Repatriation and the production of kinship and memory : anthropological perspectives on the repatriation of Haida ancestral remainsKrmpotich, Cara A. January 2008 (has links)
An ethnographic approach is used to produce a nuanced investigation of the efforts of the Haida First Nation in British Columbia, Canada, to repatriate the human remains of their ancestors from collections around the world. The result is a contextualisation of Haida repatriation within values and structures of kinship—a position that stands in contrast to the frequent use of political or legalistic frameworks to understand repatriation issues. Incorporating Haida sensibilities toward kinship relations is necessary as analyses based in colonial or post-colonial encounters fail to account for the full range of motivating factors, which include the Haida value of yahgudangang (‘to pay respect’ and ‘to be fit for respect’) and the agency of ancestors after death. Furthermore, it is argued that kinship is the predominant structure through which Haidas experience identity, history and memory. Repatriation is therefore approached as a collective space in which kinship and memories are created, as well as a collective space in which remembering occurs. In order to understand how the individual elements comprising the repatriation process reflect and foster the construction of kinship, the expectations and obligations that exist within matrilineages and between moieties are traced, as is their material manifestation in objects, as well as tangible and ephemeral property. The sharing of embodied experiences between generations as a consequence of Haidas’ participation in the process of repatriation is shown to augment collective memory and family histories. The ways in which repatriation is incorporated within individual and collective narratives are explored as a further means of understanding the dynamic between the production of kinship, memory and identity. Avenues for expanding the current findings on repatriation, the connections between memory and kinship, and Northwest Coast scholarship more generally are presented.

By the end of the 16th century, ways of uttering and conveying confessional identities in early modern Europe take hold of a specific genre : the collections of portraits and Lives of illustrious men. Based on both visual and literary rhetoric, these collections used by humanist authors to glorify the heroes of the past are also adopted by Protestants to celebrate the virtues and acts of the first great Reformers. Protestant collections commemorating the achievement of Luther, Zwingli, Calvin and other « instruments of God », invent a specific culture of remembering, which clearly intends to withdraw from the traditional Christian hagiography as well as the cult of images and saints. In fact, these printed temples of memory reflect and embody the very fabric of Protestant identity. Moreover, the form of the collection, that is to say the configuration and visual arrangement of distinct Protestant figures, enable to suggest a representation of Protestant Unity, that at the same time loses nothing of its confessional diversity.

Previous issue date: 2012-02-09 / Master's Thesis. Education Graduate Programme of Universidade Federal de São Carlos. São Carlos, 2012. This Master's thesis deals with the scientific investigation of a process of musical education among the elderly and children, and aims to draw a reflection on some of the cultural changes of recent decades, from acquaintanceship dialogued with a group of women in the aging process, in a educational institution located in a country town in the state of Sao Paulo. The social practices investigated work with the collective musical memory as an instrument for reflection, awareness and appreciation of identity, and seek to develop a method of interaction among generations that respects the cultural imaginary of cultural agents involved in the research. This intervention makes use of music as expressive language of values and habits of the Brazilian people, and highlights the Musical Education as a process of social construction potentially humanizing, which must occur through critical and creative educational praxis. It believes that the Brazilian educational processes not only occur in the formal institutions of education, but firstly on cultural and artistic relations of the popular imagination, the oral transmission of values, among different generations. In a process of looking and collectively share knowledge on the "Roda da Vida" (Circle of Life), this research aims to understand the educational processes initiated by intergenerational experiences and reflect about different perceptions and world views of this group of collaborators women through systematization and analysis the circle of conversation and textual and audiovisual records. The process of dialogic analysis of content and organization of results, looking for alternative solutions methodological dialog among research and intervention, and hope to contribute with other studies of intercultural relations at school.

Rastros da Ditadura Chilena, de 1973 a 1990 / And the clandestines, where are they? Trails of the Chilean Dictatorship, from 1973 to 1990Coradini, Rafaella de Aguiar 06 March 2017 (has links)
The text of the dissertation includes the effort to dialogue with the historiography about the History of the Chilean Dictatorship, also with historical theorists who deal with the paths of memory, relating it with reports made by survivors and characters of the dictatorships in the Southern Cone and in the case Of this dissertation, the Chilean Civil-Military Dictatorship (set./1973 to march/1990). And it ends with the audio-visual and biographical production already existing of the testimonies of several organizations, to explain how the clandestine happened in the country. The analysis was based on the questioning of the writing of the report, asking what and for whom it is addressed, as well as on the role of memory and its collaboration in clarifying the facts that occurred in a period of strong repression. Some survivors of human rights violations narrated their experiences from their understandings and emotions. Within this approach, the role of the State is also analyzed as a fundamental part in this process of reflection on dictatorial processes. For it is through the use and abuse of power that repression and violence are unleashed, knowing that such acts have become publicly known, when democracy is restored, and even before it, by the collaboration of those who have survived and prepared to recall the moments of clandestinity. This dissertation ends the activities carried out in the Post-Graduate Program in History of the Federal University of Santa Maria. This research focused on the area "History, Power and Culture". The research line "Culture, Migrations and Labor" collaborated in the discussion about the transformations of a society, with radical changes in its daily life, due to the Armed Forces' takeover of power, when a group of people came to live, from the coup, into the clandestinity. The objective was to interpret the works of memory in a sense of recognition and construction of the multiple Chilean identities, from the moment they arise, at the beginning of the 21st century, analyzing its documentary character for historiography. Thus, an analysis of the performance of human rights was made, starting in the 1990s, and how they became fundamental to achieve the objectives of these memories, a theme that circulates in the justification of the work, guaranteeing the prevalence of human rights in Societies that experienced great ruptures.

Previous issue date: 2009-02-26 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work intends to understand, in an essay form, the ways that the inhabitants of the contemporary cities relate themselves with the past, recognizing, in the simplicity of the experienced and tried daily life, the implications of a phenomenon nominated by some theorists as culture of memory . Takes place in the city of Joinville (Santa Catarina) s trajectory between the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twentieth first century, the essays presented took the 150th anniversary of this town as beginning in the search for interpretation of the recent processes that have been changing the urban ways of
live, as the growing instability of time and the fractures of the living space. In the first essay, the new sensibilities related to the past in the city of Joinville were put in discussion. Going against several documents, with emphasis for some news, reports, editorials and chronicles published in local journals, the intention was to perceive the relations of the inhabitants of this city with the time. In the second essay, the focus were the processes of (re)delineation of the ethnical boundaries that divide Joinville s daily life, trying to discovery the limits and possibilities of speeches that classified this town as a cosmopolitan city . Intent to the distinct trajectories of two ethnical groups that established, in recent years, their own characteristics in the city the Swiss and the Italian the intention was to present the negotiations, usually tense, that happened in the backstage of the 150th anniversary of Joinville. Oral speeches, produced from interviews with cultural leaders that represent both groups, were connected to the other references that based this work, especially, some practices to give memories a monumental aspect. At the end, some discords that were present in the process of research are presented, proposing some questions, just mentioned in the
essays, which deserve more profound studies.

Juxtaposing Sonare and Videre Midst Curricular Spaces: Negotiating Muslim, Female Identities in the Discursive Spaces of Schooling and Visual Media CulturesWatt, Diane P. 09 May 2011 (has links)
Muslims have the starring role in the mass media’s curriculum on otherness, which circulates in-between local and global contexts to powerfully constitute subjectivities. This study inquires into what it is like to be a female, Muslim student in Ontario, in this post 9/11 discursive context. Seven young Muslim women share stories of their high schooling experiences and their sense of identity in interviews and focus group sessions. They also respond to images of Muslim females in the print media, offering perspectives on the intersections of visual media discourses with their lived experience. This interdisciplinary project draws from cultural studies, postcolonial feminist theory, and post-reconceptualist curriculum theorizing. Working with auto/ethno/graphy, my own subjectivity is also brought into the study to trouble researcher-as-knower and acknowledge that personal histories are implicated in larger social, cultural, and historical processes. Using bricolage, I compose a hybrid text with multiple layers of meaning by juxtapositing theory, image, and narrative, leaving spaces for the reader’s own biography to become entangled with what is emerging in the text. Issues raised include veiling obsession, Islamophobia, absences in the school curriculum, and mass media as curriculum. Muslim females navigate a complex discursive terrain and their identity negotiations are varied. These include creating Muslim spaces in their schools, wearing hijab to assert their Muslim identity, and downplaying their religious identity at school. I argue for the need to engage students and teacher candidates in complicated conversations on difference via auto/ethno/graphy, pedagogies of tension, and epistemologies of doubt. Educators and researchers might also consider the possibilities of linking visual media literacy with social justice issues.
