Breaking the loop : A study on how collaborative learning impacts accessibility in dance

Degerfeldt, Alva, Rychlik, Klaudia January 2023 (has links)
This bachelor thesis is a study of how collaborative learning impacts accessibility, with a particular attention given to the relationship between the learning process and accessibility. The aim is to gain insights into how collaborative learning as a pedagogical approach impacts accessibility in a group of mixed ability dancers. For that purpose, we propose a theoretical framework of accessibility, collaborative learning and pathways to knowledge. The study is conducted through a qualitative research method using abductive reasoning. It consisted of two workshops as well as in-practice reflections and discussions, following an eight-step thematic analysis method. In summary, five main themes were identified in this study: sense of belonging, openness, the act of sharing, space for interpretation and to dare. Each theme reflects components of breaking the loop, a process in which new insights may arise. Thus, all of the themes can be used as inspiration to create more accessible learning environment in which we pave the way for discovery and creativity. Thereof, while arguing for the significance of collaborative learning, this study intends to contribute to the conversation surrounding accessibility in the wider context of dance education.

Mörk, Sara January 2023 (has links)
This research is a qualitative interview study on consent in upper secondary school dance education through focus group interviews with teachers and students. The intention is to give more insight on how teachers and students understand consent in upper secondary school dance education and in general. The study shows that consent in upper secondary dance education in Sweden exists at the intersection between norms of communication, power and the context in which it is practiced. The most common communication of consent for dance in this study is through reading body language, and the most discussed situation is regarding touch and bodily contact. Touch is viewed by the teachers as a vital part of knowledge generation in dance. Both teachers and students find situations where students are engaging with touch and body contact as the most challenging. The study observes that consent is specific within its context, which requires dance teachers to establish and clarify norms and intentions in the dance studio. To do so takes time and repetition, if not successful norms and perceptions from other contexts may be stronger and make the communication of consent difficult. Further, the study suggests that teaching about consent needs to be combined with practical exercises for a more preventive knowledge. The material was analyzed with qualitative analysis and a norm critical and multimodal perspective.

Larsson, Lovisa January 2023 (has links)
“it is like jumping down into a water-barrel” – a study about dance pedagogues work with choreography in dance education This study examines how modern- and contemporary-dance pedagogues, in Sweden, work with choreography in their teaching. The purpose of this study is to through a phenomenographical perspective examine a selection of dance pedagogues perceptions of what the meaning of the phenomenon choreography has in their teaching. This is to hopefully contribute to an increased understanding of how choreography can be used in dance education. The research questions are How does three dance pedagogues perceive the usage of choreography in dance education? and Which pedagogical aspects can affect the teaching in dance? The study was researched through three semi-structured interviews which were processed and analyzed through Kvale´s interview-guide and Dahlgren’s & Johansson’s phenomenographical method for analyzing. The results show three main categories of description that were distinguished; The student´s affect in the dance education, The teacher´s affect in the dance education and Knowledge from choreographic processes. Each category was perceived differently, yet many connected to each other. Though this is a small-scaled study, the variation of perceptions shows many different ways to recognize and understand choreography’s and pedagogy’s relation to each other. Further research needs to be done to verify if these factors are important to the bigger population of dance-educators. /
2023-05-05

Språk: Svenska

Praktiskt presentation. Moving Through Stillness : En kvalitativ studie om hur en konstnärlig praktik kan användas i dansundervisning

Kateme, Luusi January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the bachelor thesis is to, from a didactic perspective, gain increased knowledge about how an artistic practice can be used in dance education. The study is conducted through a qualitative research method using the practice Dancing is... . For the research, four practice-based investigations were conducted in a dance studio. To analyze the result, coding was used as a method to identify various themes. The themes identified in the study were as follow: The body and its functions, Multilingualism, Passive-activity, Sensing the body, Seperation of the body and self, Attention and its direction, Drawings, Questions, Problem-formulations, Spatial direction, A composition-everything is happening simultaneously. These themes reflect MTS (Moving Through Stillness) as a practice and are components that can be used in dance education by creating a pedagogical structure. Moreover, since MTS has a somatic and artistic approach, this study provides a nuanced apporach to how these perspectives can be incorporated into dance education. As a result, this contributes to an increased understanding of how an artistic practice can be used in dance education.

: uppfattningar om jazzdansens utmärkande egenskaper / "…this genre is kind of out there experiencing quite a substantial identity crisis." : perceptions of the defining characteristics of jazz dance

Sahlin, Linnea January 2023 (has links)
This study aims to explore the defining characteristics of jazz dance as a genre with the ambition of reaching a deeper understanding of the art form as well as clarifying the foundations for my own jazz dance teaching. Using a qualitative research method, the study examines the perceptions of four dance educators, each with experience in dancing and teaching different forms of jazz. Drawing on a phenomenographic perspective, the study identifies variations in perceptions through semi-structured interviews and categorization. The findings present six descriptive categories of important components within jazz dance including Body and Music Interplay, Relevant Music Choices, Freedom, Play and Individuality, Contrasting Dynamics, Technical Finesse and Body Control, and Interaction and Expression. Furthermore, the study discusses the challenges of defining jazz dance but highlights the significance of embodied musicality and Africanist aesthetics as key elements of the art form, as well as emphasizing the concept of "swing" as central to jazz and the perception of “jazziness”. In conclusion the study shows a broad variety in perceptions which contribute to an increased awareness and understanding of jazz dance as well as providing tools for communication in jazz dance teaching. Ultimately the study encourages further research on the topic.

Duval, Hélène 02 1900 (has links)
Since 1981, primary and secondary school students have been sensitized to dance education by dance teachers who offer the discipline within the curriculum. The dance teachers in the school environment (DTSE) of Quebec benefit from a university formation which is at once disciplinary, pedagogical and practical and which develops their artistic as well as professional competencies. It is within this initial formation that the development of the professional identity of the teacher begins (Lessard et Tardif, 2003) and continues to develop throughout their entire career. Nevertheless, the identity construction of the DTSE has not been made the subject of a thorough study, since the teaching of dance in the school environment is a relatively new, non-traditional and unfamiliar profession. Thus, within the framework of a sociological constructivist approach, we study the tensions and identity strategies inherent in the biographical trajectories as well as in the professional representations of the DTSE with the aim of knowing better who they are. We seek to understand the meaning which they give, in their identity construction, to their formative path, to their work, to their relations in work, to knowledge, and to institutions by elaborating the relations maintained with others, and their perceptions of their artistic and educational roles, status and functions. A conceptual framework enabled us to make a sociological portrait of the spheres of identity negotiations inherent in the construction of their professional identity thanks to the analysis of the double biographical and relational transaction, a concept of Dubar (1991). The data collected from eighteen DTSE was generated from a socio-demographic questionnaire as well as from a questionnaire and interviews on their professional representations, their backgrounds and on the turning points of their biographical trajectories. The inductive analysis of the data, using the grounded theory approach, was verified by fifteen participants, and reveals six internal and external spheres of identity negotiation common to the identity construction of the DTSE: To become, To achieve, To project oneself, To make one’s place, To encounter the other and To act. These spheres represent identification fields within which the identity construction process of the DTSE develops in relation to the various identities inherited, acquired, prescribed, real, and projected. However the intervals between the opposing logics, the complementary postures and the roles to be played in practice for oneself and for others could provoke intrasubjective and intersubjective identity tensions which we have identified. In order to reduce the intervals between the polar representations and to alleviate the zones of identity uncertainties, the DTSE employs certain temporal and spatial strategies. We have identified nine such strategies: Conversion, conciliation, differentiation, multiple implication, identity preservation, defence, promotion, alternation of roles, and continuing education. This study exposes DTSE manners of defining oneself for oneself and for others which give access to the identity referents of the various spheres by concrete examples resulting from the verbalisations of participants in the field. Our interpretation of the results conducts us to describe six provisional identity profiles. Our results offer possible consequences in initial and continuing formation.
