Computers for the Masses: The American Socio-Technological Change of the 1970's and 1980'sGoodman, Robert Bryan 01 June 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis developed out of my personal curiosity on the subject of high-technological development. Specifically, high-technology’s shift from primarily a military tool to a consumer product raised several questions to answer since first taking an interest in the subject. My lifestyle, like many other Americans in my generation, incorporates computers, cell-phones, and video game consoles as not only an innovative tool, but a standard and necessary mode of production. In our contemporary society, technology is obtainable everywhere. As an entertaining tool in the form of video games to a productivity tool in our workplaces, most individuals have assimilated consumer electronics. Yet this essay seeks to look at the beginning of these changes in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. Particularly, how did an American society that based itself around industrial mechanisms suddenly become so enthralled by consumer electronics, which a decade before were used for missile guidance and complex mathematical calculations? How did these devices, which were initially proposed as an industrial and political efficiency tool, suddenly become a labeled consumer luxury good? The answer to these questions surprisingly developed into a more complex socioeconomic analysis of 1970’s and 1980’s behaviors that utilized a Marxist interpretation of the relationship between technology and the human experience. This topic incorporates terms and theories from a variety of academic subjects. While this essay is formed around a historical narrative and argument, much of the evidence is acquired from economical, sociological, and psychological resources. As a result, I hope readers of this essay will find it as enlightening and enjoyable as my own personal journey within the subject.

Resistance to Statism in Frontier Era Upper East Tennessee, 1760-1820Price, Casey 01 May 2019 (has links)
This thesis analyzes efforts among frontier settlers of Upper East Tennessee to resist particular elements of state-craft from the 1750s until 1820. Building on the work of James C. Scott, this study suggests that some residents of the area may have resisted acceding to what they considered the negative aspects of residing within state sovereignty. These included, taxation, land enclosure, organized religion, and regulation of economic activity. Analyzing from outside the lens of the state, this study attempts to explore why organized government remained largely ineffective and widely disregarded in the Upper East Tennessee region even as governance rapidly and effectively took hold both in the Tidewater and central piedmont of Virginia and North Carolina, as well as middle Tennessee and Kentucky. The topography of the region, coupled with the anti-state stratagems the settlers adopted, enabled the area to retain a dimension of practical autonomy.

”Va!?
This study is about the idea of the cultural canon that’s going to be introduced according to the Tidö-agreement that was published in 2022. The aim is to highlight how music teacher students reflect on a cultural canon and what implications it would potentially have for music education while answering the research question: What characterizes music teacher students' statements about a potential cultural canon and its implications for their future music teaching? To answer the research question, six music teacher students, studying their later years during the autumn semester of 2023, were interviewed and their statements were analyzed from a cultural-historical perspective. The results show that a type of unexpressed canon already exists today and that content from it is used to mediate understanding for other people based on collective knowledge. The result also show that there are smaller collectives and that such can be an unexpressed canon within an expressed canon. The result show that the informants consider representation important in the execution and content of an expressed canon and further that an expressed canon can be used to control history and collective knowledge. In conclusion, the result show that an expressed canon can be inhibiting for a music teacher, but that it can lead to activities for creativity and imagination through a common understanding of collective knowledge.

[en] CHILDHOOD, FAMILY AND CONSUMPTION: AN ANALYSIS OF ADVERTISEMENTS PUBLISHED IN THE FIRST THREE YEARS OF PAIS AND FILHOS MAGAZINE / [pt] INFÂNCIA, FAMÍLIA E CONSUMO: UMA ANÁLISE DOS ANÚNCIOS PUBLICADOS NOS TRÊS PRIMEIROS ANOS DA REVISTA PAIS E FILHOSPATRICIA MELLO MENDES KOSLINSKI 26 October 2023 (has links)
A revista Pais e
A revolução provocada
[en] This dissertation conducts a study of advertisements published in Parents and Sons magazine between the years 1968 to 1971. The aim is to discuss how medianarratives helped to constitute some notions and/or representations around certainmodern models of family and infancy. Parents and Sons magazine, a Brazilian familypublication, was launched by Bloch Editors S.A. in September 1968 and circulatedfor over forty years in print. Its birth took place at a time of great economic, socialand political transformations that substantially modified journalistic practices andproductive models of the media in Brazil. The revolution provoked by thecontraceptive pill, the intensification of censorship during the military dictatorship, the explosion of consumption and the technological increase were factors thatimpacted the publishing market, pointing both to a greater distribution and reach ofmedia messages and to the beginning of the process of segmentation in the Brazilianpress. In this sense, having as a theoretical basis the culturalist approach to studieson consumption, this research promotes a reflection on how Parents and Sonsmagazine was constituted as an important publication that, since its early years, helped to sustain the link between consumer culture and modern notions of familyand childhood.
