Does Hope Buffer the Impacts of Stress and Exhaustion on Frontline Hotel Employees'Turnover Intentions?

Yavas, Ugur, Karatepe, Osman M., Babakus, Emin 01 January 2013 (has links)
This study investigates the effects of challenge and hindrance stressors and exhaustion on frontline hotel employees'turnover intentions and whether hope, as a personal resource, can moderate the deleterious effects of these antecedents on turnover intentions. Data were collected from a sample of 183 full-time frontline employees working in 5-star and 4-star hotels in Northern Cyprus. To ensure the temporal separation of measures, data pertaining to the independent and dependent variables were measured via two questionnaires administered with a time lag of two weeks. Results of the study reveal that hindrance stressors and exhaustion heighten frontline employees' turnover intentions and that hope is a potential antidote to the deleterious impacts of these antecedents on turnover intentions. Thus, managers should consider the candidates' hope levels during employee selection and hiring. Candidates high in hope should he given priority in hiring since such employees can better cope with stress and exhaustion. Management should also consider devising proactive strategies to keep employees high in hope in the organization since such employees can help create a positive work environment, may serve as role models to their colleagues and generate a demonstration effect among current employees with lower levels of hope.

Role of Tim3 in Mediating T Cell Exhaustion During Chronic Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection

Jacques, Miye K. 07 July 2017 (has links)
Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. One third of the population is estimated to be infected, however only 5-10% of those individuals can transmit the disease. While T cell immunity initially limits mycobacterium growth, it is unclear why T cell immunity fails to sterilize the infection and prevent subsequent recrudescence. One hypothesis is T cell exhaustion is mediating the failure of T cell immunity late during infection. Here we show the development of T cell exhaustion during chronic infection, and that the inhibitory receptor T cell-immunoglobulin and mucin domain containing 3 (TIM3) mediates the development of T cell exhaustion. TIM3 accumulates on the surface of T cells throughout the course of infection and there is a subsequent decrease in effector cytokine production, such as IL-2, TNFα, and IFNγ. Furthermore, antibody blockade of TIM3 restores T cell function and improves bacterial control. Our results show that TIM3 is mediating T cell exhaustion during chronic TB infection and leading to suboptimal bacterial control.

An Intrusion Detection System for Battery Exhaustion Attacks on Mobile Computers

Nash, Daniel Charles 15 June 2005 (has links)
Mobile personal computing devices continue to proliferate and individuals' reliance on them for day-to-day needs necessitate that these platforms be secure. Mobile computers are subject to a unique form of denial of service attack known as a battery exhaustion attack, in which an attacker attempts to rapidly drain the battery of the device. Battery exhaustion attacks greatly reduce the utility of the mobile devices by decreasing battery life. If steps are not taken to thwart these attacks, they have the potential to become as widespread as the attacks that are currently mounted against desktop systems. This thesis presents steps in the design of an intrusion detection system for detecting these attacks, a system that takes into account the performance, energy, and memory constraints of mobile computing devices. This intrusion detection system uses several parameters, such as CPU load and disk accesses, to estimate the power consumption of two test systems using multiple linear regression models, allowing us to find the energy used on a per process basis, and thus identifying processes that are potentially battery exhaustion attacks. / Master of Science

Design of a System to Monitor Youth Workers' Heat Stress and Positioning using Non-invasive Techniques

Kandel, Matthew Kreisman 10 January 2012 (has links)
Due to inadequate training and an undeveloped ability to recognize dangerous scenarios, youth workers are exposed to many dangers in the agriculture and lawn care industries. With the abundance of new technologies available on the market, a project was devised to prevent youth from heat exhaustion and equipment run overs by employing sensor based technologies. Using aural temperature measurement techniques involving a thermistor and thermopile, an accurate estimation of core body temperature can be made. The measurements performed by the devices are recorded and transmitted wirelessly over a ZigBee network using XBee radiofrequency modules. Utilizing the properties of radiofrequency transmission, the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) is used to approximate the distance between devices. With accuracy comparable to GPS methods and no necessity for line of sight to sky, RSSI supplies a more than adequate estimate for proximity distance. The temperature and RSSI values are then sent to a coordinating modem where the data is displayed for the supervisor. After testing and calibrating the device, it was found that these methods are effective for the monitoring of core body temperature and proximity of workers. The temperature sensor was able to measure temperatures with less than 0.25% error and the proximity sensor was able to estimate distance within 1.25 meters at close range. / Master of Science

Ett liv efter stressrelaterat utmattningssyndrom : en kvalitativ studie av hur stress hanteras senare i livet av människor med tidigare utmattningssyndrom / A life after stress-related exhaustion disorder : a qualitative study of how stress is handled later in life by people with former exhaustion disorder

Börjesson, Petra, Häger, Elsa January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was a deeper understanding of how people with former exhaustion disorder deal with stress later in life, what they consider helped and helps them, and their current stress-related challenges. Seven people who considered themselves recovered were interviewed 3-25 years after illness. The semi-structured interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed with inductive content analysis. The result was multifaceted, complex and provides a level of detail that favors understanding and practical application. Five main themes described the participants current stress management: Symptoms of stress, Lessons learned, Challenges, Handling and External perspectives. It emerged among other things, that exhaustion disorder changes the whole life forever. That many symptoms, handling and challenges remain even 3-25 years later. That the afterlife means a constant conscious balancing that when it succeeds means well-being but when it fails brings different degrees of increasing problems. A type of relapse where the body and psyche react faster than before, but the person, through self-development and life design, has acquired a better foundation than before for handling stress and uses different strategies and tools to halt and recover. Strategies and tools that might also help other people.
