Given free rein this might be getting out of hand : A qualitative study about collection development and librarians’ views of their professionLagerskog, Jennifer, Nordmark, Solveig January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate how collection development implemented in a changed media landscape affects the professional identity of librarians. The study is based on three questions: Which problems, quandaries or possibilities are librarians experiencing in collection development? What does the idealistic view of collection development look like - and how does it relate to librarians’ actual work? How does all these factors related to collection development affect the profession of librarianship? Former research indicates that collection development is not that uncomplicated, and it discusses all kinds of practical issues. There is though a lack of former research in the relationship between collection development and profession, which is the aim of this investigation taking place in small public libraries in the north of Sweden. To answer our questions six librarians were interviewed in a ”semi-structured” way. In the analysis we applied Roger Säljös construction of the sociocultural theory and related it´s concepts to lines of reasoning in our result. The results and analysis showed that in the current media landscape there are many factors and considerations affecting the collection development process. First there are fundamental documents and policies, written based on the democratic mission of the library and then, because there is a certain ambiguity in the directives, there are the librarians’ interpretations, which sometimes might be based on personal ideologies. All this in combination with failing collection development tools forces the librarians into a certain controlling role.

Managing electronic resources at selected tertiary institutions in the Western Cape, South AfricaSikhosana, Regina Balengane January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. / The aim of this research study is to explore the management of electronic resources used in libraries. Three tertiary institutions were used as case studies. The unit of analysis was the three libraries, with library employees (14) working and managing electronic resources being the unit of observation. Non-random, purposive sampling techniques were used. The finding of this study suggests that the participants do not use the Aleph integrated library system (ILS) optimally to manage electronic resources. Library employees do not keep up with current and new emerging technology trends in the library and academic environment. There is a lack of training, as well as understanding, of business processes and workflows. This is emphasised by a lack of knowledge of library system environments and, finally, the high cost of implementing the library systems. Electronic resource management (ERM) systems emerged in the early 2000s, and it became clear that traditional integrated library systems did not have sufficient capacity to provide efficient processing for meeting the changing needs and challenges of libraries at tertiary institutions. Libraries find it challenging to manage the wide range of licensed electronic resources, collaborating, cooperating and sharing resources with different libraries. The increasing number of electronic resource demands from users for remote or off campus access makes it difficult for libraries to manage electronic resources. As a result of this inability to manage the electronic resources, libraries are not effectively and efficiently using appropriate electronic resource systems to meet their business requirements.

The Evolution of the Library Media Center: A Study of the Past, Current, and Projected Future Library Services Available in Johnson City, TennesseeHawley, Johnnie Sue 01 May 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study was to indicate changes in library services available to the citizens of Johnson City, Tennessee. The study covered library services available in educational and public settings for patrons from preschool to adult ages. Librarians in this study all worked in either a public library located in Johnson City, TN or worked in the Johnson City School System as a media specialist in either an elementary, middle, or high school.
This qualitative study was conducted using interviews of librarians to gain their perceptions of the library and their roles within the libraries of Johnson City. Librarians were interviewed to determine their views in the past, present, and future of the library as an establishment. Documents from the various libraries were also analyzed to determine changes in library services.
Various themes emerged from the data analysis. Participants discussed their roles as librarians, the library as an institution, and collection development. Other themes that emerged were discussions of library materials that were now or would become archaic. Participants also made projections as to the future of the library itself and whether or not it would become obsolete.
The results of this study suggest that libraries will continue to evolve as technologies and community needs and expectations change. The appearance of the library will evolve to contain more learning spaces for active and group learning. The role of the librarian will evolve as the technology evolves. It will become more focused upon teaching patrons how to use learning tools and access information rather than simply managing and controlling the library’s assets.
The librarians’ role has the potential to become one of service leadership in the community and in the school setting. The impact of the library and the librarians’ role will directly affect students, teachers, and community members. Recommendations from this study may assist in transitioning the librarian/media specialist’s role to a great service leadership model that supports individual growth and community development.

Knowledge Discovery in a Review of Monograph Acquisitions at an Academic Health Sciences LibraryM Rodriguez 07 April 2008 (has links)
This study evaluates monograph acquisition decisions at an academic health sciences library using circulation and acquisitions data. The goal was to provide insight regarding how to allocate library funds to support research and education in disciplines of interest to the library user base. Data analysis revealed that allocations in 13 subject areas should be reviewed as the cost of circulation was greater than the average cost of circulation of the sample and the average cost of monographs was higher in these subject areas than the average cost of monographs in the sample. In contrast, 13 subjects returned cost of circulation rates lower than the average cost of circulation of the sample. These subjects merit stable budget allocation or increased allocation depending upon collection needs. Overall, this study found that this library is allocating a majority of resources to subjects with above average rates of use.

An evaluative study of the psychology collection at the University of Transkei.Breakfast, Kholeka. January 1997 (has links)
The study focused on the evaluation of the psychology book collection at UNITRA library.
In particular, the study investigated the adequacy of the psychology book collection in terms
of accessibility, availability, and pertinence. A sample of 264 respondents was selected from
a population of 1123 students. A proportionate random sampling was used to select
respondents from each stratum. The survey method was used, and questionnaires were
administered to the sample of 1995 registered psychology students at UNITRA from Year
1 to Honours level. The questionnaire focused on the research questions, relating to
accessibility , availability, and pertinence of the psychology collection. The data was analysed
by means of a statistical package, SAS. The results were interpreted in relation to the
variables. The findings revealed that accessibility and availability were affected by: the
attendance of the first library orientation programme which is usually offered at the beginning
of the year; the availability of library services at high school; the number of copies of the
same title in the library; library opening hours; attitude of the librarians; procedure for
locating books; number of borrower cards; and the age of books in the library.
The identification of entries representing books on the catalogue, and the location of books
on the shelves were found to be easier for those users who had attended library orientation
and those who had libraries at their high school. It was recommended that lecturers and
librarians should encourage students to also use the subject catalogue in order to get more
books on the same subject. A number of other recommendations were suggested taken from
the findings and other authorities on the subject to improve the accessibility, availability and
pertinence of the psychology collection. The development of a written collection development
policy would make the implementation of the above recommendations easier. / Thesis (M.I.S.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1997.

Dissertação Carolina Magalhães_completa.pdf: 2769011 bytes, checksum: ed908dccf4e0f1d2e42ce58205f08de5 (MD5) / CNPq / A presente pesquisa foca a formação de coleções de livros digitais nas bibliotecas
universitárias públicas do Brasil.
A partir do
ABSTRACT - This research focuses on the formation of collections of digital books in
university public libraries of Brazil. This recent book´s typology seems to impose new
elements that should be considered when planning its introduction in collections. These
new elements cover a range of issues that affect not only the chain of the organization
operation, processing and retrieval of information, but it lies at the earlier stages starting
with the selection and acquisition of digital collections. Take as the universe of research
the Brazilian´s university public libraries that driven by the advancement of
technological resources, needs to create an innovative environment for the development
of research providing for users new collections and access facilities which leads us to
analyze them in order to elucidate the variables in the process. Wonders how and on
what basis (politics and guidelines) are held selection of collections of digital books
purchased by public universities in Brazil to underpin these choices. Thus, the aim of
the research is to ascertain the parameters selection of electronic books for inclusion in
the public collections of university libraries, if it policies includes digital resources for
the formation of these collections. The research can be classified as descriptive in a
qualitative and quantitative approach. The technique of data collection that best suited
the proposal was the survey method, using as an instrument of data collection structured
questionnaire via web portals and mapping in the Universities. From the theoretical
referential was verified that the digital book market in Brazil is booming, but the
provision of technical and scientific books in Portuguese to serve the needs of academic
libraries, is still limited. From the data analysis it was found that most federal public
universities, offer collections of digital books in two ways: subscription and perpetual
access, whose contents are partially selected by the universities. These books are
available in digital platforms of publishers or aggregators / distributors of content,
which are also responsible for the access, storage and control of copyrights, although in
some cases, the custody of the books is in the university. There was a symmetry in the
results for the collection development policy, half stated that the collection of electronic
books meets policy and the other half backorders.

Brazilian university libraries have been expanding their collection of digital and electronic books. Despite this, there is no research that deals with the evaluation of this collection. There are papers that deal with the development of digital and electronic book collections, but the research is focused on the selection and acquisition stages. With the fast expansion of the collection of digital and electronic books, there is an urgent need to develop methodologies to evaluate them. The starting point of the research was the need to demonstrate to the institution, through an evaluation methodology, the importance of maintaining and expanding the collection of digital and electronic books in the Library, even if the high cost of collections and business models practiced in the Library in Brazil. In 2012 the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) acquired the first collection of digital books with the objective of attending undergraduate courses in classroom and distance course from the two Campuses of the institution. In the following years the collection was expanded, but in the face of the economic crisis that affects educational institutions, the maintenance and expansion of the titles is threatened. Libraries need to prove the importance of keeping collections of digital and electronic books in their collections and the evaluation is the best way. The evaluation of the UFJF collection of digital books, object of study of this work, occurred through the application of a questionnaire to teachers in the areas of biological sciences, health sciences, earth and science, and engineering that analyzed the use of digital books in their academic practices. The perspective of teaching users demonstrated the importance of this collection available at the university and pointed out deficiencies that should be taken into account to encourage, improve and disseminate the use of digital and electronic books within the UFJF.

Video games are culturally and socially important; they are part of daily life for most North Americans and were the most profitable leisure industry of 2014. Interest in this document was sparked in the academic community and several disciplines have studied it, such as psychology, sociology and information science. Some universities have created entire departments devoted to the study of video games: Game Studies. This rise in interest sometimes leads to the creation of a video games collection in academic libraries; this issue is not addressed in academic literature, however, only professional. This research aims to bring a scientific and objective viewpoint to an issue many academic libraries may experience. To do so, we conducted a multiple case study and interviewed librarians, members of the libraries’ staff, teachers and students of two universities, one Canadian and the other, American. This qualitative approach was chosen to answer our four research questions: [1] What are the elements influencing the development of video game collections?, [2] How do professionals treat video games in their collection development activities?, [3] How are video games used by patrons of academic libraries?, and [4] What is the impact of video games on the libraries’ employees tasks?
The results show that the elements influencing the development of video game collections in academic libraries are mostly organisational and financial and that technological elements have to be taken into account when doing retrospective collection development. The development of video game collections differs from that of traditional documents in academic libraries, because librarians choose titles one by one and the important selection criteria include the users’ demands and the support to access the information in the game. Furthermore, clerks and other employees may have to clean and repair objects that are not working properly. The potential users of these collections – teachers and students using video games for teaching or for research – do not use the library’s resources, mainly because they are unaware of them, but also because they cannot borrow them and bring them home. Finally, other than the tasks related to the development of the video game collection, the impact on the employees is minimal, notably because these resources are isolated in the libraries and because employees do not work with other types of documents.

Provision of access to information in academic libraries in Southern Africa : two case studiesBuchholz, Irmera 02 1900 (has links)
Information and communications technology (ICT) makes remote access to information possible. Resource sharing facilitates the provision of access to information sources not owned by an individual library.
Case studies were conducted at the University of South Africa and University of Namibia libraries to explore the provision of access to information in academic libraries in southern Africa through collection development, resource sharing and acquiring remote access to electronic resources through ICT facilities.
It was found that both libraries have recently adapted their collection development policies to accommodate electronic resources although their budgets did not increase accordingly. The recruitment of ICT knowledgeable staff tends to be a problem at both libraries. Resources are shared via interlending and document supply with Unisa Library as a model in southern Africa. Both libraries add their holdings to the national bibliographies and Sabinet and are members of GAELIC. However, the UNAM library is a passive partner. A consortium within Namibia’s borders is suggested to improve resource sharing. / Information Science / M. A. (Information Science)
