Wang, Mei-ya Unknown Date (has links)
This dissertation applies a new perspective, complexity theory, to discuss the diffusion of “conceptual innovation”. Here conceptual innovation indicates a paradigm-like innovation with various content. By using “metaphor”, I treat diffusion as a self-organization process, and adopted important concepts from complexity theory, such as initial conditions, positive feedback, and self-organization, and then develop a dynamic process model of innovation diffusion. In this dissertation, a multi-method research design is adopted. To draw on the strength of each and offset the weakness of the others, three empirical studies were conducted. First study, the pilot study of this dissertation, is concerning the diffusion process of Montessori method, in which the different result of three diffusion stages was compared. Second, a laboratory experimental study simulating diffusion process of a new concept has been conducted. In each experiment, a new concept was announced and counted the number of adopters. Each experiment has different scenario design that is one specific combination of all variables, and then the number of adopters was compared. Third, the diffusion process of Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid) industrial innovations was studied, in which the development process of early/late stage and three category orchids was compared. This dissertation concludes with the following findings. First, innovation diffusion is a dynamic, nonlinear complex process; factors in initial conditions will influence the result of innovation diffusion. Secondly, evolution and positive feedback effects work continuously all through the diffusion process. Finally, diffusion of conceptual innovation is a self-organization process, which depends on energy injecting into the system continuously and the existence of central coordination mechanism in the system.

Label Cover Reductions for Unconditional Approximation Hardness of Constraint Satisfaction / Ettikettäckningsreduktioner för Obetingad Approximationssvårighet av Vilkorsuppfyllning

Wenner, Cenny January 2014 (has links)
Combinatorial optimization include such tasks as finding the quickest route to work, scheduling jobs to specialists, and placing bus stops so as to minimize commuter times. We consider problems where one is given a collection of constraints with the objective of finding an assignment satisfying as many constraints as possible, also known as Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs). Most CSPs are NP-hard to solve optimally and we turn to approximations - a solution is said to be a factor-c approximation if its satisfies at least c times the optimal number of constraints. This thesis presents new results on the approximation limits of CSPs in various settings. In ordering CSPs, one is given constraints which specify the relative order of items, and the objective is order the items so as to satisfy as many constraints as possible. We give improved approximation hardness results for two classical problems: it is NP-hard to approximate Maximum Acyclic Subgraph with a factor better than 14/15 and Maximum Betweenness with a factor better than 1/2. We present ordering problems which are NP-hard to approximate better than random assignments, and that there are ordering problems arbitrarily hard to approximate. Next, Gaussian elimination can efficiently find exact solutions for satisfiable collections of so-called parity constraints. We show that whenever constraints accept at least one assignment in addition to a parity, then the problem is NP-hard to approximate better than random assignments. Finally, we study the uselessness property which basically states that if one is given a collection where almost all constraints are simultaneously satisfiable and one is permitted to relax the constraints to accept or reject additional assignments, then it is still NP-hard to find solutions noticeably better than random assignments. We consider the setting where all variables appear unnegated and provide the first examples of non-trivially useless predicates assuming only P != NP.
/ ApproxNP

Disjoint NP-pairs and propositional proof systems

Beyersdorff, Olaf 31 August 2006 (has links)
Disjoint NP-pairs are an interesting complexity theoretic concept with important applications in cryptography and propositional proof complexity. In this dissertation we explore the connection between disjoint NP-pairs and propositional proof complexity. This connection is fruitful for both fields. Various disjoint NP-pairs have been associated with propositional proof systems which characterize important properties of these systems, yielding applications to areas such as automated theorem proving. Further, conditional and unconditional lower bounds for the separation of disjoint NP-pairs can be translated to results on lower bounds to the length of propositional proofs. In this way disjoint NP-pairs have substantially contributed to the understanding of propositional proof systems. Conversely, this dissertation aims to transfer proof-theoretic knowledge to the theory of NP-pairs to gain a more detailed understanding of the structure of the class of disjoint NP-pairs and in particular of the NP-pairs defined from propositional proof systems. For a proof system P we introduce the complexity class DNPP(P) of all disjoint NP-pairs for which the disjointness of the pair is efficiently provable in the proof system P. We exhibit structural properties of proof systems which make the previously defined canonical NP-pairs of these proof systems hard or complete for DNPP(P). Moreover, we demonstrate that non-equivalent proof systems can have equivalent canonical pairs and that depending on the properties of the proof systems different scenarios for DNPP(P) and the reductions between the canonical pairs exist. As an important tool for our investigation we use the connection of propositional proof systems and disjoint NP-pairs to theories of bounded arithmetic.

Theoretically, this study is based on Morin (2004, 2005 e 2010) and Moraes (2008) complexity, and on Santa-Cecilia (1996) and Donnino, Platero and Weigel (2013) mainly in teaching Spanish in Brazil, on among others, Zamel (1992) and Lerner (2002), who describe writing and collaborative writing and others. It is also based on Moraes (2008) and Valentini and Fagundes (2005) concept of negotiation. 9th grade students from a private school inland São Paulo state took part of this study. Besides their regular Spanish classes, they took a hybrid (on line and face-to-face) course which is the object of this study. The texts analyzed here were produced during this extra course. Students had to choose films as subject for the blog to be created by them, so discussions on those texts took place on Moodle and WhatsApp and reflections were written on Moddle s diary. Concerning methodology, we used Ricoeur (1986/2002), van Manen (1990) and Freire (2010/2012a) hermeneutic phenomenology approach. Our investigation showed that the focused phenomenon is built from the topics in the Forum: call, organization and teasing; in WhatsApp: agreement, trick, organization, teasing and complaining; and in the Diary: finding, expectation, anger and prudence.

Almeida, Lia de Azevedo 24 March 2015 (has links)
Traditional models of policy analysis have been criticized due to the fact that their explanations have been marked by the duality between agency and structure, and also to its linear character. Scholars have emphasized the potential of complexity theory to the area of public policy, but there are still few studies in this regard. This work contributed to the area by proposing an analytical tool for the analysis of public policies based on complexity theory and that can help in understanding the policy-making process from a holistic view. By applying the fitness landscape to the analysis of the formulation process of the National Solid Waste Policy, I tried to understand how the structural aspects (resources owned by the actors) and aspects of agency (capacity to align to defend their interests) dynamically relate to each other and to what extent, they help explain the policy that was formulated. The database was primarily composed of shorthand notes of public hearings in 10 years, from 2000 to 2010. It was built a code analysis seeking to identify the resources of the actors and the topics of discussion, and which actors shared similar positions. Additional interviews were conducted in order that they could solve ambiguities arising from the documentary analysis. It was found that the most influential actors (with the most important resources and that could establish relations with other actors) got their goals expressed in policy and could also sometimes affect the dynamics of negotiation. The resulting policy was largely a reflection of the demands of the actors with the highest fitness in each period. The case analysis trought the lens of complexity, resulted different outputs from those provided by traditional theories, allowing the time could be incorporated in the analysis, providing a holistic explanation of the process.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Nei Alberto Salles Filho.pdf: 2695349 bytes, checksum: 4ab714fe7fdafaac1b8fb3bc54c715a6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-03-18 / This paper has as object of research the Education for Peace as an educational component of a Culture of Peace, from the perspective of the Complexity Theory by Edgar Morin. This is a qualitative, exploratory and theoretical research, based on published procedures. The central question of the research, we seek to answer is: What are the theoretical assumptions underlying the Education for Peace, as an educational component of a Culture of Peace, from the perspective of the Complexity Theory by Edgar Morin ? This issue is addressed from supported theoretical questions, such as: a discussion of the Culture for Peace from Edgar Morins´s thoughts, Education for Peace in the context of education in complexity, besides integrated aspects in the constitution of "Five pedagogies of Peace ", consisting of: Education of Human Values, Education of Human rights, Education of Conflicts solving, Education of eco-formation and Education of the Living together. Resulting from these issues, we drew the following research objectives: Build an analytical framework of Education for Peace as a pedagogical way for the Culture of Peace; Discuss the Culture of Peace in relation to the complexity paradigm proposed by Edgar Morin; Relate the Education for Peace to the whole discussion of education in complexity, showing the "seven knowledge for tomorrow's education", proposed by Edgar Morin; Propose an understanding of Education for Peace from the five interconnected components . In this referral, we analyzed the set of six works "Method" by Edgar Morin (2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013) to understand his world, life, society and education view, which are examined in the sequence of the study. In addition, we analyzed and discussed a theoretical basis for the Education for Peace, especially from the Galtung studies (1994, 2006), Jares (2002, 2007), Rayo (2004) and Serrano (2002). Based on this discussion, the next step of this paper is for the theoretical construction of the "Five Pedagogy of Peace", dealt in their specificity and pedagogical aspects, relating them to the knowledge of education and the perspective of complexity.

We attempted to investigate normative children with learning difficulties in reading, proposing music therapeutic actions as mediation to expand the understanding of these cases. The field research, a case study of qualitative approach, was developed in an elementary public school in the city of Goiania, through which data were collected in many ways: music therapeutic visits to the learners, semi-structured interviews with teachers, student's family and the school context observations. The analysis was performed using data triangulation, establishing three periods (Beginner, Intermediate and Final) considering the musical sound expressions and the inter-and intrapersonal relationship aspects of these students and the perceptions aspects of the other actors (teachers and family members), and data on the dynamics of the school, generating analytical categories. The theoretical framework that subsidized this analysis was the Complexity Theory in dialogue with theoretical references of the music therapy, education and socio-historical psychology. The results of research showed that the homogeneity characteristic of the teaching/traditional school can lead to noncompliance of the students in situations of free expression and/or creative character, tending to the manifestation of misconduct and disorder. We understand, according to the complexity, that the disorder is a necessary phenomenon and concomitant to the order, since you need to learn to build, rebuild and/or deconstruct ideas, experiences and values. Music therapy in the school allowed a space for expression of the relations and intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts of learners. We believe that, to provide significant new experiences the subject (and do experiment) therapeutic musicians from experience, it is possible to facilitate to internalization of new knowledge and, consequently, the development. Complexity theory has enabled the contextualization of learning disabilities in reading favoring the understanding of the multiple factors that are mutual.
