Gon?alves, Salete 25 June 2010 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 SaleteG_DISSERT.pdf: 3347352 bytes, checksum: d824a89dc94014c474099bb6c8275706 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-06-25 / The work seeks to understand the process of reterritorialization triggered by tourism development in Tibau do Sul / RN, noting its economic, socio-cultural and political implications to the local society. Tourist activity was addressed as socio-cultural phenomenon, considering the case of (dis) (re) territorialization and power relations between staff producers of the tourism space. Given the complexity of this issue and the need for further studies that focus on the reterritorialization cases generated by tourism in the northeastern coast, given the action of the agents involved in the construction of the spaces generated by tourism, this work is then justified. For such a study an exploratory and qualitative study was conducted, through a survey of secondary and primary data, and interviews with leaders of public, private nonprofit community in the investigated county. In this sense, it was found that the process of (dis) (re) territorialization in the city investigated, permeates the contradictions resulting from the conflicts existing power while providing the location and implications for economic and sociocultural dimensions, its heart is found in the political, the relationship between entrepreneurship - established mainly by outsiders who own businesses in Pipa - and local government - composed entirely by insiders who work in the municipal headquarters, that until then, hold the political and the economic power. Thus, to understand the regionalization of tourism it is necessary to analyze its economic, socio-cultural and political dimensions, referring to the complexity of relationships between producing space agents. It is believed that the reterritorialization can be capable of producing territorialities contextualized to the culture, history, economy and local politics, understanding that the active participation of the natives will contribute to a less perverse, since this has been one of the faces experienced by local people / O trabalho busca compreender o processo de reterritorializa??o desencadeado pelo desenvolvimento do turismo em Tibau do Sul/RN, observando suas implica??es econ?micas, socioculturais e pol?ticas para a sociedade local.

The determinants of UK Equity Risk Premium

Chandorkar, Pankaj Avinash January 2016 (has links)
Equity Risk Premium (ERP) is the cornerstone in Financial Economics. It is a basic requirement in stock valuation, evaluation of portfolio performance and asset allocation. For the last decades, several studies have attempted to investigate the relationship between macroeconomic drivers of ERP. In this work, I empirically investigate the macroeconomic determinants of UK ERP. For this I parsimoniously cover a large body of literature stemming from ERP puzzle. I motivate the empirical investigation based on three mutually exclusive theoretical lenses. The thesis is organised in the journal paper format. In the first paper I review the literature on ERP over the past twenty-eight years. In particular, the aim of the paper is three fold. First, to review the methods and techniques, proposed by the literature to estimate ERP. Second, to review the literature that attempts to resolve the ERP puzzle, first coined by Mehra and Prescott (1985), by exploring five different types of modifications to the standard utility framework. And third, to review the literature that investigates and develops relationship between ERP and various macroeconomic and market factors in domestic and international context. I find that ERP puzzle is still a puzzle, within the universe of standard power utility framework and Consumption Capital Asset Pricing Model, a conclusion which is in line with Kocherlakota (1996) and Mehra (2003). In the second paper, I investigate the impact of structural monetary policy shocks on ex-post ERP. More specifically, the aim of this paper is to investigate the whether the response of UK ERP is different to the structural monetary policy shocks, before and after the implementation of Quantitative Easing in the UK. I find that monetary policy shocks negatively affect the ERP at aggregate level. However, at the sectoral level, the magnitude of the response is heterogeneous. Further, monetary policy shocks have a significant negative (positive) impact on the ERP before (after) the implementation of Quantitative Easing (QE). The empirical evidence provided in the paper sheds light on the equity market’s asymmetric response to the Bank of England’s monetary policy before and after the monetary stimulus. In the third paper I examine the impact of aggregate and disaggregate consumption shocks on the ex-post ERP of various FTSE indices and the 25 Fama-French style value-weighted portfolios, constructed on the basis of size and book-to-market characteristics. I extract consumption shocks using Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) and investigate its time-series and cross-sectional implications for ERP in the UK. These structural consumption shocks represent deviation of agent’s actual consumption path from its theoretically expected path. Aggregate consumption shocks seem to explain significant time variation in the ERP. At disaggregated level, when the actual consumption is less than expected, the ERP rises. Durable and Semi-durable consumption shocks have a greater impact on the ERP than non-durable consumption shocks. In the fourth and final paper I investigate the impact of short and long term market implied volatility on the UK ERP. I also examine the pricing implications of innovations to short and long term implied market volatility in the cross-section of stocks returns. I find that both the short and the long term implied volatility have significant negative impact on the aggregate ERP, while at sectoral level the impact is heterogeneous. I find both short and long term volatility is priced negatively indicating that (i) investors care both short and long term market implied volatility (ii) investors are ready to pay for insurance against these risks.

Silva, Fidelainy Sousa January 2017 (has links)
Nowadays society’s structure is built upon/on encounters between cultures, natural tragedies, world wars, diasporas, reconfiguration of borders and cultural hybridization. Thus, the aim of this research is to investigate the construction of the multiplicity of the Frontier Self as it is through the approach of the Chicano writer Gloria Anzaldúa and in the approach of the Amazonian writer Milton Hatoum in Borderlands/La frontera: The New Mestiza (1987) and Dois Irmãos (2000), respectively. Considering the identity issues, the analysis of the narratives transits/moves/focuses on through the fictional space to highlight the displacements and the migratory flows of the characters as articulators in order to understand the open wounds in border spaces. Therefore, during the research, it was possible to re-signify the frontier as a locus of cultural difference and fragmentation to counteract the idea that frontier places are fixed or function as divisors of cultural systems. To develop this work, I apply comparative and theoretical methods within the culturalist approach as well as the key concepts of Walter Mignolo on the coloniality of knowledge, and Stuart Hall and Homi Bhabha on heterogeneous identities. The denial of the essentialist position, based on the reading of the works, serves as an analytical strategy and understanding of the open wound as the space of the multiplicity in border regions.

The formation in breaking times with tradition

Ludwig, Cristiane 05 April 2013 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to understand Hannah Arendt thought as hermeneutical link of formation comprehension, in face to the situation of breaking with tradition. Taking, as background, the turnaround operations of the category framework from the tradition, that destabilize the strict underpinnings of the thought, producing a crisis in education, it is brought the idea of the activity of thinking by dis-sensorialization as a hermeneutical resource in pedagogical field. This act implies in taking into account the real experience, but does not submitted to it at all; otherwise, there will not activity of the thought. This last occurs by experience contact and, at the same time, disengagement. Nevertheless, in order to have dis-sensorialization, it is necessary the pedagogical invention of telling stories, for example. For that, it is sought to recover some reflections from her work A Vida do Espírito, focusing on the understanding of the proposal of conservation as education essence, in light of the metaphor of the thought without handrails. Under this condition, it is asked: how the Hannah Arendt perspective of the thought worried about past conservation can yet give stimulus to the contemporary formation? Beyond the cognitive sphere of the senses directed to know , the idea of the activity of thinking helps in the resizing of education meaning to a more comprehensive place. Such condition also replaces the dichotomies of pedagogical theories, divided, historically, between the attraction from the new education and the coming back of the tradition. In this sense, the teacher formation, beyond be conducted by the authority to assure the discipline or the students interests, receives orientation from both positions, bringing thus, new comprehensive possibilities. Turning present what is in absence to the senses and the experiences, the activity of thinking by dis-sensorialization makes arise, under language perspective, the stranger gaze and voice so precious to formative processes , at the storyteller image, that invites his hearers to reflect, making each one takes a decision and begin something new. Despite of the breaking with the tradition, the inspiration in the youngsters birth and in the commitment with the amor mundi lead the education to go away from the confines of dichotomies and modes, caused by not listen to his voice, due to its fall. The capacity of creating possibilities by the youngsters birth and the amor mundi (re)kindle the dialogue between Philosophy and Education at the horizon common to everybody.

Migault, Ariane 07 1900 (has links)
Based on various scientific studies, news media discourse address more and more regularly the danger posed by connection to all of those who spend too much time using digital devices. A normative load is therefore placed on connection and time. This research project aims to: a) explore what connection means to people whose daily lives involve being connected and questioning their connection; and b) to understand how their approach to connection may orient their experiences of time while at the same time being affected by the temporalities around which today’s societies are organized. The methodological approach that guides this exploratory research features semi-structured interviews conducted in Montreal with four “connected” people who questioned the place of connection in their daily lives. We met once a week for a month and the participants regularly filled out a logbook which they then presented to me at the beginning of each of our conversations. Based on the analysis of interview transcripts, I suggest that the participants share different approaches to dis-connection. The latter can be conceptualized in terms of infrastructure, artifacts and symbols. Also different temporalities modulate and are modulated by this dis-connection as people experience it as a means to fit in, and to aim for an ideal (time) balanced practice.

Mothes, Cornelia 06 August 2008 (has links)
This paper attempts to reconsider the value of Festinger’s „Theory of Cognitive Dissonance“ on mass media topics. Investigations in cognitive dissonance still represent an important field of research in social psychology. Yet, despite having once been one of the most important psychological theories on selective exposure, the concept is barely seen as relevant to current communication studies. Indeed, Festinger’s assertions have lost scientific importance in media studies. However, if one examines the present research topics in communication science, several objects of investigation can be identified that seem to call for psychological explanations in general and for Dissonance Theory predictions in particular. Thus, a reintegration seems to be worthwhile. The author exemplifies this intention by connecting political malaise with the concept of “Dis-identification”.

A well-placed table is a bridge to move : Designing spaces that open up for empathic and moving conversations that mediate the emergency and inform agency. / A well-placed table is a bridge to move : Designing spaces that open up for empathic and moving conversations that mediate the emergency and inform agency.

Timm, Mirja January 2023 (has links)
The design project examines collaboratively what transformative climate-communication can look like, and whether conversations can be a possible form of activism. Stemming from a concern that extreme forms of activism and their depiction in media have the potential to highly polarize civil society, the project explores the navigation and negotiation of spaces of communication and interaction in empathetic and connective ways. In the project I look at conversations as an additional or alternative way to disruptive protest forms of activism, within the non-violent liberal civil-disobedience movement and explore how to design for empathy and agency in the context of facilitating and curating spaces, tools and methods. The project recognizes the importance of conversations in the context of shaping opinions, changing perspectives and influencing behavior, and thus their relevance in the context of mitigating and communicating the climate emergency. During the project different conversation tools and methods have been designed, tested and developed in the framework of several gatherings.
