Assessment in English First Additional Language (EFAL) following the principles of outcomes-based education

Letsoalo, Kgwahle Bernard January 2009 (has links)
Thesis (M.A.(Language Education)) -- University of Limpopo, 2009 / The assessment of the current school reform effort emphasizes the neeed to improve the education of all learners. Assessing the academic achievement of every learner is an essential part of this reform, but one that presents a challenge for most schools, school districts and provinces. Traditional assessment practices have tended to exclude learners who are denied access to important educational opportunities that are based on assessment results. This problem is often more pronounced among learners who have to do Grade 9. This study focuses on assessment and discusses the advantages and challenges experienced by learners and educators. The aim of this study, therefore, is to assess educators’ success in the implementation of OBE assessment principles of English First Additional Language (EFAL) in Grade 9. This study was prompted by educator assessments, which have kept interesting the researcher because of traditional assessments which are at odds with OBE. Most importantly, assessment is no longer practised and determined in traditional ways. The educator must assess, in detail, the knowledge, skills and dispositions that learners must develop in order to achieve learning outcomes. The researcher recommends assessment to include English langauge learners, increase school accountability for all learners, have a shared vision of learner goals and standards, have an authentic picture of learning, and reflect assessment.

How teachers work to include newly arrived students in the English classroom

Berglund, Anna, Emgård, Jessica January 2017 (has links)
Over the recent years, global migration flows have brought increasing numbers of immigrating children to Swedish schools and this has, in turn, generated attention to questions regarding inclusive education. This case study aims to investigate how experienced teachers meet the needs of newly arrived students in the English classroom. The study is conducted at a primary school (grade F-6), located in a middle-sized town in southern Sweden, where 98% of the students have an immigrant background. This study is based on semi-structured interviews with three teachers and the principal of the school. We perceive that this is a school where inclusion seems to work quite well and by conducting this study we want to shed light on seemingly functional working methods. This study also investigates possibilities and challenges that teachers might face in the English classroom.

Applying Cooperative Development in Exploring College English Teaching in a Large Class Format in China

Yang, Fan 01 January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Large class size as a growing phenomenon in developing countries is closely related to two reasons: initiatives to achieve universal education and rapid population growth (Bendow, Mizrachi, Oliver, & Said-Moshiro, 2007; Shehu & Tafida, 2016). Given the fact that the large class phenomenon cannot be eliminated within a reasonable amount of time, it is important for teachers to develop effective strategies to teach English in large classes (Hayes, 1997). The purpose of this study was to understand in what ways post-observation discussions lead to increased self-awareness by a College English teacher of her pedagogy, especially related to large class teaching, and to provide insights which might be useful to teachers who teach large classes in China and around the world. The research site for this study was a four-year college in northern China. Data were collected from document analysis, observations, and discussions to answer the research questions. The post-observation discussions were structured by using the theoretical frameworks of the Cooperative Development model and a “collaborative conversation” approach. From a series of data analysis, four themes were generated from the data which included student participation, affective factors, classroom management, and instructional strategies. This study also provided implications of the findings and recommendations for further research.

Extenzivní čtení. Pozice a praxe využívání adaptované literatury na Pražských gymnáziích a postoj studentů ke konkrétnímu programu / Extensive reading. Position and Practices of Using Graded Readers in Prague Grammar Schools and Students' Attitudes to a Particular Programme

Fridrich, Pavel January 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis Extensive reading - Position and Practices of Using Graded Readers in Prague Grammar schools and Students' Attitudes to a Particular Programme presents the phenomenon of extensive reading. It looks into its history, theoretical grounding, the existing body of empirical research, graded readers and benefits for English language teaching and learning. The analytical part gives reasons for the contrast between the great potential of extensive reading for the student's improvement on the one hand, and the implementation which has been infrequent and often at odds with the principles on the other. To find the reasons, the theoretical part analysed the situation of the English language teaching in countries which had implemented extensive reading into the curriculum. In the research part it assesses the scale and the practices of using graded readers in all relevant grammar schools in Prague. In the second part of the survey of grammar schools, it focuses on a grammar school in Mělník, which has been systematically using GRs. It examines the students' attitudes towards the practices of reading GRs in order to assess the potential and the limits of the European Union financed project I read, you read, we read. Key words: Extensive reading, Methodology of English Teaching, Implicit...

Because of this, research in the area of English teaching, mainly to help teachers in their practices, has earned a lot of relevance. One of the teachers tasks is the teaching of composition writing. In this kind of practice, sometimes teachers have a hard time correcting the compositions, especially when the problem is not a mistake but excessive repetition of words. One of the classes of words that Brazilian students tend to overuse is the adjectives. This research aims at finding relexicalization possibilities for overused adjectives by Brazilian students of English as an alternative for composition correction. To realize this study two corpora will be analyzed, one belonging to a project called BrICLE and another called BNC (British National Corpus), the former will be the study corpus and the latter will be the reference corpus. For this reason, this study will make use of a methodology based on electronic corpus analyses, and will be theoretically supported by Corpus Linguistics (Sinclair 1988 e 1991; Hunston 2002; Sardinha 2004) and Learner Corpus Linguistics (Granger, 1998; Lorenz, 1999). By comparing the two corpora we came to the conclusion that Brazilian students really overuse certain adjectives. After analyzing the patterns found in both corpora we were able to suggest some relexicalizations possibilities for the overused adjectives.

I started this research aiming at discovering what were the expectations those students had and to what extent they would have been reached by the end of the research. I also analyzed how the English teaching-learning process was re-signified by the teacher so as to satisfy those expectations and also to see whether the teacher s re-significations were re-signified by the students. I initially deal with questions concerning the theoretical framework that underlies this research. Critical pedagogy (Freire, 1970, 2000; Giroux, 1988, 1997), reflective teaching (Schön, 1983), practices of teaching-learning English in the contemporary world (Canagarajah, 2002, 2005; Moita Lopes, 2002, 2003, 2006), and the notion of post- method (Kumaravadivelu 2001, 2003). Then, I describe how the research has taken shape as action-research, who the participants were, as well as the several instruments used in order for me to generate the data.

One of these contributions is the Personal System of Instruction (PSI) idealized by Fred S. Keller (1974). The aim of this research was the elaboration, application and analysis of an English teaching programm meant for children studying in public school as an extra-course activity foccused on the students mistakes during the evaluations throughout the course. The research was divided in three steps: 1st) the application of two tests throughout the period when teaching was conventional; 2nd) the transition between the conventional and the proposal of an individualized teaching; at this time a third test, an analysis of the mistakes happened in the previous evaluations and planning and application of remediative procedures introducting some principles of programmed teaching occured; 3rd) the application of the final three evaluations already under a new perspective from the first three previous, and the utilization of individualized exercises as a teaching initial condition.

Gasparini, Nathália Luísa Giraud January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation is a bibliographic research about language and content integrated approaches: Content-Based Instruction (CBI), Content and Based Integrated Learning (CLIL) and English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). The research tools used are Portal de Periodicos da CAPES and national journals rated from A1 to B2 according to Qualis-CAPES. The analysis of the papers about the application of these approaches in academic contexts published during the last five years focuses on two categories: integration between linguistic and non-linguistic content and interdisciplinary attitude (FAZENDA, 1993; SCHLATTER; GARCEZ, 2012). The research questions are: What is the definition of the approaches? How does integration between linguistic and non-linguistic content happen during the teaching practices? How do these practices occur in the first years of schooling (primary education)? How do teachers establish interdisciplinary attitudes? Frameworks for integrated planning are presented, providing the teachers with ways to plan cooperatively during primary education, with principles that rely on the answers found. In order to accomplish that, the theoretical background explores: 1) the child (and their development) as subject of the teaching and learning process; 2) a description of primary education in Brazil according to national documents and 3) the challenges and accomplishments of the studies about teaching children additional languages in the Applied Linguistics field The results consists of four frameworks for planning: the first and the second focus on the literacy cycle of primary education (first, second and third grades) through children’s stories and disciplinary content; the third and the fourth aim at the two last years of this level, through genre-based teaching (ROCHA, 2009) and course content. The frameworks are structured based on the features of the integrated approaches and the characteristics of primary education and teaching children additional languages: social interactionist conception of learning and languages, language as a tool of learning and as an object of teaching, and integration between linguistic and non-linguistic objects of teaching – through crossdisciplinary themes, higher-order cognitive processes, tasks, sequences and projects.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Maria Eugenia Batista.pdf: 3390587 bytes, checksum: dd7356371f224fa461452f787d0717c0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-06-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation, part of the DIRECT Project, is aimed to investigate the use of material processes, i.e., the processes of doing, in the pedagogic practice representation underlying the discourse of teachers of English and students, from state schools located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, regarding their English teaching and learning. This study has its linguistic analysis grounded on the principles of the Systemic-Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 2004 e HALLIDAY & MATHIESSEN, 2004), more specifically the focus on the ideational metafunction, and Critical Discourse Analysis (VAN LEEUWEN, 2008). The topics which comprise the representation of such pedagogic practice are discussed based on Bernstein‟s theory (1971, 1990, 2000), the socio-interacionist perspective (VYGOTSKY, 1978; NEWMAN & HOLZMAN, 2002; HASAN, 2005; HOLZMAN, 2009) and the Post-Method Pedagogy (KUMARAVADIVELU, 2008). Twenty five interviews were carried out (ten with teachers and fifteen with students), recorded and transcribed for analysis. The texts were, then, first analysed taking into account the Wordlists and Concordance Lists provided by the software WordSmith Tools (SCOTT, 2010). The material processes guided the analysis and results have shown that the use of material processes, such as do, work, give, pass, present in the representation underlying teachers‟ and students‟ discourse seem to suggest a pedagogic practice made of procedures, contents and means of assessment towards a pedagogy of transmission (BERNSTEIN, 1990). Teachers signal gaps in their initial education, the absence of resources in EF1, the use of a new material in EF2 and EM, and their difficulty in dealing with inclusive education, which has placed students with disabilities and special educational needs in regular classes. Students, on the other hand, flag how rules and indiscipline take place in class as well as complain about copying and translating, procedures of the pedagogic practice. Based on this representation, one can therefore infer that there is lack of opportunities for the students in their early years at school to play and by playing being able to develop their higher mental functions (VYGOTSKY, 1978), to learn the rules which underlie social interactions and to build knowledge by learning a foreign language. Observing the representation in the students‟ discourse, one can also observe that, throughout the school years, there seems to be lack of opportunities for students‟ to interact and come up with creative products in their learning processes in an effective way. Results, therefore, point out that there are socio-educational implications of such representations.
