Implementing New Generation Catalog in an Academic Library : Users’ Views and Wishes

Trianti, Alexandra January 2015 (has links)
In an accelerating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) environment, academic libraries’ catalogs have always been part of students’ and faculty members journey of resources discovery. The master thesis intents to focus its interest in Information Systems (IS) ground related to the implementation of a new search engine at the University of Piraeus Library. The Library wants to change the search features of its traditional online services and to implement a new discover tool with Web 2.0 characteristics. The aim of this master thesis is to investigate users’ views and desires interest according to their scholarly needs and expectations about VuFind in order to facilitate the Library to customize the integration. Therefore, critical systems theory will be employed for “therapeutic” reasons to enlighten the Library’s users about their current situation. Qualitative analysis is expected to recognize discrimination against traditional Library’s search engines. Qualitative data of the user impression and reaction when operate with the VuFind interface will lead to recommendations for enhancement and improvements. Findings will assist implementers to modify the discovery layer by meeting users’ needs of the academia community. The research will collect data through qualitative method on how participants operate with the VuFind search engine merging librarians’ professional views and users’ expectations and propositions. Participatory Design (PD) will be built upon Future Workshop method.

To achieve this, it performs a study of the state of knowledge on the subject, analyzing 39 complete articles, in order to pick up the elements that point the trends of the productions in relation to the theory of Piaget in Science Teaching, in online periodicals of Education and Teaching, qualis A1, in Portuguese, from 1990 to 2014. In the analysis frame, the research is based on Jean Piaget (1972, 1973, 1975a, 1975b, 1976, 1977, 1980, 1998, 2012) and on the Critical Theory of Society, especially in Horkheimer (2002). He notes that Piaget's theory of science teaching used in articles serves mainly to highlight the importance of teaching strategies, (ie, experiments, activities, methodologies with children and adolescents to lead to a rich and meaningful learning). The fragmentation of the theory or the diffusion of pedagogical constructivism are not questioned. Should not the instrumentality of Piaget's theory be questioned if we think about its method and its GeneticEpistemology? This study seeks to reflect on the discussions that involve this theory in Science Teaching, noting, in its appropriation, a great emphasis on the discussion of teaching strategies.

Danson, Nina January 2019 (has links)

These tendencies have engendered a mode of thought and behavior which undermined the very foundations of the traditional culture. The main characteristic of this new mode of thought and behavior is the repression of all values, aspirations, and ideas which cannot be defined in terms of operations and attitudes validated by the prevailing forms of rationality. The consequence is the weakening and even the disappearance of all genuinely radical critique, the integration of all opposition in the established system. Herbert Marcuse develops, in One-Dimensional Man, a model both of his critical social theory and of his critical philosophy inspired by his philosophical studies and his work with the Frankfurt School. Also describes a the mechanisms through which the advanced industrial society integrates individuals into its world of thought and behavior. Identifying these mechanisms - the new forms of control , according to Marcuse - their origin, the relationship and synergy amongst themselves are the main scopes of this present job / One-Dimensional Man trabalha com certas tendências básicas da sociedade industrial avançada que parecem indicar uma nova fase de civilização.

Recognition of Prior Learning in Health Care : From a Caring Ideology and Power, to Communicative Action and Recognition / Validering i omvårdnadssektorn : från en omvårdande ideologi och makt, till kommunikativt handlande och erkännande

Sandberg, Fredrik January 2012 (has links)
During the last decades Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) has become a more frequently used method to recognise adult’s prior learning. This thesis analyses a process of RPL in health care, where health care assistants are assessed against subjects in the upper-secondary health care program. Prior research on RPL is to a high degree non-theoretical and focus is primarily on policy level research. This thesis adds to the field by progressing a critical social theory perspective on RPL. In the thesis the RPL process is analysed through Jürgen Habermas’ theory of communicative action and Axel Honneth’s Recognition theory. General questions posed are: What are the power issues in the RPL process? What implications does the tension between the lifeworld of work and the system of education have? What consequences does mutual understanding and communication have for the outcome of the RPL process? What part does recognition play for the participants? The results disclose the power relations that emerge in the relationship between participants and teachers. A caring ideology is developed and problematized. Further, the importance of mutual understanding between participant and teachers in the assessment of prior learning is discussed focusing on the consequences a lack of mutual understanding could have for the outcome in such assessments. On a macro level the analysis demonstrates the tension between the participants prior learning and the educational systems demand for formalising prior learning. In addition, analyses of a more developmental character that intends to show the potential for critical learning, change and recognition are progressed. The results suggest that communicative action can be used to develop RPL into processes focusing on critical learning and change. Recognition of traits and abilities could also enhance individual’s positive relations with the self. Such recognition could develop self-confidence and thus RPL could encourage learning and cultivate continuing self-realisation through work.

Critical Investigation of the Sierra Leone Conlfict: A Moral Practical Reconstruction of Crisis and Colonization in the Evolution of Society

Kabba, Munya 06 December 2012 (has links)
This Sierra Leone Conflict arose from the society’s failure to institutionalize the requisite post-conventional organizing principle for collective will formation and for conflict resolution. In this post-traditional society - one artificially constructed from diverse political and cultural groups, without a shared ethos – only mutual (communicative) understanding can resolve differences and ensure solidarity. A lack of mutual understanding overburdens the adaptive capacity of the society, creating crises tendencies. Repression only intensified these tendencies, ensuring their eventual catastrophic explosion, 11 years civil conflict. State hindrances to social (communicative) interaction rendered the society incapable of realizing the requisite post conventional moral learning i.e. the social intelligence or problem-solving equipment required to resolve conflict, decolonize itself, neutralize normative power, shed dogmatic consciousness, change oppressive conventions, and influential customs. Thus, the study promotes civic virtues of post conventional morality (justice, truthfulness, moral rightness) as the key for liberating the society from its crisis-inducing colonial organizing principle. As the basis of sociology, the discipline the remains focused on society-wide problems, the theory of social evolution is adopted here to reconstruct the crisis in Sierra Leone’s constitutional democratic development. The study uses the rational reconstructive method to explicate problematic validity claims of norms, policy decisions, or the social order. The social order was rendered crisis-ridden because the reasons - the axis around which mutual understanding revolve - adduced for it cannot admit of consensus. The emerging social disintegration exemplifies use of deficient logic in social interaction, one below the requisite categorical moral cognitive consciousness. For this research, colonization is not necessarily externally induced, but forms of understanding in the political, legal, social, and educational interactions. The key point of the study is this: today Sierra Leone achieves solidarity, and decolonize from its conventional organizing principle, only if the state, economy, and civil society can find their limit in the socio-cultural domain.

The present study aims to demonstrate the explosive power of knowledge workers and their ability to rebuild the labor movement as in its origin, ie, truly emancipatory and counter hegemonic. The collective struggles in recent centuries have become merely protest, especially with the advent of the welfare state. Thus capitalism tamed the rights of social movements ensuring minimum. The information revolution overthrew the capitalist fordist paradigm, and new actors have emerged in this scenario who play the game of power between capital and labor.Class struggle unionism based on the character of workers, no longer responds to the desires of the workers of the post-fordist, which must adapt to new social context to restore his strength. Thus, the trade union movement should not only add knowledge workers, as well as the proletariat, the unemployed, unemployable affected by structural unemployment, autonomous, and the homeless and landless, finally, the whole class-that-lives-of-work.It also shows, from the evidence produced by empirical and analytical critical social theory the impact of technological development in the relations of individual and collective work, and the rise of immaterial labor springboard for the condition of contemporary society. Move away from ambiguities in the proposals of the classical doctrine, points to the rescue of the union movement liberating, emancipatory and counter-hegemonic supranational scale, which should be enhanced by use of new information technologies and communication.

Sex workers as free agents and as victims : elucidating the life worlds of female sex workers and the discursive patterns that shape public understanding of their work

Mbatha, Khonzanani 01 1900 (has links)
In South Africa and many other countries worldwide, sex work is criminalised. This invariably seems to lead to back-door prostitution - an unregulated industry where sex workers are vulnerable to being exploited by pimps, brothel owners and law enforcement officers. In discussions about sex work and sex workers, two dominant views are evident: a) Sex workers freely choose to sell sex as a good way of earning an income; or b) sex workers are victims of their circumstances who are driven into the industry through direct coercion or as a result of dire poverty. Together, these views lead to an ideological trap in terms of which sex workers have to be perceived either as having agency and free will or as being helpless victims in need of rescue. My aim in this thesis was to problematise, deconstruct and reconstruct the discursive field within which sex work is embedded, in order to move beyond agency-victimhood and similar binaries, and in the hope of developing new ways of talking about prostitution that acknowledge the complexity of the sex industry rather than shoehorning it into preconceived categories. Social constructionism (epistemology), critical social theory (ontology) and discourse analysis (methodology) were interwoven in order to provide a broad, critical understanding of prostitution. Two data sources were used to gain access to and unpack the life worlds of sex workers: Semi-structured interviews with five sex workers in Johannesburg and the “Project 107” report on adult prostitution in South Africa. Foucauldian discourse analysis was used to make sense of the data, including an analysis of how concepts such as governmentality, power, confession, surveillance and technologies of the self can be applied to contemporary texts about prostitution. The “Project 107” report recommended that prostitution should not be decriminalised, and that sex work should in fact not be classified as work; instead, it proposed a ‘diversion programme’ to help sex workers exit the industry. I show how, in doing this, the report appears to hijack feminist discourses about sex workers as victims in order to further a conservative moral agenda. The sex workers I spoke to, on the other hand, demonstrated an ability to take on board, and to challenge, a variety of different discourses in order to talk about themselves as simultaneously agentic and constrained in what they can do by unjust social structures. I show how, from a Foucauldian perspective, sex workers can be seen not as pinned down at the bottom of a pyramid of power, but immersed in a network of power and knowledge, enabled and constrained by ‘technologies of the self’ to assist in policing themselves through self-discipline and self-surveillance to become suitably docile bodies within the greater public order. / Psychology / D.
