Understanding Educational Choice Processes of Retired Professional Hockey Players

Donnelly, Jilian K. January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the processes and influences that underlie the choice of retired elite athletes to further their education and assume the adult learner role. In the current study, focus was applied specifically to professional ice hockey players who were in a period of retirement from active play. Elite athletes often retire at a time when most other professions are just beginning or reaching a level of stability. Research suggests that many retired elite athletes experience a difficult transition to an early retirement from athletics that is fraught with depression and unemployment. A select number of these elite athletes choose to further their educations after their careers have expired. The literature suggests that some of these retired elite athletes find educational programming a valuable coping strategy in the often traumatic post-athletic career adjustment. Unfortunately, this choice is made by only few athletes. It would be desirable to encourage more retired athletes to consider and engage in educational activities; however, currently, there is only very little knowledge on the processes underlying athletes' choice to participate, or not to participate, in education in their retirement years. Using a theoretical framework that includes adult learning theory and adult development theory, in conjunction with expectancy-value theory of motivation, the impact of individual characteristics and environmental opportunities on post-athletic career choices made by professional athletes may be better understood. The primary instrument for data collection was a personal interview with ten retired professional hockey players, conducted over a consecutive six-month period resulting in significant data. Utilizing the constant-comparative method for data analysis, common themes were identified as indicators of educational engagement: Informal Mentorship, Head Injury Related Retirement, and Pre-Transition Planning. In addition to these themes, the findings reflected an alternative adult developmental model possibly unique to professional hockey players. The findings of this study are valuable to the larger conversation regarding adult learners, adult development, and elite athlete career transition. / Educational Administration

In a football bubble: Cultural transition narratives of Swedish elite football players

Söderlund, Ellinor January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate cultural transition experience in elite football. More specifically, to explore three Swedish football players experience of their first transition abroad when relocating to play professional football in Europe. A narrative inquiry approach was used, with help of the cultural transition model (Ryba, Stambulova, & Ronkainen, 2016) a semi-structured interview guide was created. The cultural transition model was also used as a lens for analyzing the data. The participants were non-randomly sampled and recruited with help from the Swedish Football Federation. Four players responded positively and initiated the interview, three was fully conducted while one dropped out. The data were analyzed with holistic-content and categorical-content analysis to show three unique pathways but also common themes of their cultural transitions. The first result showed the uniqueness of the players pathways; preparing for the worst and saved by the football bubble, taking responsibility and a key role as a foreign player to gain respect in the team, and a big step for personal development: from homesickness to being hungry for more. Secondly, the result showed that the participant shared experience in the cultural transition process which are presented in 12 themes (e.g. Pre-transition phase: satisfaction in Swedish club before leaving, Acute cultural adaptation phase: adjustment in football as first priority in host culture, and Sociocultural adaptation: perceived ability and efficacy to adjust to new cultural settings). In conclusion, adaptation in football was prioritized during the first period of relocation, that means that they fully invested to show that they were good. However, after this first phase, having a meaningful life besides football became one of the most important things to feel satisfied. Although there are still questions unanswered regarding cultural transition in elite football, implications to Swedish Football Federation were given in further working with professional players who go abroad.

LIVED EXPERIENCES OF RECENTLY TRANSITIONED ENGINEERING MANAGERS: AN INTERPRETIVE QUALITATIVE STUDY

Swetha Nittala (9749255) 15 December 2020 (has links)
<p>Developing engineering talent in organizations has long been an issue for industries. Notably, with rapidly changing business models and flattened organizational structures, engineers are required to transition into managerial and leadership roles more quickly than ever before. Yet engineers and employers alike often characterize this as a difficult transition. Further, there remains a lack of empirical research on the nature of engineering managerial work practices. To address these issues, this dissertation aims to holistically uncover the experiences of recently transitioned engineering managers. Specifically, the study investigates the meaning-making and experiences of the participants’ transitional journeys and also addresses related questions such as what changes and challenges they face during the transition and how they navigate the challenges associated with the transition. The study is examined through the lens of work-role transition frameworks and models that emphasize the role of the individual in the transition.</p> <p>In order to address the research objectives, an interpretive qualitative study is employed. To explore and understand the lived experiences of recently transitioned engineering managers, I conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 newly transitioned engineering managers at a Telecom firm in the United States. The interviews were then used to develop narrative accounts of participants describing their journeys of transition. The interviews were also analyzed thematically to identify: a) specific patterns in how the participants experience and make sense of their transition to engineering managerial roles; b) changes experienced by engineers during the transition; c) challenges faced by engineers as they transition to managerial roles, and d) new skills developed by participants to navigate the transition. </p> <p>The findings suggest that most engineers struggled with the transition, especially during the early stages. This difficulty in part stems from the various personal changes that they experience as a result of the transition, changes related to their individual cognitive, physiological, and social aspects. Moreover, the transition experiences are also impacted by both the situational factors of the individual (e.g., demographics, career progression) as well as the organizational factors, including HR policies related to training and development, dual pathway offerings, etc. The findings in this study, in part presented as narratives, are expected to contribute to the field of engineering education and practice by providing insights into the experiences of engineering professionals taking up managerial and leadership roles. More specifically, the narratives are expected to serve as examples and provide inspiration for engineers at a variety of career stages. The thematic findings are also expected to help students, engineering educators, engineering leadership faculty, and industry affiliates understand and improve the managerial transition process and associated role expectations, which for the most part, remain largely unexplored. </p>

Mellegård, Olivia January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study is to describe the experience of social support among female elite athletes who combine handball with higher education, with the underlying purpose to describe these persons’ experience of the functions of the support. These functions are materialistic, informative and emotional. There are ten women in the ages 22 to 24 (M=23.1, S=0,83) participating in the study. The study uses a semi-structured interview, based on two articles that studied social support (Knight et al., 2018; Schaefer et al., 1981). The result was sorted in three categories: emotional support, materialistic support and informative support. The result showed that women experienced emotional support, especially affinity, in the dual career (DC). Materialistic support was experienced in terms of support thru adjustment from coach and university. However, materialistic support was also identified lacking. Lastly, informative support, in shape of information and guidance in dual career, was experienced missing.

Reveau, Maëlle 05 1900 (has links)
Career transition is a phenomenon inherent in the performing arts and particularly in the circus arts. The often constrained nature of the career transition and the difficulty for those who undertake it, are considered major issues for all circus actors. However, few studies have looked at the dynamics of career transition in the circus arts. At the time when the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing employers to suspend circus performances, the reflection on a possible professional reorientation comes earlier in their career in comparison to artists who worked before the pandemic. In January 2021, 94% of circus artists considered having another career, according to the national grouping of circus arts En Piste. Highlighting the factors of the artistic profession that lead circus artists to undertake a career transition, is what this original research offers. Thus, we conducted a qualitative survey including 14 Cirque du Soleil artists. We have observed, heeded and comprehended the representations and perceptions of artists regarding their career. During the interviews conducted between January and November 2020, we collected valuable and revealing data to identify the main triggers for this transition. We have thus shown that artists leave the scene relatively early in their career. The combination of several factors such as the chronology over time, the risk of injury which increases by age, the very particular working conditions of circus artists, the work / family balance, the self-exclusion of women in comparison to their peers, the emotional exhaustion or even the exceptional context of COVID-19, contribute to the fact that artists leave the scene relatively early in their professional artistic pathway. Thus, this work aims to understand the work of circus artists who have made a career transition or are about to make it.

Studentidrottares upplevelser: krav, barriärer, resurser och hantering i deras dubbla karriärer : En kvalitativ intervjustudie / Student-athletes' experiences: demands, barriers, resources and coping in dual careers : A qualitative interview study

Törnblom, Nellie January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate student-athletes' experiences of having a dual career and what demands, barriers and resources they experience and how they manage the demands. The selection was eight student athletes divided into seven women and one man, aged 20-35. The present study had a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews, where the interview guide and the subsequent thematic analysis of the results were based on the Career Transition Model (Stambulova, 2003) and a holistic perspective based on the Holistic athletic career model (Wylleman, 2019). The analysis resulted in four main themes with associated sub-themes and sub-themes. It was the student-athletes' perceived demands, barriers, resources and the student-athletes' effective coping. The results show that the student-athletes experience both internal and external demands where there is a constant focus on high performance, which is perceived as stressful. Internal barriers as well as the external barriers, which are divided into limited time and negative consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, interact in relation to the perceived resources. The internal assets consist of purposefulness, experience of the combination of studies and sports, and two identities instead of one. The external assets consists of financial support, increased flexibility with distance studies and benefiting from other students. The perceived coping, in turn, contains three different strategies that are used in different ways by the student-athletes to cope with their dual careers. The problem-focused coping involved careful planning to piece together the life puzzle, where the emotion-focused coping dealt with mental and physical recovery, where also avoidant coping was part of the experience.

Det flexibla arbetslivetspåverkan på människor : En nyfiken vägledares utforskande av människors reaktioner påomställningar / The effect of the flexible working life : a curious counsellor’s exploration of people´s reactions to involuntary worktransitions

Eriksson, Backa Katarina January 2023 (has links)
The aim of the study is to contribute to a deeper understanding of how people are emotionally affectedby, and manage, work transitions that have been forced upon them in their professional life. From theperspective of guidance counsellors, this is an important question, given that the current labour marketis in flux, and given the fact that the focus on ‘life-long learning’ means that counsellors will in alllikelihood find themselves working increasingly with people at various points in career transition.Seven individuals with considerable experience of such work transitions have been interviewed. In theanalysis, the results have been studied from different perspectives based on theories of basic emotions, theories of crisis, sorrow and development and the Planned Happenstance career theory. The resultscontain several examples of reactions and approaches that involuntary work transitions can lead to.With a deeper understanding of these, counsellors can acquire an important pedagogical role in theirinteractions with clients dealing with career transition.
