Escaping the Labyrinth of Deception: A Postcolonial Approach to Margaret Atwood's Novels

Kerskens, Christel 18 April 2007 (has links)
The thesis produces a postcolonial reading of Margaret Atwood's novels, based on the concept of deception. Articulated on six major elements of analysis (intertextual parody, deception, magic realism, trickster figures, hybridity, and quest pattern, the thesis shows how Margaret Atwood's novels can be read from a postcolonial point of view, within which the motif of deception plays a central role.

Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) gaze following in the informed forager paradigm : analysis with cross correlations

Hall, Katherine McGregor January 2012 (has links)
I tested two pairs of captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in the informed forager paradigm: a subordinate saw the location of hidden bait, and then searched with a naïve dominant. This paradigm has tested what subjects know about others' states of knowledge, but my focus was to determine how subjects used different movement types and different gaze types to modify their competitive tactics. In particular, I investigated whether chimpanzees follow opponents' gaze to gain information. Learning more about how primates use visual information to predict others' behaviour can shed light on the continuing debate over to what degree apes possess theory of mind capacities. Previous published studies in this paradigm included narratives of ignorant competitors exploiting informed subjects by following their movement and gaze, and informed subjects avoided this exploitation by walking away from hidden food. The subordinate's behaviour can be considered tactical deception, which is a good place to seek strong evidence of second-order intentionality. Analyses with descriptive statistics, however, fail to capture the complexity of these interactions, which range from single decision-making points to larger patterns of following and misleading. I introduced a novel method of statistical analysis, cross correlations, that enabled me to examine behavioural patterns quantitatively that previous authors have only been able to describe in narrative form. Though previous studies on chimpanzees' understanding of gaze found that they were unable to use (human-given) gaze cues to locate hidden food, the subjects I tested followed their conspecific opponent's gaze, and used information gained from the gaze interaction to modify their own movement towards the hidden bait. Dominants adjusted their physical following of the subordinates as the interaction progressed, which reflected their changed states of knowledge. Subordinates used their movement and gaze differentially to manipulate dominants' behaviour, by withholding information and by recruiting towards a less-preferred bait.

Sinalização de mudanças de procedimentos de auditoria e escolha contábil / Signaling of changes in audit procedures and accounting choice

Grabert, Bruno Meggiato 30 September 2014 (has links)
This study aims to evaluate whether the signaling of changes in the independent audit procedures affect the audited agent\'s accounting choices. Changes in the nature, timing and extent of audit procedures can cause different perceptions and consequent changes in behavior and in the choices of executives in the audited company. To capture the change in the executives\' choices, a quasi-experiment is undertaken with different alternative arrangements of cash-generating units which, when subject to impairment tests, produce antagonistic financial results and, hence, different benefits and risks. The 132 participants in the quasi-experiment were MBA students and auditors. Based on the deterrence, interpersonal deception and attribution theories, the evidence shows that the signaling of changes in the nature of the audit procedures influences the accounting choice that is considered as going against the firm\'s policies. The analysis of the results rests on knowledge from disciplines like psychology, which discuss the managers\' choices under the influence of certain incentives and in the theories indicated above.

Maktdemonstration Kaukasus / Power Demonstration Caucasus

Fällman, Magnus January 2010 (has links)
Syftet med uppsatsen är även att belysa exempel på kraftsamling och vilseledning, både ur doktrinen och ur kriget.</p> / <p>August 2008, Russia goes into Georgia with an overwhelming military force to which it is said, stop violations of international law in the breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Almost two years later a new military doctrine was released, the Russian Federation Military Doctrine 2010, is there a link between the surprising war in Georgia and the new Russian doctrine? The main purpose with this essay to investigate, through the view of two of the principles of war, Concentration and Deception if there is a link, or connection, between the war and the doctrine. Are there actions during the war and paragraphs in the doctrine suggesting such a connection? That is what the author aims to answer with essay. The purpose with this essay is also to the reader describe the war and shortly describe the Russian Federation Military Doctrine 2010. The purpose with this essay is also to present examples of Concentration and Deception from the doctrine and the war.</p>

Procedural justice, social norms and conflict : human behavior in resource allocation

Eriksson Giwa, Sebastian January 2009 (has links)
Research questions, results and Empirical Data This book studies the allocation of scarce resources among competing needs and wants. Chapter 1 – Luck, effort and Redistribution on procedural justice provides one possible explanation for the vast differences between US and Western European tax an redistribution levels. Chapter 2- Participation and Peers in Social Dilemmas on social norms investigates two potential reasons why solutions to social dilemmas in for instance insurance systems can persist without being destroyed by the negative forces of free-riding. Chapter 3 - Commitment and Impasses in Negotiation on conflict shifts focus to bilateral bargaining and the reasons for conflict and impasses. Whether they manifest as strikes, job resignations, or trade embargoes, failures of the negotiation process create tremendous loss of social welfare and are therefore important to further understand. Each chapter is based on observations of real human behavior in the lab. The empirical data consists of: 204 M.B.A. students and 96 M.Sc. students from Harvard university, the Stockholm School of Economics, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm university and Karolinska Institutet; 5 experiments over 21 experimental sessions generated 2,520 observations.

: The cases of Pearl Harbor and the Six Days War

Axelsson, Lucas January 2013 (has links)
The principle of surprise is one of the oldest principles that is to used in battle. Principle as the basis of the conflict and the methods you can use to succeed in battle. But what does surprise really mean, and how is it used? The essay will problematize the principle of surprise and connect the research on surprise to Pearl Harbor and the Six Day War that has been seen to be typical surprise attacks. Did the attacks look the same and do the indicators from the literature show that it was a surprise?Initially the principle surprise will describe the selected literature to illustrate the meaning. The literature will be analyzed and make a basis for the later part of the essay. Then I will analyze the literature and apply it on the two surprise attacks, if they were using the same indicators. Finally it discusses the results and the author suggests new research related to the topic. The purpose of this paper is to problematize the principle of surprise and the indicators that affect the principle of surprise. The essay will conduct a comparative method between Pearl Harbor and the Six Day War. This analysis is performed by a qualitative text analysis and essay analytical framework is the principle of surprise. The theoretical basis of this paper is the analysis based on the theory and literature surprise of Pearl Harbor and the Six-Day War.

Detekce lži na základě sledování verbálního a neverbálního chování / Lie Detection Through Verbal and Nonverbal Behavior

Mynaříková, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation thesis called 'Lie Detection Through Verbal and Nonverbal Behavior' deals with lying and lies from the viewpoint of its types, functions and considering the development of an individual and it describes the role of lying in our lives. Lying itself is not considered as a negative term, but as a type of communication, a social phenomenon, which is a part of our everyday existence. Attention is aimed to verbal behaviour, but especially to nonverbal aspects of lying persons. Then it examines the use of information on lying and lies in the system of forensic psychology during the deception detection tests. It describes historical approaches to lie detection and its current appearance as well as some other aspects, that may be considered lying even if they are not lying at all - false memories or suggestions. The empirical part compares two research designs, one of them trying to find possible personal determinants of successful lie detectors on a group of psychology students and connecting lie detection ability with the concept of emotional inteligence. The second research analyzes the ability to detect deception among Czech police officers as a specific population group, that uses lie detection methods as a means of investigation. Keywords: lying, deception detection, nonverbal...
