Traduction et réception de la fiction hispano-américaine en France et aux Pays-Bas entre 1960 et 1973 / Translation and reception of Spanish-American fiction in France and in the Netherlands from 1960 till 1973

A partir des années 1960, la fiction hispano-américaine connaît un essor sans précédent, auquel la critique littéraire internationale a donné le nom très contesté de boom. Le principal problème de ce terme est qu’il renvoie à un phénomène touchant à la fois la production et la diffusion de la littérature hispano-américaine.Notre travail prose une relecture du phénomène à travers l’étude de la traduction et de la réception de Julio Cortázar, Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez et Mario Vargas Llosa en France et aux Pays-Bas entre 1960 et 1973.En retraçant l’historique des premières traductions et en analysant le contexte éditorial dans lequel elles sont arrivées, nous montrons l’existence d’écarts profonds séparant les deux pays dans la traduction des quatre auteurs, n’illustrant pas toujours leur position théorique au sein de l’espace mondial de la traduction, et le rôle importants joués par certains intermédiaires culturels. Par le biais d’une étude de traduction et de réception, nous mettons aussi en évidence le rôle de médiation joué par les traducteurs et la critique littéraire entre les œuvres originales et le lecteur final dans les deux pays de référence. / Spanish-American fiction has been developing unprecedented from the 1960’s, what has been given the highly contested name of boom by international literary critics. The main problem of that term is that it refers to a phenomenon affecting both the production and distribution of Spanish-American literature.Our work is a reading of the phenomenon through the study of translation and reception of Julio Cortázar, Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa in France and in the Netherlands between 1960 and 1973.In tracing the history of the early translations and analysis of the editorial context in which they arrived, we show the existence of profound differences between the two countries in the translation of the four authors, which do not illustrate their theoretical position in the world space of translation, and the important role played by certain cultural intermediaries. Through a study of translation and reception, we also highlight the mediating role played by translators and literary criticism between the original texts and the final reader in the two reference countries.

Le corps fantomatique dans Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein de Marguerite Duras et La Maison étrangère d'Élise Turcotte

Depuis la valorisation du corps comme site identitaire et comme langage autre dans la théorisation de l’écriture au féminin des années 1970, les représentations du corps, notamment du corps féminin, occupent la scène romanesque jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Dans cette perspective, le présent mémoire s’intéresse au corps fantomatique des héroïnes du Ravissement de Lol V. Stein de Marguerite Duras et de La Maison étrangère d’Élise Turcotte. Le corps se fait littéralement hantise chez Duras et Turcotte : il est marqué d’absence, d’étrangeté, de fatigue et d’errance, ne trouvant plus de lieu d’être ni de repères à la suite d’un événement « traumatique », dans le cas de Lol, ou à la suite d’une séparation, dans celui d’Élisabeth. Les protagonistes sont sous l’emprise d’un sentiment d’étrangeté qui spectralise le corps en introduisant un décalage dans le rapport à soi et à autrui. Ce sentiment est causé en partie par une mémoire défaillante qui fragmente leur identité. C’est par un travail mémoriel que Lol V. Stein et Élisabeth tenteront de résoudre la hantise de leur histoire individuelle et familiale. Le texte fait écho à la corporalité fantomatique – mise en scène selon diverses représentations du corps dématérialisé – en se spectralisant à son tour par l’inscription des « blancs » dans l’écriture. Le processus d’effacement des corps sera mis en parallèle avec une spatio-temporalité elle aussi marquée par la hantise du passé. La spectralité apparaît, dans le récit contemporain au féminin, pour témoigner d’une identité (cor)rompue par la rupture ; celle-ci devient prétexte à une réflexion sur la manière d’habiter son corps et d’un être-au-monde à repenser. / The 1970s have seen the body become a stronghold of identity and offer a new language for the theorization of women’s writing. Since then, representations of the body, especially of the female body, have taken over the novel. In that perspective, this dissertation studies the ghostly body of two heroines in Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein by Marguerite Duras and La Maison étrangère by Élise Turcotte. Their bodies are marked by absence, eeriness, tiredness and wandering, unable to fully exist within a world that has lost its bearings following a “traumatic event” for Lol and the end of a relationship for Élisabeth. The protagonists suffer from an eerie sensation that essentially “spectralises” the body by revealing a gap in their relationship to themselves as well as to others. This sensation is caused in part by a failing memory which breaks up their sense of self. Trying to work through these memory faults, both Lol and Élisabeth aspire to solve the dread of their personal and familial history which seems to be at the root of their ghostly, uncomfortable grasp on their own body. The text echoes back to the spectral corporeality – staged by different representations of the dematerialized body – through « blanks » left within the writing. The process by which the bodies seem to vanish or disappear can be closely associated with a particular spacio-temporality, itself tainted by a haunting past. Spectrality occurs, in women’s contemporary fiction, to express an identity compromised by the ending of a relationship ; this particular event becomes the pretext for a reflection about how one inhabits not only their body, but also the world it binds them to.

Este trabalho visa a analisar e interpretar O ovo apunhalado, coletânea de contos de Caio Fernando Abreu, publicada em 1975, em sintonia com as cartas do escritor, a fim de investigar em que medida — e tendo em vista o conjunto da obra — se estabelecem diálogos com as diferentes representações sócio-culturais do seu tempo, em especial dos anos 70, fase assinalada pela conquista da notoriedade do ficcionista sul-riograndense no cenário da literatura brasileira. Os distintos modos de composição utilizados em O ovo apunhalado assinalam a postura de permanente contravenção à realidade objetiva e subjetiva, resultado de um jogo dialético com as vicissitudes históricas. Para tanto, os fundamentos teóricos de Theodor Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Georg Simmel, entre outros, contribuem para elucidar que as rupturas com a forma literária efetuam-se por uma não conformidade aos fenômenos histórico-sociais. As cartas, por sua vez, reiteram a contundência literária, diretamente relacionada à irreverência do escritor enquanto sujeito social. Vers le début des années 80, on assiste, sur la scène littéraire française, à un renouveau romanesque que le Nouveau Roman, trop centré sur les jeux de langage, semblait avoir démodé. On assiste également à une résurgence du roman réaliste, social, musical, policier et d’aventures. C’est précisément cette problématique du retour, notamment celui du roman d’aventures, que cette thèse tente d’exposer et surtout d’interroger à travers l’étude de l'oeuvre très représentative d’Echenoz. En renouant avec le genre classique, notre auteur n’hésite pas à en modifier la configuration et les enjeux. La mise au jour de ceux-ci nous permet d’élaborer une poétique du récit d’aventures postmoderne. Telle est la finalité de cette étude : revisiter les lieux d’un genre traditionnel ressuscité pour en dégager les formes et les enjeux contemporains. Mais à cet objectif, s’en ajoute un autre de plus large envergure : parcourir via l’étude du genre, les tribulations de la fiction échenozienne qui n’hésite pas à bifurquer d’un genre à l’autre, à chavirer entre deux espace-temps et à se thématiser dans une écriture elle-même périlleuse, toujours prête à malmener son lecteur totalement démuni face à l’audace débridée de son auteur et aux déroutantes perturbations de la narration et de l’œuvre. / Since 1980, the literary scene in France has witnessed a revival of romance once made obsolete by the New Novel (Nouveau Roman). Realistic, social, musical, crime, spy and adventure fiction has thus sprung up again. The current study examines and questions the problematic of “return” especially the return of adventure fiction in the very representative work of Jean Echenoz. Thought reviving a classical genre, the author does not shy away from modifying and remodeling that genre’s configurations and issues. Thus, this survey elaborates a poetic of the postmodern fiction of adventures, revisiting a traditional genre to extract contemporary forms and issues, so to speak. But from a broader perspective, the study underscores the tribulations of Echenoz’s fiction, work which does not mind to collapse plots, oscillate from one genre to another or sway between two space-times, at the risk of presenting itself in a turbulent mode of writing confounding the reader - who fells helpless in the face of the unbridled audacity of the author and his narrative perturbations.

Mitchell's mandalas : mapping David Mitchell's textual universe

This study uses the Tibetan mandala, a Buddhist meditation aid and sacred artform, as a secular critical model by which to analyse the complete fictions of author David Mitchell. Discussing his novels, short stories and libretti, this study maps the author's fictions as an interconnected world-system whose re-evaluation of secular belief in galvanising compassionate ethical action is revealed by a critical comparison with the mandala's methods of world-building. Using the mandala as an interpretive tool to critique the author's Buddhist influences, this thesis reads the mandala as a metaphysical map, a fitting medium for mapping the author's ethical worldview. The introduction evaluates critical structures already suggested to describe the author's worlds, and introduces the mandala as an alternative which more fully addresses Mitchell's fictional terrain. Chapter I investigates the mandala's cartographic properties, mapping Mitchell's short stories as integral islandic narratives within his fictional world which, combined, re-evaluate the role of secular belief in galvanising positive ethical action. Chapter II discusses the Tibetan sand mandala in diaspora as a form of performance when created for unfamiliar audiences, reading its cross-cultural deployment in parallel with the regenerative approaches to tragedy in the author's libretti Wake and Sunken Garden. Chapter III identifies Mitchell's use of reincarnation as a form of non-linear temporality that advocates future-facing ethical action in the face of humanitarian crises, reading the reincarnated Marinus as a form of secular bodhisattva. Chapter IV deconstructs the mandala to address its theoretical limitations, identifying the panopticon as its sinister counterpart, and analysing its effects in number9dream. Chapter V shifts this study's use of the mandala from interpretive tool to emerging category, identifying the transferrable traits that form the emerging category of mandalic literature within other post-secular contemporary fictions, discussing works by Michael Ondaatje, Ali Smith, Yann Martel, Will Self, and Margaret Atwood.
