapa en prototyp. Projektet resulterade i att projektmålen uppfylldes genom att en prisoffert gavs av underleverantören med en prisminskning på ca 35% till slanganslutningen. Det vidareutvecklade konceptet kunde även enligt teorin och prototypen som skapades avlasta slangen genom att slanganslutningen samarbetar i den riktning som slangen dras åt. / This report presents a master thesis within the subject product development in Royal Institute of Technology college. This work was on behalf of Weda AB which manufactures underwater cleaning solutions where existing hose connection between the robot and hose would be developed. The goal with this project was to develop the hose connection so it would relieve the hose, and also be constructed cheaper than the original hose connection. These goals are presented in a terms of a prototype and a price quote from the subcontractor. This project has followed the general product development process where a need was identified to develop the existing hose connection. Ideas were generated to satisfy the need. The ideas were executed by a deeper understandning of the manufacturing process and the using of the CAD and simulation to create a prototype. The project resulted in satisfying the project goals by a price quote given by the subcontractor with a price reduction of 35% by the hose connection. The further developed concept could also by theory and the prototype that was created offload the hose with the hose connection which cooperates in the same direction the hose is being pulled at.

En cykelväska för stora laptops / A bicycle pannier for 17-inch laptops

Examensarbetet utförde i uppdrag från KTH Södertälje med målet att utveckla en cykelväska anpassad för större laptops. Projektet är uppdelad i fyra olika faser problemanalys, faktainsamling, konceptutveckling och rapportskrivning. Problemet med dagens cykelväskor som finns på marknaden idag är att det inte finns någon cykelväska som är anpassad för 17 tum laptops. En faktainsamling utfördes för att få en breddare grund innan viktiga beslut kunde tas inför konceptutvecklingen. 6 olika koncept på togs fram och jämfördes emellan för att hitta det konceptförslags om stod sig starkast och kunde vidareutvecklas till en slutprodukt. Slutprodukten av projektet representeras av en cykelväska som är stor nog att kunna förvara en 17 tum laptop. En cykelväska som uppfyller kundens önskemål att monteringsprocessen av cykelväskan på cykeln ska vara snabb och enkel gjord av ett slittåligt material. Produkten presenteras i form av rendering av en 3D-modellering från CAD programmet CREO. / The degree project was given by KTH Södertälje with the aim to develop a bicycle pannier adapted for larger laptops. The project is divided into four different phases problem analysis, fact collection, concept development and report writing. The problem with today's bicycle pannier that exist on the market today is that there is no bicycle pannier that is adapted and big enough for 17-inch laptops. A fact-gathering was executed in order to obtain a broader basis before important decisions could be made prior to the concept development phase. 6 different concepts were developed and compared between to find the concept that stood out the strongest and could be further developed and used for the end product. The end product of the project is represented by a bicycle pannier large enough to hold a 17 inch laptop. A bicycle bag that meets the customer's wishes which are that the mounting process of the bicycle bag on the bicycle should be quick and easy made of a durable material. The product is presented in the form of rendering of 3D modeling from the CAD program CREO.

Framgångsfaktorer vid konceptutveckling. / Sucess factors at concept development.

Saab Dynamics is a business unit of Saab AB that offers solutions, services and products for military operations. In Saab Dynamics product portfolio the rocket launcher Carl-Gustaf is included. Carl-Gustaf is a portable, recoil free and reusable weapon system. Saab Dynamics also manufactures ammunition to Carl-Gustaf which can be varied between with explosive effect, smoke grenades, illuminating and fine caliber. To respective type of ammunition there is dummy grenades which has the same appearance, weight and loading procedure with the difference that the grenade is inert.  Initiation to the study came from an identified need to update the fuze on Drill Round 545C. The project was made on Saab Dynamics facility in Karlskoga and the purpose was to generate feasible concepts of the fuze, including to generate production documentation of the final concept. Since a concept development process was going to be executed it was considered relevant to investigate how this process should be performed at the company. From this the question at issue has been formulated.  Which success factors can be identified at a concept development process at Saab Dynamics? In addition, a sub-goal with the study is to produce production documentation to the updated fuze of Drill Round 545C according to ISO 22081 and manufacture a physical prototype.  The study is split into two parts, a qualitative study with purpose of answering the issue, and a concept study with purpose to produce the final prototype. Through interviews with employees and a literature study, success factors have been identified. A total of five success factors was found, together with some specific situations where they have significant matter. The success factors are: Communication, Group Composition, Openness in the group, Process fitted according to the specific project and Focus on boundaries between sub-projects. The concept study was performed through a systematical method for construction and design, with distinct activities and decision points. Four concepts were generated from the method, where all of them was manufactured through additive manufacturing and tested. All of the concepts fulfilled the requirements and by decision matrixes a final concept was decided. From the chosen concept a physical prototype and production documentation was created. This concept fulfilled the set goals and thereby the result of the concept study is assumed successful. Reflections were made after the concept study regarding the success factors, as some of them would have positively affected the concept development process. In future investigations, evaluations of the current working methods at Saab Dynamics are recommended as this study had limitations to not evaluate these. The report also emphasizes the importance of spreading the knowledge and experience that exists, as a possible area of improvement. / Saab Dynamics är ett affärsområde inom Saab AB, som erbjuder lösningar, tjänster och produkter för militär verksamhet. Projektet utfördes på Saab Dynamics i Karlskoga, där syftet var att ta fram flera genomförbara koncept för tändrörsattrappen samt att ta fram tillverkningsunderlag för ett slutgiltigt koncept. Eftersom det skulle utföras en konceptutvecklingsprocess ansågs det också relevant att undersöka hur denna typ av process bör utföras inom företaget. Utifrån detta har det formulerats en frågeställning samt ett delmål med studien.  Vilka framgångsfaktorer går att identifiera vid en konceptutvecklingsprocess på Saab Dynamics? Dessutom ska studien ta fram tillverkningsunderlag till den uppdaterade tändrörsattrappen enligt ISO 22081 samt tillverka en fysisk prototyp.   tudien har delats upp i två delar, en kvalitativ studie med syfte att svara på frågeställningen samt en konceptstudie med syfte att ta fram den slutgiltiga prototypen. Genom att intervjua anställda med erfarenhet av konceptutveckling på Saab Dynamics och kombinera detta med en litteraturstudie har framgångsfaktorer identifieras. Resultatet av studien innebär att fem framgångsfaktorer identifierats samt några specifika situationer då de har väsentlig betydelse. Framgångsfaktorerna är: Kommunikation, Gruppsammansättning, Öppenhet inom gruppen, Process anpassad för det specifika projektet och Fokus på gränsytor mellan delprojekt. Konceptstudien utfördes enligt en systematisk metod för konstruktion och design med tydliga aktiviteter och beslutspunkter. Utifrån metoden genererades fyra koncept som tillverkades med additiv tillverkning och testades. Samtliga av koncepten uppfyllde funktionskraven och beslutsmatriser användes för att identifiera ett slutgiltigt koncept. Utifrån det valda konceptet tillverkades en fysisk prototyp och tillverkningsunderlag. Konceptet uppfyllde kraven som ställdes och därmed anses resultatet från konceptstudien lyckat. Dessutom kunde reflektioner angående framgångsfaktorerna dras efter konceptstudien då de hade påverkat genomförandet av konceptutvecklingsprocessen positivt.  I framtida studier rekommenderas utvärdering av de aktuella arbetssätt på Saab Dynamics då denna studie hade avgränsningar att inte analysera dem. Rapporten betonar även vikten av att sprida de kunskaper och erfarenheter som finns inom företaget som ett eventuellt förbättrings-område.
