Концептуальные метафоры в современном англоязычном экологическом дискурсе (на материале статей сайта международной природоохранной организации «Greenpeace International») : магистерская диссертация / Conceptual metaphors in modern english-language ecological discourse (based on the articles of Greenpeace International website)

И., Grygorash, E. I. January 2021 (has links)
The thesis deals with conceptual metaphors used in publicistic texts of ecological discourse. The articles published on “Greenpeace International” were used in the study. The methods of cognitive-discourse analysis along with the framing method and interpretive semantic analysis were used to study the metaphors. The analysis revealed metaphorical models "environment - a living organism" (its frames are "human organism and actions" and "health/disease of a living creature") and "environment - war/fight" (frames "causes of a war," "participants of hostilities," and "military operations and armament"). The results confirm the perception of environmental problems as vital, directly affecting human life and health.

The dream of a different life : Documentary series on 'life on the farm' and their impact on the stories we live by

Lujinovic-Magnusson, Solina January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study is to, from a rhetorical perspective, contribute to the ecolinguistic discipline. This is done by demonstrating which and how underlying narratives are constructed in two Swedish documentary series with the theme "life on a farm". By setting these narratives against an ecosophy and using the concept rhetorical agency, this study thereafter highlights how these narratives can be understood as means of influence. The research questions guiding the study are: “Which underlying narratives are constructed and conveyed in selected Swedish documentary series with the theme "life on the farm"?”, “How are these underlying narratives constructed?”, and “How can these underlying narratives, in the long run, be seen as means of influence?”. The theoretical frame is based on Arran Stibbes take on Ecolingustics. The method used is Rhetorical criticism based on Kenneth Burke's pentadic analysis. The study shows, among other things, that both series can be seen as means of influence because of identification possibilities. Through the knowledge conveyed to the viewer, there are also opportunities to expand their rhetorical agency. From an ecolinguistic perspective "Mandelmanns gård" can be a beneficial story to build on.

Ekokritická analýza korporátního diskurzu o životním prostředí / Ecocritical discourse analysis of corporate environmental reports

Novák, Vladimír January 2019 (has links)
This thesis investigates corporate environmental discourse by focusing on the language of corporate environmental reports. It seeks to find out more about how corporations talk about environmental problems and how they position themselves in relation to these. The theoretical underpinning draws from ecolinguistics, specifically ecocritical discourse analysis, which critically evaluates discourses on the environment. Environmental reports published by the company Toyota are analysed through corpus linguistic techniques which help to identify the salient concepts and then further scrutinize their textual environment to uncover the dominant discourse patterns. The analysis reveals that the aim of the reports is portray Toyota as a company which actively protects the environment, which confirms the PR nature of the reports. As a result, negative information or data are downplayed and the company distances itself from these by obliterating its role (through devices such as nominalisation, passive voice or intransitive verbs). Ecological problems as such are addressed rarely and serve more as a background for the company to improve its public image. If they occur in the reports, the link between the problems and human activity is not explicitly stated. The ecological problems are also discussed as...

The methodology adopted was characterized by the qualitative approach of ethnographic base through the interaction with revelers and praying women during the annual feasting events of 2013, and 2014, in the rural area of the reported township, shifting focus to the rites that take place through prayers and life stories. The premise of the defence of this thesis is that the language of “Folia da Roça” preserves elements of the ibero-christian tradition, adapted to the local reality before the new conditions that take place amidst processes of urbanization and globalization. These influences were investigated by using the theoretic understructure of Ecolinguistics, a discipline that takes into consideration the study of language from the entanglement between the knowledge of Linguistics and Ecology, searching to describe interaction processes in which these categories manifest. Other guiding aspects of this research were: verify if the natural and social environments have any influence in the language of prayers; observe how ecclesiastic Latin is seized by those who speak rural Portuguese; investigate if values conveyed in the discourses of these protagonists are consistent with local wisdom or if they reflect patterns imported from the Iberian Peninsula during colonization; besides discussing and analyzing the memory of elders and their closer relatives in the prayers. By describing and analyzing the language of the feast, evidence is given of the adaptation and the resignification of official Catholic religious practice to the natural and social environments in which these protagonists are inserted. The religious ethic present there emerged as a result of the necessity of surviving in a historically hostile region, perpetuated by the interactions of its characters, transforming into an important and considerable manifestation of popular religiosity.

The aim of this study is to discuss the deletion of German language, culture and identity traces in Juiz de Fora city, Brazil. By means of ethnographic research, with semi-structured interviews, as well of documental research, and on Ecolinguistics theoretical basis (MUFWENE, 2001, 2008; COUTO, 2007, 2009), we investigate and reflect on the possible ecological aspects that influenced this linguistic and cultural deletion in the city during the adaptation process of the immigrants to the new land. Therefore, we believe that this deletion happened as a long and gradual process, influenced by several factors, including the hegemony of Portuguese language. Such a situation is quite different from what happened in other parts of Brazil, where there are visible marks of German varieties in their dialects (BORSTEL, 2011; PEREIRA, 2005), as well as many cultural heritages from the immigrants. In this sense, this work has the following main objectives: (i) to identify which varieties of German language arrived in Juiz de Fora; (ii) to trace the history of the linguistic contacts that took place in the city; (iii) to identify ecological factors that possibly influenced the deletion process of the varieties of the German language that arrived in Juiz de Fora. Thus, this study demonstrates how German immigrants German immigrants were taken to (re)construct their identities, leaving behind their origins and hence their linguistic and cultural heritages over time.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea : A Marine Discourse

Jazi, Rasha January 2023 (has links)
The marine environment’s evolving discourse on oil pollution in the High Seas since the 1958 Convention on the High Seas and the Convention on Fishing and Conservation of the Living Resources of the High Seas is of great significance. This research aims to investigate the changes and developments in this discourse, shedding light on the importance of addressing oil pollution and its impact on the marine environment. By examining the changes in discourse, the study aims to highlight the difficulty of the problem and the potential implications of its resolution. The approach involves analyzing the 1958 Conventions, GESAMP reports, and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The findings indicate that the 1982 treaty successfully addressed the semantic ambiguity of the terms ships and oil found in the 1958 Conventions. The inclusion of the term vessels in the treaty provided a more comprehensive definition, ensuring coverage of all types of ships. Furthermore, the discourse expanded beyond a singular focus on oil, encompassing a broader range of pollutants and environmental concerns. These results signify progress towards a more holistic approach to combat oil pollution in the high seas. The implications of these findings underscore the importance of ongoing efforts to protect and preserve the marine environment.

Ekolingvistický přístup k výuce cizích jazyků a hledání příběhů, kterými žijeme, v učebnicích francouzštiny jako cizího jazyka / An Ecolinguistic Approach to Foreign Language Teaching: The Stories We Live by in Textbooks of French as a Foreign Language

Schlindenbuchová, Magdalena January 2020 (has links)
This thesis presents the link between the environment and Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) based on ecolinguistics, which defines the inextricability of the environment and language. The specific aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the importance of an ecolinguistic approach to FLT with an ecocritical discourse analysis of textbooks use to teach French as a foreign language. Using the ecolinguistic tool The Stories We Live by, the analysis aims to assess the extent to which the textbooks stimulate environmental awareness and ecological communicative competence. The research concerns two textbooks, Totem and Saison, and investigates the representation of the stories and their polarity from the perspective of deep ecology. The results show the textbooks to exhibit a general tendency towards ambivalent content. Moreover, the presence of explicit ecological reference in the content was evaluated and revealed, by the analysis, to be under-represented in the textbooks' content. The analyses are presented as model analyses for an ecolinguistic evaluation of textbooks, which could be used by teachers seeking an ecologically conscious textbook. The thesis also seeks to encourage further research into the ecological aspect of FLT, notably in textbooks. KEYWORDS ecolinguistics, stories we live by,...

Language games and nature: a corpus-based analysis of ecological discourse

Frayne, Craig 07 July 2021 (has links)
This dissertation approaches environmental discourse from the perspective of intercultural communication research. As a discipline, intercultural communication has encompassed a range of analytical levels, from micro-analysis of everyday communicative interactions to the macro-level structural factors that were brought into light by the critical turn. In light of planetary environmental issues, some researchers have called for an “ecological turn” as a new research paradigm. However, the complexity of integrating communication, culture, and the natural world into a coherent research program poses significant conceptual and methodological challenges. This dissertation seeks to provide both a methodological and conceptual framework for discourse at the interface of human cultures and the natural world.

Conceptual metaphors in English and Shona: a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural study

Machakanja, Isaac 05 1900 (has links)
The study is a comparative analysis of conceptual metaphors in English and Shona. The objectives of this study were: to compare the metaphorical expressions of English and Shona in the same or similar domains in order to establish on the one hand whether there are similarities and/or differences cross-linguistically and cross-culturally in the metaphorical construal of reality between these two languages and on the other hand, to establish what the underlying motivation is for the similarities and the differences between these two unrelated languages. The thesis also explores the reasons for the similarities in terms of particular assumptions underlying conceptual metaphors, that is, embodiment and ecological motivations. / Linguistics / D.
