Flera sidor av samma mynt : Urvalsarbetet på fyra folkbibliotek i Sverige

Cedergren, Linnéa, Larsson, Miranda January 2017 (has links)
In this bachelor thesis, strategies used for collection development in Swedish public libraries are presented. Librarians from four different libraries from cities of different sizes are interviewed about the way they manage acquisitions, users’ requests for books, and other collection development related tasks. Ranganathan’s five laws for libraries, which are his guidelines for how libraries should work, are used in the analysis, where they are compared to the views of the librarians who are interviewed for this study. The results showed that the different librarians used similar tools when building their collections, and that the most prominent thing they all cited as most important to have in mind was the needs of the libraries users.

Flytande modernitet, flytande bestånd : En ideologikritisk undersökning av beslutsprocesser på folkbiblioteken i Göteborg / Liquid Modernity, Floating Collections : a Critical Investigation Into a Decision-Making Process at the Library of Gothenburg

Jensen, Johannes January 2021 (has links)
In 2011 the pubic libraries in Gothenburg transitioned to floating collections. The process coincided with the temporary closing and renovation of the City Library, and was made possible by an almost simultaneous, centralisation of the libraries’ media budget that, as a side effect, also centralised the decision-making. The way that the process was decided upon and implemented gave rise to controversy, both within the administration and outside. This study delves into the decision-making process, how floating collections were introduced and how thetransition played out during the years 2011-2014. With the minutes of meeting from the so called “Library Management Group”, documents produced by the administration during the process and interviews with people involved, the study maps the steps that made the transition possible and the decisions that made it an inflamed topic. With added perspectives from organisational theory and critique of ideology the study goes into the mechanistics of decision-making within the framework of liquid modernity. It indicates a culture of decision-making that has left the bureaucracy of solid modernity behind and that sees the library organisation and employees within it as an obstacle instead of as a resource. The decision and the technical solution of floating collections is best understood as an object of ideology. That is to say that it is treated as a solution in itself to the contradictions and conflict that exists within the organisation. As the contradictions remain the decision-making in effect gives rise to more conflicts rather than less. The question from an ideological standpoint however is if this any longer poses a problem for the leadership, since there will always be new reorganisations to implement. This is a two years master's thesis in Library and information science.

Managing Open Access Costs : Exploring the Impact on University Library Collection Devel-opment and Service Offerings

Andersson McEwem, Michelle January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of open access costs on university library collection develop-ment and service offerings, specifically focusing on the major changes resulting from the Open Science movement as identified by library officers. It aims to provide insights into the challenges faced by university libraries in managing open access costs and the strategies employed to overcome them. The central research question addressed in this thesis is: What major changes do library officers identify in library offerings as a result of the Open Science movement? The thesis utilizes collection development theory as a framework to evaluate and manage library collections. Ad-ditionally, the theory explores the challenges associated with open access costs and the strategies employed by libraries to address them. The thesis employs an interview-based approach to gather data and insights from eight librarians and library of-ficers. These interviews aim to capture the perceptions of library officers regarding the impact of open access costs on collection development and service offerings. The analysis explores the strategies implemented by libraries to manage open access costs and assesses the sustainability of open access funding models. The study also compares the experiences of small and large libraries to identify any differences in strategies employed and challenges faced. The primary material used in this thesis consists of interview transcripts from the eight librarians and library of-ficers. These interviews provide valuable qualitative data on their perspectives, experiences, and strategies related to open access costs and their impact on library offerings

Provision of access to information in academic libraries in Southern Africa : the case study

Buchholz, Irmera 02 1900 (has links)
Information and communications technology (ICT) makes remote access to information possible. Resource sharing facilitates the provision of access to information sources not owned by an individual library. Case studies were conducted at the University of South Africa and University of Namibia libraries to explore the provision of access to information in academic libraries in southern Africa through collection development, resource sharing and acquiring remote access to electronic resources through ICT facilities. It was found that both libraries have recently adapted their collection development policies to accommodate electronic resources although their budgets did not increase accordingly. The recruitment of ICT knowledgeable staff tends to be a problem at both libraries. Resources are shared via interlending and document supply with Unisa Library as a model in southern Africa. Both libraries add their holdings to the national bibliographies and Sabinet and are members of GAELIC. However, the UNAM library is a passive partner. A consortium within Namibia’s borders is suggested to improve resource sharing. / Information Science / M. A. (Information Science)

Academic integration of libraries at Universities of Technology (UoTs) in South Africa

Neerputh, Shirlene 16 September 2014 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Technology: Library and Information Studies, Durban University of Technology, 2013 / Academic libraries should lead in the instructional change process by being at the nexus of teaching, learning and research in the university. This study was set in the context of the current higher educational landscape of South Africa. In particular, it focused on the emerging role of the University of Technology (UoT) library to enhance academic success. This was an exploratory study juxtaposed with a literature review pertinent to national and international library integration programmes and practices. Justification for this study stemmed from the current local and international trend for academic libraries to become proactive partners in teaching and learning through academic integration and leadership in promoting the university’s mission and goals. Underpinned by the process learning theoretical framework, the aim of this study was to explore the extent to which academic integration has been adopted by UoT libraries in South Africa. Process learning was chosen by the researcher because it is considered a learner-centred teaching technique for student engagement and it is consistent with the constructivist theory postulated and applicable to UoT libraries. The specific objectives of the survey were to determine: what academic integration programmes are offered by UoT libraries to enhance teaching, learning and research in South Africa; existing information literacy programmes and assessment practices in UoT libraries; what postgraduate/research programmes are offered by the library to academics and students and how they are represented in strategy or policy documents; and the similarities and differences in academic integration programmes in all six UoTs in SA. A mixed methods approach (quantitative and qualitative methodologies) were used to collect data regarding programmes and practices prevalent in UoT libraries across all six UoTs in South Africa. An online questionnaire was administered using SurveyMonkey. Forty-two subject librarians participated in the survey, yielding a sixty- two percent response rate. The objectives of the study were achieved by the identification of the following key academic integration programmes: embedded information literacy programmes; resource collection and development; faculty collaboration and partnerships to promote academic success; research scholarship and open access initiatives; social media networking; and reading and writing programmes. This study found that while academic integration has gained momentum in UoTs in South Africa, greater effort should be made in collaboration with academics in: embedded information literacy and blended learning; open access and scholarship; reading and writing programmes; and collaboration in postgraduate interventions. The findings also revealed that while most libraries internationally have embraced reading and writing programmes, libraries offering reading and writing programmes to enhance academic success are relatively scarce in UoTs in South Africa. It is recommended that the subject librarians engage in academic integration practices by: supporting the curricula and research programmes; improving institutional outcomes; improving collaborations; building intellectual or knowledge centres and providing relevant information to students and staff within a knowledge society.

A national electronic database of special music collections in South Africa

De Jongh, Martha Susanna 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / In the absence of a state-sponsored South African archive that focuses on collecting, ordering, cataloguing and preserving special music collections for research, the Documentation Centre for Music (DOMUS) was established in 2005 as a research project at the University of Stellenbosch. Music research in South Africa is often impeded by inaccessibility of materials, staff shortages at archives and libraries, financial constraints and time-consuming ordering and cataloguing processes. Additionally there is, locally, restricted knowledge of the existence, location and status of relevant primary sources. Accessibility clearly depends on knowing of the existence of materials, as well as the extent to which collections have been ordered and catalogued. An overview of repositories such as the Nasionale Afrikaanse Letterkundige Museum and Navorsingsentrum (NALN), the now defunct National Documentation Centre for Music and the International Library of African Music (ILAM) paints a troubling picture of archival neglect and disintegration. Apart from ILAM, which has a very specific collecting and research focus, this trend was one that ostensibly started in the 1980s and is still continuing. It could be ascribed to a lack of planning and forward thinking under the previous political dispensation, aggravated by policies of transformation and restructuring in the current one. Existing sources supporting research on primary materials are dated and not discipline-specific. Thus this study aims to address issues of inaccessibility of primary music materials by creating a comprehensive and ongoing national electronic database of special music collections in South Africa. It is hoped that this will help to alert researchers to the existence and status of special music collections housed at various levels of South African academic and civil society.

Procedures for the Processing, Cataloging, and Classification of a Non-Circulating Historical Art Print Collection

Ray, Linda 01 April 1975 (has links)
In order to establish specific procedures for processing, cataloging and classifying the art print collection at the Kentucky Library, Western Kentucky University, data were gathered from three sources. These were: (1) information on current procedures used in the Kentucky Library, obtained through an interview with Riley Handy, the Kentucky Librarian (2) a search of related literature and (3) a questionnaire survey of other institution having art print collections. It was found that historically valuable art prints, which are used primarily as documentary resources, need to be carefully processed and stored so as to preserve and protect them from damaging effects of light, temperature change, humidity and dust. Effective preservation techniques include: (1) controlling the light, temperature and humidity in the building through installation of modern air conditioning units, electronic air filters and artificial light filters; (2) making photographs of the art prints so that the copies rather the original prints can be used by the patrons; (3) placing the prints in all-rag paper or Mylar plastic folders which are then stored flat in dustproof acid free paper boxes or steel map cases; and (4) having damaged prints restored only by professional prints conservationists who use reversible restoration techniques. In regard to cataloging, it was found that historically valuable prints should be individually cataloged and should be organized in either a classified system or in numerical arrangement. Although no central reporting agency exists for disseminating information about art prints, the findings indicate the advisability of each institution publicizing its own art print holdings.

To Determine the Extent to Which the Denton County Library is Meeting the Recreational Reading Interests of the Elementary Pupils of the Rural Schools of Denton County, Texas

Lambert, Benjamin Carter 08 1900 (has links)
"In order to determine the extent to which the Denton County Free Library is meeting the needs of the elementary school children for recreational reading, an analysis was made of the reading interests of the elementary-school children of twelve common school districts of Denton County, Texas. The ages of these children ranged from nine to fourteen years. A second analysis was made by checking various acceptable authors in the field of children's reading interests as read by the children in this group and age level. This information was secured by having each child in the schools check the items listed in a school survey sheet. This information was tabulated and the results are shown in tables presented in Chapter III. A third analysis was made of library material found in the reading lists that were supplied by the county; and lastly, a comparison was made of the results of the last analysis with the two preceding ones." -- leaf 3
