Tradition, Erudition and the Book: Aspects of the Bollandist-Carmelite Controversy, with a Critical Edition of the Pamphlet Novus Ismael (1682 & 1683), Including Translation and Commentary

Letsinger, Robert B. January 2009 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Between 1675 and 1698 more than 60 published works, ranging from ephemera – pamphlets, scurrilous libelli, dialogues, letters and articles – to multi-part volumes in-folio, were printed by the participants in a dispute over the antiquity of the origins of the Carmelite order. Though the broad contours of the quarrel between the Carmelites and Antwerp Jesuits who were their main adversaries is well known, it has yet to be analyzed in any significant detail. The following study undertakes such an analysis, first reconstructing the origins of the quarrel in the religious houses and print shops of Antwerp, next looking at the Carmelite perspective and the "argument from tradition" which buttressed the Carmelites' claims to antiquity, and lastly tracing the history of the "erudition" which allowed the Bollandists -- the Jesuit scholars responsible for that monument of hagio-historiography known as the Acta Sanctorum -- to mount their critique. An appendix presents a critical edition and translation of one of the better-known anti-Bollandist pamphlets, Novus Ismael.

The cutout temporal adopted is justified by the foundation of this mission in Córrego do Bom Jesus and Cambui in 1911 and goes until 1922 when the house of Cambuí is closed and the teresianos left the south of the Minas Gerais State. In this period of more than a decade, several interventions of the Discalced Carmelites are realized in these two communities and they are associated with the attempt of introduction of the directives of the ultramontane reform of the Church in Brazil, taking the present reformative project as a base in the new Diocese of PousoAlegre. Inserted in this new configuration of the Brazilian Catholicism, the teresianos will devote themselves the attempt of gradual substitution of a not much austere, festive, social, familiar religious practice and in a large extent lay for the Roman and reformed Catholicism which emphasis falls back on the sacraments. We intend to study the presence of the teresianos in these parishes considering as the relations between the imposed forms of the ultramontane Catholicism and the identities always reaffirmed by the present laymen in the rites and experts of the local religiosity. The main used fountains were extracted of the illustrated magazine of the Order of the Discalced Carmelites, Il Carmelo, of the book of conservation of these parishes, of the manuscript Appunti Storici della nostra missione nel Brasile, of the catholic newspaper Tribuna Sul Mineira, of the Collective Pastorals of 1911 and 1915, the book Actas y Decretos del Concilio Plenario de la América Latina and other documents found in the Archdiocese of Pouso Alegre, in the archive of the Province São José of the Discalced Carmelites (at São Paulo), in the Curia Generalizia of the Order and in the archive of the Roman Province, both in Rome. We point that this reformative project begun before the arrival of the Order, prepared series of interventions with the objective to control and to discipline the local cultural practices considered profane that intensified in the period comprised by the current inquiry, project that stayed far from achieving all its goals / A presente pesquisa estuda o processo de Reforma Ultramontana do catolicismo brasileiro, através da atuação da Ordem dos Carmelitas Descalços da Província Romana, nas paróquias sul mineiras de Cambuí e do Senhor Bom Jesus do Córrego no período de 1911 até 1922.

The dissertation has as main objective to analyze the Carmelite baroque historical culture, through the meaning of the allegories of Our Lady of Carmel Church, builded in the colonial City of Paraíba. The methodology is assented in the images analysis proposed by Erwin Panofsky in his book Meaning in the visual arts. An iconological interpretation of the images in Portuguese tiles and walls and roof paintings is done, in order to understand which behavior model was expected to be followed by the Christians in the 18th-century City of Paraíba. In such a way, the allegories are understood as doctrinal tools made to teach the Christian the Carmelite historical culture, in an attempt to conduct the prayer to salvation. The research integrates the local historical context during the church construction, in the second half of 18th century, the birth and spread of Baroque art in the Europe in the ends of 16th century and the History of the Carmelite Order.

A small adjective attending light, the archangelic noun : Jessica Powers: a modern metaphysical poet / Jessica Powers: a modern metaphysical poet

Prozesky, Stellamarie Bartlette 2013 April 1900 (has links)
This thesis aims to establish Jessica Powers (1905 – 1988) as a metaphysical poet, to augment the composite definition of metaphysical poetry, and to add two emphases to Christian literary theory. A comprehensive library search on Powers reveals that no scholarly work has been written on her poetry since 2005. A meta-analysis of existing work on Powers demonstrates that the metaphysical aspect of her poetry has not yet been comprehensively examined. Though Powers wrote in a time commonly called ‘post-modern’, my contention is that it would be more accurate to describe her as a metaphysical poet in the traditional sense of that term, as used, for example, of George Herbert (1593 – 1633). I endorse the view that the central theme of all metaphysical poetry is the relation between body and soul (Tanenbaum 2002: 211). It will be seen that this relation is the central concern of Powers’ metaphysical poetry. My close reading of Powers’ work as metaphysical is according to a Christian literary theory which agrees with Hass ‘that the study of the text and textual hermeneutics in the twenty-first century will continue because of a particular resurgence of religion’ (2007: 856). It is augmented by two emphases, a scientific (based on Gallagher’s 2009 study of the neurophysiology of attention), and a philosophical (based on Fromm’s 1976 analysis of the ‘being mode’, and on Buber’s 1947 analysis of attentiveness to the present moment). My study thereby contributes to Christian literary theory. There are one hundred and eighty two poems in The Selected Poetry of Jessica Powers. This thesis refers, to greater or lesser extents, to one hundred and seventy six of the poems, and comprehensive examination of their metaphysical aspect is the primary focus of the thesis. My examination of the poems demonstrates that Powers’ poetry can justly be described as metaphysical, which definition of her work serves to highlight an important and hitherto neglected aspect of her work, that she is a metaphysical poet of the finest calibre, and that renewed attention to her work is timely. / English Studies / D. A Colombian Nun and the Love of God and Neighbour : The Spiritual Path of María de Jesús (1690s-1776) / En Colombiansk Nunna och Kärleken till Gud och till Nästan : María de Jesús (ca 1690-1776) Andliga Väg

Cadavid Yani, Helwi Margarita January 2016 (has links)
María de Jesús (1690s-1776) was a white-veiled Discalced Carmelite nun of the San José convent in Santa Fe de Bogotá, founded in 1606. She professed in the year 1714, and her spiritual journal was printed in a chronicle about the convent in the 1940s. The aim of this study is to examine the love of God and of neighbour, as expressed in the spiritual journal of María de Jesús. In this study I will proceed from the understanding of love as charity. In Christian thought God Himself is love, and its source. Charity, the third, and greatest, of the theological virtues, is a state of being in and responding to God’s love and favour. This way of loving consists in loving God wholeheartedly and loving our neighbour as ourselves. Included in loving our neighbour are acts related to his or her spiritual benefit and salvation. These are all present themes in María de Jesús’ text, but my aim is to examine how she incorporates these themes in her spiritual testimony by analyzing the imagery she uses, and the affective language in her spiritual journal. I will also seek to understand her way of writing by analyzing her text against the background of the tradition of women’s spiritual writings. Being a Discalced Carmelite, it will also be interesting to discover the Teresian presence in María de Jesus’ text, i.e. the influence of her predecessor and the reformer of the order, Teresa of Ávila (1515- 1582). I suggest that this can be noticed in certain rhetorical techniques. I also aim to examine if there are any similarities and differences in their expressions of love of God and of neighbour.

Die Mainzer Karmelitenbibliothek

Ottermann, Annelen 30 September 2015 (has links)
The subject of this study is the reconstruction and analysis of the Mainz Carmelite library from the beginning of the 15th century (documentation of the earliest archival material) until the closure of the convent as a result of the secularisation in 1802. Lacking a catalogue and considering the existence of only few documents, the research project is mainly based on the surving copies once belonged to the convent: until today are registered 1589 copies with the provenance „Mainz Carmelites“, including 39 manuscripts and 289 incunables and early printed books until 1520. The study intends to be a contribution for the reconstruction of monastic libraries with the aim to unify surviving fragmentary collections. The known copies of the former Carmelite library have been looked into for their bibliographic and copy-specific records in order to get an idea of the intellectual and spiritual knowledge. Provenance research based on both personal as well as institutional ownership was done, including also information on circulation, acquisition and handling of the material in and outside monastic life.

Art, devotion and patronage at Santa Maria dei Carmini, Venice : with special reference to the 16th-Century altarpieces

Hammond, Joseph January 2011 (has links)
This study is an art history of Santa Maria dei Carmini, Venice, from its foundation in c. 1286 to the present day, with a special focus on the late Renaissance period (c. 1500-1560). It explores a relatively overlooked corner of Renaissance Venice and provides an opportunity to study the Carmelite Order's relationship to art. It seeks to answer outstanding questions of attribution, dating, patronage, architectural arrangements and locations of works of art in the church. Additionally it has attempted to have a diverse approach to problems of interpretation and has examined the visual imagery's relationship to the Carmelite liturgy, religious function and later interpretations of art works. Santa Maria dei Carmini was amongst the largest basilicas in Venice when it was completed and the Carmelites were a major international order with a strong literary tradition. Their church in Venice contained a wealth of art works produced by one of the most restlessly inventive generations in the Western European tradition. Chapter 1 outlines a history of the Carmelites, their hagiography and devotions, which inform much of the discussion in later chapters. The second Chapter discusses the early history of the Carmelite church in Venice, establishing when it was founded, and examining the decorative aspects before 1500. It demonstrates how the tramezzo and choir-stalls compartmentalised the nave and how these different spaces within the church were used. Chapter 3 studies two commissions for the decoration of the tramezzo, that span the central period of this thesis, c. 1500-1560. There it is shown that subjects relevant to the Carmelite Order, and the expected public on different sides of the tramezzo were chosen and reinterpreted over time as devotions changed. Cima da Conegliano's Adoration of the Shepherds (c. 1511) is discussed in Chapter 4, where the dedication of the altar is definitively proven and the respective liturgy is expanded upon. The tradition of votive images is shown to have influenced Cima's representation of the donor. In Chapter 5 Cima's altarpiece for the Scuola di Sant'Alberto's altar is shown to have been replaced because of the increasing ambiguity over the identification of the titulus after the introduction of new Carmelite saints at the beginning of the century. Its compositional relationship to the vesperbild tradition is also examined and shown to assist the faithful in important aspects of religious faith. The sixth chapter examines the composition of Lorenzo Lotto's St Nicholas in Glory (1527-29) and how it dramatises the relationship between the devoted, the interceding saints and heaven. It further hypothesises that the inclusion of St Lucy is a corroboration of the roles performed by St Nicholas and related to the confraternity's annual celebrations in December. The authorship, date and iconography of Tintoretto's Presentation of Christ (c. 1545) is analysed in Chapter 7, which also demonstrates how the altarpiece responds to the particular liturgical circumstances on the feast of Candlemas. The final chapter discusses the church as a whole, providing the first narrative of the movement of altars and development of the decorative schemes. The Conclusion highlights the important themes that have developed from this study and provides a verdict on the role of ‘Carmelite art' in the Venice Carmini.
