A atividade estética da dança do ventre

Reis, Alice Casanova dos January 2007 (has links)
The research has belly dance as its focus, more specifically the way as this aesthetical activity becomes concrete. Belly dance is understood as historically and socially constructed, discussing the problem of gender present on it. From the bakhtinian perspective, this research proposes belly dance as a process of an aesthetical modelling of the body. It happens when the belly dancer recreates herself to another one creating a dance, explaining the functions of each participant in the constructing trinity of this aesthetical activity: the belly dancer transformed in the author who creates, and is also the created character, and the spectator as a co-creator of the work. From the interview made with a professional belly dancer, belly dance is analysed as a mix of aesthetical relations which are: the relations of the belly dancer with the technique, with the body, with the music, with herself, with the participant, with the sacred, with history, with gender. The conclusion is that those relations compose a game of forces in which the dance becomes concrete as a unique aesthetical act, constructed as a form of a dilogical meeting of the belly dancer with the other one, mediated by the body.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This thesis consists in the ethnographic study of the process of transnationalization of the so-called belly dance. This matrix of human movement is considered to be native of countries with a Muslim majority. In this sense, it is understood as a tradition of Arab origin. However, the wide distribution of its practice implied deep and extended transformations in its structure. The belly dance is contemporarily practiced by women, in a global scale, as a hobby, a therapy, and a profession. In order to understand this phenomenon, it is necessary to analyze global cultural and political flows. In the specific case of the belly dance, we took into account the colonization of Egypt, first by the French and later by the British as two landmarks of its diffusion. The first chapter focuses on the relationship between the Europeans and the dance in Egyptian soil. The second chapter deals with the impact of this cultural exchange in the technical structure of the dance itself. The specific traits of this matrix of human movement in Brazilian soil, as well as the way in which the belly dance is enjoyed by its practitioners in Brazil, they all reflect its process of transnationalization in European and American soil. The dynamic aspects of this relationship is analysed in the third chapter, together with a discussion of the inherent aspects of the global cultural flow, such as authenticity and essentialization of culture. Finally, in the fourth chapter of the thesis, the imaginary surrounding the belly dance and the multicultural and revolutionary character of the dance as a unique matrix of human movement are both analysed from the way it is appropriated by its female practitioners.

This work presents belly dance as a valid subject for academic research, finding out that this artistic manifestation has been barely studied by brazilian schollars, as I could not find this subject in any academic works when I begun my investigation. This sort of invisibility and the silence surrounding this dance, in my opinion, derive from a prejudice about it and all misunderstandings related to it. As the available bibliography about belly dance was insufficient, the first step I took on this research was to develop a methodology to approach the subject, supported by interviews, fiel research and the available information collected on a few books and websites. Indeed, this methodology was based on texts of Gaston Bachelard, Antonin Artaud, Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Clifford Geertz, Luigi Pareyson, Homi Bhabha, and others. This methodology has been created to build an artistic knowledge about dance and belly dance, instead of thinking about it through the vision and meanings of other fields, as it usually happens when we depend on anthropology or sociology to understand dancing issues, for example. In the beginning of this work I present a theoretical context about belly dance today. After that, I point out that it is very difficult to define a linear history of this dance because of the multiplicity of facts and meanings related to this manifestation. Therefore, I conclude that it is better to validate belly dance as an artistic practice instead of trying to define its origins and its Eastern and Western roots/routes. The performance “Impressão Corporal” (Body Prints) is being composed as one of the effects of this investigation, based on the impressions collected during the field research conducted on Cairo and Alexandria – Egypt, on November, 2005. The aim of this performance is to give new meanings for belly dance as a performative practice. During this research I found out that belly dance is not performed exclusively by women. Despite of the sexual restrictions imposed on the male practice, there are belly dancing man performing until today. I also believe that belly dance is an option to break the fragmentation tendency of artistical practices. Indeed, it stimulates reflections about art, corporeality and our own boundaries and prejudices. Finally, I claim that belly dance is a hybrid, mixed art form which, in the concepts of Homi K. Babha, means that belly dance is neither eastern nor western, but is a “beyond”, and does not fit in any restricted definition.

Poetics of an Anthropophagic Womb is a research that investigated the corporality, the social imaginary and the inventiveness of the Tribal Fusion Dance, created in the 1990s in the United States of America, which main reference is the Belly Dance. The Anthropophagic Womb explored the limits of Tribal Fusion’s hybridism in the experiments with creating-interpreters on the Laboratory of Creative Processes that took place at the Universidade de Brasilia’s Dance Center. The Laboratory’s activities provided a big part of this research’s corpus. This is a theoretic-practical study to observe the dance being experience taking in consideration that the social imaginary integrates one’s corporality. The researcher has used the perspective of the symbolic thinking proposed by the Swiss psychiatric Carl Gustav Jung, whose theory has the symbol as one of the fundamental concepts, to elaborate a symbolic view upon Tribal Fusion practices. The social imaginary was investigated by the declarations, narratives and images shared by practitioners and scholars of the pelvic matrix dances — named so in this research due to its nature as a dancing modality that uses a group of pelvic and hips movement core that distinguishes it. This modality includes Belly Dance, Tribal Fusion and other subcategories. The reflections of this study were based on the methodological hints of the Sociology of the Imaginary and dialogued with Laurence Louppe, a contemporary dance theorist. It has highlighted the speaking position of the dance being to observe the aesthetic potency of Tribal Fusion. This approach aimed to discuss the stigmas that are historically related to the pelvic matrix dancing, in particular the stereotypes of women images and the use of dance as an instrument that reificates the body of the ones that dance.

A dança e o ventre : aparência corporal na contemporaneidade /

Kussunoki, Sandra Aparecida Queiroz. January 2010 (has links)
Na discussão final, são apresentadas várias possibilidades sobre a formação dessa crença, e indicativos de sua inverdade, a partir dos resultados apresentados, de elementos específicos desta dança e do ideal corporal contemporâneo, baseado na magreza / Abstract: Belly Dance has its origin in pre sumerians religious rituals, and the ancient people used it in different kinds of celebrations. As a fertility dance, it used to be practiced by women, in rites, at the time of planting and harvest and for preparing her bodies for pregnancy and childbirth, among others. This dance suffered various modifications through the times, and nowadays it is practiced all over the world. Until now, it continues being practiced as a preparation for childbirth in Bedouins tribes and recently in special classes for pregnant women in Occident. In Brazil, mainly in São Paulo state, there is an issue about people involved with belly dance (learners, professionals and audience) which states that belly dance may cause abdomen enlargement among its dancers. This work has as objective verify the existence of this belief and its truthfulness, exposing and discussing corporeity aspects in contemporaneity over gathering declarations and photographs of women divided in five groups: belly dance learners, sedentary people, other physical activities practitioners, other dance teachers, and belly dance teachers. Evidences were found about the existence of this belief, and the results demonstrated that it is a myth, constructed by the paradigm of perfect corporal appearance, and contemporaneousness esthetic morality. In the final discussion, several possibilities about the construction of this belief are presented, and so, indications of its untruthfulness, according to the results, specific elements of this dance and the contemporaneousness corporal ideal, based on thinness / Mestre

A contribuição da dança do ventre na educação corporal, saúde física e mental de mulheres que freqüentam um centro de atenção psicossocial / Contribution of belly dancing to body education physical and mentaL health physical and mental health of women whp attend a psychosocial care center

Peto, Ana Carla 15 July 2004 (has links)
Various non-traditional therapeutic modalities, such as Gymnastics, Yoga and Tai Chi Chuan, offer important contributions to care for patients with mental disorders at Psychosocial Care Centers (PCC). The characteristics of Belly Dancing possess the necessary conditions to offer the same contribution, particularly to the women who use these Centers. This study aimed to verify the contribution of this dance type to the body education, physical and mental health of the above mentioned women. Hence, we planned 11 Belly Dancing classes, offered on a weekly basis to 9 women who attended a PCC, with different diagnoses, who were the subjects of this study. Their testimonies obtained by means of questionnaires, which were applied before they had any contact with the classes and after the entire experience, as well as their testimonies recorded at the end of each class by two participating observers, who had been trained for this purpose, allowed us to verify the above mentioned contribution. Results showed that Belly Dancing contributed to better self-esteem and self-confidence among these women, it helped in their treatment at the PCC and made a considerable contribution to their body education, physical and mental health, thus improving their quality of life and, consequently, enabling them to live in their social and family environment.

Arising from rituals geared to female divinities, this dance symbolizes life, fertility and growth. We investigated how the dance, as a cultural production, acts as a nonverbal communication element in several dimensions related to the practitioners. This study may contribute to broaden the comprehension of the growing expansion of festivals, demand for lessons and media materials of the area, considering the lack of quantitative studies on the subject. The aim of this study was to investigate how dancing interferes and transforms quantitatively and qualitatively the image that wome have of themselves and of their relationships. The study sample consisted of 100 female participants, practicing belly dance for at least one year, from 5 different dance schools in two distinct cities the countryside of Sâo Paulo State, whose ages varied between 20 and 65 years. Data were collected through two intruments: the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and a questionnaire with open and closed questions, with quantitative scales. Analyzing closed questions of intensity and frequency, the items "femininity" and "joy of dancing" were the ones with the highest average and the lowest standard deviation among the answers. The lowest average, however, was the feeling of "eroticism of dancing", contradicting social beliefs. As for correlations made between self-steem and other variables, we obtained significant results in: how often dance alone, improve physical posture and changes in interpersonal relationships. When a woman dances, she learns how to deal with her body, which changes every day. With discipline and self-observation of her mistakes and difficulties, the woman becomes more confident by getting to know herself more; learns how to deal with her a body and her emotions. Na discussão final, são apresentadas várias possibilidades sobre a formação dessa crença, e indicativos de sua inverdade, a partir dos resultados apresentados, de elementos específicos desta dança e do ideal corporal contemporâneo, baseado na magreza / Belly Dance has its origin in pre sumerians religious rituals, and the ancient people used it in different kinds of celebrations. In the final discussion, several possibilities about the construction of this belief are presented, and so, indications of its untruthfulness, according to the results, specific elements of this dance and the contemporaneousness corporal ideal, based on thinness
