Falando consigo mesmo, mas não falando sozinho: procedimentos, processos comunicacionais e meios digitais / Talking to yourself, but not talking by yourself: procedures, communicational processes and digital media

Priscilla Thais Marqueto 22 November 2013 (has links)
The evaluation of previous research carried out by Nomads.usp - Center of Interactive Living Studies - which used several classical methodological instruments of qualitative research in order to understand urban and social contexts, found limits of these tools when they were employed to encompass nuances related to ways of life, worldviews and viewpoints of surveyed individuals. The aim of this reseach is to verify the limits and the possibilities of using three activities conceived for usage in cultural events with audience\'s presence - Street Radio, Digital Graffiti and Comment\'s Projection -, in a matter of utilising it as well as procedures for gathering informations about its audiences by proposing communication processes and dialogs, with the aid of digital media. These three activities were established according to the interests of the Public Policy Project \"Hybrid Territories: digital media, communities and cultural activities\", which, on the other hand, made possible the accomplishment of these studied experiments.

Racial Disparity in Social Spatiality: Usage of National Parks and Opera Attendance

Johnson, Joseph Terry 12 June 2006 (has links)
This study investigates the existence of an ethnic separation in different settings of leisure activities. I examine the relationship between race, gender, socioeconomic status, and education with respect to the usage of popular cultural activities and high cultural activities to demonstrate the racial disparity occurring in both. A literature review pertaining to the usage of outdoor recreation, as in camping and hiking evidences the influence of racism on the disparity in Non-white participation. In contrast to out-door leisure activities, literature evidences the influence of class instead of race for the disparity in indoor leisure activities. Using the 1993 General Social Survey (GSS), I am able to arrive at the conclusion that the type of leisure chosen by an ethnic group relates much less to the educational level, economic status or the place of residence as it does to the perception of the socially constructed settings.

The public diplomacy of the United States of America in the “war on terror”

Botes, Marina 19 November 2007 (has links)
As a theme of study, public diplomacy has been at the margins of International Relations and Diplomatic Studies, despite recent increased academic interest. However, studies largely remain descriptive and within the rationalist/realist approach, creating theoretical shortcomings. Furthermore, in practice, new manifestations referred to as public diplomacy, have entered the field. A recent manifestation, the case of US public diplomacy in the ‘war on terror’ is viewed as being propaganda. This campaign has thus challenged existing ideas on public diplomacy. This study postulates that due to the political and academic dominance of the US, this case will have far-reaching theoretical and practical implications. These theoretical shortcomings and new manifestations pose the main research question: What is public diplomacy? Two sub-questions inform this question: How does the US practice public diplomacy? How does US public diplomacy manifest in the ‘war on terror’? A three-step analysis addresses these questions: firstly, a theoretical analysis of the concept public diplomacy with propaganda serving as a counter-reference; secondly, an empirical analysis of US public diplomacy; and, thirdly, a case study of US public diplomacy in the ‘war on terror’. The case study follows two steps, applying a critical approach to reach beyond rationalist premises. The case study has been restricted to information activities of the principal public diplomacy agents and institutions. The theoretical analysis of public diplomacy indicates that, despite the fact that both practices are foreign policy instruments, and that they have common roots and common dimensions that create a public diplomacy-propaganda nexus, public diplomacy is clearly distinguished from propaganda by its diplomatic essence. The analysis has identified criteria distinguishing public diplomacy and propaganda respectively. The empirical analysis of US public diplomacy indicates that it conforms to the theoretical model. However, US public diplomacy is distinguished by its macro level foreign policy projection of exceptionalism and reliance on military power. The first step of the case study, applying criteria for public diplomacy, has revealed that US public diplomacy in the ‘war on terror’ only partially constitutes public diplomacy. The second step, applying criteria for propaganda, has revealed significant evidence of a propaganda campaign. This study therefore concludes that the information activities in the ‘war on terror’ constitute propaganda more accurately. In the light of the negative socio- and geo-political effects of the ‘war on terror’ in the Middle East, this study proposes that academic analysis clearly demarcates public diplomacy from propaganda by means of the principles of diplomacy, and also that policy makers refrain from propagandistic practices in public diplomacy. / Dissertation (M (Diplomatic Studies))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Political Sciences / M (Diplomatic Studies) / unrestricted

The adaption of cultural activities : A qualitative study on families with young children during a pandemic / Anpassningen av kulturella aktiviteter : En kvalitativ studie om familjer med småbarn under en pandemi

Eliasson, Ann-Sofie January 2021 (has links)
Libraries play an important role in society by offering cultural activities to families with younger children. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the libraries had to restrict their services. Due to the restrictions, families have lost many of the opportunities that the library offered. This thesis explores the effect that the restrictions have had on families. To get a contemporary insight into these effects the photovoice method was applied, followed by semi-structured interviews. Four families who frequent the library were used in the study. To present and analyze the needs of the families, the four spaces-model by Jochumsen, Rasmussen, and Skot-Hansen was used. An environmental anthropological perspective on the context of crisis by Vigh was used to analyze aspects of a prolonged pandemic. The results of this thesis show that the families miss libraries and their activities. The families expressed a wish for more outreach from the libraries. The interviews showed that socializing during the pandemic was the hardest challenge to overcome due to social distancing restrictions. At the same time, the families were able to come up with activities to do with the help of digital tools. This helped them to learn how to find and cre-ate new activities which then gave them a new experience. The thesis also presents that libraries are not able to follow the library act or appointed goals with the restrictions.

A Cultural Content Evaluation on Senior High School English Textbooks

Hsiang, Yu-chen Unknown Date (has links)
Abstract This study first analyzes the cultural load of New Far East and Lungteng sets of English textbooks (from volume 1 to volume 3) based on Moran’s (2001) cultural knowings framework—content, activities, and learning outcomes. In addition, each lesson in both sets is examined with the cultural objectives in English Curriculum Guidelines for Senior High Schools issued in 2004 to see if each lesson in both sets achieves all of the cultural objectives. The results of the study are summarized as follows. (1) The foreign cultures mentioned in both New Far East and Lungteng sets of textbooks focus on American and British cultures. This kind of culture-specific information does not follow the current trend of culture-general understanding or the transcultural approach in the world. (2) Most of the cultural content in both sets is just “facts-only” information, hardly touching the concepts of cultural practices, cultural perspectives, and self-awareness. (3) Less than 12% of the activities in both sets are related to cultural instruction. Additionally, the cultural activities center on gathering information and developing skills, rarely on discovering explanations and self-reflection. (4) According to the previous results, it seems that students solely using the two sets of English textbooks are not likely to have a successful cultural learning experience. (5) New Far East and Lungteng sets of English textbooks (from volume 1 to volume 3) achieve most of the cultural objectives in English Curriculum Guidelines for Senior High Schools. Finally, some suggestions are provided on the basis of the findings in this study.

Kristina, Fjellgren January 2016 (has links)
Cultural activities have in recent years started to be acknowledged in health promotion. The concept can include a various kind of activities such as dance, art, and theatre. Läget is a project which has junior high school- and high school students as a target group and the project use cultural activities to illustrate health issues of young people in Västmanlands County. The health issues that are contained within the project is based on data from the survey Liv och Hälsa Ung which is responded by junior high students in 7th and 9th grade and high school students in 2 grade. Liv och Hälsa Ung is carried out every third year in Västmanlands County. The aim of this study was to examine the experiences of participants of the project in terms of their participation and whether their participation gained knowledge about health. Furthermore the study aimed to inquire their thoughts about the project as a method for illuminating health issues. A qualitative approach was used and four participants who had been involved in the art exhibition in the project were interviewed.  The material from the interviews were analysed using a manifest content analysis. The result showed that high school students experienced that the projected had been satisfying working with and that their knowledge in health issues had increased. They also considered the art exhibition in Läget as a suitable method for mediating knowledge about health. The theoretical framework of the study were empowerment and health literary. The result of this study can be useful for gaining knowledge about how a project in art can be related to health among high school students.

Lebert Ghali, Caroline 12 1900 (has links)
This research treats about cultural diversity under the perspective of the “exception culturelle”. In this Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, cultural diversity gains a central position in regard to the cultural policies applied at the national, European and international levels. The objective of this research was to outline the meaning of cultural diversity in order to reveal the different tensions between the role of the nation-state and the power devolved to the open market of goods and cultural products on a supranational level. Thus, we hypothesize that the concept of cultural diversity takes different meanings in order to rally the different parties in the best interest of the Convention. Based on these evidences and Bourdieu’s hypothesis underlining the present homogenization of cultures, we ask ourselves : how can the Convention reconcile the open market of cultural goods and services and the protection of cultural diversity ? Who orchestrates cultural diversity in the Convention ? Is cultural diversity organized by the nation-state in charge of defending its own cultural expressions ? Or is cultural diversity organized by the open market that controls the market of cultural expressions based on the principle of supply and demand ? To answer those questions, we did a discourse analysis of the Convention in order to expose the underlying tensions in the concept of cultural diversity. We noticed that the concept of cultural diversity usually refers to the diversity of cultural expressions. Therefore, the concept of cultural diversity implies different perspectives. Nation-states do have the right to take measures and adopt cultural policies in order to protect their own cultural products and cultural expressions, but at the same time, the Convention promotes regional, bilateral and international cooperation between Parties. Cooperation is based on free trade, free movement and unlimited access of cultural activities, goods and services. Therefore, cultural diversity is directed at the same time by nation-states and relies upon the laws of the open market. The different mechanisms of the Convention try to ensure a certain balance between these dual perspectives of the Convention.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 8208772 bytes, checksum: 6418bc3f0e3532107d9d8d8ac64b836f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-07-04 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Tis work is consequence of a research based on the participant observation method, complemented by a posture of observant participation, which objective was to understand, through an analysis of cultural and polictic-social activities organized by7 two collective actor in the anarchic punk scene in João Pessoa city, the processes through which these, inspired in the punk culture and in the anarchist ideology, build in their movement an alternative autonomist and contra cultural of organization that is contradiction to the hierarchical and bureaucratic models of the current official politics. Also it contradicts the industrial culture and its mass culture. . Trying to understand the peculiar style of organization of activities and events propagandized by collective actors in the mentioned scene, it was made a theoretic debate among urban sociologists and anthropologists that study young cultures and social movements, including some that wrote about movements anarchist, punk and anarch-punk. In this research it was also analyzed militancy source materials, such as informative bulletins, reports of anarchpunk meeting of the northeast region of Brazil and websites of anarch-punk organizations. Based in the research efforts, we realized that the style of organization of the anarch-punk acting in the João Pessoa scene, creates a new style of actuation influenced however different of the styles anarchist and punk. That happens because it is mixed in their activities cultural and polictic-social elements and aspects that before is only found separated or absent in each of these two styles of actuation.
