Crítica à sustentabilidade: o descompasso entre o discurso e as práticas das redes de moda brasileiras / Criticism to sustentability: the mismatch between the discourse and the practices of Brazilian fashions chainsGodoy, Leticia Janini 06 November 2018 (has links)
The present research criticizes the contradictions between discourse and practice within Brazilian fashion industry\'s productive chain in the light of the theory of sustainability. In particular, it is assessed whether the actions of two main local fashion retailers - Renner and Riachuelo - are pertinent to the politically correct messages they propagate in the media. Such undertaking is based on an analysis of content available electronically in their corporate pages, which have been confronted both with the ideas originally promoted by the United Nations and by common sense. Thus, it aims to reach an understanding of sustainability concept from the point of view of the examined companies, considering its increasing polysemy. In the background, it intends to check if the business praxis is truly consonant with the values and principles dictated by the general notion of sustainability. The results indicate that the competitive and predatory logic that permeates the business of the analyzed companies contravenes the principles of sustainability, depriving them of their legitimacy and credibility

Norwegian Euroscepticism : values, identity or egotism? : a multi-level mixed methods investigationSkinner, Marianne January 2011 (has links)
Norway is the only country which has turned down EU membership in two popular referenda. It occupies a unique place in the study of Euroscepticism due to its population's stable and persistent misgivings about European integration. The thesis seeks to find out what Norwegian Euroscepticism really is and how it can be explained. Adopting a theoretical framework drawn from the Norwegian and comparative literature on EU support and a sequential exploratory mixed methods research design, the thesis first examines how the Norwegian Eurosceptic discourse has played out in a major national newspaper and the party political arena in the last fifty years, through the three periods of heightened Euroscepticism (1961-62; 1970-72; 1989-1994) and one period of latent Euroscepticism (1995-2010). Subsequently, the results of the qualitative analysis are tested on the 1994 Referendum Study to ascertain whether the issues mobilized in the public debate do indeed resonate on the popular level. The thesis finds that there are essentially two broad types of Norwegian Euroscepticism, mainstream (centre/left) and right-wing Euroscepticism. It argues that concerns about postmaterialist Values, political Culture and Rural society (VCR) are at the heart of mainstream Norwegian Euroscepticism, that values (the desire to make Norway and the world a better place), political culture (selfdetermination) and rural attachment are much more potent explanations for the phenomenon than economic interest (wanting to make Norway a richer place) or national identity concerns. Right-wing Euroscepticism, however, has an altogether different structure. Although it shares the political culture element with its mainstream counterpart, it does not exhibit postmaterialist or rural society sentiments. Conversely, it is driven by economic utilitarianism and the view that the EU is not sufficiently neo-liberalist. The findings also suggest that perceived cultural threat might be relevant to right-wing Euroscepticism, but this is an issue which must be investigated further by future research.

An identification and critical analysis of barriers to raising the topic of weight in general practiceBlackburn, Maxine January 2016 (has links)
In light of the increasing prevalence of obesity in the UK, health professionals working within general practice are urged to initiate discussion about weight with overweight and obese patients. Despite such appeals, evidence suggests that only a minority of health professionals routinely talk to patients about weight loss. To understand more about the barriers to raising the topic of weight in general practice, three empirical studies guided by qualitative research design were carried out. The first two studies draw on psychological theory to identify barriers to raising the topic of weight. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 GPs and 17 primary care nurses. The third study conducted with 20 GPs is underpinned by discourse analysis and uses trigger film interviews to capture and critically analyse the discursive production of, and macro-discourses shaping, barriers. In study 1 and 2, three main themes summarise barriers identified from GP and primary care nurse perspectives: limited understanding about obesity care, concern about negative consequences and limited time to raise a sensitive topic. In study 3, four discursive frameworks were identified as underpinning constructions about the barriers to broaching discussion about obesity: medical-reductionist, medical-holistic, moral and ethical. Findings extend understanding about the ways in which obesity is constructed as both a medical and non-medical issue. The findings have implications for health professional education, policy and research including the need to expose and challenge dominant understandings of obesity as a behavioural problem, to address barriers operating at the socio-cultural as well as the individual-level, and to enhance understanding about the socially embedded and pernicious effects of obesity stigma in the consultation and beyond.

Political communication in the age of dissemination : media constructions of HezbollahKhayyat, Taroub January 2014 (has links)
This thesis addresses the concept and forms of dissemination in political communication and news media. It investigates the new age of dissemination of global communication manifested in a new relationship between political communication and media systems. The broad aim of this project is to investigate the ‘media reality’ of political communication in this new age of dissemination. Working within the sphere of political communication and interconnected media systems, the thesis examines how the information in news source texts and responses to them is recontextualised and disseminated worldwide, and fed back again through recursive communication. Specifically, the thesis also considers ways in which the aims of the political phenomenon of Hezbollah are disseminated and connected across various news media outlets. In particular, the process of recursive dissemination of communication is analysed in three news media outlets, namely Al-Jazeera, the BBC, and CNN. The project has three principal conceptual building blocks: dissemination, political communication, and discourse and intertexts. The theoretical framework has determined the methods used to undertake a qualitative analysis of the data. Discourse analysis is used to consider intertexts and sub-texts, legitimation processes, framing, representation, and schematisation in the data. These dimensions are highly useful tools in identifying shifts across the three media organisations. This thesis has three specific objectives. Its first aim is to reconceptualise communication, establish a communicative model characterised by recursivity (one in which political communication and media systems play back on each other in feedback and feed-forward loops, which add intensity), and show how recursivity has gained in importance in the context of mass mediatisation, bringing about a new age of dissemination. That is, the political messages of Hassan Nasrallah, which polarise representations, are recontextualised and disseminated across media contexts in complex processes involving recursive media interplays. These processes have a direct link with the historical context in the sense that political communication and media systems play back on each other in feedback and feed-forward loops. The second aim is to investigate the appropriate approaches for the study of that communication in terms of the relationship between intertextuality, discourse, ideology as belief systems, framings, and competing framings which create new realities; this connects well with the conceptual framework of recursivity and dissemination. The third aim is to achieve in the data analysis a more sophisticated understanding of Hezbollah as a highly significant political actor, by creating a multicontextual analysis of recursive framing. The thesis demonstrates the complexity of recursivity and dissemination of political communication. It sets out to improve our understanding both of Hezbollah and of the politics the Middle East. The core of this thesis lies in its concern in reconceptualising political communication and applying it to the analysis of Nasrallah’s speeches and their recontextualisation in the above three global media organisations.

Assim, concebemos esse período - que corresponde à instituição e parte da cons / Formerly known as the northern region of the state of Goiás, Tocantins was instituted as a state of the Brazilian Federation in 1989. This study focuses on the various aspects of identity-building in this new state during the first fourteen years of its existence. To that end, it analyses how the discourse of the press and literature represent not only the new state but also Tocantins subjects and individuals over that period, since such representations, disseminated through the afore-mentioned discourses, have the potential not only to build a sentiment of local identity, but also permeate this very sentiment. The time frame of our research arose from the fact that José Wilson Siqueira Campos, the author of the bill of law that created the state of Tocantins and a politician regarded as being the creator of the state, was its governor for three terms. Therefore that period -- spanning the creation as well as part of the consolidation of the state of Tocantins – is considered favourable to the study of the lo

The objective of this work is to analyze, from the point of view of the French Discourse Anal-ysis founded by the philosopher Michel Pêcheux, testimonies produced in pedagogical for-mation of education professions of a public public school located in the area of the city of Porto Alegre - RS, Occurred in Second half of 2015, which included 60 (sixty) participants among the management team, professors and employees of the institution. What meanings of (non) permanence are perceived in educators' statements? What leads teachers to want to stay in educational institu-tions, specifically within the classroom? How do teachers stay in school? What school of teach-ers do teachers use to remain in education? We perceive, from the interpretations of the state-ments of (as) teachers, their commitment to the memory that associates education at a distance, information, documentation lived with concrete objectives that justify remaining in the exercise of the profession . The permanence of the teacher can be understood from the bonds he / she creates with his / her classmates and their students, ties that are publicly committed, and epis-temological and social commitment. Maybe it's a company that knows the teacher and a teacher and guarantees its commitment to education, by Miguel Arroyo and Paulo Freire, can be the element that is strengthening the teacher and ensuring his commitment to education.

The thesis analyzes fashion journalism, discussing this communicative practice performance regarding its own discourse. It is concluded that this is a hybrid discourse, strongly consisted of journalism, advertising, and aesthetics discursiveness. This paper aims to understand how fashion journalism discourse is structured, as the result of a process, and how it controls the other ones that shape it into a unique discourse genre. In order to examine how this hybrid discourse works, three types of fashion news articles were selected: news reports of fashion shows, articles about trends, and fashion editorials. The empirical materials chosen are issues of Elle, Estilo, Manequim, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar magazines published in 2015, raising a corpus consisted of 4.406 pages of journalistic news articles. The method used was the French Discourse Analysis, being applied – especially- the paraphrase concept which allowed us, through verbal and non-verbal discursive markers found in the text, to identify the main strategies of journalistic, advertising, and aesthetic discourses. According to our research, journalism triggers strategies of discoveries, updates, veracity, didacticism, use of sources of expertise, authority, and normativeness to meet its goals. Advertising especially activates the strategies of magic, idealization, customization and figurative language. Aesthetics, on the other hand, impels scenography, color, scale, ensemble formation, style, rhythm, and typography strategies. It is concluded that, from the dynamics that cross certain strategy groups, fashion journalism is built as a hybrid discourse, and this hybridity is its own survival condition. Also, it is possible to highlight that the journalistic discourse, which works as the conductor of this particular communication agreement, is the one that will list, with more or less depth, the strategies of those other discourses, establishing different movements of preeminence to serve fashion journalism readers.
