Ribeiro, Izaque Machado January 2011 (has links)
This study uses the ethnographic method to describe the daily events of groups that collect recyclable materials from a town in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. Starting with the question of how gender relations in the workplace are configured, the study was conducted at three sites where the groups were present: the street, the recycling centers and workshops. From this itinerary, we discuss the relationship of the core of the National Movement of Collectors of Recyclable Materials, the difficulties encountered in the research and the peculiarities of a male researcher developing a research in a context markedly feminine. We also seek to understand the way the collectors deal with their bodies at different times, as well as the existing hierarchies in the workplace and working environments where gender relations do not obey the logic of sexual division in the workplace. Finally, we conclude that their way of work is directly linked to the way they deal, with their bodies in various contexts, with leads to a precariousness of women‟s work.

IMPRESA, LAVORO E FINALITA' SOCIALI: LA SOCIETA' BENEFIT / Business, profit and social purposes: the Italian "società benefit"

SAVOLDI, CAMILLA 27 May 2020 (has links)
This thesis has been dedicated to the analysis of the Italian “società benefit”, introduced with the Law no. 208 of 28th December 2015. The study starts from a preliminary comparative analysis aimed at researching uniform trends - in the European and US panorama - in the development of social enterprises’ regulation, i.e. those corporate enterprise forms characterized by hybridization between profit and "sociality" features. The Italian “società benefit” seems to place in this context as an “American” form of social enterprise, as the hybridization between profit and sociality is completely disconnetted from any non-distribution constraint. The analysis of the discipline of the “società benefit”, which constitutes the fulcrum of the research activity, has concerned primarily the legal framework, both in terms of the actual need for its introduction and in terms of distinction of the same with respect to the companies "not-benefit”. The thesis supported in this dissertation is that the “società benefit” fills a gap in the legal system and opposes ordinary lucrative companies in a more than reasonable division of roles, being equipped with features that give it a precise identity in the legal system. Secondly, the thesis has been dedicated to addressing the main interpretative problems emerged by the analyzed discipline, keeping as the central point of research the theme of the actual correspondence between the social object declared with respect to the activity concretely carried out by the company - a theme that in the “società benefit” becomes crucial for assessing the effective value of the new discipline and the underlying initiatives - and assessing the compatibility of the control instruments offered by company law with the specific characteristics of the “società benefit”.

B Corp Certification - A strategic step towards sustainability?

Ferré Cerdà, Laura, Viana Neves, Olivia, Nawej, Jimo Léandre, Carlsson, Marielle January 2020 (has links)
The global socio-ecological system is under stress with increasing consumer demands and society’s inability to meet those demands. Businesses are both enablers and inhibitors of this socio-ecological dilemma, enabling a shift towards sustainability, in various ways including through Certification. This study aims to understand the B Corp Certification (BCC) – a certification that certifies business according to their social and environmental performance.  The purpose of this study is to gage how much this Certification granted by B Lab moves the dial on sustainability.  To accomplish this, a case study was performed on B Lab with a focus on Developed Markets. This study was largely dependent on semi-structured interviews, desk research and an analysis of the B Impact Assessment (BIA) - a cornerstone of the BCC - which was assessed according to the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD). The FSSD which takes a scientific systems view on strategic sustainable development (SSD) was instrumental in analyzing how much the BCC aligns with a SSD approach. The result of this research lends itself to recommendations for the B Corp Certification of which B Lab may choose to consider in future iterations of the BIA and Certification in general.

Ideological Misinformation: How News Corp Australia amplifies the discourses of the reactionary right

Gallagher, Dean January 2019 (has links)
This paper analyses the interactions between Australian mainstream media and social media political influencers and how these interactions amplify ideological misinformation. Social media, particularly YouTube, is increasingly a primary source of news and information for people, principally in the younger 18 – 35-year demographic. Yet while social media has opened up horizontal networks of mass self-communication that allow anyone with an internet to communicate on a mass scale, it has also precipitated a significant rise in the dissemination of reactionary right and extremist messages. The analysis is embedded in Manuel Castells network society theory and utilising Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework and José van Dijck’s combination of the Network Society theory with Actor Network Theory. By analysing the discourses employed by News Corp around notions of “identity politics” “western civilisation” and “the left”, this paper argues that the discourses of News Corp Australia are largely the same as the Alternative Influence Network (AIN) on YouTube – a loosely connected group of reactionary right-wing influencers. It further analyses the way News Corp reports on these influencers, concluding that the intertwining discursive patterns of both News Corp and the AIN have the effect of discriminating against a range of minority groups due to its centring of white, western identity as default. News Corp produces and amplifies ideological misinformation through both power and counterpower communication networks. This is concerning considering News Corp’s prominence and influence in the Australian media landscape. Finally, it argues that the ideological misinformation amplified by News Corp Australia is contributing to a new ideological paradigm that combines populist nationalism with neoliberalism.

Impact of Strategic Communication on Fan Loyalty: A Case Study of Karmine Corp in Esport

Chalvin, Augustin January 2024 (has links)
This thesis studies the communication of the "Karmine Corp" through its social networks.  The Karmine Corp, or KCORP, is a French esports team founded in 2020 and based in Paris, France. Founded by streamers, it is now the most popular team in France and one of the best-known in Europe.  The team's history of success has made it popular on social networks. The comparison between esports (digital competition) and 'classic' sports is also discussed, with arguments put forward by researchers from all sides, enabling us to reflect on the future place or not of esports in sporting competitions. The central theme of this thesis is the analysis of the team's communication and its influence on the current and future evolution of the esports industry.  The team's modern communication strategy, based on the fans' satisfaction and loyalty, differs from anything done before in this field, and it can explain the team's popularity.  By analyzing the team's social network evolution and specific key posts by doing a netnography, comparing the media evolution of the players before and after they joined the club, and surveying committed fans, this study provides a wealth of data that demonstrates the revolution that KCORP is bringing to the world of esports and the impact of a committed community on a field who need credit to exist.

Feng, Eric C.H. Unknown Date (has links)

Regulation of cholesterol intake by the corpus luteum

Miranda, Leonor 04 1900 (has links)
Studies were funded by Colegio de Postgraduados, México. CONACyT, México. SRE, México. Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec, University of Montreal and an Operating Grant to B.D. Murphy from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. / Abstract Ovarian cholesterol supply is rate limiting to ovarian steroidogenesis. For this reason, the majority of cholesterol required for steroid synthesis is imported via scavenger receptor-BI (SR-BI) and the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor from circulating HDL and LDL. SR-BI mRNA is expressed in pig ovaries at all stages of folliculogenesis and in the corpus luteum (CL). SR-BI protein expression in mouse ovary during estrous cycle was also detected. In both species, expression is concentrated in cytoplasm and periphery of follicular cells. Gonadotropins induce SR-BI expression in pig granulosa cells, with cytoplasmic expression increasing through the periovulatory period, with migration to the cell periphery as the CL matured. An 82-kDa form of SR-BI is strongly expressed in the pig CL, with the less abundant 57-kDa form, differences between forms are attributable to glycosylation. In vitro culture of pig follicles with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) induced time-dependent upregulation of 82-kDa SR-BI in granulosa cells. SR-BI and LDL receptor were reciprocally expressed, with the latter highest in follicular granulosa cells, declining precipitously with CL formation. To further explore mechanisms of cholesterol supply to ovarian steroidogenesis, we examined mice treated to uncouple ovulation and mice bearing null mutation of the Scarb1 gene (SR-BI-/-). Results show entrapped oocytes in luteinized structures expressed SR-BI. SR-BI-/- mice displayed small corpora lutea, large follicles with theca cells hypertrophied, follicular cysts with blood filled cavities and 50% decreased in plasma progesterone. In SR-BI-/- mice, treatment with a combination of 20 g/g of mevinolin and 100 g/g of chloroquine (CHLORO) was employed to disturbed cholesterol sources. Serum progesterone was reduced by 43% in wild type and 30% in SR-BI-/- mice. The protein expression of the rate-limiting enzyme for cholesterol synthesis, 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGR) increased in SR-BI-/- mice. It was concluded that follicular cells express SR-BI during follicle development and luteinization causes upregulation of SR-BI expression. Posttranslational maturation is characterized by glycosylation. Under normal conditions expression of the LDLr (low density lipoprotein recepors) is extinguished during luteinization such that SR-BI becomes the principal means of importation of extracellular cholesterol. Further, perturbation of cholesterol de novo synthesis and uptake from LDLr in SR-BI-/- mice leads to a reduction of luteal function. Ovarian cholesterol homeostasis is central to adequate luteinization, and its perturbation leads to reduction, but not to complete impairment, of luteal function. We conclude that SR-BI expression is an important but not essential factor in maintaining ovarian cholesterol homeostasis, steroid synthesis and luteinization. A network of complementary and compensatory cholesterol supply mechanisms act in concert to assure ovarian steroid synthesis.

My Organization Wants Me to Do What? The Effect of Implementing the B-Corp Certification on Employee Pro-Environmental Behavior

Balla, Dorottya, Runesson, Tom January 2019 (has links)
In today’s society, environmental concern might be at a historical peak. 2778 companies in 60 countries have now acquired the Benefit-Corporation (B-Corp) Certification in attempts to demonstrate their environmental responsibility. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of implementing the B-Corp Certification in a USA automotive dealership on employee pro-environmental behavior and life satisfaction, with consideration of the moderating role of commitment to the B-Corp Certification. A within-group quasi-experimental design was used to investigate the effects of the certification over a 5-month period through self-reported measures. Thirty-three employees participated in this study. One-way repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted to measure differences in employee pro-environmental behavior before and after the implementation of the B-Corp Certification. Through bivariate correlations the relationship between employee pro-environmental behavior and life satisfaction was analyzed. Partial correlation was used to test the moderating role of commitment in determining the strength of the implementation on employee pro-environmental behavior. There was no difference between pre- and post-measurements of employee pro-environmental behavior. Commitment to the B-Corp Certification did not moderate the effectiveness of the implementation of the B-Corp Certification on employee pro-environmental behavior. Additionally, no relationship was found between pro-environmental behavior and life satisfaction. Finally, results are discussed within the context of industrial- and organizational(IO) psychology, as are the implications for future research and interventions aimed at increasingemployee pro-environmental behaviors.
