A madeira é a principal variável de custo na produção de polpa celulósica. A polpa celulósica obtida a partir da madeira de folhosas é principalmente utilizada para produção de papéis de escrita e impressão assim como, a produção de papéis para fins sanitários; para estes usos normalmente a polpa celulósica deve ser branqueada. Mundialmente, várias espécies de madeira de folhosas são utilizadas para produção de polpa celulósica de fibra curta, estando entre as principais o híbrido Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla (Brasil), Betula pendula (Finlândia) Eucalyptus globulus (Portugal). Este projeto teve por objetivo: i-avaliar e comparar o desempenho de madeiras de principais espécies utilizadas mundialmente, para produção de polpa celulósica de fibra curta, considerando os aspectos relacionados à qualidade da madeira e polpa, o consumo de reagentes químicos na polpação e também os aspectos relacionados ao rendimento e a capacidade de produção de polpa celulósica; ii-fornecer informações estratégicas para o setor celulósico nacional com relação as possíveis ameaças e as oportunidades apresentadas pelos materiais não utilizados no Brasil, visando o conhecimento e posicionamento em competitividade destas madeiras no mercado mundial de celulose e papel; iii-fornecer subsídios para o programa genético e de melhoramento florestal; iv-posicionar a polpa celulósica de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla em relação as suas principais concorrentes. Para realização deste trabalho foram coletadas 5 árvores de todas as espécies, sendo considerado o diâmetro médio do povoamento, transportando a madeira em forma de discos e transformadas em cavacos de forma manual; com relação à madeira foram determinadas, densidade básica, dimensões de fibras, composição química e análise anatômica através da microscopia eletrônica de varredura; as condições de cozimento foram ajustadas visando à obtenção de polpa branqueável (número kappa de 17±0.5). Os resultados obtidos mostraram que as espécies de Eucalyptus globulus e E. grandis x E. urophylla 2 apresentaram melhor desempenho no processo de polpação; atingiram a mesma intensidade deslignificação (expressa como número kappa), sendo necessário menor nível de álcali ativo. As matériasprimas citadas apresentaram maior rendimento, maior viscosidade e menor teor de ácidos hexenurônicos. As diferentes matérias-primas estudadas neste trabalho apresentaram características bastante distintas que implicam em diferentes eficiências nos processos de polpação e branqueamento. / Wood is the main variable in the cost of pulp production, besides being a strong component in the final quality of the paper product. Pulps obtained from hardwoods are mainly used in the production of printing and writing papers as well as tissue papers; for these uses, the pulp must be bleached. Several species of hardwoods are used in the production of pulp worldwide. The main ones are the hybrid Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla (Brazil), E. globulus (Portugal), Betula pendula (Finland). The objectives of this research was: 1) to evaluate and compare the performance of woods from the main species used worldwide for hardwood cellulose pulp production, considering the aspects regarding the quality of the wood and pulp, chemicals consumption during pulping, and aspects related to the yield and capacity pulp production; 2) to supply strategic information for the Brazilian pulp and paper sector regarding possible threats and opportunities presented by materials which are not used in Brazil in order to know and compete with these woods in the world market of pulp and paper. In order to accomplish this work, chips were manually obtained from disks. Regarding the wood, the basic density, fibers dimensions, chemical composition and anatomic analysis were conducted. The cooking conditions were adjusted in order to obtain the bleachable pulp (kappa number 17±0.5). The results had shown that the species of Eucalyptus globulus from Portugal and hybrid of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla 2 had better performance in the kraft pulping process; they had reached the same delignification level, as number kappa, requiring lesser active alkali. The mentioned raw materials showed higher yield, greater viscosity and minor levels of acid hexenurônicos. The raw-materials considered in the research showed clearly distinct characteristics that lead to differences in the pulping and bleaching processes efficiencies and strategies.

Dynamics of root-associated fungal communities in relation to disturbance in boreal and subarctic forestsHuusko, K. (Karoliina) 06 February 2018 (has links)
Abstract
Disturbance may shift microbial communities from one state to another. However, species differ in their ecological characteristics and their abilities to withstand disturbance. No single species or individuals of a species exist alone, but they are parts of complex interaction networks including species above- and belowground. In boreal and subarctic forests, almost all plants and a high number of fungi form mycorrhizas at the plant roots. In mycorrhiza, the fungal partner harvests nutrients for the host plant and, in return, gains carbon from the plant. In general, these common associations benefit both partners, but as heterotrophs, fungi are dependent on carbon photosynthesized by plants, whereas plants can survive alone as autotrophs. In addition to mycorrhizal fungi, also other fungi, such as endophytes, saprotrophs and pathogens, live in and on plant roots.
This thesis concerns the impacts of disturbance on fungi living in plant roots and in soil near the roots. I hypothesized that i) root-associated fungal (RAF) and soil fungal communities and colonization types change after disturbance, that ii) the observed shifts relate to disturbance intensity and that iii) they co-occur with changes in soil conditions and vegetation. Changes in RAF were studied as changes in root fungal colonization, or in fungal community composition. The latter were detected with next-generation sequencing methods.
The responses of RAF to disturbance seemed to be context dependent and related to sources of fungal communities (e.g. soil, RAF networks), environmental conditions (e.g. soil pH and nutrients) and host performance. It seems that abundances of those RAF species, which are present in the roots first (priority effect), may be increased by disturbance. Research produced new information related to ecological roles of the genera Phialocephala and Meliniomyces. Altogether, the results indicate connections between both abiotic and biotic environments and RAF, and host species viability and RAF. / Tiivistelmä
Häiriöt voivat siirtää eliöyhteisön tilasta toiseen. Lajien ominaisuudet ja häiriönsietokyvyt eroavat toisistaan. Mikään laji tai yksilö ei elä yksin, vaan lajit ovat osa maan ylä- ja alapuolelle ulottuvia monimutkaisia vuorovaikutusverkostoja. Boreaalisissa ja subarktisissa metsissä lähes kaikki kasvit ja useat sienet muodostavat sienijuuren eli mykorritsan. Mykorritsassa sieniosakas hankkii isäntäkasville ravinteita ja saa vastavuoroisesti kasvilta hiiltä. Tavallisesti nämä vuorovaikutussuhteet hyödyttävät molempia sienijuuren osakkaita, mutta toisenvaraisina (heterotrofeina) sienet ovat riippuvaisia kasvien yhteyttämästä hiilestä, kun taas tuottajina (autotrofeina) kasvit voivat elää itsenäisesti. Mykorritsasienten lisäksi kasvien juurissa elää yleisesti myös muita sieniä kuten endofyyttejä, saprotrofeja ja patogeeneja.
Tämä väitöskirja käsittelee häiriön vaikutuksia sieniin, jotka elävät kasvien juurissa ja juuria ympäröivässä maassa. Hypoteesieni mukaan i) juurissa ja maassa elävien sienten yhteisöt ja kolonisaatiotyypit muuttuvat häiriön jälkeen, ii) muutokset liittyvät häiriön voimakkuuteen ja iii) muutokset tapahtuvat samanaikaisesti maan olosuhteiden ja kasvillisuuden muutoksien kanssa. Juurissa elävien sienten esiintymisen muutokset tutkittiin sienten kolonisaation tai yhteisörakenteen muutoksina. Sieniyhteisöt selvitettiin NGS-menetelmien avulla.
Juurissa elävien sienten vasteet häiriöön vaikuttavat olevan tilannesidonnaisia ja liittyvän sienilajien lähteisiin (esim. maa, juurisieniverkostot), ympäristömuuttujiin (esim. maan pH, ravinteet) ja isäntäkasvin menestymiseen. Häiriö voi vahvistaa juurissa ensimmäisenä läsnä olevien sienilajien menestymistä (prioriteettivaikutus). Uutta tietoa tuotettiin Phialocephala ja Meliniomyces –sienisukujen ekologiasta, jota tunnetaan huonosti. Kaiken kaikkiaan, tulokset osoittavat yhteydet sekä elottoman ja elollisen ympäristön ja juurten sieniyhteisön että isäntäkasvin elinkyvyn ja juurten sieniyhteisön välillä.

Abstract
The main objective of this thesis was to investigate tree - cover crop interactions and soil response in an intercropping system, in which leguminous and grass cover crops were used with birch (red-leaved Downy birch Betula pubescens L.). The investigation was conducted in two field experiments in a nursery and in a greenhouse experiment. In the latter the effect of the water supply in interspesific competition was also investigated. The cover crops in the field experiments were perennial clovers Trifolium pratense L., T. repens L. and T. hybridum L. and annual clovers T. incarnatum L., T. resupinatum L. and T. subterraneum L. and perennial Festuca rubra L. The height, stem diameter, leaf area and nutrient status of the birch were determined, as well as soil nutrient status and microbial characteristics. The cover crops in the greenhouse experiment were T. repens, T. subterraeum and F. rubra. The biomass, height, leaf area, leaf area index, specific leaf area and N concentration of the birch, the biomass and N concentration of the cover crops were measured, and soil N and microbial characteristics, as well. Bare ground was the control in all the experiments.
The perennial clovers and Festuca strongly decreased the birch growth and nutrient status, but the annual clovers sown in midsummer in the field experiments provided about as good growth as bare ground. In the greenhouse experiment all cover crops were effective competitors with the birch. The soil NO3-N was, in general, the highest on bare ground and second highest in the annual clover plots. Though there were, in general, only minor differences in the soil nutrient concentrations between the treatments, there were significant differences in the tree growth and nutrient concentrations. The interspecific competition in this kind of intercropping system is mainly belowground. The growth reduction in the birch was mainly due to competition for nitrogen but water seems to play an important role in regulating the competitive interaction between the birch and cover crops. The competition for these resources seems to be most crucial at the beginning of the growing season. The microbial biomasses and soil respiration were greatest in the Festuca and perennial clover treatments, which may indicate that microorganisms together with these cover crops may seriously compete with birch for nutrients.
Intercropping system is complex and comprises both negative and positive influences. In order to minimize negative competition effects, the cover crop should be non-competitive or the ground should be kept free of vegetation at the beginning of the growing season. By improving soil microbial characteristics, the vegetative ground covers make this cropping system one possiblity towards sustainability in the long-term.

Abstract
Mycorrhizal fungi are important contributors to the functioning of boreal forests, since they act in the bilateral carbon and nutrient transport between above- and belowground parts of the ecosystem. In ectomycorrhizal (ECM) symbiosis of woody host plants, both fungal and plant partners depend on resources provided by the other. A single tree may simultaneously host several ECM fungal partners, which greatly enhance the host's nutrient uptake. At the same time nearly 20% of host primary production is allocated to mycorrhizal fungi.
Although fungi depend on host-derived carbon, it is poorly understood how reduced carbon availability, e.g., due to herbivory, affects the ECM fungal symbionts. In this thesis I studied the impact of simulated insect defoliation or mammal browsing on mycorrhizal fungi of boreal woody hosts. Quantitative and qualitative changes in biomass partitioning in different fungal compartments were detected. None of the experiments showed that defoliation or shoot clipping treatments reduced the intensity of ECM colonisation, while treatments often shifted fungal composition towards less biomass producing ECM morphotypes. Above- and belowground diversity in ECM symbionts tended to decrease due to shoot or foliar damage. In addition, in some cases defoliation also reduced fungal biomass in fine roots and decreased ECM sexual reproduction by reducing the number of sporocarps produced.
Defoliation induced a similar response pattern in the host and in ECM fungi with a stronger response to increasing severity of treatment (e.g. degree of removed foliage or repeated years of defoliation). This was also confirmed when relating the effects of host and ECM fungal symbionts to defoliation using present and previously published data. The present results suggest that belowground adaptation of boreal trees to the changing environment is mediated by changes in fungal community or biomass partitioning. The lack of response in the intensity of ECM colonisation further emphasises the importance of the symbiosis to boreal trees.

Trees adjust wood anatomical structure to environmental conditions, predisposing time series of quantitative wood anatomical parameters to be valuable source of palaeoenvironmental information. In this doctoral project we analysed the response of vessel parameters of i) floodplain Quercus robur to groundwater level fluctuation, hydroclimate variability and extreme events (droughts and floods), and of ii) Betula pendula to mechanical damage caused by various disturbances. Although climatic signal as well as pointer years stored in tree-ring width chronologies of Quercus robur largely differ between sites, quantitative vessel parameters contain spatially- homogenous positive signal of previous year summer temperature and current year winter/early spring temperature. The only between-site difference in wood anatomical chronologies is negative effect of moisture on vessel size in floodplain, which does not occur in not-flooded lowland sites. We suggest that while tree productivity benefits from high water availability, the wood anatomical structure of Quercus robur is constrained by high soil water saturation in floodplain zone. In addition, the response of tree-ring widths to moisture availability is not uniform inside single stand, but subgroups of trees with completely opposite response coexist...

- Ziele der Arbeit -
Das primäre Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit bestand in einer möglichst umfassenden Be-schreibung einzelner Entwicklungsstadien im Verjüngungszyklus von Betula pendula Roth. Dabei waren die lokalen Bestandes- und Standortsbedingungen im Untersuchungsgebiet in besonderer Weise zu berücksichtigen. Des Weiteren sollten Optionen zur waldbaulichen Integration der Sand-Birkenverjüngung in bestehende Behandlungskonzepte für in Auflösung befindliche Fichtenaltbestände aufgezeigt werden.
- Untersuchungsgebiet -
Der Tharandter Wald liegt im Freistaat Sachsen (50° 55’-50° 00’n. Br., 13° 25’-13° 35’ ö. L.) und umfasst eine Fläche von etwa 6.000 ha. Das von der Baumart Fichte dominierte Gebiet kolliner bis submontaner Höhenstufe (350 - 420 m ü. NN) wird der „Unteren Nordostab-dachung des Erzgebirges“ zugeordnet. Als Untersuchungsflächen wurden wechselfeuchte (wechselfrische) Standorte mittlerer Trophie gewählt, die von einschichtigen Fichtenbe-ständen in einem Alter von ≥ 80 Jahren bestockt waren. Einzeln bis truppweise eingemischte Samenbäume der Sand-Birke (B. pendula) bildeten eine Grundvoraussetzung für die Flächen-auswahl.
- Methodisches Vorgehen -
Das methodische Vorgehen konzentrierte sich auf die verjüngungsökologisch relevanten Entwicklungsstadien (fruktifizierender Samenbaum, Diaspore, Keimling, Sämling und eta-blierte Verjüngungspflanze) der Sand-Birke. Die Wachstumsparameter der vorhandenen Samenbäume wurden durch Untersuchungen zum Fruchtbehang unterlegt. Der mehrstufige Versuchsansatz zur Erfassung einzelner Verjüngungsstadien stützte sich auf Bestandesauf-nahmen, Gefäß- und Laborversuche. Erhebungen auf Bestandesebene erfassten die Diaspo-renausbreitung mithilfe von Samenfallen und dokumentierten die Keimlings- und Ver-jüngungsstadien von B. pendula auf entsprechend etablierten Aufnahmeplots (1 m x 1 m). Darüber hinaus umfassten die Aufnahmen Strahlungs- und Feuchtemessungen und die Charakterisierung der Bodenvegetation. Für die Einschätzung des mikrostandörtlichen Um-feldes wurden exemplarisch Bodendeckungsvarianten (Mineralboden, Nadelstreuauflage, Calamagrostis villosa CHAIX (GMEL.) und Deschampsia flexuosa L. (TRIN.)) ausgewählt, die als besonders repräsentativ für reine Fichtenbestände des Erzgebirges gelten. Für die räumliche Modellierung der Diasporen und Keimlinge auf Bestandesebene stand das Pro-gramm WALDSTAT (NÄTHER & WÄLDER 2003) zur Verfügung. Im Rahmen des Mitscherlich-Gefäßversuchs wurden gleichermaßen quantitative und qualitative Entwicklungen von Sand-Birkenkeimlingen und -sämlingen erhoben. Der Einfluss ausgewählter Bodendeckungs-varianten wurde in diesen Betrachtungen berücksichtigt. Neben zahlreichen Pflanzenpara-metern (Spross-, Blatt- und Wurzelentwicklung, Allokationen, Allometrien) war die kleinstandörtliche räumliche Verteilung dieser Verjüngungspflanzen von vorrangiger Be-deutung. Als Verteilungs- und Konkurrenzmaße auf Ebene des Mikrostandortes dienten Tessellationsmodelle, der Aggregationsindex nach CLARK & EVANS, der Gini-Koeffizient und das “Constant Yield Law“.
- Ergebnisse -
- Die Erfassung der Samenbaumparameter von B. pendula führte zu flächenspezifischen und signifikanten Unterschieden in der Dimension, Höhe und soziologischen Stellung. Für die Darstellung der Durchmesser-Höhenverteilungen erwiesen sich logarithmische und quadra-tische Funktionen gleichermaßen geeignet. Das Kronenprozent ereichte im Mittel Werte zwi-schen 37 % und 49 %. Die einzelnen Kronenparameter (Kronendurchmesser, Kronenlänge und Kronenmantelfläche) zeigten straffe lineare Zusammenhänge. Innerhalb der Kronen-strukturen (z. B. Blatt- und Zweigtrockenmasse) ließen sich zum Teil allometrische Be-ziehungen nachweisen. Im Rahmen der Vollbaumbeerntung war ein durchmesserabhängiger Fruchtbehang nachweisbar, der für den Einzelbaum eine Anzahl zwischen 2,3 und 4,2 Millionen Diasporen erreichte.
- Mit den Erhebungen zur zeitlichen Ausbreitungsdynamik der Diasporen waren durch mehrjährige Untersuchungszeiträume, auch für eine Pionierbaumart wie B. pendula, stärkere Samenjahre nachzuweisen. Die räumliche Modellierung der anemochoren Diasporenaus-breitung belegte erwartungsgemäß bessere Modellanpassungen für den anisotropen (richtungsgebundenen) Modellansatz. Dennoch zeichneten sich sowohl jahres- als auch flächenspezifisch deutliche Unterschiede in der Modellgüte ab. Als maximale Diasporen-dichte pro m² wurde ein Wert von 20.700 Diasporen ermittelt. Die mittleren Ausbreitungs-distanzen (MDD - “Mean Dispersal Distances“) lagen nach Modellschätzung für die ge-samten Beprobungszeiträume und unter Berücksichtigung aller Versuchsflächen zwischen 37 m und 90 m. Die durchschnittliche Diasporenproduktion eines Einzelbaumes lag nach Anga-ben des Modells in einem Bereich von 180.000 bis 7.400.000. Die Qualitätsansprache an den Diasporen ergab einen Anteil von etwa 5 % bis 8 % äußerlich Schadhaften. Der unmittelbare Windeinfluss auf Hauptausbreitungsrichtung und -entfernung konnte ebenfalls nachgewiesen werden.
- Untersuchungen zum Keimlingsstadium zeigten deutliche Abhängigkeiten zwischen den ausgewählten Bodendeckungsvarianten, der Keimlingsdichte und dem Keimlingswachstum. Sand-Birkenkeimlinge waren sowohl unter Bestandesbedingungen als auch unter den freif-lächenähnlichen Bedingungen des Mitscherlich-Gefäßversuchs auf der Variante mit Mine-ralboden besonders dicht aufgelaufen, blieben jedoch stark in ihrer weiteren Entwicklung zurück. Als besonders wüchsig erwiesen sich Keimlinge auf den Bodendeckungsvarianten mit Nadelstreuauflage und in D. flexuosa. Sand-Birkenkeimlinge der Bodendeckungsvarianten ohne Konkurrenz durch Bodenvegetation (Mb, Nd) besaßen eine längere Hauptwurzel und eine höhere Wurzelmasse (56 % - 60 % der Gesamtmasse). Die oberirdische Allokation (Blatt- und Sprossmasse) fiel hingegen für Sand-Birkenkeimlinge in den Bodendeckungs-varianten mit C. villosa und D. flexuosa höher aus. Verteilungs- und Konkurrenzerhebungen in den Gefäßversuchen erbrachten signifikante Zusammenhänge zwischen Keimlingsdichte, Standraum und Wachstum der Einzelpflanze.
- Das Sämlingsstadium und die älteren Verjüngungspflanzen wiesen einen deutlichen Rückgang in der Mortalität auf. Die Erhebungen im Bestand ergaben ein unterschiedliches Durchschnittsalter für Sand-Birken auf den einzelnen Bodendeckungsvarianten (C. villosa 7,6 Jahre, D. flexuosa 6,2 Jahre und Nadelstreu 4,7 Jahre). Die wachstumsrelevanten Umweltbe-dingungen wie Strahlungsverfügbarkeit, Feuchteregime und Entfernung zum nächsten Alt-baum unterschieden sich außerdem in Abhängigkeit von den als repräsentativ eingestuften Bodendeckungsvarianten unter Bestandesbedingungen. Das bestandesbezogene Wachstum der Sand-Birken in einem Alter von 2 bis 6 Jahren ließ sich durch eine exponentielle Funktion mit hoher Anpassungsgüte (p ≤ 0,000) abbilden. Innerhalb des Mitscherlich-Gefäßversuchs haben sich ebenfalls Unterschiede in der Individuendichte, den Mortalitäts- und Wachstums-raten in Abhängigkeit von den Bodendeckungsvarianten ausgebildet. Höchste Verjüngungs-dichten wurden nach einem 2,5jährigen Entwicklungszeitraum auf der Bodendeckungs-variante Nadelstreuauflage erreicht. Die Allokationen in der Trockenmasse näherten sich hingegen in den unterschiedlichen Varianten stärker an. Ein dichteabhängiges Wachstum konnte in der letzten Aufnahme nicht mehr nachgewiesen werden.
Abschließend bleibt festzuhalten, dass die ermittelten Untersuchungsergebnisse in Abhängig-keit vom jeweiligen Verjüngungsstadium die zeitliche und räumliche Präsenz, Konkurrenz- und Entwicklungsfähigkeit der Sand-Birke in Fichtenaltbeständen des Tharandter Waldes charakterisieren. Sie belegen eine kleinstandörtliche Heterogenität in den untersuchten Beständen, die sich nachhaltig auf die Etablierung der hier untersuchten Pionierbaumart auswirkt. Anhand der räumlichen Modellierung lässt sich die zu erwartende Verteilung von Diasporen und Keimlingen in Abhängigkeit von den Positionen der Samenbäume prognostizieren. Insgesamt ergibt sich aus den vorliegenden Ergebnissen ein vergleichsweise hohes Verjüngungspotenzial für B. pendula, das sich durch waldbauliche Maßnahmen effizient nutzen ließe. Ein detailliertes Wissen über die einzelnen Verjüngungsstadien bietet zudem die Möglichkeit einer gezielten waldbaulichen Steuerung der Baumart und zur Risikoabschätzung des Verjüngungserfolgs unter den gegebenen Rahmenbedingungen. Bei einer wachsenden waldbaulichen Unsicherheit im Umgang mit unterschiedlichsten Klima-prognosen, die sich in ihrer Wirkung regionalspezifisch erheblich unterscheiden können, sollte die Sand-Birke als Misch- und Vorwaldbaumart unbedingt berücksichtigt werden. Um dem viel zitierten Anspruch an die Nachhaltigkeit waldbaulichen Handelns gerecht zu werden, muss die Option zur Integration von B. pendula gewährleistet bleiben, auch für künftige Generationen und bei sich wandelnden Ansprüchen an den Wald. / - Objectives -
The main goal of this study was to describe comprehensively the particular stages of the regeneration cycle of Betula pendula Roth. Investigations were carried out in local stand and site conditions of a research area in South-East Germany (Tharandter Forest) are considered. In this context options for integrating Silver birch regeneration into silvicultural management concepts of old Spruce stands (Picea abies L.) with lacking vitality are pointed out.
- Research area -
The Tharandter Forest is located (50°00’N, 13°35’E.) in Saxony (South-East Germany) with an area of around 6.000 ha. It is dominated by Norway spruce stands, and ranges from colline to submontane altitudinal belt (350 to 420 m a.s.l.). These sites are part of the northern declivity of the Ore Mountains. Mono-layered Norway spruce stands with soils of medium trophy and well drained, but featured highly variable soil moisture levels during the growing season were selected for this study. The stand age was ≥ 80 years. Seed trees of Silver birch were mixed as single trees or small groups.
- Methodical aspects -
The methodical work was concentrated on relevant regeneration aspects like fructification of seed trees, seeds, seedlings, saplings and established regeneration of Silver birch. Growth parameters of seed trees and the amount of fructification were used to quantify allometric relationships. The multi-level research design was based on measurements under stand conditions, pot and laboratory experiments. Seed traps and plots (1m x 1m) were located in spruce stands with regard to different stages of Silver birch development. Therefore micro-environmental growth conditions like soil humidity and photosynthetic active radiation were measured, and plants of ground cover characterized. As examples of ground cover variants with highest presence in homogeneous spruce stands mineral soil, needle litter, Calamagrostis villosa CHAIX (GMEL.) und Deschampsia flexuosa L. (TRIN.) were chosen. Using the program WALDSTAT (NÄTHER & WÄLDER 2003) spatial distribution of dispersed seeds (diaspores) and seedlings could be modelled. Additionally pot experiments were done to compare quantitative and qualitative development of birch seedlings between stand and open site conditions. Regeneration density, number of leaves, shoot and root growth and allocations were measured as important growth parameters to evaluate single plant development under different environmental conditions. Finally, spatial distribution of seedlings in microsites and intraspecific competition were calculated by tessellation models, aggregation indices after CLARK & EVANS, Gini-coefficient and ‘constant yield law’.
- Main results -
- Measurements on seed trees of B. pendula indicate stand specific differences significantly in dimension, height and biosocial position of trees within the birch population (crown classes). For specific height-dbh curves logarithmic and quadratic equations were adapted. The relative crown length for seed trees was located between 37 % and 49 %. Allometric relationships between crown parameters (e.g. crown diameter, crown length and crown surface) were strongly correlated. In specific cases crown structures (e.g. dry mass of leaves and twigs) were also correlated, certainly with different grades. Direct seed counting of felled seed trees provided the relationships between dbh and number of seeds. Counted seeds for single Silver birch trees ranged between 2.300.000 - 4.200.000.
- As one result of seed trapping huge varieties in seed production of Silver birch were detectable between years with different seed potential. Spatial modeling of seed dispersal supported strong influences caused by wind (direction and speed). Hence, best fitted model estimations were found for anisotropic scenarios. The maximum in seed density was recorded with 20.700 seeds per m². As data for ‘Mean Dispersal Distances’ (MDD) the program WALDSTAT calculated between 37 m and 90 m. Furthermore the amount of seeds produced by a single tree was estimated with 180.000 - 7.400.000 depending on dbh. Physical quality evaluations for seeds have shown a mean proportion of damaged and not germinable seeds between 5 % and 8 %.
- Direct effects of ground cover variants have been identified for seedling density and growth. Seedling density was highest on mineral soil for both, stand conditions and pot experiment, but these birch seedlings developed slowly compared with individuals in the other ground cover variants. The best growth was realized by birch seedlings in needle litter and D. flexuosa. Regarding to root length and mass, birches in ground cover variants without grass competition (mineral soil and needle litter) have shown a significant better development of underground parts. Root dry mass of these birch seedlings reached proportions between 56 % and 60 % of whole plant dry mass. By contrast the aboveground dry mass (leaves and shoot) was higher for birches competing with grasses. Overall results of birch seedling distribution and competition were significant correlations between densities, space, and growth per single plant.
- For saplings and established birch regeneration a notable decrease in mortality rates were found. According to regeneration analyses under stand conditions age distributions in Silver birch regeneration have been controlled by ground cover variants and their environment conditions. The average age of Silver birch seedlings was high in areas with C. villosa (7.6 years) and low in needle litter (4.7 years). Furthermore growth influencing environmental conditions like light, humidity, and distance of old spruce trees have shown differences between variants in ground cover. The growth of regenerated Silver birches at the age of 2 to 6 years under those stand conditions can be described by an exponential function with high degree of adaptation (p ≤ 0,000). There were also differences in sapling densities, mortality and growth rates caused by ground cover variants in the pot experiments. After 2.5 years maximum regeneration densities in pots were registered on ground covers with needle litter. Allocations in regeneration dry mass were less influenced by ground cover variants than in previous stages. Density dependent growth rates could not be proved during last measurements.
Finally, the presented results provide the opportunity to characterize temporal and spatial presence of different regeneration stages of Silver birch, its potential of competition and further development in old Norway spruce stands of the Tharandter Forest. They document heterogeneous structures of micro-environmental conditions in these spruce stands, which have sustainable effects on regeneration establishment of this studied pioneer tree species. On the basis of spatial modeling it is possible to estimate spatial distribution of seeds and seedlings depending on seed tree positions. Overall the results involve a high potential of successful regeneration in Silver birch, which opens up promising vistas for silvicultural management. More detailed knowledge in particular regeneration stages induces possibilities for selective control in silviculture with Silver birch. Additionally, estimating the regeneration risks and the success under given surrounding conditions will be more precisely. Considering uncertainty in giving prognoses for climate change Silver birch should be integrated in silvicultural strategies because of its role as admixed tree species and pioneer crop combined with comparably high resilience against warming.

Short-term effects of controlled conservation burningRindzevičius, Vytautas January 2014 (has links)
In this study, the immediate and short term (three months) effects of conservation burning have been investigated in coniferous forests in southeastern Sweden. Five tree species were investigated Picea abies (Norway spruce), Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine), Populus tremula (aspen), Betula pendula (silver birch) and Betula pubescens (downy birch), as well as ground vegetation of mosses, dwarf shrubs and ground lichens. Burning increased the proportion of live deciduous tree shoots from 51 % to 81 % and the live tree shoot size distribution of four tree species was significantly changed by fire. Fire affected the tree species differently. Three months after burning deciduous tree species exhibited strong sprouting, while P. sylvestris had established many seedlings, significantly increasing its share of the tree stand. P. abies lacked any visible positive response to burning and its number of live shoots decreased by 83 %. Mineral soil was exposed on only the moss vegetation and covered just 4 % of the studied plot area. The initial vegetation response to fire was negative, but significant dwarf shrub recovery was detected three months after burning.

Previous issue date: 2011-04-29 / The knowledge of physiological processes during both dormancy and
vegetative growth is important for adaptation processes in temperate zone woody
angiosperms, especially in water management by those plants. The objectives of this
work were to evaluate the water content and carbohydrate metabolism during the
progress of dormancy in pears, to evaluate strategies of water use in two woody
species (apple and walnut), which were subjected to three different levels of water
deficit, and also to evaluate reliability of air injection technique to induce cavitation in
three woody angiosperms. The first experiment was conducted during autumn and
winter of 2008 in Brazil, and it was used plants of pears cultivars Packham's Triumph
and Housui. The second study was carried out during the summer season of 2009 in
France, with apple and walnut trees under water stress. The third experiment was
done in France in 2009, and three species of woody angiosperms with different
lengths of xylem were used Betula pendula, Prunus persica and Quercus robur.
From the results it was concluded that the water content in tissues might be a marker
of dormancy progression for cv. Packham's Triumph. However, the data were not
conclusive and clear in cv. Housui. Stomatal closure might be an important
parameter for preventing xilemian cavitation in walnut and apple trees subjected to
soil water deficit. Apple trees stomata grown under severe drought regime remained
partially open, indicating a greater tolerance of this species to drought in comparison
to walnut. Finally, the double-ended pressure sleeve technique is reliable for species
with diffuse-porous xylem by using short chambers and also branches longer than
the xylem vessels. / O conhecimento dos processos fisiológicos, tanto na fase de repouso quanto no
desenvolvimento vegetativo, é importante na adaptação das angiospermas lenhosas
de clima temperado, especialmente na questão da gestão da água pela planta. Os
objetivos deste trabalho foram avaliar o conteúdo da água e o metabolismo de
carboidratos durante o progresso da dormência em pereiras, avaliar estratégias do
uso da água em duas espécies lenhosas (macieira e nogueira), que foram
submetidas a três níveis de déficit hídrico, e por fim, avaliar a confiabilidade da
técnica de injeção de ar para indução à cavitação em três espécies de angiospermas
lenhosas. No primeiro experimento, conduzido durante o outono e inverno de 2008
no Brasil, utilizou-se plantas de pereira cultivares Housui e Packham´s Triumph. O
segundo experimento foi desenvolvido na França durante o verão de 2009, com
macieiras e nogueiras sob estresse hídrico. O terceiro experimento foi conduzido na
França em 2009 com três espécies de angiospermas lenhosas com diferentes
comprimentos dos vasos do xilema, Betula pendula, Prunus persica e Quercus
robur. A partir dos resultados concluiu-se que o conteúdo de água nos tecidos pode
ser um marcador do progresso da dormência para cv. Packham s Triumph. Porém os
dados não foram conclusivos para cv. Housui. O fechamento estomático pode ser
um importante parâmetro na prevenção à cavitação xilemática em nogueiras e
macieiras submetidas a déficit hídrico no solo. Em regime de secas severas, a
macieira mantém os estômatos parcialmente abertos, indicando maior tolerância
desta espécie à seca quando comparado à nogueira. E por fim, a técnica de injeção
de ar utilizando câmara de ar com duas saídas é fiável para espécies com xilema de
porosidade difusa, utilizando câmaras curtas e amostras de ramo que tenha
comprimento superior aos vasos do xilema.
