Study of dielectric properties of the Bismuth Titanate Niobate, [Bi3TiNbO9 (BTNO)], doped with PbO and Bi2O3 for applications in antennas

Roger Ribeiro Silva 19 February 2009 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / Dielectric resonators based on type structure compound Bi3TiNbO9 show singular characteristics for microwave applications, including high dielectric constants, low dissipation losses and low temperature coefficients. Single phase of the Bi3TiNbO9 powder was obtained by x-ray diffraction technique. The ceramics doped during manufacture, with lead oxide and bismuth oxide, were synthesized by solid state reaction at 950ÂC for two hours. Samples were analysed by Archimedes method and exhibited good levels of density for doped ceramics with bismuth and lead oxide. Grain morphology and stoichiometry of ceramics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy technique. Far infrared spectroscopy identified large bands on the Bi3TiNbO9 structure by attenuated total reflection technique. Radiofrequency measurements showed that doped ceramics exhibited higher dielectric constants than pure phase. Microwave measurements were investigated by Hakki-Coleman and resonant cylindrical cavity. The ceramics called as BTNO3BiP, BTNO5BiP, BTNO10BiP, BTNO3PbG e BTNO5PbG, showed high dielectric constants and high quality factors demonstrating that they can be applied in dielectric antennas on microwave range.

Social capital and educational achievement in the Republic of Korea

An, Sera January 2014 (has links)
The current global environment is vibrant, volatile and highly competitive. Many developing societies and emerging economies are seeking to establish ways in which they can gain advantages at the international level but also lay the basis for strong societies with exemplary economic, social and moral foundations. Towards this end, these countries are investing energies in building a skilled citizenry and socially mobile, achievement-driven, populations. One such society is the rapidly changing Republic of Korea. One of the catalysts for change in Korea has been argued to be education. Educational access has been linked to changes in economic status and to potentially the undermining of inequality and flattening of class hierarchies. Some authors argue that Korea has been gripped by an ‘education fever’ and others argue that persisting educational inequalities reflect differences largely in terms of social capital – rather than economic capital. This thesis uses quantitative survey methodology to explore differences in the educational achievement of Korean high school students. Eleventh (11th) grade students in three ‘achieving schools’ with varied characteristics were subjects of the study. The purpose was to establish the factors driving achievement in these schools. It was believed that the identification of various factors which influence high achievement on the part of some students might offer insight into how low achievement can be addressed and the base of exceptional educational achievement broadened. Parents and teachers were also respondents in this study. Social capital and its physical, relational, structural, and cognitive dimensions present the conceptual and analytical tools of the study. These concepts were explored in terms of the ideas of the founding theorists – Bourdieu, Coleman and Putnam – and applied to three different domains: family, school and community. The findings suggest that high achievement is linked centrally to familial social capital. Boarding school, whether students who live at home have both parents present, and mothers collecting information from school serve as significant determinants of achievement. Together, Korean mothers and fathers can and do carve important outcomes when they are actively engaged in their children’s learning. As far as school social capital is concerned, physical background and public school status were deemed important. Residential district was the most significant component of community social capital. At a theoretical level, the study finds Coleman’s arguments most relevant in the Korean context, in particular his views on parental involvement and socio-economic status and the ways in which networks of trust and reciprocity augment achievement. The study makes an original contribution in the way it adapts theory and builds novel evidence in the Korean context. The study concludes with a list of key recommendations. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / tm2015 / Sociology / DPhil / Unrestricted

Asian Indian Mothers’ Involvement in Their Children’s Schooling: An Analysis of Social and Cultural Capital

Chanderbhan-Forde, Susan 25 June 2010 (has links)
This qualitative study utilized concepts drawn from the theories advanced by Coleman (1988) and Pierre Bourdieu (1987) to examine the extent to which Asian Indian mothers utilize embodied cultural capital and social capital (specifically social norms and social networks) in their engagement in their children's education. Using interviews with 12 Asian Indian mothers whose children were enrolled in a large urban school district in West Central Florida, the study examined their beliefs about the value of education, the origin of those beliefs, their roles in their children's education, family and community norms surrounding education, and how they utilized social networks to assist them in negotiating the American public school system. Several themes emerged from the interviews. Mothers' habitus included a view of education as critical to building a secure future for their children. They attributed their strong emphasis on education to personal experiences within their own families and particular historical and local conditions present within Indian society, including a history with colonialism, overpopulation, and a very competitive schooling system. Mothers' habitus also included playing an extremely active role in their children's educations, including extensive academic supplementing of the American curriculum. Academic supplementing was based on both their perceptions of a lack of rigor in the American elementary school curriculum and their belief in the importance of continuous learning for children. How participants' habitus likely functioned as embodied capital in interaction with schools is discussed. Participants reported that norms about education in the larger Asian Indian community included an emphasis on educatio as central priority in the lives of children as well as competitiveness around academics. They indicated that this competitiveness had both positive and negative effects on children. Partly due to their lack of knowledge about the American school system, mothers reported extensive use of co-ethnic social networks to access information that they used to help them support their children's educational success. They discussed how the composition of these networks limited their usefulness and how they sought knowledgeable outsiders to compensate for these weaknesses. Implications of the findings for researchers are discussed and suggestions for future research are offered.

Frijazz äntrar scenen : Något nytt som skapar debatt och dess plats i den svenska jazzdiskursen / Free jazz enters the scene : Something new that generated debate and its place in the Swedish jazz narrative

Jansson, Fredrik January 2019 (has links)
When a new type of jazz, later often referred to as free jazz, entered the Swedish jazz scene at the time when the 1950s became the 1960s, an intense debate occurred within the Swedish jazz community. A debate between those in favor of the new style, its expressions and the direction in which jazz was moving towards in general, versus those who disliked this new development, thought that it was too extreme and was not in line with the traditions of jazz. This essay will bring this debate to light and analyze different aspects of it, with a similar controversy in mind which took place at the time of the arrival of bebop, approximately fifteen years earlier. The primary aim is to integrate free jazz into the Swedish jazz narrative, something that has been neglected in earlier research. Through discourse analysis, contemporary thoughts and values are brought to the surface. In part to better understand how and why these different opinions came to be, but above all, if they were part of other contemporary discussions, strives and struggles within the Swedish jazz community. The findings point towards the fact that free jazz played an important role in both the contemporary Swedish jazz discourse and the development of jazz at large. Free jazz expanded the spectrum of expression within the genre and helped jazz in general to reach a status of high culture, a strive that had existed for a long time.

Mikroprimstellen für p-adische Zahlkörper

Wirl, Ernst Ludwig 14 February 2011 (has links)
Micro primes were introduced by J. Neukirch in the context of abstract class field theory. A generalization of decomposition groups of primes of global fields led him to a purely group theoretical definition of micro primes as certain equivalence classes of Frobenius elements. Applied to the case of Galois groups of local or global fields this theory yields a description of special conjugacy classes. The main problem already posed by J. Neukirch is to understand the number theoretical meaning of micro primes, that is to describe them in terms of the base field. J. Mehlig and E.-W. Zink established a bijection between micro primes and norm compatible sequences of prime elements in field towers. These towers arise as fixed point fields for the sequence of derived subgroups of the inertia group. So one has to study micro primes for the corresponding factor groups of the absolute Galois group and then to form a projective limit. In the first step, a bijection between relative micro primes and conjugacy classes of prime elements has been obtained. The main result of this project is a complete answer to the problem of J. Neukirch for the second step. One has to introduce norm maps between Lubin-Tate power series of different height and the projective limit has to be taken with respect to these norm maps. For this purpose results from class field theory are transferred to an ''''almost abelian'''' case. In the end micro primes can be described as Galois orbits of norm compatible sequences of normic Lubin-Tate power series. The coefficients of all the Lubin-Tate power series are in finite unramified extensions of the base field. Therefore one can define a field of coefficients for a given norm compatible sequence of normic Lubin-Tate power series. The degree of that field respectively the length of the Galois orbit is at the same time the degree of the corresponding micro prime.
